Book review: "Born For Trouble: The Further Adventures of Hap and Leonard", by Joe R Lansdale (Tachyon Publications, 2022)

I’m a fan. Let’s have that out there from the get-go. And I don’t really do this kind of book review thing. But when I got an email from the fine folks at Tachyon Publications (hi, Kasey!) asking if I’d like a review copy of the new Joe Lansdale collection of Hap and Leonard stories, Born for Trouble, I couldn’t say no. Like I said, I’m a fan.

A story for Christmas

As is becoming kinda traditional around here, I’ve written a Christmassy short story for Crime Cymru. Featuring returning character Dan Matlock, it’s called Matlock and the Stille Nacht.

Previous years’ stories may be found here (Matlock and the Herald Angels) and here (Matlock and the Night Before).

A new Dan Matlock short story for Christmas: Matlock and the Herald Angels

Hi all

Theres a new Dan Matlock short story online at Crime Cymru for you, written in response to a request for Christmas-themed tales. Its set before the events of East of England.

This is the second Matlock story that Ive done for Crime Cymru. Last years (which is set after East of England, for those who like to fit these things together in a temporal jigsaw puzzle style), can be found here.

Hope you enjoy them both, and that you have a good break/holiday/festive season! Its been a strange...

Blog post over at Crime Cymru

There’s a blog post by me that’s fresh up over at Crime Cymru. It’s an updated version of one from 2015, and involves me going on about the perfect writing machine, by which I mean a mild addiction to keyboards and related writing devices. It’s a subject I’ll be returning to in a few weeks …

Canine Jubilee crowdfunding shutdown

I've taken the decision to shut down the crowdfunding effort forCanine Jubilee. It'sclear that this isn't a viable way to publish the book, so I've asked Unbound to close this down.

That'll mean that they'll contact you to confirm this if you've been one of those who've supported the book - and huge thanks if you did! - and they'll give you details on what that means.

As I understand it, your Unbound account will be credited with the value of your pledge, which you can then put to other...

Matlock and the Night Before: a short story for Christmas

The Welsh-based crime writing collective Crime Cymru (for writers who either are Welsh, are living and working in Wales, who set their stories in Wales, or any combination of the above), are currently running a series of Christmas-themed short stories from their cohort of authors. As I’m a member of that particular gang, being located physically in Wales these days, I’ve been asked to contribute.

And so I have. Here’s some free Yuletide noir for you.

Matlock and the Night Before features Dan...

New interview, from Tom Leins' Dirty Books blog

Hi all

I’ve been interviewed by Tom Leins for his excellent Dirty Books crime and noir fiction blog. You can find the interview here.

Also, Tom’s been good enough to review East of England also.

I’ll be back soon with updates on the second Dan Matlock story Piece of Work, and on the status of the currently-crowdfunding Canine Jubilee, which’ll be the third book in sequence.

Thanks!

A second Crime Cymru blog post, and other bits and bobs

Full disclosure: this is a rewrite of the original posting, as I - fool of a Took that I am - managed to close the browser without saving the first version. Ah, well.

First things first. There’s a new blog post by me over at Crime Cymru; the post discusses using Welsh locations in fiction a little, and includes a tiny bit of a tease about a forthcoming Dan Matlock book following on from East of England.

Second, the crowdfunding for an East of England sequel - Canine Jubilee - continues over a...

Crime Cymru blog post: Canine Jubilee: crowdfunding and what it entails for the crime writer

I’ve contributed a blog post on the website for the Welsh crime writers’ collective Crime Cymru. The post talks through crowdfunding from a writer’s perspective. The post’s here.

Naturally, there’s mention of both East of England and its now-crowdfunding sequel Canine Jubilee!
