June McCrary Jacobs | Let’s Chat

Linda Brooks Davis

Welcome to Let’s Chat, everyone.

June McCrary JacobsJUNE McCRARY JACOBS joins us on Let’s Chat this week. Please extend June a hearty welcome.

June’s original sewing, quilting, and stitchery designs have been published in over one hundred and forty books, magazines, and on sewing industry blogs in the past decade plus. In 2019, she began publishing her sewing designs in sewing pattern e-books. Fourteen pattern books for home décor, children’s stuffed toys, gifts, and other items are available in the Kindle Store.

When not writing, reading, blogging, designing, or sewing, June enjoys gardening, cooking, and walking in local parks. Also, she frequents art and history museums and tours historic homes and gardens.

June is offering a digital copy of Robin’s Reward and “Handmade Hearts” to one drawing winner. Open to US and International residents.

Robin’s Reward by June McCrary Jacobs

June McCrary JacobsBonita Creek’s librarian Robin Bennett is heartbroken after being abandoned by her husband, Thomas. The mysterious and handsome Jeff Clarke arrives unexpectedly and touches Robin’s life with his wit and warmth. Then, without warning, Jeff’s harsh words and abrasive actions scare her off, and Robin’s hope of finding true love withers again.

Just when it seems Robin and Jeff might have a future, Susan Stinson decides Jeff should be hers, not Robin’s. Susan’s cruel taunting has plagued Robin since they met as young teens. Then her anger and jealousy escalate dangerously. Her vindictiveness threatens the foundation of Jeff and Robin’s young relationship.

Robin’s life journey meanders along the twists and turns of new challenges. Is a relationship which began with both parties harboring secrets destined to survive? Can they move past their troubles and the obstacles in their path to find love and happiness together? When their pasts rear their ugly heads, Jeff and Robin must use their faith to remain strong and true. But will it be enough for them to embrace a life of love, trials, and blessings . . . together?

Journey from Idea to Publication, Robin’s Reward

In January of 2013, my debut book, A Holiday Miracle in Apple Blossom, won Cedar Fort Publishing’s 2013 Holiday Tale Contest. It was scheduled to be published in October, 2013. After a flurry of edits and launching my first website, I began thinking about what I wanted to do next.

In 2011, I mentally transitioned from writing sewing columns and articles into fiction. I wrote a short story. The story featured the themes, characters, and settings of my first full-length contemporary Christian romance novel, Robin’s Reward.

I set the story in a fiction small town, Bonita Creek, in the coastal mountains of Mendocino County on the northern coast of California. This is one of my favorite places to visit, so I made Bonita Creek the heart of Robin’s story.

I finished the book after my Christmas novella was released. And I spent the next year-plus submitting the manuscript to literary agents and publishers. This was a time-consuming, frustrating, and fruitless journey for me.

June McCrary Jacobs: When I reached my self-imposed limit of rejections and/or ‘no responses’, I stopped submitting to agents and publishers.

June McCrary JacobsAfter some deep soul-searching, I explored other ways to get the story in print. The book offered valuable messages about faith, love, forgiveness, and perseverance to share with readers.

My first step in getting Robin’s Reward published was to educate myself about self-publishing. I had learned the path to publication required a good editor, a spot-on cover design, and strong marketing.

I hired another hybrid author I met through Cedar Fort to be my editor/formatter. She recommended a talented, experienced cover designer. I had learned to coordinate and execute a blog tour to gain much-needed exposure. Plus, a modest number of readers followed my website, blog, and Facebook, Goodreads, and Amazon Author pages.

Finally, the big day came in April, 2015!

I held a paperback copy of Robin’s Reward in my hands for the first time. This was an emotional experience after all of the twists and turns in the path to publication.

I have learned a lot about self-publishing in the six years since the release of Robin’s Reward. Some have been very hard lessons. My projects include an historical Christian romance, “Handmade Hearts.” A middle-grade historical adventure novel, RES-Q Tyler Stop. Also, twelve sewing pattern books featuring my original sewing, quilting, and stitchery designs for teens and adults. And two Kids Love to Stitch sewing instruction books (with projects) for middle-graders.

Each book allows me to learn and grow as an author, sewing and cover designer, and formatter. (I still use an editor.) As a lifelong learner and creator, writing stories and designing and publishing sewing projects for others is a dream come true.

Christine Dillon | Let’s Chat

Welcome, everyone!

[image error]Christine Dillon is an Australian who has spent most time in Asia. She attended school in Malaysia and the Philippines. And in 1999, she served as a missionary in Taiwan. In addition, she loves telling Bible stories and training others to do the same.

Christine’s writing journey started with non-fiction. But she’s now written four Australian, contemporary Christian novels. Besides reading, Christine Dillon loves the great outdoors – cycling, hiking, bird watching, and also researching her family history.A Word from Christine Dillon

I never wanted to be a writer but it seems that God had other plans. He graciously eased me into the idea by getting me involved with small projects which gradually increased in length until in about 2006/7 I wrote what would become my first published book, 1-2-1 Discipleship (Christian Focus, 2009).

About the same time, I was having a prayer day and suddenly the ideas for two novels downloaded into my mind. My first response was “No Lord,” but immediately saw that those two words cannot go together. So, I modified my response to, “I don’t think I have the ability to write fiction but if those ideas really came from you, then you’ll not only have to give me the ability but you’ll have to push me to write.”

In His timing He did.

Christine DillonIt wasn’t until 2013 (after I had written two more non-fiction books), that the push finally came. While staying in a friend’s home in the Philippines, I read Francine Rivers’ Sons of Encouragement novellas. Once again, crystal clear in my mind was the thought, “That’s how you start. You’re a Bible storyteller, you can practice by writing a Biblical novel.” That very day, I started the research and within a year or two had two Biblical practice runs written. These allowed me to practice writing without having to do much plotting.

In 2015, I started what I considered the real thing, a novel which from the first inspiration was called Grace in Strange Disguise. However, God in His wisdom didn’t let me know that it would take me four and a half years. Every time I wanted to give up, God would give me an encouragement to keep me moving forward.

One of the things with writing is that we are usually not a good judge of our own work. I had to allow people to read it and some comments were harsh. I edited and rewrote numerous times and I submitted it to competitions to receive feedback.

Eventually, I thought it was ready for a professional edit. I was wrong!

The editor wrote back that it wasn’t ready for her yet and gave me a list of things to improve and more writing craft books to read. It wasn’t until six months later (after the date I’d originally wanted to publish it) that she agreed it was up to a high enough standard to edit.

More rewrites and edits followed.

Prior to submitting to another competition, I asked a second editor, whose comments on an online group had impressed me, if she’d edit my three chapter submission. I was horrified to see so many more edits and after prayer, came to the reluctant conclusion that I needed a full second edit for this first book.

Towards the end of the process the editor wrote, “This is not one book but one and a half.” These words were like a knife in the chest. Again I prayed, and eventually listened to the editor’s wisdom and as a result a series was born. Having to cut off the best third of my first book and write a new ending was painful but that material became the conclusion of book 2, Grace in the Shadows and even two chapters of book 3, Grace in Deep Waters.

Christine Dillon: Key lessons I’ve learnedPray about everything, especially that you’ll be led to the right people to help you produce the best possible book for God’s glory.Writing is a slow, hard, process. The right editors make or break a book.Never be too independent. You’ll make far less mistakes if you belong to a community of writers and are willing to ask questions. Grace in Strange Disguise by Christine Dillon

Instead of a wedding, Esther is facing radical surgery and chemotherapy. Where is God when she needs him most?

Esther is a people pleaser. It’s never been a major problem because she’s just gone with the flow. Her father has always preached, “Follow Jesus and you’ll be blessed.” And up until age twenty-eight, Esther has never had any reason to doubt it.

Will she appease her father? Or will she listen to the words of a stranger who challenges everything she believes?

Grace in Strange Disguise by Christine Dillon is a soul-stirring contemporary Christian novel. Book 1 in the Grace series.

Prologue from Grace in Strange Disguise (Book 1) by Christine Dillon

“You have cancer.”

Acid surged in Esther’s throat. No, no, no, no, no. Impossible. William Macdonald’s daughter couldn’t have cancer. Esther wrapped her arms around her stomach. The nausea reminded her of that horrible day she’d taken her first rollercoaster ride as an eight-year-old. The car had chugged slowly, slowly, slowly to the crest of the ride, then plunged down, down, down. She’d been unable to escape, unable to do anything but hang on, knuckles white, and try not to throw up.

The doctor was still talking, but Esther’s brain was stuck on those three short words. Thirteen fateful letters. Meaningless on their own, but strung together. Cannonballs. Cannonballs, punching ragged holes in her life.

She was only twenty-eight. How could she have cancer? This wasn’t what she’d been promised. Or, what she’d been raised to expect. Hadn’t her father always preached that those who have faith would be protected from the problems that plague other people?

[image error]She’d taken the tests the doctor had ordered ten days ago, but only because that was expected of her. She hadn’t anticipated anything would be wrong. Not this wrong. And if there was something wrong, surely God would cure her. Wasn’t that his job?

You have cancer.

Three stark words.

No more fantasies of health. No more hiding. No more false hope.

Cancer.

There was no escape. No way out. Just like on the rollercoaster. The only option was to hang on for the ride, and hope she’d survive.

Teresa Tysinger | Let’s Chat

Welcome, everyone!

Teresa TysingerTeresa Tysinger is an author of Southern contemporary romance inspired by grace. She writes on the fringes of being a wife, mom, and full-time communications professional. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers, the Association for Women in Communications, and the Religion Communicators Council. She’s an introverted Enneagram 4 (if you know, you know) and loves coffee, traveling, and almost every genre of music. Born in Hawaii, raised in Florida, and educated in North Carolina, she now resides in Texas with her husband, daughter, and dog.

A Word from Teresa Tysinger

I’m so excited to be here to chat with you all again! Linda continues to be such a gracious host.

Today, I’m going to share something vulnerable with you. I like to label myself as a “functioning introvert,” meaning that while I am 100% an introvert, I have found ways to navigate a world that most often seems geared toward extroverts. Here’s the vulnerable part: Being an author requires more of me than I often feel I can comfortably give.

Writing is undoubtedly a great activity for introverts. I can sit alone peacefully at my computer and craft stories within the fictional worlds I create. No need to make small talk with my characters (they have each other). Even if I choose to write at a coffee house – think back to pre-pandemic times – it’s completely acceptable to stick in my earbuds, put my head down, and focus on my screen. When I need to recharge, reading a good book also serves as training for my own craft.

Teresa Tysinger: Yes, being a writer is a good choice for an introvert.

That is, until you decide to publish and need to build a community of readers. That means putting myself out there on a daily basis to interact, engage, and even woo folks to read my books. From a traditional publishing perspective, having this active “platform” is key. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I chose to pursue an indie publishing career. Less pressure to catch the eye of thousands and thousands of readers.

It’s taken me years to settle on how to be a public persona. If I’m being honest, I’m not quite there. While my day job as a communications and marketing director (ironic?) has given me the know-how and skill set for promoting my stories, being open and dynamic online is something I’m constantly working on. And stressing about.

Teresa Tysinger: So, why do I do it if it’s so often a little uncomfortable?

Teresa TysingerI do it because I am confident it’s what God has called me to do. To be specific, I feel like God called me to write stories filled with examples of His grace. If I say “Yes, Lord,” to the writing, then that means also saying yes to the parts of the calling that are difficult. And trusting in His promise that He will be with me every step of the way.

“If God is for us, who could be against us?” This verse from Romans chapter 8 is one I often lean on. If God is cheering me on in my endeavors, like an enthusiastic parent on the soccer field sideline, why shouldn’t I put my best foot forward? Run a little faster? And do it with a smile?

I’ve grown to enjoy the process of putting myself out there a little more. It certainly helps every time I’ve got a new story to share. The characters and truths I know are ready to meet the world give me extra energy to keep pressing onward. For instance, I cannot wait for readers to meet Quinn and Eli, the main characters in my upcoming novel Someone Found. Or Gwen and Ben in my novella, Gwen and the Three Dates, included in the Once Upon a Summer Collection. The world NEEDS to meet these characters and see how God works in their lives.

Teresa Tysinger: And so, I keep going.

I keep functioning the best I can as an introvert in an extroverted world. I keep praying, inviting God into the daily process. Because God has both called me and promised He’d be by my side the whole time. Amen!

W hat is one way you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone? How have you had to lean on God to see you through it? Has the experience taught you anything? Introverts and extroverts alike are encouraged to comment! Ha!

T hanks for allowing me these few moments to be vulnerable with you, sweet reader.

Life’s detours can be the most important steps we’re meant to make.

Injured and stranded, hiker Quinn McAlister is stuck recovering in Laurel Cove, North Carolina. The quiet mountain town and its polite residents are a far cry from the stifling home and painful disappointments back in Maine. When her handsome rescuer offers her a place to stay, she’s faced with coming to terms with her past and putting faith, for once, in a hopeful future.

Camp director Eli Moreland has devoted his adult life to serving others. The summer takes an unexpected turn when the beautiful hiker staying in one of the cabins sparks a deep desire for more. Giving her advice about faith comes easy. What’s hard is deciding if he’s ready to reopen his heart to love.

Being lost is worth the pain when being found is so sweet.

ABOUT THE LAUREL COVE ROMANCE SERIES by Teresa Tysinger

The Laurel Cove Romance Series takes readers to Laurel Cove, NC—a charming, quiet fictional town tucked into the cozy Blue Ridge Mountains. The people of Laurel Cove are friendly and welcoming, the pace is slow and peaceful, and the scenery is breathtaking. It’s the perfect place for inspiration to strike and love to take hold.

The series also includes Someplace Familiar (Book 1) and Suddenly Forever (Book 2). The novels in this series are completely stand-alone and can be read in any order. Readers will recognize a few supporting characters shared between the stories, but it is not necessary to have read the others before Someone Found (Book 3). The fourth and final novel in the series is set to release in early 2022.

Marguerite Gray | Let’s Chat

Welcome to Let’s Chat, everyone!

Marguerite GrayMarguerite Martin Gray joins our circle this week. Welcome, Marguerite!

Marguerite authored Hold Me Close, Surround Me, Bring Me Near, Draw Me to Your Side, and Wait for MeRevolutionary Faith Books One, Two, Three, Four, and Five. She enjoys studying history and writing fiction. An avid traveler and reader, she earned degrees in French, Spanish, and Journalism, and a MA in English. Presently, she teaches online High School Spanish and French. She resides in North Louisiana with her husband and three rescue pets. Her two adult children keep her young and in the know.

Join our conversation below, and you could win Marguerite’s giveaway: winner’s choice of one of her books in paperback form.

Meet Marguerite Martin Gray

My name is Marguerite Gray from the sunny state of Louisiana. Thank you for joining me on my journey to the publication of my most recent novel, Wait for Me. The journey has taken quite a few years, going back to my childhood. It all began with reading. Supplying me with enough books to read must have been a chore for my parents. Of course, wanting to keep the books from the library didn’t help my plight. Throughout my life, I have purchased as many books as possible, loving the feel of each one and their positions on my shelves. Without revealing my age, if I had kept every book, I would have needed a Beauty and the Beast library!

Combining reading with my love of research very easily segued into writing. Historical fiction captured my senses and passion with Lori Wick’s novels leading my foray into Christian fiction. My Revolutionary Faith Series had a natural birth. My parents made sure my education included travel and cultural history, carrying my sisters and me through castles, manor houses, churches, and cemeteries throughout Britain and the continent. At home my father stimulated my own ancestral history with tales from the past accompanied by heirlooms, paintings, and a detailed genealogical chart. What stories lurked within those items!

Inspired after researching in Charleston, South Carolina, I had to write the series of my heart.

Marguerite Gray
I
t begins  in 1772 Charles Town, South Carolina with a Frenchman landing in a colony on the verge of irreversible decisions. At the time, I did not realize the series would be five novels, but my characters and pen with God’s blessings spurred me on.

Hold Me Close, Book One (2018)—1772-1773

         Surround Me, Book Two (2019)—1773-1774

Bring Me Near, Book Three (2019)—1775

Draw Me to Your Side, Book Four (2020)—1776

Wait for Me, Book Five (2021)—1777-1782

Marguerite Gray Marguerite Gray Marguerite Gray Marguerite Gray Marguerite Gray

Each installment adds another layer of consequences, danger, commitment, heartache, and fear—all with the hope of resolution. Released on February 9, 2021, the back cover blurb of Wait for Me, the final book in the series, reads: A city, under siege by the British, catapults toward surrender, while the citizens wait for deliverance. Waiting for rescue, for deliverance…the only hope is in their revolutionary faith.

While I wrote each book, questions formed about how anyone could live at that time under less than ideal or normal circumstances.

Marguerite GrayWhy marry and begin a family? How do you carry on day to day without promise of supplies and basic comforts? How do you choose a side, especially the rebellious side of a Patriot? Add a siege and British occupation, I think I would be a bit insane. Except…for God’s promises and control. Basically, that is what we all have for certain. Any one reading this has gone through the pandemic and a year of few answers. Nothing stayed the same with jobs, health, finances, conveniences, social events, church, family. Nothing the same except…God. His consistent love and promise of a brighter future in His world remain.

The American Revolution contained battles, death, poverty, starvation, epidemics, loss of family members and jobs. But the believers, although challenged, waited in hope for an answer, a conclusion to their plights.

I have enjoyed the research for this series.

For the first book, I purchased, read, and studied 25 different resources. I added 20 more books for the other novels. The knowledge in those volumes made the historical background of the series authentic and reliable. What a pool of historic figures I had at my fingertips. I chose Christopher Gadsden—a leader of the Sons of Liberty and the Patriot cause in Charles Town, John and Abigail Adams, Francis Marion, and Benjamin Franklin. My characters have the awesome tasks of interacting with some of the greatest heroes of the American Revolution.

Marguerite GrayIn my writing I incorporate my motto: Entertain. Educate. Encourage. I find fiction to be the best example of entertainment. I can get lost for hours in a novel. Because I am a constant student, I want to learn something. With historical novels, the education element is easy. As a Christian writer, I attempt to encourage the reader with life situations with inspirational solutions. Encounters with God’s love and grace in difficult circumstances leads to growth and purpose.

Come enjoy the spectacular journey of the Lestarjette family living in an epicenter of conflict for over a decade. Find your hope in their journey.

If you have not begun the series, you can begin with Hold Me Close. Please realize each novel can stand alone if you chose to read just one.

Thank you and enjoy the journey.

Tasha Hackett on Let’s Chat

Welcome, everyone!

Tasha HackettTasha Hackett is our honored guest this week. Tasha is the author of the Hearts of the Midwest series that begins with her debut novel, Bluebird on the Prairie, a witty historical romance set in Nebraska in 1879.

Tasha Hackett is fueled by sunshine or homemade chocolate, whichever is more readily available. She proudly sings every word of the Wee Sing Silly Songs and often pretends to be a ballerina while unloading the dishwasher. But she favors writing to entertain and encourage women. She devotes most of her time with four chatty children and an incredibly supportive husband. They give her the kind of love people write books about.

Please welcome Tasha Hackett and join in the chat below.

Welcome, Tasha Hackett

Tasha Hackett here! Author of Bluebird on the Prairie. What a treat to be where I am today. And yes, I’m talking about the chance to sit in the chilly basement guest-bedroom. My husband is wrangling the kids and dinner while I bust out a few thousands words on my laptop. Can anyone else raise a hallelujah to that?

I’m fueled by sunshine or hot chocolate, whichever is more readily available. Though I proudly sing every word of the Wee Sing Silly Songs and often pretend to be a ballerina while unloading the dishwasher, my favorite thing is writing to entertain and encourage women. Most of my time is spent with four chatty children and an incredibly supportive husband. They give me the kind of love people write books about.

Writing books I want to read is my main game. For the most part, I want to read happily-ever-afters and I want to laugh and I want to cry a little, and I want to be reminded there’s a God in heaven who loves us more than an earthly father ever could.

Twelve-year-old Tasha totally saw this coming.

Tasha HackettIn truth, Twelve-year-old me would not be surprised to see my name on the cover of a book. She’d say, “Well, sure! That’s what writers do. They write books. Duh.” Probably she’d roll her eyes, too. I was such a sassy twelve-year-old.

Somewhere between twelve and thirty the rest of my life happened and my author vision was lost.

But one evening, with 34 prom dresses to be altered and the kids asleep for the night, I sat near a pile of red satin, carefully trimming four layers of tulle. Then my husband asked, “If you wrote a book, what would it be about?” From there we launched into an enthralling conversation about what he would write about: A zombie apocalypse. No thanks to the zombies, I was inspired.

Only three and a half years later, I completed my first manuscript: Bluebird on the Prairie. Sadly for him, my story completely lacks zombies, science, sci-fi or sports. I set out to create a witty romance while exploring themes of hope and grief and finding love again.

Tasha Hackett: I almost quit writing.

After finishing my first novel, I made the decision to wait a good, long time before tackling another one. I wasn’t even convinced of seeking publication. Motherhood is more important… and being a homemaker is more important… I just couldn’t do it all. It’s true! If I had to choose, I would and I could.

Then my husband said, I think you should keep writing.”

You guys!!! My heart filled to bursting. This feeling in my chest was an honest-to-goodness physical response. Like an opening in my heart that grew and spread and filled up with all the happiness it could hold. It bubbled up and pushed out a few tears.

He told me in six words that he doesn’t mind doing his own laundry.

Tasha HackettNow we’re finally here, launching my debut novel. Bluebird on the Prairie is a witty historical romance set in Nebraska in 1879.

From the back: Haunted by nightmares of her husband’s death, Eloise Davidson struggles to find peace. Obviously, God messed up. When she meets a clumsy traveler who tumbles down a creek bank at her feet, she is more than willing to forget the whole embarrassing thing ever happened. Eloise worries about enough without entertaining silly daydreams. But when Zeke threatens the safety net she’s built around herself, she’s not prepared for how her world will change.

Ezekiel “Zeke” James is on the adventure of a lifetime—riding horseback all the way to California. Orphaned at 12 years old, he’s used to making his own way. What he’s not used to is the urge to stay put, especially when the object of his distraction is off-limits. The memory of Mrs. Davidson dressed only in a wet chemise in the creek proves difficult to ignore though. Amid their awkward first—and second—meetings, false assumptions, and a salty soup, Zeke’s plans to venture west begin to unravel.

Will Eloise and Zeke find their happily ever after or will their own plans and limited understanding of one another’s past tear them apart?

More about Bluebird on the Prairie  by Tasha Hackett here!

The clumsy antics of the hero, huge misunderstandings, and a humorous brother/sister relationship will keep you smiling, but you may need a tissue as the heroine works through her grief. Thankfully, word on the street is the story has a happily-ever-after. If I’ve promised you chocolate cake, I will give you chocolate cake. Lastly, for those of you wondering, “Okay, but is he going to kiss her already???” Well… you really ought to just read it for yourself and find out.

Tasha Hackett: Hearing from my readers is my favorite thing.

Can we be friends? It helps me feel less like a nerd who hangs out with imaginary friends all day. I would love to connect with you at www.TashaHackett.com. While you are there, be sure to sign up for my newsletter where I send out short stories and author updates.

Sheila Stovall: Let’s Chat

Welcome, Everyone!

Sheila StovallSheila Stovall, author of Christian contemporary women’s fiction, joins us this week. Welcome, Sheila!

Shelia is the director of a small-town library in southern Kentucky, where only strangers mention her last name, and the children call her Miss Shelia.

It tickles her to see shocked expressions when folks learn she’s traveling to Africa—again. She says she’s the worst missionary ever, but God continues to send her to the ends of the earth as He attempts to mold her into something useful.

Shelia is a country girl who relishes eating a bologna sandwich at a country store just as much as savoring an elegant meal in a posh restaurant. She and her husband Michael live on a farm, and she enjoys taking daily rambles to the creek with their three dogs. Spending time with family, especially her grandchildren, is her all-time favorite thing. The only hobby Shelia loves more than reading uplifting stories of hope is writing them.

For her Let’s Chat blog circle, she will give away a themed gift basket from Habegger’s Amish Market. Habegger’s is the inspiration for the Wide Spot Country Store, which was included in her lead magnet, A Sassy Creek Christmas. Emma Baker, the heroine of Every Window Filled with Light, is a minor character in A Sassy Creek Christmas. Readers can still download a free e-book of her novella to sample her writing by clicking this link: https://dl.bookfunnel.com/l9y1q8ne8p.

Items in the basket include a jar of Brother’s Maple Farm pure maple syrup, a pint of Countryside honey, a bag of Walnut Creek Popcorn, and a sampling of three teas: spearmint tea, lemon soufflé tea, and strawberry cream team.

A Word From Sheila Stovall

When I was younger, I daydreamed about becoming an author after discovering books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was a country girl and loved her prairie stories.

In the summer of 2011, I participated in a Bible study called Jonah by Priscilla Shirer. After meditating on the question, What does God want you to do that you don’t want to do. God spoke to me. Write a book for me. My heartbeat quickened as God gave me the opening and the ending of the story. I envisioned a large two-story yellow Victorian home with every Window filled with light.

I started writing the story, but it was too hard, and I gave up. My Ninevah was Africa because instead of finishing the story, I traveled on a short-term mission team to Niger. A year later, when cleaning my home, I discovered my laptop under the bed covered in dust. I gulped as I remembered God asking me to write a book. With trepidation, I opened the computer and read the first few pages of the story I’d started. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great. I whined to God. I don’t have the skills or the talent to write a book.

An Unexpected Message

Sheila StovallThen, I received an email in my work email account promoting a Christian writers’ conference. To this day, it is still the only email I’ve received at work advertising a writers’ conference. I could hardly breathe as I read the email promoting the writers’ workshop to be held at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, TX—a long way from Kentucky. I shared everything with my husband, and he encouraged me to go even though we didn’t have the money. He reminded me we had a travel credit in our airline account because of connection problems during our first trip to Africa. So, I packed my bags.

When I attended the conference, two instructors, New York Times best-selling author Lisa Wingate and Judy Christie, changed my life when they encouraged me to finish the story. Judy asked me to commit to writing one hour a day, and she predicted I’d finish the first draft by Thanksgiving if I’d stick with it. The conference was held in October, and I thought her expectations impossible. I didn’t meet her goal, but I finished the first draft on 12/12/12. I’ll never forget that morning. It’s a good thing I had no idea of the work ahead of me.

Getting a book published by a traditional publisher is difficult. You must acquire an agent, and that hurdle can take years. Through the years of hard work, God has been faithful to provide encouragement and help along the road to publication. If there is anything good in Every Window Filled with Light, it is from Him and the people he sent to aid me. The best blessings of the writing journey are the friendships I’ve made along the way.

Every Window Filled with Light by Sheila Stovall

Sheila StovallI hope you’ll read Every Window Filled with Light or give it to someone who needs an uplifting story of hope. If there’s a person you know who doesn’t know Christ and doesn’t want to listen to a witness, this is a book you can share. I hope the reader will be so drawn into the story they won’t realize they are being exposed to God’s salvation plan until it’s too late.

If you want to order the book, click on this link. https://amzn.to/3mJo1vm

You might ask your public library to order a copy.  If so, cut and paste the line below and send an email. [ISBN 978-1-64949-170-1 (trade paperback), Every Window Filled with Light by Shelia Stovall]

If you read the book, please leave an Amazon and Goodreads review. If you need to know how to write an Amazon review or Goodreads review, send an email to Shelia@SheliaStovall.com

Thank you for taking the time to learn about why I wrote Every Window Filled with Light. Has God ever asked you to do something you didn’t want to do?  I’d love to hear your story.

Warm regards,

Shelia

Denise Weimer on Let’s Chat

Welcome, everyone.

Denise WeimerDenise Weimer is our author guest this week. This is a return visit for Denise, so you may have met her before. But she’s such a fine writer, you’ll want to know her latest news.

Denise writes historical and contemporary romance and romantic suspense, mostly set in her home state of Georgia. She’s a wife and a mother of two young adult daughters, and she always pauses for coffee, chocolate, and old houses.

Denise has authored a dozen traditionally published novels and a number of novellas. As a managing editor for Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, she also gets to help others reach their publishing dreams.

“There’s nothing like rejoicing with an author when they first see their book cover and again on release day,” says Denise.

Denise Weimer, a word from the author

Denise Weimer here, very pleased to join you today. I love visiting on Linda’s blog! She always does such a great job as hostess.

How did my latest story, Bent Tree Bride, come about? Well, I absolutely love to read and write romances set on America’s Eastern frontier. There’s endless fodder for an exciting plot intrinsic to the setting.

One of my author/editor friends had the idea for a Native Patriots Series where the heroes would all have served in a different American war. I chose the War of 1812 because I’d just written a novel set in the decade prior.

The Witness Tree by Denise Weimer, story of Moravian marriage of convenience and dangerous assignment in Cherokee Territory c. 1805

The Moravians are now a mainline denomination, but during the 1700s and early 1800s, they were a lesser-known sect of plain people with some fascinating traditions. How neat, I thought, if one of the boys from the Moravian mission school for the children of Cherokee chiefs could grow up and fight in the Cherokee Regiment during the War of 1812.

Many people have no idea that—in hopes of keeping their land—the Cherokees fought alongside the Americans under Andrew Jackson. For the same reason, many of the Creek Indians allied with the British, becoming known as Red Stick Creeks. Thus, the war for what became Alabama Territory, the Red Stick War, occurred in 1813-14. At the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, the Cherokee Regiment turned the tide of battle in favor of the Americans.

The series didn’t get picked up, but I’m glad I get to share my story with you through Smitten Historical Romance. It’s the type of forbidden love story and heart-pounding action that I hope echoes my favorite movie, Last of the Mohicans.I sure think the cover does!

A note to the sensitive reader … while I cut some battle scenes short and avoided unnecessary detail as much as possible, some intense fight scenes are part of the plot. Part of Sam’s interior journey reflects the effort to balance the scholar and the warrior—like the two wolves of Cherokee lore. His personal struggle is representative of the larger struggle of his people … whether to embrace the education and ways of the white man or keep their tribal traditions. Added to this an attraction to his colonel’s daughter at a time when it was uncommon for a mixed-blood man to marry a white woman, and you have plenty of conflict!

Step into the Southern frontier during the War of 1812 with Bent Tree Bride by Denise Weimer

Susanna Moore can’t get him out of her mind—the learned lieutenant who delivered the commission from Andrew Jackson making her father colonel of the Cherokee Regiment. But the next time she sees Lieutenant Sam Hicks, he’s leading a string of prisoners into a frontier fort, and he’s wearing the garb of a Cherokee scout rather than the suit of a white gentleman.

As both Susanna’s father and Sam’s commanding officer, Colonel Moore couldn’t have made his directive to stay away from his daughter clearer to Sam. He wants a better match for Susanna—like the stuffy doctor who escorted her to Creek Territory. Then a suspected spy forces Moore to rely on Sam for military intelligence and Susanna’s protection, making it impossible for either to guard their heart.

I hope you’re sufficiently intrigued to pick up a copy of Bent Tree Bride. I do believe it’s my best writing yet. Buy link: https://www.amazon.com/Bent-Tree-Bride-Denise-Weimer-ebook/dp/B08Q8K5YD6

Elaine Marie Cooper: Let’s Chat

Welcome to Let’s ChatElaine Cooper

Elaine Marie Cooper honors us this week. Although books always enthralled her, she never thought she’d become a writer. From the age of 5, even before she could read, she’d check out eight library books at a time. As she stared at the words, she knew they translated into wonderful stories she could interpret someday. Reading was her goal.

Please give Elaine Marie Cooper a hearty welcome.

Elaine Marie Cooper: Hello Book Lovers!

Before I talk about myself, let me say THANK YOU for being a faithful devourer of books. Whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, readers keep our written words alive. As a result, we who spend hours researching and writing chapters are so very grateful for each and every one of you.

When I was eight-years-old, and by now, a reader, my family moved to Massachusetts. That’s where I became passionate about U.S. history. Surrounded by monuments to the soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, I gathered books on the topic. I could never learn enough about Colonial America or about the Americans who fought to form this country.

I still never thought I would someday write about it.

Elaine Cooper: God drew me to Himself

Elaine Cooper_Bible

At the age of twenty-one, God did an amazing work in my heart when he drew me to Himself. I realized I was a sinner and receive His precious gift of forgiveness.  In doing so, I learned to treasure THE book above all books: the Bible. Within a year I’d met my future husband at a church event. After we married, God blessed us with two sons and a daughter. Both my heart and household were full.

One of our favorite excursions involved trips to the library. We spent hours there, perusing the short stacks of wonderful children’s books.  It was better than hunting for gold as the books contained far greater treasures of adventure, touching dramas and feats of bravery. Some of my children could not yet read but, like their Mom, they knew the words contained hidden secrets.  What a joy when they discovered the secret to reading!

Professional Writing for Elaine Marie Cooper

Elaine Cooper_writing padMy first foray into professional writing seemed like a fluke. As many moms know, the everyday tasks of taking care of little ones and keeping a house can be stressful. As many discover when under stress, humor helps! When I’d write down silly poems about my Mom adventures, it helped relieve the daily strain.

One day, my husband took my poems into the newspaper office where he worked. The features editor caught a glimpse of them and expressed interest in my writing skills. Would I be willing to write feature stories for the paper, she asked?

I never thought I’d be asked such a question and responded with a hearty “yes.”

Life as a Freelance Writer

The local newspapers had annual contests for various categories so I entered a couple of my stories. No one was more shocked than I when I won a second and third place.

Freelancing stories to various periodicals became my main writing gig for years. I had stories run in Better Homes & Gardens, Life: Beautiful, HomeLife, and American Ferret magazine. Yes, there really was such a publication! When you write for freelance work, one must be flexible!

Tragedy Strikes

Bethany Cooper

Life moved along quickly as the kids grew up and started their own careers. But then our lives turned upside down and it has never quite been the same. The worst news struck at the heart of our family when my daughter was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. By now I was a RN and writing part time. I had to put my nursing job on hold while becoming the caregiver for my daughter. Suddenly all the lesser concerns in life became smaller.

Bethany was just 23 when the diagnosis came in. She did not live to see her 25th birthday.

Elaine Marie Cooper

I tried writing for a church publication after her death. While the story was accepted, I put down my writer’s pen. I decided I would never write again since it stirred up too much pain in my heart.

Returning to my job as a school nurse, l immersed myself in work and church. But my life had taken such an unexpected and cruel twist, that I felt I’d never be the same. I never did ask God, “Why me?” As a nurse I’d seen tragedy visit so many families. But the pain of losing a child is unlike any other. You never fully recover, but learn to somehow live with it.

Elaine Marie Cooper’s Life as a Novelist

Elaine Marie CooperEvery year on the anniversary of Bethany’s death, I stayed in bed, hidden under the covers.  Until the 4th year.  That year I received an inaudible but very clear command from the Lord. I was to write a book set in the American Revolution. At first I ignored the inner prompt, thinking I might be imagining it. Until I “heard” it again. I threw off the bed covers and found my husband. I assumed he’d think I was crazy but instead, he took me to the used bookstore. My research had begun, along with my life as a writer of books.

Eight books later and contracted for two more, I still find it mind boggling that I am an author. But God showed me that, when He’s in my life, anything is possible. Scarred Vessels is a Finalist in the 2021 Selah Awards for historical romance! Winner will be announced in May at the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference.

Scarred Vessels

Elaine Marie CooperIn 1778 Rhode Island, the American Revolution rallies the Patriots to fight for freedom. But the slavery of black men and women from Africa, bartered for rum, is a travesty that many in America cannot ignore. The seeds of abolition are planted even as the laws allowing slavery in the north still exist.

Lydia Saunders, the daughter of a slave ship owner, grew up with the horror of slavery. It became more of a nightmare when, at a young age, she is confronted with the truth about her father’s occupation. She is burdened with the guilt of her family’s sin as she struggles to make a difference in whatever way she can. When she loses her husband in the battle for freedom from England, she makes a difficult decision that will change her life forever.

Sergeant Micah Hughes is too dedicated to serving the fledgling country of America to consider falling in love. When he carries the tragic news to Lydia Saunders about her husband’s death, he is appalled by his attraction to the young widow. Micah wrestles with his feelings for Lydia while he tries to focus on helping the cause of freedom. He trains a group of former slaves to become capable soldiers on the battlefield

Tensions both on the battlefield and on the home front bring hardship and turmoil. When Lydia and Micah are faced with saving the life of a black infant in danger, can they survive this turning point in their lives?

Lori Bates Wright on Let’s Chat

Welcome to Let’s Chat, everyone!

Lori Bates Wright

Lori Bates Wright, bestselling author of Christian historical romance, joins us this week.

Lori is a child of the Southwest. Raised in New Mexico, she now calls Texas home with her husband of 38 years. She has two grown kids and four grandboys that leap tall buildings in a single bound! The only thing she loves more than family (and books) is Jesus. Her sincerest hope is that her readers sense His deep, abounding love in her writing.

Lori Bates Wright, Welcome!

Hi, y’all. I’m Lori Bates Wright. It’s a pleasure to be with you today. Thank you for having me, Linda, and for this opportunity to share my heart with your readers.

Here we are in the middle of Holy Week, the week leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God. As I recall the events of this week two thousand years ago, I can’t help but think about all the Marys in Jesus’ life. Every year, I wonder the same thing. Why were the most significant women in His life – at least the ones named in the Bible – mostly named Mary?

When Linda invited me to post on Let’s Chat and I saw that my post would fall during this sacred week, I decided maybe it’s time to take a closer look at these Marys that meant so much to the Lord.

A Closer Look at the Marys by Lori Bates Wright

Lori Bates WrightFirst off, there was Mary, Mother of Jesus, a young Hebrew girl from Nazareth. The gospels tell us she was chosen and highly favored to bring forth the Messiah.

Luke 1:28
The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Next, Mary of Magdala. A Galilean prostitute to whom Jesus showed immeasurable grace by saving her from certain death and delivering her from seven demons.

Luke 8:2
and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out

Finally, one of my favorites was Mary of Bethany, sister of Lazarus. The Bible tells us she adored Jesus. She sat at his feet to learn all she could. Her brother died, and the honesty of her tears affected Jesus so much that this was the only account given where Jesus wept, too. She brought her most costly possession to anoint his feet, even when others around her scoffed and rebuked her for it. Mary recognized him as Lord. She loved Him much and was much loved.

Mark 16:6-8 Lori Bates Wright
“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the
place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’” Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
Lori Bates Wright: What did they have in common?

Their name. Which meant bitter and rebellious in their native tongue.

Much like I was when Jesus found me.

It finally dawned on me ~ Jesus looked past what the world labeled these women. He no longer saw them as rebellious and bitter. He called them Chosen. Highly favored. Redeemed. And Beloved.

And He calls me the same.
