Tap, Tap, Tap ‘Til Halloween Comes – Preview/Excerpt

Preview or excerpt of Tap, Tap, Tap ‘Til Halloween Comes, Book 1 in the Masters of Halloween series

Excerpt:

Glug, glug, glug.

What is that sound? Larry thought sleepily with his eyes still shut.

Drip, drip, drip.

Is it the faucet again?

Tap, tap, tap…

Oh, gods. Not that again. Larry turned towards the wall, his hand outstretched, searching nervously for the light switch. His hand came in contact with something elastic and squishy.

What the heck?

Larry squeaked as he bolted upright in his bed. He couldn’t see a thing, so he switched on the bedside lamp―

―and dearly wished that he hadn’t.

Covering the walls and the ceiling was some kind of gelatinous goop. It pulsed and writhed like it was alive. Thick pustules and throbbing veins could be seen here and there.

And in some places, there were eyes. Round demonic eyes watched Larry and tracked his every movement.

Slimy ropes of some viscous fluid dripped down from a huge slit of a mouth from the ceiling. That explained the glugs and the drips.

But where was the tapping coming from?

Larry looked around in unbridled fear. This was like being trapped in a living, breathing nightmare. It felt as if he had been swallowed whole by a humongous monster and Larry had become a resident of its stomach.

At least there isn’t any acid.

Larry fled towards the door. The demonic eyes followed his movements but showed no signs of stopping him. Just as Larry was within arm’s reach of the miraculously goop-free door, he tripped on something and fell flat on his face.

Cradling his bruised nose, Larry looked back to see what had tripped him.

Was it a…horn? Or a tooth? Larry couldn’t say for sure, but seeing the pale bone slowly and steadily extend towards him, Larry made haste and rushed for the door.

As soon as Larry escaped the haunted bedroom and slammed the door shut behind him, there were several thumps and screeches, as if something were scratching at the door in an effort to get to him.

Sound of quivering jelly-like flesh had Larry whipping his head up.

Sunken half into the ceiling was…a thing. It looked how a person might look if the skin were completely peeled. Muscles and tendons clinging to pale whitish bone, organs visible behind the ribcage and hanging down due to a lack of sufficient support to keep them in. Seemingly boneless arms and legs hung limply from their sockets, dangling and waving ever so slightly. The part of the skull where the eye sockets and the forehead should have been was taken over by a huge eye.

And it constantly quivered, making the sound that Larry had heard. The eye shivered and swiveled, constantly rotating as if frantically looking for something.

It made Larry want to puke.

What is this? What is all this? Where are these things coming from? Why, oh gods, why me?!

Larry’s mind looped in terror and a desperate attempt to retain what little sanity remained. His thoughts had long turned to mush.

I’m going insane, Larry thought frantically. Things like this simply should not exist.

Tap, tap, tap…

Something was tapping ever so patiently on the dining table.

Another monster?

But no, it was just a cat―a black one―sitting calmly on the table and tapping its claws on the polished surface.

What?

“Henry, you’re scaring the human. If you don’t cease then he will be of no more use. It will upset the master greatly,” the cat told the nightmare stuck on the ceiling in a bored and displeased tone. It sounded very much like a normal English gentleman. It freaked Larry out even more.

“I can’t help it if my very existence scares him, sir,” the nightmare called Henry said helplessly in a cockney accent. “Short of not existing, I don’t know what I can do.”

Then cease existing,” the cat hissed softly under its breath, then aloud to Larry, “Mister Larson, my master, the Fourth Prince, grants you the honor of an invitation to dine with him at Halloween at the Green Park. You shall not decline.”
