She’s Leaving Me
She’s leaving me, and it’s my own fault.
My daughter wants to be an actress. “Acting is hard,” I told her. “You’ll have rejections, and critics, and people constantly telling you you aren’t good enough.”
“But I can deal with that,” she said. “I’ve watched you deal with it with your writing, and you always come out on top.”
She really wants this and I’ve been the example that they can have what they want if they’re willing to work hard enough. She wants this like she wants air. She wants it like I w

Josi Kilpack Rocks! That’s Why!
My husband has always wanted me to write a mystery novel. I mean ALWAYS. He’s even bought me all kinds of “how to” books on writing mysteries. I’ve got books on weapons, poisons, motives–the works. It is a huge disappointment to him that I haven’t cracked the spine of one of those how-to books. But the next best thing to ME writing one is my best friend writing one, isn’t it?
I think so.
Josi is so incredibly busy planning writing conferences, and doing book stuff that I decided to forego the usu

Who Knew?
What’s on the mp3 player: Eve 6 Inside Out
Last week , some weird things took place.
I received an email Tuesday asking me for the full manuscript on a query I sent out. I sent the query as an afterthought since I was sending it with another book the agent had asked for the full manuscript on. And hindsight tells me I sent that query prematurely being that the book wasn’t done, but I thought the agent would take longer in getting back to me.
She was fast.
And the book still wasn’t done.
And I panic

High School Never Ends
Stephen King says that anyone who looks back on the ages between 14-18 with any enjoyment has something really wrong with them. I am inclined to agree.
I now have my own teenager and I watch her maneuver through girl world and girl fights, and boys you secretly love who will never know your name, and I think, “I am so sorry you have to go through this!” There are rivalries, jealousies, broken hearts, hurt feelings, real fear of failing, socially suicidal situations, and angst. They couple the wo

LTUE 2009
Sorry about the lack of internet presence recently. I’ve been in the mad throes of editing and writing and at the end of the day had nothing left over for blogging. (although I was well behaved and maintained a few posts over at writing on the wall)
I was only gone four days during the LTUE time period. One given over to eBay for a training where I feel more ignorant now than before the training, and three given over to the Life, the Universe and Everything science fiction and fantasy symposium a

Whitney Finalists Announced!
It’s that time of year again! Time for the Whitney Awards!! Last year was simply fabulous. The evening of the awards ceremony was a delight to be part of. I hope everyone can make it to the banquet this year. If not, we’ll hopefully have live blogging for the event like we did last year.
Rob Wells is the mastermind behind the awards, realizing that LDS authors have a lot to offer the reading community.

My Fair Godmother–Review
You read that right; Chrissy, the godmother, didn’t pay much attention to studies at school which is why she graduated as just a fair, rather than a fairy godmother. Janette Rallison has written one of the best turn-a-fairy-tale-on-its-head books ever.
Writing humor is truly hard to do. Janette is a flawless comedian while weaving a story about characters you love, root for, and feel panicked for when their situations of facing down a cyclops, dragon, and evil stepmothers who wander around at ba

The Many Faces of Mom
A few weeks ago, my cousin put a picture her daughter drew of her on her blog. The picture was this happy smiling face of mom, with a heart and a dialogue bubble that read, “I love my child” or something like that. It was fairly adorable. The Sunday just before seeing this picture on my cousin’s blog, my children had also drawn pictures of me. They weren’t exactly like the one my cousin’s child drew of her.
See for yourself:
And then there’s this one:

My darling son and I had a little war over thi

Keep Moving Forward
My teenage daughter surprised me a few months ago. She went home from our store (where we rent dvd’s too) with a few movies: Juno, Sidney White, and Meet The Robinsons.
I had nothing pressing to do and knew that Juno had some pretty grown up themes and figured I ought to watch it with her in case she had any questions. We ended up pulling an all day movie fest watching all three movies. I hadn’t seen any of them and it was fun to hang out with her and watch movies until our eyes got sore. (loved

Resolutions, hearts, and other things we break
On New Years Eve a fabulous, amazing, incredible, I-can’t-believe-this-came-to-my-inbox email popped up in my Outlook. It was an email from the editor at Harpercollins. I’d sent her a query letter and the first three chapters of The Hazzardous Universe. She said she wanted to read the rest of my manuscript.
I know!
Did you hear it? The heavens are open and those angels are not only singing, they are totally breakdancing! I love it when those angels get all excited about stuff.
How seriously cool
