What are some characteristics of successful entrepreneurs?
I have looked at the personality of six hugely successful companies. These are Airbnb (Chesky and Gebbia), Walmart (Sam Walton), Alibaba (Jack Ma), Apple (Steve Jobs), and Tesla (Elon Musk).
Based on this research, I have noted that all these founders had some common personality characteristics, which are:
FocusedUndeterred by failurePassionateSupremely confidentBiographies on these individuals focus on their quirky behavior. For instance, Jobs is portrayed as a foul-mouthed, erratic personality who made life miserable for people. Elon Musk is portrayed as an individual subject to massive mood swings.
But it is the laser focus of these individuals that struck me as probably one of the major causes for the success of their companies.

Why do diets fail ultimately for most of us?
People looking to lose weight either by dieting, exercising, or miracle supplements end up either disappointed, cheated, or hurting themselves.
Dietitians often attract desperate people with claims for giving individuals a diet chart that will cause quick weight loss. Indeed, there is an entire weight loss industry built around miracle solutions.
For us to understand obesity and weight loss, let me answer some common questions.
What causes obesity?
The Centers for Disease Control and World Obesity Federation mention three critical factors that play an essential part in the development of obesity. These are:
Behavior- influences food choices. Behavior management is a useful tool for obesity control. Excess calories get converted into fats. The environment plays a crucial role in shaping our habits and lifestyle. Availability of motorized transport at home, convenience foods, and home entertainment solutions are some factors that determine the low expenditure of energy.Genetics, too, has a role in obesity. Genes can cause disorders resulting in obesity.Obesity is sometimes associated with an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Medications help manage this condition. (Prevalence of Obesity | World Obesity Federation)
Losing weight is best achieved when we proceed systematically. Check with your physician before consulting a weight loss dietitian. Do not pick up one of the weight-loss diets from the ones reviewed earlier or even hire a personal trainer before a medical consultation.
Once the physician’s assessment is completed and the physiological and genetic causes of obesity are ruled out. Suppose any corrective medical interventions are recommended to take care of lifestyle-triggered ailments. If there are no clinical recommendations, then in both cases, we move to the next stage of a weight loss process.
It entails consulting a physical therapist who will recommend an exercise schedule appropriate to your physical condition. In the chapters above, we have talked about simple exercises and yoga routines. Remember, physical therapy is a science of its own. It is best to consult with a physical therapist to arrive at a customized training suited for you.
The next step is diet planning. Many people suffering from obesity make the nutritionist or dietitian the first port of call. To my mind, the role of the dietitians comes into play only after the completion of a thorough clinical examination. Remember, obesity is a disease that requires full attention and treatment. It is essential to address the causes of the condition first before starting any exercise or diet regime.
While you will get a foundational understanding of the best foods that work best for you, diet planning is best done in consultation with an expert. The expert should not just be able to recommend a weekly diet chart for you.
The expert will help you fix short-term and long-term goals and help put a self-monitoring mechanism in place. Behavior and motivation are critical to achieving weight-loss goals and require integration into a weight loss regime.

What is the code of good health?
This is probably best described in the Ayurveda code of health. It is not a code for asceticism. The stress is on personal hygiene, nutrition, diet, procedures, and medication. All these seek to correct imbalances in the human body, which are the root causes of any disease.
The emphasis is further on elegant attire and ornaments, social relations, physical activity, sexual enjoyment, agreeable company, and more. Clearly, the psychological well-being of an individual was regarded as a valuable aid to healing. There are separate chapters on rejuvenating drugs and sexual enjoyment, which, culturally and to some sections of society, appear to be out of tune with Hindu morality.
Ayurveda stresses aligning treatment with the personality of an individual. This aspect of treatment is called Sattva avajaya treatment (Sattva means “mind,” and avajaya means “bringing under control”). The effort of the physician is to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
The human personality, according to Ayurveda, is determined by not just the physiology but also the psychology of an individual. The brain, nervous system, hormonal secretion, and the individual’s personality make up an individual’s personality. Three types of personalities are identified in Ayurveda. These are Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas.
Personality type is associated with the nature or Prakriti of the person. Each personality type is further subdivided into subtypes. There are seven types of Sattvik personalities, six types of Rajasik personalities, and three types of Tamasik personalities. Treatments are modulated according to the personality type and subtype of the individual.
Similar concepts on life and lifestyle are enunciated in Traditional Chinese Medicine fundamental principles.
Many of these ancient concepts of lifestyle are now getting validated through modern scientific studies. For instance, the mind plays an important part in health management. De-stressing is regularly impressed upon.
The concept of lifestyle and good health is a vast and complex subject. I have tried to summarise the subject above. There is much more to it.

Why do business transformation projects fail?
Business transformation succeeds when there the felt need to transform is strong. The role of top leadership is primary, central, and critical. Consultants are there to assist the leadership and not to drive it.
Projects fail when the consultants are left to drive a transformation project with the organization leadership taking the back seat.
Let us take the example of the famous Healthcare reform project that President Barack Obama was keen to implement after promulgating the Affordable Care Act. The Project had Presidential backing, but the organization that was to drive the project – the HHS Agency was lukewarm to the project. The bureaucrats understood that the Affordable Care Act did not have bipartisan support. They did not want to be caught in the crossfire between Democrats and Republicans. However, with the sitting President backing the project, they were forced to implement his directive.
The ambivalence and internal dragging of the feet of the implementation agency led to the bombing of the project. President Obama had to apologize multiple times publically. He was forced to get a crack team of Silicon Valley experts to implement the website and save face.
This and many other similar examples in the public sector and elsewhere teaches u that business transformation requires all-around organization buy-in.

What are healthy carbs? What are foods that contain the best carbs?
Carbohydrates are essential for the human body. They occur naturally in grains, nuts, milk, vegetables, fruit, seeds, legumes.
There are three categories of carbohydrates.
Sugar, which is the simplest form of carbohydrate. It is of three types – fruit sugar (fructose), table sugar (sucrose), and milk sugar (lactose).
Starch is a complex carbohydrate in which multiple sugar units are bonded together. These occur naturally in vegetables, grains, cooked dry beans, peas, etc.
Fiber is yet another form of complex carbohydrate.
Foods are often measured on a glycemic index. The higher a food on the index, the higher the potential of raising the blood sugar level. Weight-loss diets typically recommend limiting foods that are high on the glycemic index. Some examples of such food are potatoes, white bread, snack foods, and desserts containing refined flour. Many healthy foods — such as whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and low-fat dairy products — are lower on the glycemic index.
Healthy carbs will be those that have a low glycemic index. Many of these are rich in dietary fiber, which has added health benefits.

Is it true that whole grape juice offers the same benefits as red wine?
Grapes are a major source of several phytochemicals like flavonoids, polyphenols, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, procyanidins, and stilbene derivative resveratrol. Whole grape juice would contain all these phytochemicals.
As would be expected, grapes are rich in carbohydrates; although, a lot of it is dietary fiber.
They have been found to possess antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective properties (Nassiri— Asl et al., 2009 and Nassiri –Asl et al., 2016). However, the phytochemical composition of grapes varies greatly among different varieties (Jun Yang et al., 2012).
Research has shown that the health-promoting antioxidant properties may be influenced by harvest time, pre-processing ethylene treatment of grapes, and juice thermal pasteurization (Genova et al., 2016)
Flavonoids found in red wine are said to help lower LDL (bad cholesterol). AHA does not recommend the consumption of wine, as contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t reduce the risk of heart diseases.
If the choice is between whole grape juice and red wine, my vote would be in favor of whole grape juice. Provided, of course, if you are not pre-diabetic.

Can I reduce weight by walking?
Many people are looking for a silver bullet to reduce weight with the least effort quickly. Losing weight by walking is one such silver bullet.
Losing weight is best achieved when we proceed systematically. Let me chart for you some of the key points:
It involves recording an individual’s past efforts to achieve weight loss, exercise and eating habits, eating patterns, family and personal medical history, stress levels, and possible causes for stress – work-related, family, and others.
BMI, body composition, waist measurements, and waist-hip ratio provide useful data to estimate obesity.
If there are no clinical recommendations, then in both cases, we move to the next stage of a weight loss process.
The next step is diet planning. An expert best does it. The expert will help you fix short-term and long-term goals and help put a self-monitoring mechanism in place. Behavior and motivation are critical to achieving weight-loss goals and require integration into a weight loss regime.
Weight loss requires a lot of hard work and dedication. But it is certainly doable if done the right way. It requires comprehensive handling. Don’t run after a silver bullet.

Are ginseng and ashwangandha names of the same plant?
Ginseng:
Ginseng comes from the fleshy roots of perennial slow-growing plants belonging to 11 different species and two different genera. There are three popular varieties—Asian, American, and Siberian.
Asian or Korean ginseng is the oldest. The most famous and commonly found ginseng comes from Panax ginseng. American ginseng comes from Panax quinquefolius. Siberian ginseng is from a different genus: Eleutherococcus senticosus.
Three more species of the Panax genus are used in traditional medicine: Panax vietnamensis (Vietnamese ginseng), Panax japonicas (Japanese ginseng), and Panax notoginseng (Pseudoginseng). Both Panax and Eleutherococcus species belong to the Araliaceae family.
Traditionally, ginseng is regarded as both a physical and mental restorant. It is said to improve the cognitive ability of patients, improve the quality of life and behavior. Ginsenoides and other constituents in ginseng possess immunosuppressive properties.
Ashwagandha:
Ashwagandha is the Ayurveda name of the Withania somnifera herb found in the Indian sub-continent. It belongs to the Solanaceae family. It is also called Indian ginseng.
It possesses a wide spectrum of pharmacological properties, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antistress, antitumor, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and many more for treatment biological approaches.
In addition to this, it reduced the level of reactive oxygen species, modulated mitochondrial function, regulated apoptosis, and enhanced endothelial function. It was documented in research to treat various clinical conditions related to the nervous system (John Dar et al., 2012).

Does mind training help in disease prevention?
As we begin to understand the key causes of disease, it is becoming clear that there is a strong linkage between the mind and good health. Based on my research on natural solutions, I believe training the mind to enable us to stay calm and composed will go a long way in preventing many of the major diseases. The top killers in the world of today are cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. All are now classified as lifestyle diseases.
Mind training is achieved with the help of meditation. Let me present some scientific studies that support the role of meditation in diabetes and cancer patients. While the studies summarized below are specific to these two diseases, the thrust of meditation lies in stress reduction and disease prevention.
A one-month practice of meditation on people with diabetes shows a reduction in HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin) values and arterial pressure of individuals. All major psychological parameters like depression, anxiety, and general psychological distress decreased by 43%, 37%, and 35%, respectively. (Rosenzweig, S. et al., 2007; Whitebird, R.R., et al., 2009)
Sixty adult patients who had an HbA1c value between 6.0 and 8.0 were subjected to an Ayurvedic diet, meditation training instruction, and given an Ayurvedic herb supplement. HbA1c values in these patients dropped. (Elder, C. et al., 2006)
There have been reviews of studies investigating the impact of meditation on cancer patients. The reviews showed consistent benefits in improved psychological functioning, reduced stress symptoms, enhanced feeling of well-being (Ott et al., 2006). A meaningful change was observed in cancer patients given meditation sessions (Foley et al., 2010).
Another randomized controlled trial to study the impact of a transcendental meditation program on stage II to stage IV breast cancer patients showed significant improvements in overall quality of life and reduced stress (Nidich et al., 2009). Suppressive effects on tumor progression were observed on prostate cancer patients who practiced Buddhist Zen meditation (Yu et al., 2003).
Young breast cancer patients subjected to meditation sessions showed reduced stress and lowered depression and inflammatory activity levels. These patients were subjected to a 6-week meditation program (Bower et al., 2015).
Will disease completely go away by practicing meditation, I do not know, but it sure will help. You will feel good about yourself and will be able to handle the challenges of life better.

Does Piper longum (common name pippali) possess antidiabetic properties?
There are two species of pepper-producing plants. The more popular pepper comes from Piper nigrum. This pepper is available in four variants: black, white, green, and red. Piper longum is the other species that, at one time, was the most prized peppers in Ancient Rome. This demand has now been largely replaced by chilly. In India, Piper longum—also called pippali in trade—is an ingredient of the Indian curry masala (garam masala).
In Ayurveda, black pepper is a healing spice. It is often used along with long pepper and ginger. A combination said to have cleansing and antioxidant properties. Pepper is a bioavailability enhancer.
A study conducted on mice shows spasmodic (cholinergic) and anti-spasmodic effects, like loperamide and nifedipine. Pepper and piperine may possess properties to treat gastrointestinal motility disorders (Mehmood et al., 2010).
Neither Piper longum and Piper nigrum are listed as herbs with anti-diabetic properties in major herbal medicine literature. These plants are also not ingredients of the commonly available Ayurvedic formulations for diabetes.
Plants are known to possess a wide-ranging of medicinal properties, and there may be mention of the use of Piper longum as an antidiabetic herb. There is, though, no scientific support that I have been able to discover during the course of my research on medicinal plants.
