Inspiration For I Wish For You

The main Idea behind my book was to write a whimsical story filled with possibilities, romance, and fun to read. I wanted to create a romantic world where wishes do come true.

I Wish for You is a Romagic Comedy with a lot of humor that I hope will make my readers dream and laugh on the journey to Happily Ever After.

As a writer, my greatest inspiration comes from within myself. While telling a story it is impossible for me not to bring to the page a part of my being, my strengths and weaknesses, hopes and fears, dreams and expectations. Then of course my creativity thrives and pulls from everything that surrounds me; being it the stories of people I know very well, like my friends and family, or those of people that I’ve never met.

For example, the story of how Ally and James met—plus/minus some details—is actually a true one, and I came across it completely unexpectedly. I was at a beauty salon chatting with the esthetician to distract myself during a painful waxing appointment. I was telling her how I had met my husband, fiancé at the time, and she told me that the previous day she had heard the most incredible story about how one of her other clients had met her husband. I liked it so much that I had to include it in my book...

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU
Camilla Isley discusses her new love.

I hate the way you look at me,
when I don’t know what to say to you.
I hate it when you keep your distance,
and when we fight.
I hate it when you’re wrong,
even more when you’re right.
I hate that you know me so well.
I hate that you’re so strong,
and that with you I have no shell.
I hate the way you boss me around.
I hate it when you wake me up early,
and when I can’t sleep at night.
I hate it when you let me down.
I hate that with you it feels like a free fall.
But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you,
not even close…
not even a little bit…
not even at all.

This poem is dedicated to the newest love in my life. I’m not talking about my husband, sorry babe, I’m talking about a different kind of love, the love that I’ve discovered for Writing.

Getting to Know – Camilla Isley

1) In your book, "I Wish for You", Ally visits a flea market, where she first notices the magical box. Have you ever been to a flea market, and if so what was your best purchase?
Yes, I love flea markets. Actually last time I went it was with my mom, it’s what gave me the idea in the first place.
She was really looking for a flower rack… Also I like to collect old, rusty keys. The weirdest the better. I use them sometimes to make place cards. You can print or write the name on the card, cut it in the shape you prefer and tie it to the key with a colored ribbon.

2) Talking about flea markets, are you any good at haggling?
I love to haggle, it’s part of the fun. Also in my previous job I was a Purchasing Manager, so negotiating really is in my blood.

3) When the box is opened, Arthur magically appears. If you could have anyone famous magically appear in your house, who would it be and why?
Well Arthur is from the past, so if I could really summon everyone to my living room I would create a writing group with Jane Austen, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Dickens, Bram Stoker, and Mark Twain.
I would also invite Cleopatra along to give us some inspiration.

4) Arthur is hundreds of years old. If you could time travel back in time, which era would you like to visit?
Since I was young I’ve always been fascinated by the Middle Ages.

One of my favorite classics is "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court" by Mark Twain, and I love to read historical fiction set in those times (The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett is another one of my favorite books).

I am sure that like many others, I am probably over-romanticizing the era. Living in the Middle Ages must have been tough. However, for fantasy-travelling it’s just perfect… there are impervious castles, valiant knights, gentle dames, and battles to fight.

Bodiam Castle, East Sussex, UK

I love a good intrigue, and when I was searching for a character that came from the past, I wanted him to be from the Middle Ages. Arthur of Brittany really disappeared mysteriously without leaving any trace. He was the perfect match for my story.

5) After visiting the past, you are taken on a journey in to the future. What futuristic gadgets would you hope had been invented?
Mmm, let me see. My first choice would be a teleportation device. Wouldn’t it be awesome to just enter inside a box in your home and be transported wherever you like in the world?

Then I would like a phone that gets charged by movement, no more battery cord.

A cleaning robot that could dust not only the floor but also furniture, clean the kitchen, bathrooms, do the laundry, and iron too.

Finally, I would like a gravity bag. A shoulder bag that you can fill to the brim, but that will always feel light as a feather. The natural evolution of this product would be in gravity luggage.

I really had fun with this answer, I love thinking about crazy stuff.

Interview with Petra at Words Have the Power

Meet Camilla Isley, the author of I Wish For You!
When I finished reading Camilla Isley debut novel, I Wish for You by Camilla Isley I invited the author for a virtual cup of Skinny Caramel Macchiato and a chat about her dream career and her idea of a perfect romantic day in Chicago. Enjoy!

Can you tell me a bit about yourself, Camilla?

I’m a mechanical engineer who would have never dreamed to become a writer. I was used to dealing with numbers and formulas, not words. But books have always been my favorite escape, I’ve always liked to invent stories, only, until now, they’d stayed hidden inside my head. It’s so great to have them finally out in the open.

Is writing books your dream profession?

It is now, but never in a million years I would have imagined this future for myself. I often joke about it with my husband, if someone five years ago had come to me and said: “Five years from now, you’d have quit your job, you’d be married, you’d be living in the United States, and you’d be writing books.” I would have thought there wasn’t a more unlikely prediction about my life, and yet, here I am…doing exactly that and loving it.

Do you prefer Tea or Coffee when you write/ read?
Coffee, coffee, coffee. I actually dislike tea to death, like really hate the taste. My favorite Starbucks drink is a Skinny Caramel Macchiato.

Have you got any favourite Romagic books?
Absolutely. Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella, it’s not exactly magic, but I’ll include a romantic ghost story in the category. Don’t You Forget About Me by Alexandra Potter, loved this one. I also enjoyed Yours Truly by Kirsty Greenwood.

What are your favourite places in Chicago?
I always tend to orbit near the downtown area, Gold Coast, Near North and sometimes Loop and Lincoln Park. I love walking up and down Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park, or visiting the free Lincoln Park Zoo. There are so many great bars and restaurants I can’t possibly name them all.

Describe your idea of a perfect romantic day and night in Chicago?
Let’s make a big assumption first by saying we’re in warm—or at least not-freezing-to-death—weather, which in Chicago can be a big if.
I would start my date with a brunch at le Café Des Architectes a contemporary French restaurant inside the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower Hotel. Their croissants are to die for, and I just love the food there. If you’re in the mood for something more American, I’d suggest The Original Pancake House in Bellevue Place. I love their pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries, but really you can find all brunch classics there. You can’t book a table and in the weekends it might get busy, but the turnaround is pretty quick and I never waited in line for long.
Then, I would walk down Michigan Avenue and just enjoy the city and the shops’ windows. I would stop at the Chicago River and take a historical boat tour; Chicago is so beautiful seen from the river. Or, if you’re more sporty, you could rent kayaks and paddle your way up and down the river. I’ve tried it and it’s fun. However, being used to kayaking in an un-trafficked lake, the Chicago River was a bit too busy, with all its boats and currents, for me to relax. (I also might have bumped into my husband’s kayak full frontal almost knocking him off in the river and risking a serious conjugal incident.)
After the river, I would take a walk in Millennium Park, see the bean, and then I’d be ready for some early pre-dinner drinks. I’d choose Pops for Champagne where you can order a glass of Champagne and some nice food to nib along.
After the brunch and the sliders I don’t think I’d have any room left for dinner…I would end the day with another walk around the block and a goodnight kiss.

What are you plotting for next year?
I have a couple of ideas buzzing in my head. I hope my next book will be a “Sliding Doors” kind of story, but I still have no idea how to write about parallel universes, so we’ll see.

Thank you Petra for hosting me...

It's Release day!

Hi everyone,
today I couldn't be more excited for the release of my new novel A Sudden Crush.

Thank you to all of you who already pre-ordered it and thanks to all the wonderful book bloggers who are helping me with the book launch.
I'm overwhelmed by your support.

Here's the synopsis if you haven't checked it out yet.

Joanna Price is a city girl with the perfect life. She loves her job as a book editor, she just married Liam, high profile bestselling author and the man of her dreams, and she’s headed to the Caribbean to enjoy two weeks of paradise for her luxurious honeymoon.
Connor Duffield is a gruff, grumpy rancher from the Midwest. He is a country boy who has a no-nonsense approach to life, more scars than he’d like to admit, and he hates city girls.

So it’s just a misfortune they have to sit next to each other for a six hour plane ride. Even more so when their flight is caught in the perfect storm and Joanna wakes up stranded on a desert island with Connor, the very man she hoped she would never have to see again.

Why are they alone on this forsaken island? What happened to Joanna’s husband?

When her dream honeymoon turns into a hilarious tropical nightmare, Joanna’s first thought is survival. However, she and Connor will quickly discover just how boring paradise can be. As the days turn to weeks, and then months, this mismatched pair will have to learn how to coexist and how to resist the sparkles of an attraction they weren’t prepared to feel.

When they are finally rescued will Joanna’s marriage be saved as well, or will the life she knew and loved be in ruins?

Rachel's Random Reads: Funday Friday - Truth or Lie?

Originally posted at Rachel's Random Reads

Play Truth or Lie on Rachel's wonderful blog. Guess the most lies and win a paperback of your choice...

...Can you tell me your name and a little bit about yourself?

Hi, I’m Camilla and I’m a Bookaholic. My passion for writing came directly from my passion for reading. I love to write books that are sweet and romantic, and that will leave readers with a dreamy smile (sometimes also some LOL moments) on their faces.

Please to meet you Camilla, I hope you will have fun today!

Now onto the show, and remember everyone, Camilla hasn't been entirely truthful with three of these answers, so it is up to you to guess which ones they are (only 3 guesses per person though).

1) Who is your favourite author?

J.K. Rowling. She created a magical world, made us speak a new language (muggles, squib, Azkaban, animagi, snitch, Quidditch …) they even had to put a 9 and ¾ platform at King Cross station. Harry Potter is my favourite series.

2) What book do you wish you had written?

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. This is one of my favourite classics. I love everything about it, the story, the struggle, the characters. Heathcliff had me fascinated since I was a teenager. I re-read this book at least once a year.

3) What was your most memorable holiday ever?

The island of Santorini in Greece. The island is beautiful, the Mediterranean Sea special, and everything just aligned to perfection during this vacation. Perfect hotel, perfect weather, and great food.

4) Please name a cocktail that would describe you perfectly, and what’s in it?

Lemon drop martini. It has Vodka, Triple Sec, lemon juice and sugar. I like to think of it as sweet (sugar rim) and sour (lemon twist). Just like everyone else I suppose, I have sweets moments and bitchy ones.

Cover Makeover

Hey, if you've followed me this past month you know it's been a bit of a roller coaster. Love Connection was not selected by Kindle Scout. In the end I was sad and relieved at the same time. All in all I'm happy to keep total creative control over my book. Bit of a control freak here.

Since I'm a writer, I don't deal with rejection by bleaching all my hair. I opted for a Cover Makeover... What do you think?

Thank you again for supporting and nominating my book... If you still want to read Love Connection before publication sign up for my Readerers' Group at this link I'll be making a super exciting announcement tomorrow... spoiler it's for free books!

Love Connection (First Comes Love, #1) by Camilla Isley Have you ever wondered what might have been?
Gemma Dawson is at the airport, staring at two plane tickets to two different cities. Two different weddings. Two possible futures. She’s at a crossroads.
Be maid of honor at her best friend’s wedding or crash her ex’s?
Gemma’s decision, unknown to her, hinges on a delayed flight and a chance meeting. Now her life is about to go down two parallel tracks—will Gemma fly toward a life with her first love or a future with a man she’s not even met yet?

Short Q&A about the book
Q. What is the inspiration for the story?
A. My hubby and I sometimes play “how else could we have met?” I find parallel lives and alternative realities fascinating, so I strove to write a romantic, fun story exploring the outcomes of two opposite choices, answering the “what might’ve been?” question to see if true love really is meant to be.
Q. What draws you to this genre?
A. I write what I enjoy reading. When it comes to romance, I particularly enjoy reading humorous stories that end in happily ever after. For me it was a natural development to write in the Romantic Comedy genre.
Q. This book is part of a series, tell us about your series.
A. Yes! The book can be read as a standalone—no cliffhangers. I decided to write a sequel as—don’t worry, it’s not a spoiler—not everyone gets a happy ending. I fell in love with the character who ends up scorned and had to write their follow up story, with no alternative realities.
