TIPS & TRICKS
I got this email a few days ago from Mel Jolly, she is the writer’s assistant, so you can imagine how busy she is. I get her newsletter because I had asked her to be my assistant, and she turned me down. I was sad, but she offered to send me her handy dandy newsletters filled with tips and advice. I asked her if I could use this week’s for my blog and put it in my own words. She said, “Of course!” I really don’t have to put it in my own words because she said it just as I would have done it.
Today’s tip is going to sound a little weird, but I’m going to share it with you anyway.
Sometimes when I sit down to work, I have a

Busy chair
problem staying in my chair. (I already knew some good advice would be following)
It goes like this:
Oh! I need to get my water bottle from the kitchen.
Runs to the kitchen. Comes back to office. Sits down.
Oh Hey! The mail is here. I’m going to go get it.
Runs out the door. Gets the mail. Comes back to the office. Sits down.
Oh shoot. That pan I left in the sink probably needs to soak.
Runs to the kitchen…
Oh darn. I better walk the dog before it’s too late.
Runs to get the dog, leash and collar…
You get the idea.
Anyway, I usually listen to music on my computer while I work and one day I decided to listen through headphones.
I think the act of having to take out my earbuds to get up and then put them back in when I sat back down was enough to make me think twice about leaving my chair.
It’s almost like I literally tied myself to my chair.
Will this work for any of you? I have no idea. Maybe I’m the only one with a specific brand of laziness that keeps me from wanting to put forth the effort to take my earbuds out and put them back in. But, maybe it will work for you too! Why not give it a try?

WRITING IS EASY SAY SOME . . .
Writing is easy say some, just sit and stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead . . .
I like to give you something juicy right away. I make a point of opening my novels with a violent scene, with action, which then reveals a major change in the life of my character(s). Right away, the reader gets complexity, layers and a surprise shift of frame of reference.
By the time I finish writing, I realize that my outline had fallen out the window, the window slid shut, never mind outlines. Without my plan, who knows what my characters next move would be. Characters surprise me, they don’t follow the outline. They know what they want and how to get it, even if I don’t. The point is, write, relax, flee from friction, don’t stop. It’s your inner genius that’s writing, not you. Don’t worry about impressing agents or editors, there’s always time to rewrite. Trust me! Not once, not twice, but who’s counting.
I asked myself, why am I writing this book. Is it informative, evocative, life changing? Nope, history, I taught history, writing gives me a chance to write history. I love a fairy tale romance, like Romeo and Juliet. Is that reason enough to torture myself? Evidently, because here I am writing historic romance, my second book is evolving.
All writers are vain, selfish, and lazy, and at the very bottom of their motives there lies a mystery. Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.

FIREWORKS
Inspired by the fireworks, and my painting project of Coney Island, I’m writing a few memories. Those fireworks bring back more than my youth at the beach. They bring up the history of our freedom and the celebration of it all.
Enjoy this reblog. It was the mid-20th century, Tuesday night. The day and sunshine used up . . . riding, swimming, volleyball, handball. Time to cuddle on a beach blanket. Uh oh, wait a minute . . . did I say cuddle? No, it was time to watch the fireworks. Didn’t you say that’s what you were doing Tuesday night after a day at the beach? Who watched the fireworks? Did I? Did you? With my friends in many summers — I did watch the fireworks, a privilege of living close to Brooklyn’s Coney Island, a short train ride away from where I lived in Boro Park. Coney Island was the last stop! The sky was filled with color. The sounds filled the air with the fragrance of the fireworks powder wafting under our noses, magical. No one knew where to find anyone. Maybe on the sand, maybe on blankets, maybe in shadows under the boardwalk. That’s what Tuesday night was about. After a full day of fun, we all hung around to enjoy each other and the venue.
What started this thing called fireworks? The earliest records of fireworks dates back to 7th century China where they were first used to frighten away evil spirits with their loud sound and to pray for happiness and prosperity.
America’s earliest settlers brought their enthusiasm for fireworks to the United States. Fireworks and black ash were used to celebrate important events long before the American Revolutionary War. The very first celebration of Independence Day was in 1777, six years before Americans knew whether the new nation would survive the war; fireworks were a part of all festivities. In 1789, George Washington‘s inauguration was also accompanied by a fireworks display. This early fascination with their noise and color continues today.
In 2004, Disneyland in Anaheim, California, pioneered the commercial use of aerial fireworks launched with compressed air rather than gunpowder. The display shell explodes in the air using an electronic timer. The advantages of compressed air launch are a reduction in fumes, and much greater accuracy in height and timing.
The Walt Disney Company is the largest consumer of fireworks in the United States.

SPACIOUS SPACES
I was fortunate to be a blogging guest for Susan Hanniford Crowley, of Nights of Passion. Susan gave me permission to reblog my post.
Today I am writing about the real tale of Rork and Leila, and also of spaces built and used by artists. As an artist myself, I know spacious spaces are prized—like lofts and two-story high areas—where we can paint massive canvases.
“The Tenth Street Studio, 51 West 10th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in New York City, on the island of Manhattan, was designed by Richard Morris Hunt, and built for artists to have high-ceiling spacious spaces to create their art.
“The story goes–I discovered an amazing work of art where I curate art, Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk, Connecticut, a huge painting, Domes of Yosemite, that once hung in the rotunda of the mansion, commissioned by Mr. Lockwood, was painted by Albert Bierstadt in this Tenth Street Studio, a place of importance in my book, INDIGO SKY. This is actually where Albert (Rork) Bierstadt first met Rosalie (Leila) Osborn Ludlow when she and her husband, Fitz Hugh Ludlow, visited the studios for the first time. It was here they viewed Bierstadt’s work. Ludlow was impressed with Bierstadt’s work and wrote several articles in Harper’s, Atlantic monthly, and Frank Leslie’s Weekly, spreading the word of his talent and his art. Ludlow and Bierstadt developed a relationship that brought them together often and united them as they traveled to Yosemite. Plan was for Bierstadt to sketch while Ludlow journaled. At some point within a four-year period, Bierstadt became enamored with Rosalie. A romance ensued, followed by a divorce from Ludlow, then a marriage to Bierstadt. I was shocked, (Did those things happen back then?) by the entire goings on, and had to write a book, I had to tell the story. Although INDIGO SKY is fiction, it is a historic romantic adventure, inspired by Bierstadt’s Domes of Yosemite, and his life.
“Brief history about this place: The Tenth Street Studio Building, constructed in New York City in 1857, was the first modern facility designed solely to serve the needs of artists. It became the center of the New York art world for the remainder of the nineteenth century.
“The building helped to make Greenwich Village central to the arts in New York City, drawing artists from all over the country to work, exhibit, and sell their art. These studios were occupied by Winslow Homer and many artists of the Hudson River School, including Frederic Church, Lockwood de Forest and Albert Bierstadt.
“In 1920, in order to forestall a commercial takeover, the building was purchased by a group of artists. From that time forward, a number of New York City artists rented studio space in the building. Hats off to artists that are always on hand to save broken down architectural beauties.
“In 1942 the building’s basement became the meeting place for the Bombshell Artists Group, an alliance of 60 modernist painters and sculptors, many who had studios in the building. Its long history dates from 1857 to 1956, when it was razed to make way for an apartment building. In 2010, a penthouse apartment in the newly constructed apartment building at 45 West 10th Street was purchased by the actress, Julia Roberts.”

INDIGO SKY AMAZON REVIEW BY SUMMER LEA, 5-STAR:
VICTORIAN AMERICA COMES ALIVE THROUGH AUTHOR’S VIVID WRITING
INDIGO SKY is the poignant tale of a spirited young married woman, Leila, who faces a difficult decision: live constrained by the rules and expectations of her Victorian society, or follow her heart to happiness. Her husband (a drug addict) has betrayed her; her waspish mother seeks to dominate her; and the only person who truly makes her feel alive is forbidden territory: Rork Millburn, the handsome artist who heroically saves her life. I felt deeply for Leila’s desperate plight, and I cheered for her courageous determination to live as a free spirit in an age when female non-conformists were cruelly shunned by society — or brutally repressed by their disapproving relatives.
Like the hero in this story, the author, Gail Ingis, is an artist, making her a connoisseur of visual detail. Throughout INDIGO SKY, she literally paints with words. For instance, the Catskill Mountains come alive in all their breathtaking glory through Ingis’s gift of vivid verbal description. If you enjoy immersing yourself in historical detail, you will thoroughly enjoy Ingis’s writing.

TELL AGAIN TUESDAY TODAY!
Today’s post is a reblog . . .

C.D. Hersh
Tell Again Tuesday-by C.D. Hersh, Authors, published with Soul Mate Publishing, is a blog series, where we shamelessly share posts from others that we have enjoyed.
Does anyone else include this while writing?
Tackle Big Events While Writing, Posted on June 22, 2016 by Beth Carter.
It’s easy to write about boy meets girl or girl meets boy. Insert a villain, some scenery, conflict, the use of senses, a bit of backstory and foreshadowing, and you’re done, right? Wrong. It’s much more interesting when you throw in big (or even small, intimate) events. Whether they are a fact of life (like a birth or death), a crazy family reunion or a tragic occurrence, your writing will be enriched and become much more realistic by adding these details.
Here are examples of . . .

I thought that Beth’s suggestions were awesome. In my book, a historic romance, can you find betrayal and tragedy, and other life-changing situations? Do Leila and Rork find happiness? Is there a HEA (Happy Ever After)?

STAYIN’ ALIVE!
Indigo Sky by Gail Ingis

Bookcover
If you like romance, and you like rip-roaring adventure, Indigo Sky is for you! Shopping at Tiffany’s, getting caught up in the New York Draft Riot, the Civil War, and the wilds of the Great Plains. Here’s an excerpt from my book that will curl your toes.
Excerpt: Dawn finally broke, and Leila sat listlessly on the pallet. Would today be the day she was raped? Death was preferable.
Little Star peeked through the doorway and crooked her finger. “Come.”
Leila crawled out and blinked against the strong light. Rising stiffly, she stretched, enjoying the sun on her face. She smiled at children laughing and playing between the tipis.
A group of women waited for her. “You bathe.”
Bathe? Leila almost laughed with relief.
The women led her silently to a copse of trees. A stream gurgled over rocks. They stripped her clothes off, urged her into a deep pool and washed her with a chunk of herb scented soap.
She reveled in the cold water until an elder hustled her out, drying her with scraps of soft hide.
Stony faced, the elder worried her gums and mumbled something rubbing herb oils on Leila’s body. Deep crevices on her face sagged in a perpetual expression of discontent. The elder peered over Leila, her small black eyes glittered with malice. She rattled off in an angry tirade.
One of the young women giggled behind slim fingers.
Leila glanced from one to the other. “What did she say?”
Little Star arrived with a hide garment over her arm and handed it to the elder. “She say you white like chicken fat, and don’t know why Red Arrow want you.”
The truth dawned on Leila. This was the moment she’d dreaded. She backed away holding up her palms. “N—no!”
Snarling, the elder grabbed Leila and issued brief instructions. The other women hastily pulled the buckskin dress over her head. Beads and feathers decorated the soft garment. Had circumstances been different, the dress would have delighted Leila. The women took her arms and led her back to the lodge.
Red Arrow stood in the center of a clearing between the tipis, hands behind his back, black eyes impassive.
Leila’s heart pounded and she hung back. The women shoved her and she fell to her knees at the warrior’s feet. “I—I will not be your woman—your whore.” She took his callused hand. “Please, I have a husband.”
He shook her off. “You obey.”
“I can’t—won’t!”
Red Arrow looked at Hook Nose. The leader nodded at a group of warriors. They stepped forward and hauled Leila up, dragging her from the clearing.
She twisted around. “What are they going to do to me?” She cried.

REMEMBER RADIO?

First transistor portable radio
Recently, I wrote this blog for C.D. Hersh’s post at Soul Mate Publishing. The invitation to their blog guest spot came along at a perfect time, when my print book and audiobook are practically on my doorstep. Now, with the changing and the rapid growth of the book business, authors like myself, are looking for fresh ways to capture a new audience.

Headphones to listen to the books
Readers and listeners have been lured to audio books, but then so have narrators. It’s a, pardon the pun, novel opportunity for actors to perform. Audible.com, an audio company owned by Amazon, has a large pool of professional actors as narrators, and producers who are signing on more and more celebrities. Very often listeners buy based on who is performing. They follow a narrator, like readers follow an author. My actor, Jane Oppenheimer, has brought my book, Indigo Sky, to another level. I like her style and how she interacts with my characters. Here’s her website for your perusal and for contact: Janeoppenheimervoice.com.

Lone Ranger & Tonto
With the stirring notes of the William Tell Overture and a shout of “Hi-yo, Silver! Away!” The Lone Ranger debuts on Detroit’s WXYZ radio station, 1933.
Do you remember the old radio programs and the dramatizations, the stories, the mysteries, the comedies? We all sat around and listened. We used our imagination, we made our own visuals. Dagwood and Blondie (the Bumsteads). The Shadow Knows, Great Gildersleeve, Fibber McGee and Molly, the Lone Ranger and Tonto, and more. I even listened to tap dancing on the Children’s Hour on Sundays. Storytelling is older than Moses, you remember him, right? People were telling stories long before writing stories.
You can discuss finances with your narrator. You will need to discuss the time frame as well. The narrator provides a sample. It’s quite workable.
So how do you hire an actor to produce an audiobook? ACX.com has a great website with information and narrators. If you would like to work or interview Jane Oppenheimer, you can request her on Audible.
Here’s the direct link to the author page at acx.com.

Indigo Sky, historic romance, now an Amazon eBook, will also shortly be available in print book and audiobook. Watch for details.
