Rosalyn's Ring by Alina K. Field

If you've been following my posts, you know that one of my interests is the novel vs. the novella: what are the different reading experiences of the two forms, and, ultimately, how does a writer craft a good novella that isn't just a novel with fewer words.   Rosalyn's Ring won the Book Buyer's Best Novella award in 2014, which suggests it has potential. The book is historical romance, as were the last two novellas I discussed, so I figured this would be a great story to study--apples to apples.

11 by Kylie Brant

For those of you who are not Romance Writers of American members, the RITA award is the association's yearly award in new fiction. Ms. Brant's novel 11 was a 2014 finalist in the category, romance suspense. In other words, the top romance writing industy organization decided that this book was one of the year's best.   Got your attention now?   The plot: Mia escaped from sexual sadistic The Collector, but when she returned, no one believed her story—or that fact that he’d come for her. So she

Insatiable by JD Hawkins

I'm currently taking advantage of a free introductory month of Kindle Unlimited and trying all kinds of books, some better than others. The one I picked up today, Insatiable by JD Hawkins, is what would have formerly just been a longer book but is packaged as a two-part serial. It's good but not great. In fact, I wasn't really into the first couple chapters, but I kept reading anyway, so I guess that says something.   I read a lot of books, but only a fraction of them end up here on the Reading

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

If you’re wary of relationships that border on unhealthy, where the hero at times acts like a destructive stalker, then you should probably stay away from this book. People seem to either love it or hate it. But as a #1 bestseller originally published through a vanity press, the reading writer can’t help but take a look.   Abby Abernathy and her best friend America leave for college with a goal: help Abby escape from her past and make good choices about her future. Enter Travis Maddox,

Jack and Djinn by Jasinda Wilder

Miriam has had enough of her abusive veteran boyfriend Ben, but he hasn’t had enough of her. After one particularly bad beating on the street, Jack comes to the rescue and enters Miriam’s life, suggesting that she might have another chance at happiness. But when she tries to leave Ben, his aggression only gets worse—for everyone. This in itself is enough plot for most romances, but Wilder adds a few more twists to make this book unique. First, there’s the mystical djinn element and Miriam’s

Resisting the Bad Boy by Violet Duke

We're vacationing in Sweden right now, and between the time change and the midnight sun, this translates into lots of uninterrupted reading time... ideal circumstances for genre reading, mostly romance. I've long breezed through my "book books" and have move into e-book explorations. What did I do before there were e-books when we traveled to Sweden? I think I stared at the ceiling until the hour was decent, but my memory is a little foggy.   I've been exploring iBooks' feature "First in a

Sugar Daddy by Lisa Kleypas

As I wrote in my last post, I'm a Lisa Kleypas fan. However, I was hesitant to pick up her contemporary Texas series. While I think her historicals are compelling, I really wasn't very impressed by her Friday Harbor series, which I frankly found a little boring. But after reading some promising reviews, I gave it a try. I first read Blue-Eyed Devil and then Sugar Daddy (out of chronological order, but it works). And the heroes in these books definitely rival some of her best historical heroes.

Where's My Hero? by Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn and Kinley MacGregor

First of all, I generally love Lisa Kleypas's books. In fact, I have another book of hers on deck for a raving review, and she's the name that pulled me to this book when I saw it on the library shelf. But this book was... well, underwhelming. So why post it on this blog? As a reading writer, this book prompted me to think about the novella vs. the novel.   Where's My Hero is a collection of three short novellas about already established minor characters in popular books these three writers have
