City of Ghosts opens with Jake seeing a young woman with bandaged wrists sitting at a nearby table in a cafe.

I had a similar situation here in Vienna. I was waiting to cross the street and couldn't help but notice a young woman next to me with both wrists carefully bandaged. Now, the bandages could have come from anything, but I automatically assumed it was from a suicide attempt. Something so terrible felt completely out of place with the beautiful city around me and my mind started working on a story. What was her story? Had she really tried to kill herself? Why would someone so young and beautiful feel compelled to do such a thing?

The final version of City of Ghosts has little to do with suicide, but it was this young woman and her unknown story that lit the spark.(less)

If I make myself sit down and write, I can usually come up with plenty to say. The first step is making myself do it.

Generally, I'll jot down a few notes first to help get things going. I often write down a few key points the scene should hit and identify the goal of the scene. This stops me from writing a bunch of exposition only to cut it later. Of course, once I start writing things can often veer off in a new direction.(less)

Writing Goals for 2017

It’s that time of year again. A time to set goals for the new year and to look back and see how disastrously the previous year’s goals went.

First, let’s look back on what I hoped to accomplish in 2016. It…did not go well.

I hoped to write two novellas, one in the Vienna series and one in the Rocket Malone series. I didn’t do this. I still may in the future, but I later decided it wasn’t really wo
