Proud to Be A Keating

The past week and a half the Keating family, my family, has celebrated the life of Charles H. Keating IV, a United States Navy SEAL who was killed in action on May 3, 2016, while fighting alongside the Peshmerga in northern Iraq. On that day a son, a husband, a brother, a grandchild, a nephew, a cousin, a friend, a Navy SEAL, was lost to the world. After hearing what happened on May 3, what actually happened from the people who were with Charlie at his final moments, I learned that he died with a smile on his face, and that doesn't surprise me at all. That is the type of person Charlie was.
The outpouring of support, love, compassion, and condolences from the community and the public has been amazing. I am grateful for everyone who has reached out, and I am especially grateful to my family.
I have heard many times, "This type of thing doesn't happen to us, -to our family." Unfortunately our family is the exact people this happens to, and that's a hard truth to face. But we will face it, as we have in the past, because when the Keating family is hit with adversity, death, slander, or any other struggle we always come together and come out stronger on the other side. The reason:
The Keating family is a family of warriors. A family of survivors. A family that takes life's greatest challenges head on and in the end triumphs. The world keeps trying to beat us down, but we keep beating right back.
Charlie embodied that warrior in our family. He took on Evil, stared it right in the eye, and with that smile on his face he conquered the enemy. He was a true hero long before the events of May 3, 2016, but no one would have known because he was also humble, respectful, brave, strong, loving, and a little goofy, to be honest. Charlie had courage, honor, and dignity. He was an all around incredible human being who inspired and impacted the life of every person he met. Now that the world knows he is a hero, my hope is that they will never forget, because I know we won't.
It has always been instilled in us to take pride in our family name. Keating. That is not hard to do when the traits I used to describe Charlie can also be used to describe the Keating family as a whole. I have always been, am, and always will be proud to be a Keating.
Members of the Keating family have represented this country on a world stage, been teachers to children internationally, fought in foreign theaters of war, and now sacrificed life for the United States of America. No matter how many times the media has tried to degrade us, tried to slander our family name, even in the midst of this recent tragedy, we have always stood strong and stayed together. The Keating family has a bond that cannot be broken by even the most difficult of times, and that is not something every family can say. It should be no surprise by now why I am proud to be a Keating.
Although we may have lost one of our own, we gained an in-law and an extended family of SEALs that not only Charlie, but also Billy, had/have become a part of. The woman Charlie married has stayed strong through everything, with a smile on her face, just as Charlie would have wanted. Billy has been a rock that shows our family will never falter. And the toughest men in the world lent the women in our family a shoulder to cry on while making the men feel accepted as brothers of their own. These brave people, good people, have been more supportive than I could have ever imagined. I am proud to have them in my family.
So here's to my family. You're tough as nails. You are all heroes to me. You have been there for me through he hardest times and supported me in all my goals. I am extremely grateful to call you my family. I am extremely proud to be a Keating. There will forever be a void we cannot fill. There will always be a soul missing amongst us. But we have a bond that will never be broken, and we will always carry on the memory, the legacy, and the spirit of Charlie. We will survive this difficult time, and with each other we will come out stronger. I love you all. God Bless ya, Charlie/Charles/Chuck/CIV. God Bless ya, Keating's. And God Bless ya, America.
