Are successful entrepreneurs risk takers? Why or why not?

Successful entrepreneurs and successful people are determined, never say die, individuals. Having studied businesses for some time now, I have also noticed that they are customer-centric. Money is not what drives them. It is developing the right product for the identified market segment that they are focused upon. They are also not punters who would take unnecessary risks.
Let us take the example of Elon Musk’s venture, Space X. Musk’s dream is to build a colony on Mars. He dreams of another world where humans will build another home. To many, this may appear to be rash, unrealistic. Look at the way he is going about achieving his goal.
He builds a rocket that is reusable and can take human payloads to planetary vehicles. Reusable rockets will bring costs of space travel down dramatically. He has already achieved this dream. Space X is the supplier for NASA to service the International Space Station. In the course of building this technology, Musk came close to bankruptcy. He continued on his chosen path despite these and other technical challenges.
Some would regard Musk as a risk-taker. But take a look at all his ventures so far, from Space X to Tesla down to Neuralink. They are all driven by passion. Look closer, and you will find an exceptional thinker, a cautious and calculated individual. He knows by instinct what businesses to get into and works towards making them successful.
Bezos of Amazon is another such individual. No, sir, these entrepreneurs are not risk-takers. They are extremely level-headed people.

Foods for cancer patients

Foods are known to build and maintain a strong and healthy immune system. Foods such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cantaloupe, squashes, and tomatoes are rich in carotenoids converted to Vitamin A by the body.
Bananas, baked potatoes, chickpeas, certain types of fish (e.g., tuna), and lean chicken are rich in Vitamin B6. Citrus fruits, strawberries, guava, leafy vegetables, bell peppers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, and spinach are a source of Vitamin C.
Cereals, milk, and fatty fish have high levels of Vitamin D. At the same time, almonds, broccoli, hazelnuts, spinach, and sunflower seeds are rich in Vitamin E. Beans, peas, and leafy green vegetables are rich in folic acid. In contrast, poultry, seafood, beans, broccoli, and kale are good sources of iron.
Selenium is found in barley, broccoli, garlic, sardines, tuna, and zinc in chickpeas, baked beans, lean meat, poultry, yogurt, and crabs. Vitamins and minerals are critical to building the immune system, which helps the body fight infections and disease.
The demand for energy in cancer patients is particularly high. Cancer patients lose a lot of weight due to the loss of muscle and stored body fat. Patients must choose foods that are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat. These are found in vegetable oils (such as olive, peanut, canola, safflower, sunflower, corn, flaxseed) and seafood.
Saturated fats are to be avoided. These can raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Foods to avoid include meat, poultry, milk, cheese, butter, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and palm oil. Trans-fat-containing foods such as margarine, hydrogenated vegetable oils, and animal products are not recommended. Trans fats increase the bad cholesterol and lower the good cholesterol.
Carbohydrates meet the immediate need for energy. The best source of carbohydrates are fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These also contain vitamins, fiber, and phytonutrients. Foods containing insoluble fiber are highly recommended. These help in easy stool evacuation, a problem often faced by cancer patients.

Is obesity genetic or a result of lifestyle?

Obesity, according to the Obesity Medicine Association, is not a personal choice. It is a complex interplay of genetics, environment, and other factors.

The Obesity Medicine Association regards obesity as a medical disease that occurs when a person’s body accumulates and stores excessive body fat amounts. Genetic factors that include thousands of different genes contribute to 40 to 70 percent of obesity.

But as is the case in most genetic-related ailments, the possession of such genes only predisposes the individual towards the emergence of that ailment; it is not a definitive outcome of these genes.

Epigenetics is responsible for the increased susceptibility of an individual to obesity. External exposures during critical development periods can alter the profile of epigenetic marks and result in obesity. (Herrera et al., 2011)

There are critical periods in people’s lives when there is an increased risk for the onset of obesity. These periods are the prenatal stage, at ages 5 to 6 years, called the age of adiposity rebound and adolescence. (Dietz, 1994)

Prevention of obesity starts in childhood. Lower birth weight seems to be associated with a later risk for central obesity. It confers increased cardiovascular risk, which is probably occurring through changes in the hormone systems. (Oken et al., 2003)

Pregnancy and the immediate period post childhood are also periods when mothers are likely to become obese. Post-childbirth lifestyle behavior has an impact on weight gain. Spending extended periods watching television leaves little time for mothers to walk, leading to weight gain. (Oken et al., 2007)

Data for the BMI of Americans between the ages of 50 to 60 years shows a gradual increase, while a decline in body weight and BMI takes place in the age group between 70 years and 80 years. (IOM, 1995)

Several studies have noted that body fat increases with age, and muscle loss occurs, even after controlling body weight changes and physical activity. (Baumgartner et al., 1995) Skeletal body mass declines from the 3rd decade of life onwards. (Dutta et al., 1995) The rates of decline are higher in women after menopause. (Aloia et al., 1991)

What is the average life expectancy with type 2 diabetes diagnosed at age 53 with normal lifestyle/regular walk and diet?

Type2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease. The disease tends to progress over time. If not managed and checked, it has been found to reduce life expectancy more so in women than in men. Franco et al., 2007

The disease has been seen to be reversible too. Human clinical trials have shown that a low-fat vegan diet appeared to improve glycemia and plasma lipids more than did conventional diabetes diet recommendations. (Barnard et al.,2009)

Here is a summary of natural solutions options that have been found to make a difference in scientific studies:

A systematic review of articles and studies on the health impact of Yoga shows that its’ practice helps in weight control, reduction of blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood sugar. (Yang, K., 2007; Youngwanichsetha, S. et al., 2014)

Yoga mudra (sitting with one finger of the hand touching the thumb) and Shalabasana (locust pose) adversely affected people with diabetes and worsened their diabetes status. It is an interesting observation and indicates that the nature of exercise is also vital in diabetes management. Individually Dhanurasana (Bow pose) was found to most effective in diabetes control. Yoga was useful for people with diabetes of all ages. (Sahay, B.K., 2007)

A review of published scientific papers between 1979 and 2009 notes that acupuncture treatment reverses metabolic disorders such as enhanced blood sugar levels, inflammation, obesity, and other effects contributing to building insulin resistance. (Liang, F et al., 2010) Acupuncture and moxibustion, individually or together, were observed to be effective therapy for diabetes. (Liao, H., et al., 2007)

After a detailed scientific review, I have been able to identify four plants – Gymnema sylvestre, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Eugenia jambolana, and Curcuma longa that has the most substantial scientific support for their anti-diabetic properties.

A review of herbs used in TCM shows that Atractylodes macrocephala, Codonopsis pilosula, Dioscorea opposita, Flos lonicerae, and Pueraria lobata retard the progression of diabetes by reducing blood glucose level.

The above-listed options are based on theoretical study and analysis. It is best to consult your physician before applying these solutions.

Which Bible passage says God gives us all plants and herbs on Earth?

The Bible is not just a book of faith. The writing of the Old Testament is said to have commenced around 1200 BC. The New Testament writing took place in the 1st century AD. Trees, herbs, and nature were integral to life and times during that period. Let me share some of the verses that I found to be relevant to plants and herbs.
“The trees that are fed and nourished by the water that flows from the sanctuary have nourishing and healing properties. And by the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all [kinds of] trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing” (Ezekiel 47:12).
Hebrews 6:7 “For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God;” demonstrates the value that society placed on vegetation.
The Book of Jubilee 10:12–13 states, “As we explained to Noah all the medicines of their diseases, together with their seductions, how he might heal them with herbs of the earth. And Noah wrote down all things in a book as we instructed him concerning every kind of medicine. Thus the evil spirits were precluded from (hurting) the sons of Noah.”
Sirach 38:4–5 and 7–8 state, “The Lord created medicines out of the earth, and the sensible will not despise them. Was not water made sweet with a tree in order that its power might be known? … By them, the physician heals and takes away pain; the pharmacist makes a mixture from them.”

Medicinal uses of cardamom spice

There are two varieties of cardamom. Large or big cardamom and a small pod variety—green cardamom. Big cardamom is called black cardamom, Bengal cardamom, or Siamese cardamom and belongs to the Amomum genus. The smaller variety is from the Elettaria genus. Both Amomum and Elettaria genus belongs to the same Zingiberaceae family. Ginger is another popular spice that belongs to this family.

Besides India, cardamom is grown as a commercial crop in Guatemala. On a smaller scale, cardamom is also cultivated in Tanzania, Sri Lanka, El Salvador, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Honduras, and Papua & New Guinea.

Small cardamom (Elleteria sps) was observed to reduce blood pressure in stage 1 hypertensive individuals. It also helps reduce blood clot formation and raises the antioxidant levels in the body (Verma et al. l, 2009). Cardamom extract was seen to inhibit human platelet aggregation (Suneetha et al., 2005). Verma et al. (2010) found Amomum subulatum to be a cardio-adaptogen against physical stress.

It is a diuretic with sedative action (Gilani et al., 2008). They believe that lower blood pressure is due to the diuretic and sedative properties of the species. The antioxidant effect of the bark and black cardamom seed was also observed in an experiment conducted on rats fed on a high-fat diet (Dhuley, 1999). The antioxidant property of cardamom was observed to vary with variety (Amma et al., 2010).

The anti-convulsant and sedative property of an Ayurvedic formulation Unmadnashak Ghrita has Elletaria cardamomum, Gardenia gummifera, Ferula narthex, Bacopa monneri, and cow’s clarified butter, was observed in an experiment conducted on mice (Achliya et al., 2004).

In Ayurveda, cardamom is widely used for relief in digestion-related ailments. In India, green cardamom is used to treat infections in the teeth and gums. The spice is also used to prevent and treat throat troubles, get relief from congestion of the lungs and pulmonary tuberculosis, and reduce inflammation of eyelids. It is also reportedly used as an antidote against both snake and scorpion venom.

How can I prevent or reverse Type 2 diabetes?

Diabetes manifests itself when insulin produced in the body cannot adequately metabolize the sugar in the blood, causing blood sugar levels to spike. 90 percent of all diabetes falls in the Type 2 category. We will focus on Type 2 diabetes here.

The inability of available insulin to fully break available blood sugar into energy leads to a rise in blood sugar levels.

Another reason is that the conversion process itself has become retarded. The cells of the body have become resistant to the available insulin. As a consequence, blood sugar levels rise. The medical name for such a condition is insulin resistance.

There are multiple causes of insulin resistance. Hepatitis C virus infection in the liver is one reported cause. (Petit et al., 2001) The pancreas themselves have become calcified and are unable to produce enough insulin is another reason. (Malka et al., 2000). There are other causes of insulin resistance.

Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease. In many cases, it can be prevented. In others, reversal of diabetes is seen through lifestyle modification.

Yoga and standard physical training exercises both have a positive impact on individuals who have diabetes. It helps reduce oxidative stress and bring about improvements in antioxidant profiles. (Gordon, L.A., et al., 2008)

Diabetic individuals who performed pranayama felt a sense of well-being in 7 to 10 days of practice. Demand for insulin, other diabetes control medicine dropped. In this trial, four types of pranayama were practiced for 30 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of resting yoga posture called Shavasana (a dead person pose posture). (Sahay, B.K., 2007)

In addition to breathing exercises, eight forms of physical activities – (Yoga asana)- have been observed to benefit diabetic patients. These exercises were practiced each day for 45 minutes, followed by relaxation exercises like Shavasana (Deadman pose) and Makrasana (Crocodile pose).

The Yoga asana practiced were Dhanurasana (Bow Pose), Ardha matsayendrasana (half spinal twist) helped control diabetes optimally. Halasana (plow pose), Vajrasana (sitting posture with feet under your hips, Bhujangasana (Cobra pose), Naukasana (boat pose) were effective.

Dr. Neal Barnard, associate professor of medicine at George Washington School of Medicine, recommends a vegan diet to people with diabetes. According to him, a vegan diet can even reverse diabetes. (Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes published his book in 2007)

The diet recommendations of Dr. Neal Barnard are more in consonance with the current day thinking, which claims that the link between the gut, diet, and lifestyle diseases like diabetes is intimate. Effective restoration of gut microbiota, reversal, and repairing gut microbiota to good health is possible through dietary changes.

Prevention and reversal of Type 2 diabetes is a widely studied subject. The above is just a preview.

How is digital transformation helping businesses thrive and grow exponentially?

All businesses, including technology companies, need to reinvent and reimagine themselves periodically. However, the process and pace of reinvention and reimagining are dictated by the market and internal to the company ecosystem.
The process when digitally powered is digital transformation. Business processes are automated to improve efficiency. Sometimes the automation process is supported with re-organization and business strategy redefinition. When that is done, it will be best described as business transformation.
Often technology consulting firms present themselves as experts in digital transformation. They are often experts in deploying automation tools. However, digital transformation is far beyond that.
A transformation process needs to be aligned to the business model of a company. Apple, for instance, is a technology firm and a product company. The focus is on products. Therefore, its digital transformation strategy is product-focused. It relies on acquisition as a tool for inducting new technology into the Apple ecosystem and re-tooling these for product development.
Walmart, another giant company, is resorting to traditional digital transformation. It is investing huge sums in business process automation. The competition from Amazon has given a boost to its efforts.
Think where your company is in its business journey, the challenges it faces, and then initiate the transformation process.

Will walking 7 miles a day help me lose weight?

Obesity is a complex disease. It appears as a polygenic condition. It is affected by environmental factors (mainly unbalanced dietary patterns and physical inactivity). Epigenetics is responsible for the increased susceptibility of an individual to obesity. External exposures during critical development periods can alter the profile of epigenetic marks and result in obesity. (Herrera et al., 2011)

It is vital to understand the relationship between epigenetics, nutrition, and obesity. Once we understand these, we will come to a scientific solution for bringing about weight loss.

It is the choices of food that we make that determine if obesity will set in or not. Energy intake must be kept in deficit to the energy expenditure to bring about weight loss. Walking will result in energy consumption, but there has to be an energy deficit to bring about weight loss. Walking or any other exercise alone will not bring about weight loss.

Losing weight is best achieved when we proceed systematically. Check with your physician before consulting a weight loss dietitian or a physical trainer. The physician will order a series of medical assessments to evaluate medical causes for weight gain and identify the triggers leading to weight gain.

Once the clinical factors or weight gain have been analyzed and understood, should you move to the next steps, like picking up a diet or an exercise regime

The next steps could include sitting with your dietitian and picking a diet regime that culturally and individually is comfortable for you. You will stick to a diet regime only if you do not find it a burden. The choice of exercise too should be individual specific. If you enjoy walking, resistance training, or any other exercise, pick that one. Enjoy the journey, and you will achieve fighting this disease.

Remember, obesity is a complex disease; you need expert help to treat it like you do when tackling any other ailment.

Are there any references to cancer in the Bible?

Commentators on the Bible list out 21, others 27 verses that they believe refer to cancer and healing.
I think the closest reference to cancer can be seen in Isaiah 38:21 – “For Isaiah had said, Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it for a plaister upon the boil, and he shall recover.”
Healing during Biblical times would have followed the practices of the Ancient Egyptians and the Greeks. Egypt was probably the leader in medicine in the 2nd and the 1st millennium BC when the Bible verses were first enunciated.
Egyptian texts contain many references to herbs, including frankincense, myrrh, cedar, balsam, pine, myrtle, benzoin, labdanum, mastic, juniper berry, cardamom, and calamus. Many of these herbs were ingredients in Kyphi (known as Kapet in ancient Egypt), an antiseptic, perfumed substance used extensively in ancient Egyptian temples and the homes of the rich. Papyrus Harris, written during the reign of Rameses IV (c. 1155– 1149 BC),
The oldest papyrus, the Ebers papyrus, dates back to 1550 BC. The Ebers papyrus discusses medicinal herbs used by ancient Egyptian doctors dating back to 3400 BC. It mentions opium, cannabis, myrrh, frankincense, fennel, cassia, senna, thyme, henna, juniper, aloe, linseed, and castor oil. Like castor and juniper, many were locally available; others were imported from Africa and Asia (e.g., mandrake, cedar oil, henna, aloe, and frankincense).
The Greeks and Romans translated the Egyptian texts into their languages. Over the centuries, Greek and Roman texts became the basis of Arabic and European medical texts.
The Bible is not just a book of faith but has immense historical value. It is our window of the life and times that existed for probably close to 1800 years of the human history of Mesopotamia, Judea, Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
