Book review: Rhett C. Bruno – Vicarious (@RCBruno44)

In Rhett C. Bruno Vicarious, Mission’s start in life had been anything but easy, squirrelled away, hidden from the rest of the ship, she was forced to live in isolation but for the babies and the woman who risked her very life to keep the sins of Mission’s parents a secret. Resources were precious, every breath accounted for. The balance was delicate, a set number of lives able to be sustained. Mission should not have been, but there she was, hidden. Until that fateful day where there came a choice between discovery and death. High Earth watched with bated breath, but none more so than Asher, the man who would come to direct the show that she, and many others didn’t even know they were a part of. The world of digital entertainment was everything, but how far would he be willing to go to ensure his star keeps bringing in the ratings when all he really wants to do is save her?
Okay, how the heck am I only finding this author now? Rhett C. Bruno’s, Vicarious, is right up my alley, it has everything I could possibly want in a book and so much more. There is such depth to the world building and characters you can’t help but be drawn into the intertwined existences of Asher and Mission. As a love child of the Truman show, the Island, and Ready Player One, it combines the aspect of VR and reality TV in an entertaining and pulse raising way, forcing the reader to invest in the characters and not just view them as characters on a page, but as three dimensional, unique personalities complete with flaws, motivations, and drive. Action, chaos, twists, turns and hairpin bends, you’re not going to want to put this down. So plug in, to your audiobook, and prepare yourself for an epic adventure like no other.
I’m only just starting my journey into audio books, until recently I was flooded with childhood memories of poor narration and monotone reading, but not here, wow, this was some amazing stuff. I loved the narration, the voices fit the characters and the atmosphere perfectly. The narrators, Wil Wheaton and Katherine McNamara, really step into the role to make this an unforgettable experience, bringing the book and characters to life so vividly that it’s impossible not to visualise them right there beside you. The quality of the narration is nothing shy of perfect, drawing you in and capturing you from the onset. A brilliant portrayal of an excellent book which, I must confess, I have purchased to read so I can have the whole experience from the perspective of a reader as well.

Book review: Scion of Lightning – J.T. Moy

In J.T. Moy’s, Scion of Lightning, Jaks was a failure. With his conscript coming to an end he hoped to follow in his big sister’s footsteps, to be something, be someone. But he was useless, detested, worthless. Even his own father had disowned him, although perhaps that had more to do with the fact the man was monster more than Jaks’ failings. When a comet fell from the sky and he stood watch over a young woman he thought he’d finally do something worthwhile, only they were more interested in labelling her a spy than the truth and leaving him to failure and embarrassment. He vows to find her, but first he needs to get his own affairs in order. He all but failed his conscript and not a person wants him. A penniless beggar seems to be the fate awaiting him, until Fate deals him a surprising hand. Yet little does he know fate is also pulling him towards something else, something that effects the fate of all.
The world building in J.T. Moy’s, Scion of Lightning, is rich and vibrant, as a reader you are pulled into a world of strife and magic. Lands are at odds with each other, unaware of the threats that encroach from places they would least expect it, and unaware of the true nature of those once seen as heroes. I enjoyed the fullness of the world, from the rich descriptions of places that made me feel I was there, beside the characters, to the small touches and rich world building that give insight into the justice system, views, and lifestyle of those in this land. The characters are unique, I loved how Jaks is flawed, not the archetypal cookie-cutter character, but a fearful boy with a trouble past working hard against adversity, bullying, and his own mental blocks. A gripping and involved read, with real sense of dread and looming danger that you won’t want to put down and will leave you wanting the next book. Action, danger, relationships, and mystery, this book has it all wrapped in the perfect fantasy package, and on a side note, I have to confess I really loved the old school fantasy book cover. It really adds to the charm of a perfectly presented fantasy.

Book review: Obsessed – Ivy Smoak (@IvySmoakAuthor)

James had come to Delaware for a new start. Left behind the city that had almost killed him and the people who didn’t care. It was meant to be a new beginning, something simpler, easier. And it was. For the first time in his life he was choosing something for him. but when fate thrust a young red head in his path he had no time to prepare for the effect she would have on him. This woman had turned his world upside down, was everything he could want and nothing he deserved. His past had scarred him, haunted and influenced every thought, every decision. He had too many secrets, too much doubt, but there is one thing he is certain of, her wants her, no matter the obstacles in his path, which is why he must also do everything he can to keep her away. Then again, maybe having her just once would be enough. I mean, what could it hurt?
Obsessed by Ivy Smoak is James’ Point of view of Temptation, the first book in the Hunted Series. It’s no secret that I adore this author’s work but she has honestly never failed to capture my attention and draw me into her world and characters. Obsessed was everything it needed to be, intense, emotional, engaging, and hot as sin, and sin is exactly what’s on James’ mind as he pursues his student. There has always been so much passion and chemistry between James and Penny but reading this from his side, holy hell. I loved filling in the blanks. I’ve only ever read one other series which had an alternative view from the other main characters perspective, and I have to say, this surpassed it in every way imaginable. I love James’ tortured soul, and can’t wait for more answers as we fill in more of James’ side. Ivy never fails to leave the readers on the edge of their seat, and while this book has only just been released, I’m already craving the next.

Book review: The Holy Truth – Abdulilah Hamadi
It all started with the death of a professor. A fatal neurotoxin discovered in his blood hinted murder. But there was more afoot, and David Lipton finds himself thrust headfirst into a world he had no idea existed when research for his next story leads to secrets people would literally kill for. The last thing he expected when he purchased the documents was to be drawn into a plot straight from one of his books. What he thought was an innocent and exciting find could become the very thing of nightmares. Can he get to the bottom of this mystery, or will he be joining the dead left in the wake of the secret society who will go to any length to ensure order? Find out in Abdulilah Hamadi’s The Holy Truth.

The Holy Truth by Abdulilah Hamadi is a cross between religious and crime fiction. The author does a brilliant job in explaining the ins and outs of the secrets society ensuring the antagonists drive and motivations are clear from the very start. Rich in history of this society the reader is given insider knowledge of the workings and drives, making us fear more for our protagonists, who accidently stumbled into a world he had no concept of and dangers unforetold. They say curiosity killed the cat, and it certainly holds true here with hitmen on his tail for what he thought was just another puzzle to be solved and story to be written David really has his hands full. I can clearly see how much research had gone into this book to make everything viable from the use of a little known drug, to the in depth structure of the secret society and its influence. The Holy Truth is not short of action, nor the weighted pendulum of doom as David tries to stay one step ahead of those who would see him murdered.
I listened to the Holy Truth on Audiobook narrated by Mathew Welding and Carol Carpenter. It has been some time since I last had time to sit back and enjoy an audiobook. I have to say I really enjoyed this, the quality of the audio is brilliant. I loved the addition of atmospheric noises and dual narration which really helped you hear the difference between the characters. I enjoyed how the narration was filled with the emotions and tension that mirrored the plot. Without a doubt the narrator of this book has rekindled my interest in audiobooks.

Book review: Not Right Now – K Thomas (@SenlisHasWings)

In K Thomas’, Not Right Now, Senlis was a Nephilim, it was normal for her to be beyond empathic, she absorbed emotions and energy from people, but she couldn’t control it, nor could she remember the past that should have come to her so easily. In her dreams, or sometimes even when awake, visions of the past haunt her, centering around Johan, someone she hopes is long gone from their lives. Add these factors to the art of trying to balance Benny and Hunter as they clash, and she really doesn’t know if she’s coming or going. So when something happens and an opportunity it to change things presents itself, what choice is there but to be pulled along for the ride, hoping to right a wrong and hopefully find answers.
Not Right Now is the second book in K Thomas’ Time to Wake series, Having not read the first book in the series, I was a little concerned I would lose key elements, especially at the beginning, but as the chapters progress the author does a good job in bringing the readers up to speed to the point everything that’s occurring is understandable despite us having missing pinnacle events in the first book. I enjoyed the character development, the scenes between Sen and Hunter were brilliantly written to portray the unfolding of their relationship, heat and sweetness along with uncertainty, barriers, and doubts all factor in to this, especially given that Hunter has thousands of years worth of memories of his time spent beside Sen, memories she lacks. With great characters and a unique plot, it will have you hooked in no time. Packed with action and adventure, with a sprinkling of magic, romance and a generous dash of paranormal, this book combines all my favourite elements in a gripping and enjoyable way that not only has me wanting to read the first book, but waiting for the next in the series, I mean with an ending like that, how could I not what to know what comes next?

Book review: The Society #StalkerProblems by Ivy Smoak (@IvySmoakAuthor)

Ash had really struck the booby prize when it came to marriage. Thank goodness that was behind her now, even if it had left her penniless with a dating disaster under her belt that made her want to embrace the life of a hermit. She had nothing, nothing that is, but Tuesday and Thursdays. For a few minutes on those two days she could forget it all as her stalker locks eyes with her, and for one moment she can pretend she isn’t a walking disaster, a menace to manhood everywhere. When a black envelope appears inviting her to an exclusive sex club on the night of her divorce party it seems like all fun and games … this is a world where wishes are granted and all she had to do is sign on the dotted line and her wildest fantasies are hers for the taking … and maybe, just maybe, her stalker will be too.
The Society #StalkerProblems by Ivy Smoak may just be my new favourite book. This book is literally everything. Funny, steamy, troubled, and mysterious you’ll seriously be hooked from the go. There was only thing that frustrated me and that was the fact I couldn’t get a few hours to myself to sit and read it without being interrupted. It was so freaking amazing that even when I was forced to put it down, it wouldn’t leave my thoughts. Ash is an amazing character and from now on, my oh too common incidents are now called doing an Ash, I’m not even kidding I’ve used it at least twice already. She is probably one of the best characters I’ve ever read, she’s neurotic, hysterical, and sexy, her internal monologue is amazing, and her character comes complete with a rich background story and amazing growth through the plot. I mean, wow, it must have taken so much to write such an engaging and vibrant character. I loved the complexities of this book, the cameo appearances, the cringe worthy moments, and the victories. And don’t even get me started on Tanner. I need to know everything. Hotter and more hysterical than Matthew Caldwell’s flaming … well I won’t finish that reference, but those who know, know, and if you don’t, find out. If you only read one book, get this one.

Book review: Fury – Tracy Lorraine (@Tracy_L_Author)

Ruby had met her step brother only once before, and he turned her world upside down. He hated her, destroyed her, only not in the way he had intended. Since that Halloween night, she had never been the same, he was under her skin, in her mind, unforgettable, but worse still, he was coming back. He hated her, hated that her mother had married his father leaving him and his mother to suffer while she got everything. When Ashton loses everyone he needs someone to blame, and who better than the ‘cheer-slut’ who ruined his life. If he has to live in hell, the least he can do is drag her down with him.
Fury is the sixth book in Tracy Lorraine’s Rosewood High series. This is yet another amazing addition to the bully romance saga as Ashton returns, dragging the fires of hell with him, ensuring that as he burns she does too. I loved the push pull, the hatred and surrender in this book as the two grow close, neither wanting to accept there could be something more than using and hatred to what they have. An emotional read with emotions laid bare and some amazing scene setting. Steamy, captivating, and intense. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Book review – Hunter -Tracy Lorraine (@Tracy_L_Author)

From the moment their lips met in the close Hunter knew he was feeling things he shouldn’t for his sister’s best friend. He’d fantasised about that moment forever, but as they stepped out, he broke her heart. When a second chance came at new year he had no idea what he was about to discover. Poppy had been hiding a secret for years, a dangerous, escalating secret that seemed destined to end only one way. Her life has been crumbling, beyond the sight of onlookers. She is worn, tired, and if Preston has his way, she’ll be broken beyond repair. She can’t tell anyone, but she can make one choice, before he takes everything from her, she could seek comfort from the one man she’d never forgotten. The one who broke her heart time and time again.
Hunter is the fifth book in Tracy Lorraine’s Rosewood High Series. I swear, these books just keep getting better. Hunter and Poppy’s story was intense, dark, and filled with suspense as you’re drawn into Poppy’s life. Uncomfortable and wrong, everything she has been hiding, and her silent suffering will draw you in as you read with baited breath, fearing what could happen. I really enjoyed watching the relationship unfold between Hunter and Poppy. Intense, dark, and dramatic, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering how things will end.
Book review: Maggie Cole – Roots of Vengeance (@MaggieColeAuth)

Connor had always loved for fun. Never getting attached, partying, but when he met Gia everything changed. For the first time ever he had wanted more. This woman was everything he could ever want and more. But none of it was real. It was all a lie. And he vowed never to be hurt again. As the years pass she is the one he could never forget, and suddenly she’s back in his life with a different name, but the feelings were all too familiar, and she’s involved in something she can’t turn her back on, not even for him, but none of them realise how close their worlds pass.
Roots of Vengeance is the final book in Maggie Cole’s Together We Stand series. I really loved this series and seeing the final Brooks seeking his happy every after was one hell of an adventure, one which answers every question left unanswered by the series so far. An amazing conclusion to a fantastic series, filled with emotion, complexities, and the end of secrets. An amazing read, and I’ve already got another Maggie Cole book on my read list.
