In Times of Violence, A YA Book of Epic Proportions

Today, I’m bringing to you an author that I love–not only her writing, but her as a person. She is releasing a brand new YA book called In Times of Violence. You will love the main character, Jade, with her strength and verve as Karina draws you in from the beginning and opens your eyes to life in a gang with heart.

Welcome, Karina, please tell us about your new book….

In Times of Violence

MC Romance Young Adult Edition

Jade had been sheltered most of her life. Living in an isolated village with only sex and drugs to entertain. Her mother is an alcoholic and her father doesn’t give a damn.

Her only way out is to beg her Aunt to allow her to stay as a guest in their London house.

Jade meets fate head on in the form of Marcus, president of the Tyrants MC. She finally finds a family that loves and respects her and they are not BLOOD. Nothing comes easy to Jade and she is forced to fight to keep her title and status. Then just when life starts to go right, one-night changes everything.

˃˃˃ A raw emotional story about love, betrayal and sacrifice.

“In Times of Violence had an addictive storyline. I actually got up in the middle of the night to finish reading it. I loved Jade, although I don’t fully understand her or her motives.”

“Do not miss this book. Jade, Marcus and Dylan will bring out the feels.”

“Remember it’s not always blood relatives that make a family!”

˃˃˃ From the Author

In Times of Violence is very special to me.  Some parts of the book are taken from my own experiences as a young adult. This coming of age story needed to be told. It was thanks to S.E.Hinton’s The Outsiders, that In Times Of Violence was written.

I hope you enjoy the book.

Excerpt

. I had to settle things with my parents. I had to sit them both down and tell them my plans, hoping it would be the last I saw of them. I needed to pack up my belongings and say goodbye to my horrid past, once-and-for-all.

Marcus wanted to come along with me, but I talked him out of it. He wanted to see the cursed life I’d lived, and wanted to meet my mother. I had painted such a black picture of her I knew he wouldn’t be civil and I wanted to leave on good terms, despite everything. Even though she’d abused me, she was still my mother. I managed to convince Marcus to stay home and went alone.

What a nightmare! My first mistake was not having Marcus for moral support. Secondly, I’d chickened out and hadn’t told my dad I was coming. I thought I could cope with just seeing Mum, rather than both of them ganging up on me. Third mistake, I wore my leathers. I think she would have gone easier on me if I had dressed down. Except that wasn’t who I was anymore. I wasn’t ashamed of who I’d become. I was proud to be a member of the Tyrants. I wasn’t going to shout it from the rooftops. I didn’t come home to show off and give the villagers something else to gossip about. I wanted to get in and out without anyone seeing me.

Mum wasn’t home when I arrived, so I used my key and let myself in. The house smelt of stale cigarettes, and damp. No change there, I thought. I’d only been in the room for a few seconds and already wanted to leave. Memories flooded like a wave, trying to drown my good spirits. I didn’t want to remember the unhappiest moments of my childhood. Literally shaking myself from the past, I cursed aloud for putting up with her shit for so long.

I expected her home soon, so I ran upstairs and started packing. I couldn’t take everything, just my treasured possessions. I’d been so busy, I didn’t realise how quickly the time passed. A door slammed shut, making me jump.

“Mum, it’s Jade. I’m up here.”

I didn’t want her to think I was a burglar. Maybe I should have phoned first.

Any loving mother would have run up the stairs and hugged her long-lost daughter, but not my mother. I timed her. It took her a full ten minutes before she came up. I heard the familiar tinkle of ice hitting the bottom of a glass, and the cabinet door being shut. Dutch courage, I wished I had some.

“Well, look what the cat’s dragged in. Decided to come home have you?”

Leaning against the doorframe, she held a glass in her right hand, a cigarette in her left. She looked a sight. Her hair needed cutting and dyeing, and I hate to think how long she’d been wearing the same clothes. She looked thin and haggard and had really let herself go. I turned away, unable to look at her in that state.

“I’ve come for a few things. I’m leaving, but is it okay if I stay the night?” I asked, pretending to be too busy to look at her.

She didn’t answer. Her stare burnt into my back, and I knew she was going to start.

I stopped packing and faced her. I wasn’t scared. I wasn’t a weak, timid little girl anymore.

“Go on, say it,” I challenged her. “Get it out of your system, Mum.”

“Have you seen yourself? Look at the state of you. You look like a cheap street tramp.”

I kept my cool. “You’re a fine one to talk, you’re a fucking mess.”

She stared at me open-mouthed before launching into her usual ‘how dare you…’ crap. “I’m your mother. I deserve more respect.”

I lost it then.

“You’re not fit to be a mother. You’ve no idea how to look after yourself, let alone a child. You should be giving me respect. Do you know who I am, Mum?” Although tempted to tell her everything, I decided to keep my mouth shut. “For the first time in my life, I’m happy, and I have a life, no thanks to you. I have a great boyfriend and loads of friends. So, if anyone deserves respect, it’s me.”

She looked livid, and seemed ready to pounce, which would have been a big mistake on her part. Although my mother, I’d gladly take her down a peg or two.

“I think you better get out of here before I lose my temper,” I warned.

“This is my house. No one tells me what to do in my own home,” she shouted, spilling her drink on the floor.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Calm down, Mum. Why don’t you get another drink before you have a heart attack?”

She didn’t find that amusing and charged at me. “You little bitch. I’ll teach you not to talk to your mother like that.”

I stood my ground and pushed her away. She fell drunkenly to the floor. If she wanted a fight, she would get one. She sat on the floor glaring at me, trying to decide what to do next. Luckily for her, she made the right decision. Pushed herself up from the floor, she patted down her blouse and looked at me before turning around.

“You’ve got minutes to get out of my house then I’m calling the police.”

That was fine with me. I’d packed what I wanted.

She walked unsteadily down the stairs. I felt nothing but pity for her.

Five minutes had passed before I made a move to get up. My head was pounding. I went into the bathroom and opened the tap, letting the water run until it was ice cold, then I splashed my face and used my wet hands to cool my aching neck and shoulders. I cursed her for winding me up. I lifted my head and stared at my reflection. I didn’t like what I saw. “Shit,” I yelled and smashed my fist into the glass. It didn’t break, which left me feeling pathetic and weak.

I honestly didn’t want anything to kick off like that. I hoped I could leave on good terms, but our broken bridges couldn’t be mended.

I walked down the stairs with my suitcases and set them down near the front door. Mum was sitting in her armchair, staring out of the front window, a full drink in her hand. I didn’t blame her. I needed one right then.

Even with the anger I was feeling, the bond between mother and daughter was strong enough to break down the portion of hate I felt towards her. I remember thinking that it could be the last time I would see her and I refused to leave without saying goodbye. But I knew I wouldn’t have it returned. Her stubbornness wouldn’t let her turn and look at me once last time.

“Mum,” I said gently and heard the quivering in my voice. Hell! If I cried now, if I lost it and broke down, then she would win. There was no way in hell I was going to let that happen “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to leave like this. I want you to know I’m happy and doing well. Take care, and tell Dad I love him.”

She didn’t answer me.

I wiped my face, picked up my bags, stood up straight, and took a deep breath before walking out of the house for the last time.

In Times of Violence was originally written as a YA as Karina was 19 when she broke up with her first love, a biker she had been seeing for four years.

Then there were three more Outlaw MC novels; Huntress, Lawless Justice and Road Rage. In between witting those books, she published a YA supernatural thriller – Stone Cold, and two collections of short stories – Heads & Tales and Undressed.

After putting the four MC books together into the OUTLAW series, Karina then turned her hand to fantasy and has won many awards for her romantic paranormal fantasy, Illusional Reality and it has since become her best seller. Illusional Realty, The Quest, the concluding part of this duology will be released 12/2017 2017

Introducing the Talking Tales Book Series–Books that Help your Child Learn Sounds While they Read

Hello, everyone!

I have a very special author to introduce to you today. Her name is Erica Graham. I made her through the world-wide-web and thought her books were unique and awesome. I think you will too.

Welcome, Erica–tell us about your Talking Tales Series….

About the Talking Tales Series

The Talking Tales books are not only fun stories, but they serve a unique purpose. This exciting new series is also designed to help with speech development.

When a child is learning to speak, he or she first learns how words sound by observing. Each book in the Talking Tales series is focused on a different core sound in its naturally occurring word positions, thus increasing a child’s awareness and helping him or her learn how to properly produce the targeted sound. In fact, the targeted sound appears in each book at least 65-150+ times to provide children with multiple examples of how the sound should be produced depending on its possible surrounding sounds and where it is located in the word. For example, a sound may be more difficult to produce at the middle or end of a word than in the beginning. Or it may be more difficult to produce in a blend, such as “st” or “sw”. Each book provides examples of the most common ways a sound may occur to allow the child to develop an extensive understanding of that sound.

The author, Erica Graham, firmly believes that parents and caregivers are the most important people in a child’s life. For this reason, she has included some speech tips in the front of each book so that these books can be used in a home setting.

There are currently 4 books in the Talking Tales series. Graham’s most recent award winning book is Talking Tales: Puppy’s Bubble. This engaging story is a fun way to read to Talking Tales: Puppy's Bubble Book cover by Erica Grahamlittle ones while promoting babbling, early words and language skills. It provides over 90 examples of some of the earliest developing sounds in their most common word positions including “p”, “b”, “m”, “n”, “d” and “h”. In addition to helping with speech development, Puppy’s Bubble makes an excellent early reader book with its repetitive sounds and engaging story.

Biography

Award winning author Erica Graham graduated from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville with her Master of Arts Degree in Speech Language Pathology. She also holds her Certificate of Clinical Competence with the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. As a mother of two, Erica understands the difficulty parents have finding time and ways to work on speech with their children.  In her pursuit to create a fun easy way for therapists, children, and their parents to enhance speech development while promoting literacy, she has written a series of exciting children’s books.  Each book focuses on a core sound used in the English language. Outside of writing and working as a Speech Language Pathologist, Erica enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and daughters, volunteering with the youth group at church, and a good cup of tea.

Talking Tales: Puppy’s Bubble

When Puppy wakes up from a nap, he sees a bubble. When it disappears, Puppy begins his long journey to find the missing bubble. Will Puppy find the bubble, or has it vanished forever? This engaging story is a fun way to read to little ones while promoting babbling, early words and language skills. Pete Davies, A Mystery, Suspense, & Comedy Writer for Children

Happy Labor Day, everyone! I hope this post finds you happy and relaxing.

One of my favorite things to do is to introduce you to new children’s authors.

Recently, I had the good fortune to meet Pete Davies, through the miracle of the world-wide-web via Facebook. I believe you’re going to love his books.

So, without further ado, let’s welcome Pete…..

Hi there!

My name is Pete Davies and I am a children’s author from England. I originally started work as a diver in the North Sea but spent my spare time, writing, painting, and playing the guitar.

My first book, which was released a month ago, is a comedy children’s novel for 9-12 year-olds called, Hacker Gran. It tells the story of Mimi Slickton, your average, harmless, suburban, law abiding granny. That is, until the bank stops paying her money. That’s when she decides to take the law into her own hands…

About two weeks ago, it reached number 2 in Amazon USA Kindle Edition mystery/thriller & suspense which was great.

Although it’s been reviewed in the UK, I don’t have many reviewers in America. So, if you are interested, I would be delighted if you would review my book! (See details at the bottom of this page).

My second book, which is part of a series, is called, The Adventures of Puppy Poor Paw. It is another children’s comedy which tells the story of a King Charles Spaniel whose life is about to change. While Christmas shopping with mum and dad, he is attacked and left for dead by two bungling teenagers, Jerv and Nunky.

With his memory gone, he seeks help from a group of lost puppies but soon realizes that he holds a secret which the evil Dr. Kunopegos is desperate to steal from him.

As the clock starts ticking, Puppy Poor Paw still doesn’t know what that secret is–and he just may not live long enough to find out!

If you want to receive FREE pre-release Pete Davies book copies before they are released and become a trusted reviewer then click here or simply drop me a line at pete@petedaviesbooks.com or visit my website www.petedaviesbooks.com

I look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you, Pete, for joining us today.

Congratulations on your #2 ranking. Your books sound absolutely adorable and fun.

I want to encourage all my US readers to please reach out to Pete and read and review his books.

Reviews help authors more than you can know by encouraging other potential readers to purchase and enjoy the book too!

Dear Diary (a children’s book about bullying)

Hi, Everyone!

I have another fabulous author to introduce you to today with a very important message in her children’s book called Dear Diary.

Have you ever moved and been the new kid in school? Or been the target of bullying? This book addresses both.

Please welcome Susan Horsnell as she tells us about her book…

DEAR DIARY,

Rebecca is an eleven-year-old girl whose father has taken a job in a new town.

This means she is forced into a new school.

Shorter than most her age, and not quite as intelligent, makes her a prime target for ongoing bullying.

The only thing she can trust in, confide in, is her Diary.

A story about the real danger of bullying which every child should read.

This story is fictional but based on a true to life event.

About the Author

I have written two children’s books during my career.

This is my second, dedicated to my nephew who took his own life just a few weeks after he turned twelve years old.

I have five grandchildren who are subjected to bullying, a coward’s way of displaying power over another and occurs at any age.

Hopefully, through this book, both children and adults will learn how dangerous bullying can be. It’s not something which can be dismissed as a childhood ‘stage.’

My first book – Secret Beneath the House – is the story of two children left alone for the day. What they find under the house is another magical world.

I also write Best Selling/Award Winning Western Romance and Best Selling Contemporary Romance under a pen name.

I have been married for 43 years, have 2 married sons and 5 gorgeous grandchildren.

Hubby and I are retired and love to travel Australia with our caravan, our elderly Jack Russell dog – Caellagh (Kelly) and a very opinionated Cockatiel called Rocky.

‘The Toilet Papers’–Your New Best Friend in the Bathroom

I’d like to introduce all of you to one of my favorite YA authors, Jaimie Engle. She recently published a book that I think you’ll enjoy called The Toilet Papers, so I invited her to share more about it here today.

Thanks, Wanda for having me on your blog.

A bit about me? I write fiction where magic turns ordinary into extraordinary for those who enjoy YA books. I’ve been writing since I fell into Alice in Wonderland at age 7 and have won awards for several of my stories and books. I also have a pretty cool company called Wick Books™, which are handcrafted candles based on magical drinks from my books. When I’m not writing, I speak to kids about bullying and teach authors about marketing their books. You can learn more about me and my products at www.thewriteengle.com.

My latest release, The Toilet Papers, came about after many of my short stories were [image error]published in small, but brilliant anthologies. I love these stories. They helped me to develop my voice, characters, and plotting before I felt courageous enough to tackle an entire novel. But no one was reading them in those books.

One day, I was thinking about my toilet book…you know, that one book that you ONLY read when you’ve got to go. I hate how sometimes I only need to go long enough to read a few pages or even paragraphs and then the next time I go, I can’t remember where I am in the story. Or I can get a chapter or two in on some occasions (farfrompoopin’!), but still, run into the problem of remembering the story.

And then, it hit me: What if there was a book separated by degrees of bowel movements? The Toilet Papers was born.  Places to go…while you go….

Wanda was gracious enough to share her platform with me, so I’d like to share something with you. A short selection from the book as a member of The Write Engle Fan Club and a video link to learn all about my book launch, how I gained endorsement by Squatty Potty©, and my OFFICIAL book trailer link.

In case you’re on the fence, here’s what reviewers and editors have to say:

“Your description and world building are top notch. Your period dialogue works well.” –Brian, Editor at Blue Shift Magazine for “English Channel”

“I really like the central idea of the story. I liked the ending. That is the best part of the story. Also, the metallic gold body suit she was wearing was a nice touch.” –Dave, Editor at 4 Star Stories for “English Channel”

“The most terrible monster is the one close enough to touch, that still can’t be stopped, no matter how hard you wish you could. Tonight’s story, provided by Jaimie M. Engle, is a beautiful, terrifying, monster story. We hope you enjoy it.” –Monster Corral for “Turning”

“Quite an eerie concept. I like the roadside cannibalism and the accent of the vendor gives the setting realism. I also like how the story flows with just enough wording to imply detailed visuals of how the scene plays out. Bravo!” –audiowriter for “Roadside Vendor”

“It’s easy to fall into these narratives, to get lost in the lives of others, while burying deep our own moments of pain and suffering only to have them rise to the surface as these talented authors cull them from our memories, our hauntings, our dark echoes and dried-up tears.” –Richard Thomas, Spark A Creative Anthology for “Moonshine on the Mississip”

“I originally thought this collection would be a bit wacky, and it was certainly unusual, but the surprise element was just how well written they all are…and every story is a gem and a delight to read. Not a dud among them.” –Anita Dawes, Alternate Hilarities for “The Bombastic Adventures of Bob from Planet 9”

“Whenever I read a story by Jaimie Engle, she writes with such pizzazz that I can hear, see, smell everything she writes. I get a totally clear picture of the entire story. Loved these short stories in this book. I give it a two thumbs up.” –Kandi Siegel, Passion for Puns for “Cauc Boy”

“I was immediately drawn to this collection of stories when I read the concept; 100 authors, 100 stories, each story only 100 words! It truly impressed me that anyone is capable of writing a captivating tale in 100 words….in this case, I was impressed 100 times over!” –Joline Devonshire, Another 100 Horrors for “The Asylum of the Dead”

If you’re in love (or just need something new to read in the bathroom) head over to Amazon or my website and grab a copy of your own in paperback or ebook. Thanks in advance. And thanks again, Wanda, for this opportunity!

Thank you, Jaimie, for sharing your latest book with us!

August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse

[image error]Photo free from Pixabay of Solar Eclipse

Since today is the Solar Eclipse, I can’t imagine writing about anything else that anyone would care about! LOL

I was reading about myths and legends surrounding the solar eclipse–many cultures felt the eclipse was a bad omen. Some feared the sun wouldn’t shine again so they shot fiery darts into the air trying to get it to re-ignite. And pregnant women, they had to stay inside or else something horrible might happen to their unborn child. But, the ones I liked were about the sun and the moon being lovers and the eclipse was just them getting together. I’m not sure what a union between a sun and a moon creates–maybe stars.

Anyway, enjoy the eclipse today! Our once-in-a-lifetime event.

And protect your eyes. Better yet, don’t look at the eclipse at all. Watch it on TV or YouTube.

Love and Happiness to Everyone!
