Honey Honey
The alley reminded me of darker days
As the cigarette embers scattered on the pavement below,
Near the downtown house in that part of the city
I used to call home.
I had re-entered the lion’s den
Where my red-head woman was with another man,
It was something I couldn’t avoid forever, but
Later would’ve been all right.
She introduced me to the outstretched hand,
As I looked at her instead and said,
“Baby, I expect nothing less from you.”
She asked about the love of my life
I said, “That wasn’t love,
And I’ve moved on with time.
That was just something to get me by while I hung around.”
Although somewhere inside me an urge re-surfaced.
I fought it. Suppressed it.
Put it back where it belonged.
Honey, honey
My days aren’t that long.
I walked to the basement,
Down the stairs,
Where the band on stage was raising hell,
With a guitar and a banjo and a woman and
Damn, how she could sing the blues.
Every man fell for that lady that night,
As she sang about that Big Man in the sky
I said, “Thanks for the show, baby.
I’ll catch you the next time around.”
Now when I walk the streets
I eye the crowd.
No familiar face stands out.
All I want is to see her one more time.
Honey, honey
No one knows what’s meant to be.
All we can do is
Keep on living.
