Need for investors to undertake ESG analysis before deciding to make an investment
Climate change is a reality. Twenty percent of the global businesses are directly getting impacted by global warming. The balance eighty percent are being affected by association.
Consumers are demanding businesses to adopt climate-friendly practices. Smart companies understand this customer trend and are adapting their business strategies to be climate-friendly.
Future-ready businesses will prevent getting disrupted.
Investors look for alpha. Alpha will come from future-ready businesses. Analyzing ESG strategies and policies of a company sits at the center of future readiness. Smart long-term investors are beginning to understand this trend. They look at the business strategy, business model, and business operations of a company.
As an investor, you need to invest in businesses that are preparing themselves for these trends. For instance, look for the current energy mix and plans to move to low carbon or no-carbon energy sources.
ESG policy analysis should be an integral part of all investment strategies.

Does curcumin help prevent the Covid 19 infection?
Several scientific reviews have been conducted to examine if curcumin could help prevent and even treat the novel coronavirus – covid 19. I have picked a couple of these for your consideration.
Curcumin, a natural polyphenolic compound, could be a potential treatment option for patients with coronavirus disease. This review shows that curcumin as an antiviral and anti-inflammatory agent can be helpful for both the prevention and treatment of new emerging coronavirus. However, well-designed clinical trials are needed to demonstrate the potential efficacy of curcumin against SARS-CoV-2 infection and its ensuing complications. (Zahedipour, F. et al., 2020)
Another review presents several lines of evidence, which suggest curcumin as a promising prophylactic, therapeutic candidate for COVID-19. First, curcumin exerts antiviral activity against many types of enveloped viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, by multiple mechanisms: direct interaction with viral membrane proteins; disruption of the viral envelope; inhibition of viral proteases; induce host antiviral responses. Second, curcumin protects from lethal pneumonia and ARDS via targeting NF-κB, inflammasome, IL-6 trans signal, and HMGB1 pathways. Third, curcumin is safe and well-tolerated in both healthy and diseased human subjects. In conclusion, accumulated evidence indicates that curcumin may be a potential prophylactic therapeutic for COVID-19 in clinics and public health settings. ( Thimmulappa, R.K., et al., 2021)
Turmeric, the spice that is the curcumin molecule’s natural source, is water-soluble and contains oxalates. It thins the blood and so is contraindicated with aspirin and warfarin. It is placed in the “generally recognized as safe” category of food additives by the FDA.

Are health illnesses and genetics mostly to blame or obesity?
Three factors are externally responsible for obesity, and these, when managed, can help in obesity control. These are:
Nutrition: Certain foods, such as refined carbohydrates and unsaturated fats, contribute the most to obesity
Medicine: Certain prescription medicine, including anti-depressants, steroids, contraceptives, medications for diabetes, hypertension, migraines, seizures, bipolar disorder, allergies, insomnia, and a host of others, are associated with weight gain.
Sleep: Disrupted sleep; sleep less than 7 hours or more than 9 hours can lead to obesity. Difficulty in breathing can also be a reason for disturbed sleep.
Obesity, according to the Obesity Medicine Association, is not a personal choice. It is a complex interplay of genetics, environment, and other factors. The magnitude of this disorder’s impact on health can be understood when we realize that obesity impacts 236 diseases, of which 13 are cancers. (Obesity Medicine Association).
Obesity was first recognized as a disease in 1948 by the WHO.
Some genetic mutations are known to trigger obesity directly. But as is the case in most genetic-related ailments, possessing such genes only predisposes the individual towards the emergence of that ailment; it is not a definitive outcome of these genes.
Several studies have noted that body fat increases with age, and muscle loss occurs, even after controlling for body weight changes and physical activity. (Baumgartner et al., 1995) Skeletal body mass declines from the 3rd decade of life onwards. (Dutta et al., 1995) The rates of decline are higher in women after menopause. (Aloia et al., 1991)
Obesity, to summarize, is a complex disease. It is caused by multiple factors and is responsible for various disorders.

How can I predict the future of my company?
Unlike astrology, predicting the future of the company can be done with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Let me give a broad overview of such an exercise.
Using business strategy tools, find out where the company is positioned vis a vis its competitors. The analysis will tell you if your company has scope for further improvement of operational efficiency.
The analysis should also tell you if your activities are easily replicable by competitors. If that is so, then the likelihood of your losing customers to competitors is very high. Over time, your company will lose out.
Look at the future positioning of the company to your competitors. There are tools available that can help you undertake this exercise. You will also be able to see if your company is likely to be disrupted by new technology or in any other manner by a competitor.
Analyses mentioned above should review the activities and the organization structure, leadership, business processes, balance sheets, sales and revenues, profits, and regulatory risks.
If the analysis identifies that your company is likely to get disrupted in the future, take immediate steps to reverse the damage-causing trends.
Use a certified expert to undertake this analysis and work closely with these individuals so that you can provide critical company-specific inputs to the experts.

Aegle marmelos – common name bel – an ancient sacred tree
The mid-sized wood apple tree (botanical name Aegle marmelos) is of immense religious significance to Hindus. Leaves and fruit are offered in worship to Shiva, one of the gods of the Hindu Trinity. Hindus believe that Shiva resides in the Bael tree. The trifoliate leaves of the species are said to represent the three eyes of Shiva.
The tree is mentioned in Yajur Veda. Varahamihira (505-587 AD), the ancient mathematician and author, mentions Aegle marmelos in his encyclopedic work, Brihat Samhita.
The species finds a mention in ancient Buddhist texts too. The tree is part of a fertility ritual in Nepal. Young girls, in devotion to God Shiva, tie a thread around the Bael tree, consummating a cosmic marriage with the Lord.
The juice from the leaves helps remove foul odor from the body when applied before taking a wash. Ancient literature has documented the medicinal properties of the leaves, bark, and roots. These benefit patients with gastroenterological ailments.
Research studies have shown the effectiveness of the plant against 21 disease-causing bacteria and fungi that include Staphylococcus sps, Salmonella sps, Bacillus sps, Aspergillus sps, Klebsiella sps, etc. (Pandey et al., 2011).

Does garlic raise HDL levels?
My research on garlic’s medicinal properties, on the other hand, shows a contrary picture. Let me summarize the evidence as I have noted:
The plant is effective in reducing high blood pressure, showing promise in reducing cardiovascular risk (Ackermann et al., 2001).
Garlic is useful in alleviating atherosclerosis (Berthold et al., 1998).
Borelli et al. (2007) performed a study that reveals adverse interactions of garlic with certain drugs. Isoniazid is used to treat tuberculosis and in birth control pills. The cyclosporine is given after an organ transplant. Blood-thinning medications could all be made less effective when patients take garlic supplements.
Dried garlic preparations (in doses as low as 600 mg per day) or as fresh, high allicin-yielding garlic (10–20 g per day) appear significantly to reduce total serum cholesterol over 1–3 months. (Silagy, C.,’ et al., 1994) The scientists further note that the reduction of HDL, though, was very slight.
Garlic is extensively used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is now extensively used as an OTC supplement in many parts of the world.

What if your favorite tea could also be an immunity booster?
Let me give you some scientific facts on tea. The information will enable you to appreciate the health benefits of this herb popular in many parts of the world.
There are two popular varieties of this plant Camellia sinensis var assamica and Camellia sinensis var sinensis.
The most well-known chemical constituent of tea is caffeine, which is stimulating in nature. Caffeine in tea is approximately 4 percent in dry weight. Tannin is the other principal constituent of tea.
Caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline are polyphenols belonging to the phenolic group of compounds. These chemical compounds help defend the plant against insects and pests. Theobromine and theophylline are responsible for the bitterness of the tea.
Theanine in green tea plays a role in reducing stress. Oxidized catechins (theaflavins in black tea) are said to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood.
Tea decreases lipid and carbohydrate absorption, increases lipid metabolism, inhibits de novo metabolic production of fat, and increases carbohydrate utilization. (Grove et al., 2010) Green tea intake is associated with increased weight loss due to diet-induced heat generation attributed to the catechin epigallocatechin gallate. (Shixian et al., 2006)
High caffeine intake was associated with weight loss through heat and fat oxidation and suppressed leptin in women. (Leptin is a molecule that triggers a signal of satiation to the brain).
In summary, tea may not be an immunity booster but has many medicinal properties.

What keeps a business on a sustained growth path?
A business grows faster on the back of sound business strategies. Growth will occur when:
a) A business can maintain a sustained competitive edge over its competitors
b) It recognizes customers’ needs, responds to them, and keeps repeating this cycle over and over again.
c) It pre-empts customer requirements and pro-actively meets them.
d) It can build trust with their customers
You will see that many fast-growing businesses like Airbnb, Tesla, for instance, have put in place the right strategies. These have enabled them to grow at a fast pace.
There are many businesses, especially the new-age businesses, that are growing fast but are not profitable. It is many times a function of strategic choice made by the company. The sustained growth that the enterprise is achieving indicates that it has the right business strategy in place.
Profitability comes when a sustained cost reduction supports customers’ willingness to pay for its goods and services. The gap between willingness to pay, price, and cost has to be created to generate profits.
Business strategies are complex and must be understood and appreciated for companies to leverage their power for sustained growth and profitability.

What can be a profitable business that I can start in Greenland?
Profit accrues a business when customers’ willingness to pay for goods or services on offer is more than its costs.
The above statement prima facie may appear simplistic, but achieving the above-stated general objective is easier said than done.
It all begins with an entrepreneur’s understanding of the key demand drivers in a jurisdiction – in this case, it is Greenland. Begin by asking yourself the following questions?
What can be made in Greenland at a competitive price point?
What and where is the demand for goods and services? Is the need available inside the jurisdiction or outside?
What are the regulatory drivers and bottlenecks in this jurisdiction?
Can the selected goods and services be produced locally?
Will I need to depend on an external workforce to implement the idea?
What is the availability and reliability of this external or internal workforce?
What is the state of competition for the identified goods or services?
How easy is it for a potential competitor to copy and replicate your business idea?
Are the competitors located within Greenland or located overseas?
What are the unique selling points of your business idea?
Will the idea resolve a customer pain point?
What is the future sustainability of the business idea?
Answers to these questions will give you a starting point. Once you have the answers, field test the idea. You will gain some insights into the practical challenges during the field testing stage.
All this done, you are ready for a business rollout.

Preventing cancer and improving quality of life
I have looked at cancer healing from natural solutions when researching for my book on the subject. Let me briefly summarise what I learned on cancer prevention and cancer care.
Cancer prevention:
Vitamins B and D and calcium found in plant and other foods have cancer-preventive properties. Dietary fiber found in whole grain, seeds, legumes, pulses, vegetables, fruit, and products made from these helps in the easy evacuation of stool. Plant-based phytochemical-rich foods help regulate hormones such as estrogen, slow cancer cell growth, and block inflammation.
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, related vegetables, lycopene found in tomato products, pink grapefruit, watermelon, and apricots protect several types of cancers.
Dietary phytochemicals act as modulators of cellular signals that trigger proteins that make cells turn cancerous (Lee et al., 2001). In both preclinical animal models and human studies, dietary phytochemicals were cancer-preventive (Lee et al., 2013).
Turmeric (curcumin), red chili (capsaicin), cloves (eugenol), ginger (zerumbone), fennel (anethole), kokum (gambogic acid), fenugreek (diosgenin), black cumin (thymoquinone) contain chemicals that prevent cancer (Aggarwal et al., 2008).
Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables reduce cancer risk in organs such as colorectum, lung, prostate, and breast. This protection is attributed to the high amount of glucosinolates molecules found in such vegetables (Abdull et al., 2013).
Improving the quality of life:
Meditation, yoga, tai chi are some of the exercise forms that have been extensively studied. These improve the quality of life of cancer patients.
