Karima Vargas Bushnell (M.A. Intercultural Relations) is an Irish-fiddle-playing multicultural Sufi Muslim and amateur world religions scholar who has distilled a lifetime of bizarre jobs and varied cultures into two metafictonal novels where fun and humor touch the most serious and precious things of all. Karima's mind connects random stuff in funny ways and follows the trails of intersecting thoughts to their unlikely conclusions. She was runner-up in Mixed Blood Theatre's "We Don't Need No Stinkin' Dramas" comedy contest, received the Student of Color Ally Award when she taught at University of St. Thomas, and always has cats. The Book of Squidly Light was an ALA selection for May, 2020.

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappé
“The orders came with a detailed description of the methods to be employed to forcibly evict the people: large-scale intimidation; laying siege to and bombarding villages and population centres; setting fire to homes, properties and goods; expulsion; demolition; and, finally, planting mines among the rubble to prevent any of the expelled inhabitants from returning.”

Ten Myths About Israel by Ilan Pappé
“Zionism offered itself as the solution to anti-Semitism, but became the main reason for its continued presence.”
Ilan Pappé
Rumi by Coleman Barks
"According to the cover, Rumi, who lived from 1207 to 1237, is a "Master of ecstatic groundedness." What I have always enjoyed about his poetry is the broad mindedness exhibited by lines such as:

D.H. Lawrence
“It's no good trying to get rid of your own aloneness. You've got to stick to it all your life. Only at times, at times, the gap will be filled in. At times! But you have to wait for the times. Accept your own aloneness and stick to it, all your life. And then accept the times when the gap is filled in, when they come. But they've got to come. You can't force them.”
D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley's Lover

Audre Lorde
“Black and Third World people are expected to educate white people as to our humanity. Women are expected to educate men. Lesbians and gay men are expected to educate the heterosexual world. The oppressors maintain their position and evade their responsibility for their own actions. There is a constant drain of energy which might be better used in redefining ourselves and devising realistic scenarios for altering the present and constructing the future.”
Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches

Madeleine L'Engle
“At Tara in this fateful hour,
I place all Heaven with its power,
And the sun with its brightness,
And the snow with its whiteness,
And the fire with all the strength it hath,
And the lightning with its rapid wrath,
And the winds with their swiftness along their path,
And the sea with its deepness,
And the rocks with their steepness,
And the earth with its starkness:
All these I place,
By God's almighty help and grace
Between myself and the powers of darkness!”
Madeleine L'Engle, A Swiftly Tilting Planet

Madeleine L'Engle
“You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”
Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine L'Engle
“A book, too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.”
Madeleine L'Engle
