Shards of Moonlight,

Halo of Flame

Whispering Secrets

The Night Won’t Name,

Incantations of Memory

That Entreat and Claim.

Shards of Moonlight,

Silence Singing Loud,

Beguiling the Hush

With a Mystical Cloud,

#Halloween #FlashFiction – Grave Choice

.

Weariness overcame me. Darkness spiraled up from the pit of my stomach, engulfing me, pulling me under, surrounding me. I struggled against it, trying to breath in the suffocating murk, but, like a hypnotic spell, I could not resist the tugging blackness encroaching on my thoughts. Sleep leapt upon me, like a tigress with claws bared, sinking them into my flesh, penetrating deeply, inescapable.

Quiet. Blackness. Sinking. Strange sensations scathed over me. Heaviness. Lightness. Breaking through. Crashing in. Calm tranquility mixed with ethereal panic that left me searching the dimness frantically, but for what I did not know. Light? Breath? Heartbeat?

All was silent. All was Dim.

Fear crashed in on me; a thousand boulders tumbling on my body from out of the dingy night sticking to me, pounding over me without mercy and without ceasing, yet I did not fall. There was no pain, only fear devouring me in the darkness. Echoes of thought whispered from the ebon vastness around me; voices once so bright, filled with life, now empty, hollow, soundless.

What happened to the life that was inside me? Where did my vibrancy go? Try as I might, I could not draw a single breath and the sensation of existing without it was terrifying. Brackish water sloshed around my feet, pouring in from the edges of the darkness, splashing upwards in a slow, inescapable progression; yet my feet felt nailed to the place where I stood. Unable to run, I searched the emptiness around me, horrified to watch the slogging water sucking upward around me, encasing me in icy coldness.

Where was the Light? Wasn’t there a Tunnel of Light? What happened to all the preaching and teaching and reaching from Heaven? Shadows began to move in the deep darkness, slinking towards me in a haze that filled me with dread. Sounds like ravenous animals gnawing bones began to filter through to me. Screeches and cackles more horrendous in sound than any tale from the crypt I had ever heard. Insidious laughter mocked my struggles as I fought to escape the unrelenting icy embalmment closing around me.

Then all went silent as a single voice spoke from the darkness staining itself crimson over my head. I listened, aghast at the familiarity of the tone and inflection. It was my own voice. It was me, speaking out of the past to haunt my own soul and as I listened, bitter tears slipped down my pallid cheeks, falling into the freezing water encircling my chest, my neck, sloshing upward over my chin, my nose, consuming me.

“I have everything I could ever want or need. I’ve got more money than I know what to do with, more influence than I know how to use, and more friends than I can count. ……………

What do I need God for?”

Lord the Lord your God………

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  I’m sure that today isn’t the first day that you’ve heard that statement, that sentence.

It appears multiple times in scripture, it appears in song.  What does it mean to love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, your mind and all your strength?  What does that look like?

We are still in Matthew’s Gospel, the disdained tax collector that went from exploiting Jewish people to trying to save them.  At this point in Matthew’s account, we are in the last week of Christ’s life.  He had made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

He was spending his last week in or near the holy temple.  Three prominent groups in Israel at that time, the Herodians I talked about last week, the Sadducees and the Pharisees were taking turns questioning Christ in an effort to trap him in front of large crowds that had gathered for the Passover.

Today’s scripture occurs at the end of a long day for Christ.  He had been teaching and preaching, he had given the parable of the wedding banquet, talked about paying taxes and spoken about the resurrection.

Christ had silenced the Sadducees, they were a conservative group that only accepted the Law of Moses.  Much less is known about the Sadducees as compared to the Pharisees.

The Pharisees, this religious group mentioned often in the bible, heard that the Sadducees had tapped out and they decide it is time for one more go around.

They offer up one of their best and brightest, a lawyer to question Christ.  An expert on religious custom and law up against a man with no formal training or education.

“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” the lawyer asked.  Christ’s response can be found in the Old Testament in the book of Deuteronomy, it was his response to the devil during the temptation.

It is part of Jewish daily prayer called the Shema.  Christ’s response points to what our whole lives and being should be about.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  This is the greatest and first commandment.  And a second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Considering all his exchanges with these religions and political groups it would be easy to come to the conclusion that he was anti-Jewish or anti-establishment.  That is not the case.

Christ is an orthodox Jew, he believed in the law.  But he didn’t come to this world to beat people up with rules, he came to fulfill the law, to fulfill the Old Testament prophecies that a promised one was coming.  The promise of the Messiah that would take away the sins of the world.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

How do we love our God and neighbors like that?  Do we do love them like we should…………..How do we do those things?

Reading scripture, writing a sermon.  Those things are expected from a pastor.  What I often times run into doing those things is I get exposed.  Studying the scripture gives me time to reflect on the message I am to deliver and makes me question whether I do those things.

I tell my wife and children that I love them often, but does my behavior match the words that come from my mouth.  To be kind, not always.

If I love or when I love, it is in a broken, incomplete manner in which I do.  Too prone to get mad, too prone to lose my patience and lash out.  Sometimes, it appears that the only thing I love is my own selfish interests.

That is a window into my twisted, broken mind.  I can say that I believe that I have been obedient to God’s call, have tried to follow the best that I know how and devote time to him in prayer, read his word and give to the church.

But, do I put him first in my life?  Do I love both him and my neighbors with all my heart, all my soul and all my mind and strength…..

We moved into the neighborhood about 3.5 years ago, I have neighbors in that area that I haven’t had a conversation with.  Haven’t taken the time to get to know them.

I will try to spare you anymore of my hang-ups and give you an example of what this kind of love looks like.

Corrie ten Boom, that was her name, a young girl born to a very devout Dutch family.  She lived with her family in Holland during World War II.  She and her family bravely hid Jewish people that had fled their homes.

She offered up herself for God’s people, in anyway, any place at any time.  Scores of Jews passed through the ten Boom home.  Her selfless ways continued until the Gestapo found out and placed her and her family in one of their concentration camps.

The horrible treatment she received did not stop her from sharing her faith or leading worship services.  She would lose her father, a brother and a dear sister.

Just a few short years after the war ended, Corrie ten Boom was speaking at a church in Germany.  At the end of the service walked an older gentlemen that was one of the most vicious guards at the concentration camp she was held in.

“A fine message he said, as you say, all of our sins are at the bottom of the sea,” as he extended his hand.  Could you imagine her angst, anxiety, anger, all the things that she must have felt.

He told her he had become a Christian and asked for her forgiveness.  “I forgive you my brother, with all my heart.”  She would later say that she had never known God’s love so intensely as she did then…..

We are called to love the Lord our God.  We are called to be faithful.  We are not called to be rich, but if we are we should be generous with that bounty.  We are not called to spend more time on our phones than with our God.

We are not called to be convenient or cavalier Christians.  We are called to love.  When our love seems broken, imperfect, clumsy and incomplete.  We are called to love.

When we are exhausted, tired, emotionally spent and in a genuinely bad mood, we are called to love.  When devastating and unexplained news of loss, grief and illness come our way, we are called to love.

When people have a different opinion from us, do things we don’t approve of and don’t look like us, we are called to love them.  Respect them, treat them with the dignity that every human being has the right too.

I will grant you that love is something of an emotion, it can be.  I would contend that love is an action.  Love gets kids up, fed and off to school and is there for them.  Love looks after those that aren’t able to take care of themselves.

Love is an action.  Love requires sacrifice.  I don’t think you can love someone or something that you don’t spend any time with.  The same is truth for our God.  The more you understand God, the more spiritual you become, the greater you should be able to love.

In The Lime Light – #AuthorInterview with E.C. Hibbs

.

Please allow me to introduce fellow author E.C. Hibbs.  E.C. is the author of several novels, including the Tragic Silence series and MIPA Nominated YA fantasy Blindsighted Wanderer, and co-author of the award-winning charity anthology Dare to Shine. She also writes under the non-fiction pseudonym Charlotte E. Burgess, producing books on meditation and New Age subjects.

As an artist, she works in a variety of mediums such as graphite, acrylic paint, papercutting, and digital photomanipulation. She  holds a BSc (Hons) in Animal Behaviour and a Postgraduate Diploma in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Chester.

Besides writing, she reads obsessively, her favourite genres being the classics and all kinds of fantasy. She enjoys Disney and horror films, practising Shotokan karate, archery, hiking up mountains, and playing with her very cheeky cat Millie-Moo. She also models for the UK Alternative Fashion Fest in aid of local charities and S.O.P.H.I.E., and is an avid supporter of WWF.

She resides in Cheshire, North-West England, where she co-owns the family business Earthkin alongside her mother.

.

Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?

I used to run a traditional blog on my website, but I’ve recently moved over to YouTube because I find it more interesting to talk about topics to the camera. I tend to speak about writing tips for authors, which I often break down into five steps. I also cover my favourites from across the creative world, my thoughts on certain topics, and the occasional tag for fun. You can find me at www.youtube.com/echibbs

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?

It’s usually my readers and watchers getting in touch to tell me what areas of writing they are struggling with – I try to structure my posts around genuine problems, and it helps me to give back to everyone who enjoys my books and content. And sometimes an idea will just pop up out of the blue! I never really know!

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

I want to show my fellow authors that while writing can have its problems, there is always a way to solve them and create the book you want. All you need is patience, determination, and a sense of humour!

Tell us about your book(s):

I would class my books as all falling in the Young Adult fantasy range, but no two are ever the same. I’ve written medieval fantasies, paranormal thrillers, gothic stories, and more – each one dealing with different age groups, themes and locations. I suppose the thing which links them all is that they are all very character-driven. I really feel that characters must be believable, whether they’re protagonists or antagonists, for a story to work. So all of mine have layers to them and I spend a lot of time working out their psychologies, to make sure they are as real as possible.

What Inspired you to write your book?

I’m often influenced by myths and legends from around the world, but for The Sailorman’s Daughters, I didn’t need to look too far. It’s inspired by a story from Cornwall called The Mermaid of Zennor, combined with a few other maritime folktales and myths. It’s a common theme that sailors are seduced by mermaids, who then wreck their ships. But I thought, what if one sailor came home to his family on the land, but also had another child: a mermaid child? From that, the book was born.

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason?

I prefer third-person because I feel better equipped to move between characters and get a multitude of angles on a story. But I wrote first-person for the Tragic Silence series, and I didn’t mind it at all. I suppose I’ll just use whichever POV best suits the story in question!

How would you describe your “Voice” or Style of writing?

I’ve been told that my style is quite lyrical, and I would agree with that. Growing up I read a lot of classic literature and I think the old way of writing has rubbed off on me. I like creating prose that lets the mind wander a little, and ties in with the world and characters.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?

I’m a bit of both, but I only let each kind of writing take centre stage at certain times. I spend a lot of time preparing for a book – it’s often longer than what I’ll spend actually writing. I do a ton of research and character development and then write the bare bones of the story in a walkthrough. I use that to figure out where the chapters need to be, find any plot holes before the real work begins, and then allow it to be like a guiding hand so I don’t wander too far off track. But with that done, when I actually write the story, I can really explore and go deep without worrying too much, because I’ve made myself an anchor with all the preparation work. I think it’s best to try and walk the line between both.

.

If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?

I’m a 26 year-old animal lover, Disney freak, and chocoholic. I’m also what you’d probably get if Wednesday Addams, Alice in Wonderland and Tinker Bell were thrown together.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?

I’m also an artist, so I love drawing, painting and paper-cutting – all my artwork can be found on my website alongside my books. I also use paper-cutting for my family business Earthkin, which I run along with my mother – we sell handmade figurines and silhouette jars as well as jewelry and clothing. In the activity department, I enjoy archery, karate, and hiking.

Describe Your Dream Getaway Destination.  Have you ever been there?  What makes this place Irresistible to you?

Without question, Finland. It might seem like a strange one to pick, but I absolutely adore being up in the Arctic, driving a husky sled and sitting under the Northern Lights. I go there as often as I can.

What “Charity” or “Cause” do you feel passionately about & Why?

I’ve supported WWF ever since I can remember, and especially since I studied animals and wildlife at university. Another one I’m really passionate about is The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a UK charity which aims to stamp out prejudice, hatred and intolerance. I actually organized and co-authored an anthology on their behalf called Dare to Shine, which was released last year.

Thank You so much E. C. for sharing your time and talent with BnV

In The Lime Light – #AuthorInterview with #Fantasy #Author T.J. Green

.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Fantasy Author T J Green about her book and writing.  T J Green was born in England, but moved to New Zealand 10 years ago. She currently lives near Wellington with her partner and her cats Sacha and Leia. When not writing she does lots of reading, gardening and yoga.

In a previous life she’s been a singer in a band, and has done some acting with a theatre company – both of which were lots of fun. On occasions she and a few friends make short films, which begs the question, where are the book trailers? Coming soon…

Tom’s Inheritance is T J Green’s first book, the sequel is called Twice Born, and was released in February 2017. She is now working on book 3, and also a few short stories which further expand the world of Tom in the Other.

Other projects include a book set in the real world – whatever that is – but there will be unusual things happening.

**** Bonus***  Tom’s Inheritance is available for free through Bookfunnel !!! – The Fey, the Lady of the Lake, and a summons to wake King Arthur

Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?

My blog is http://www.tjgreen.nz and primarily it’s a website about my writing and current projects. I talk about my characters, and background info that has influenced my books. I also read lots, so I review books of all kinds under the Reading Room. I host the occasional guest blog too.

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?

All sorts of things. I’m drawn to mysteries, fantasy and myths, and love the way that we all tell stories about our everyday life.

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

No particular message, but I hope whatever I post is interesting and informative.

How has your blog helped you as a writer/Indie Author? What things have you learned along the way that you never anticipated?

I’ve found I have more to write about than I thought I would – I wasn’t particularly keen on having a website initially, but knew I needed one. I’ve found I really enjoy it. I also love reading, so writing book reviews and helping out fellow indie authors seemed a natural progression – although not all the book I review are indie- published.

Writing a blog regularly is good writing discipline too.

Tell us about your book(s):

I have two books published at the moment, and I’m writing the third. They’re all part of an Arthurian Fantasy series. Tom’s Inheritance, the first book, is about a boy called Tom who goes looking for his missing grandfather and ends up in the Other. He finds he’s been summoned by the Lady of the Lake to wake King Arthur from his long sleep on Avalon. It’s a reboot of the Arthurian legends, set in the Other. There’s some old Arthurian characters and lots of new ones!

Twice Born is the second book, and it’s a mystery and adventure. Tom and King Arthur look for Nimue, a missing witch, and find out Merlin is involved. And there’s dragons too!

Book three – tentatively titled Galatine’s Curse, is all about Tom’s sword and it’s very strange history, which plunges them into another adventure.

What Inspired you to write your book?

I wrote a short story – which you can get if you subscribe to my newsletter – and from that the story developed. I always wanted to write a modern fairy tale, and it just evolved.

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason?

I like close third person point of view, I find it gives me more freedom in writing. First person is too restrictive, but I’m sure at some point it will be a POV I’ll use.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?

Mystery, fantasy, adventure, magical realism, but I enjoy writing non-fiction too.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?

I’m really a discovery writer. I start out with a loose idea and go from there. At some point I have to plot, but the act of writing helps it unfold.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite character? And Why?

My favourite character is probably Beansprout – Tom’s cousin – she’s feisty and fun, but Bloodmoon is a character in my second book, who comes back for book 3, and he’s great! There’s no least favourite – yet!

Share an insight or secret about your book(s).

Tom is the name of my 7 year old nephew – I named the lead character after him. He quite likes it!

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?

Keep writing, don’t give up. Learn how to market effectively – still working on that one! And always hire a professional editor and cover designer – unless you’re a whizz with graphics.

Would you like to share an excerpt from the book or a poem or two to give readers an idea what you offer?

Excerpt from Twice Born – Chapter Three –

They had been looking for nearly an hour, taking their time drifting through the warren of buildings, before they had any joy. Walking down the start of one of the Holloways, they saw a vast tree to their left, pressing against the bank at its back. There was a narrow cleft in its trunk, above which a small sign announced The Hollow Bole. Peering upwards through the leaves they saw small windows scattered along thick and misshapen branches. Ducking to avoid hitting their head on the low entrance, they stepped into a small hall hollowed out of the trunk and followed the narrow spiralling stairs upwards into the gloom. They emerged into a larger hall built into a broad branch overlooking the Holloway and the edge of the square. There were no straight edges anywhere. Instead, the chairs, tables and balcony were an organic swirl of living wood.

A dryad, green skinned and willowy, stepped out of the shadows and said, “Can I help you?”

Thinking they were alone, Tom jumped. Arthur remained a little more composed and said, “I’m looking for an old friend who passed through here, probably a few weeks ago now. Can you confirm if she stayed here?”

“And what do you want with this friend?” the dryad snapped.

“She hasn’t arrived where she should have, and I want to find out if anything has happened to her,” Arthur said, trying to keep the impatience out of his voice.

The dryad went silent for a moment. “It depends who it is. Her name?”

“Nimue. Our mutual friend Vivian asked me to find her. She’s worried.”

The dryad was startled. “Nimue? The witch?” She spat out “witch” viciously.

Now Arthur was startled. “Yes, Nimue, one of the priestesses of Avalon. Or witch, as you choose to call her.”

“They are all witches on Avalon,” the dryad replied disdainfully. “Yes, she stayed here for a few days. And then she left. I don’t know where,” she added, to avoid further questions.

Please tell us About YOU:   If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?

I’ll quote my twitter page, it’s a good summary – Author of Tom’s Inheritance and Twice Born – Arthurian Fantasy. Reader, blogger, book reviewer, mildly addicted shopper, gardener, cat lover, yoga obsessive.

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?

Lawrence Durrell – my favourite author ever! I’ve read all of his books, many times.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?

Reading and gardening.

Describe Your Dream Getaway Destination.  Have you ever been there?  What makes this place Irresistible to you?

I love Asia. I love the people, the markets, the weather, the food, and the shopping. Bali is a big favourite!

What “Charity” or “Cause” do you feel passionately about & Why?

I’m a big advocate for women’s rights, and to end violence against women. I also find it very disturbing that women’s access to family planning is being reduced, and that women’s choices are being eroded. Too many people think it’s acceptable – it’s not.

Of #Purpose #Destiny and Attaining #Utopia – #WritingProjects

.

I am so Blessed.  Truly!  As my writing expands into thoughtful musings, doors into other places where these musings may touch and possibly Inspire continue to open.  Is it me, working diligently to seek out other opportunities and venues?  Perhaps.  Is it the Influence of Universal Love guiding and directing the words Inspired by that same Influence?  Perhaps.  Or just possibly a combination of the two, for I do truly Believe We are Helped when we Help ourselves.

What the Harry Potter am I talking about, you might ask?  Simply this:  I have recently been accepted as a writer for Vocal.Media  a platform from which writers may share their thoughts and inspirations on a multitude of subjects.  Whether you are into gaming, meditation, music, art, poetry,SciFi, Lifehacks, pet health, pop culture, and more, you can find something new and interesting to read about.

This week they have published two of my submitted articles.

Attaining Utopia – A look at the journey writing takes between being a book and translation into a movie.

Purpose and Destiny – Me Musing about how we use the special gifts with which we are Blessed.

I hope you will enjoy these and perhaps others, should I be blessed with additional publications, AND that you may find other writers who will equally entertain and, potentially, Inspire.

Thank You Ever So!
