Happy birthday, David Wells

Happy 56th birthday to David Wells, who threw a perfect game for the New York Yankees in 1998.

On Sunday, May 17, 1998, Wells threw a perfect game at Yankee Stadium for a 4-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. It was the first Yankees’ perfecto since Don Larsen’s gem in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series.

Padres take sole ownership of no-hit futility record

SAN DIEGO —The San Diego
Padres are now the major-league record holder for regular-season no-hit
futility.

The Pittsburgh Pirates just put a “1” in the “H” column against Eric Lauer to mark the 8,020th regular-season Padres game without a no-hitter. In the New York Mets’ 8,020th regular-season game, Johan Santana no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals to end New York’s circa-1962 drought at 8,019.

The Padres, who have played 34 post-season games, do have a chance of avoiding the total game record when counting those match-ups. San Diego has now played 8,054 total games without a no-hitter, 39 shy of the Mets total of 8,093 (74 post-season games). Maybe we’ll tweet during that game in late June or early July for old time’s sake, but NoNoHitters.com is officially putting daily count updates on hiatus until the Padres draw close to the Philadelphia Phillies’ mark for the longest drought — 8,945 games.

For now, I’m going to get
back to the action here at Petco and see if the Padres can notch a W.

Padres tie Mets’ mark for no-hit futility

LOS ANGELES — The San Diego
Padres have tied the New York Mets’ record for no-hit futility.

The Dodger Stadium scoreboard shows a “1” in the Los Angeles hit column, marking the 8,019th regular-season Padres game without a no-hitter.

The Mets reached 8,019 — a
number that two days later would become that franchise’s final tally — on May
30, 2012, when the Philadelphia Phillies’ Ty Wigginton hit a second-inning
homer off Dillon Gee. In the Mets’ next game on June 1, 2012, Johan Santana
no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals to end the circa-1962 streak.

Unless Eric Lauer can throw a no-hitter in the team’s 8,020th regular-season game tomorrow night at Petco, the circa-1969 Padres are poised to become sole owners of the record.

I’m going to get back to the action, as it’s my first outing to Dodger Stadium and I want to enjoy the rest of the game. I’ll see you at Petco tomorrow.

Lyles takes Padres perfecto into 8th, 1 year ago today

The San Diego Padres’ Jordan Lyles came within 5 outs of throwing a perfect game, 1 year ago today.

Lyles through 7⅓ innings of perfect ball at Petco Park on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, retiring the first 22 Colorado Rockies batters he faced. Up stepped Trevor Story, and he lined a one-out single to left to break up the perfect game and the no-hitter. Lyles (7⅓), Kirby Yates (⅓) and Brad Hand (1⅓) wound up combining for the 30th one-hitter in Padres history, a 4-0 win.

Story’s hit marked the 7,858th regular-season Padres game with no no-hitter, putting San Diego 161 games away from matching the New York Mets’ record of 8,019 regular-season games without a no-hitter.

Black Sox’s Yokely no-hits Stars

The Baltimore Black Sox’s Laymon Yokely tossed a no-hitter during the second game of a doubleheader after throwing five-plus innings of the opener, 92 years ago today.

During the second game of a Sunday, May 15, 1927 doubleheader at Maryland Baseball Park, Yokely no-hit the Cuban Stars for an 8-0 victory. Errors by third-baseman Jud Wilson and first-baseman/manager Ben Taylor allowed two Stars to reach base, but Yokely stranded them both.

In the opener, after starter Joe Strong gave up six runs in the fourth, Yokely took the ball, ended the inning and finished the game, yielding 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk, earning the W in a 9-8 win

A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Yokely was scouted and signed by the Black Sox while he was attending Livingstone College in Salsbury, North Carolina, according to James Riley’sThe Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues. He later played for the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants, the Philadelphia Stars, the Washington Black Senators, the Edgewater Giants and the Baltimore Elite Giants.

Yanks’ Gooden no-hits Mariners, 23 years ago today

Dwight “Doc” Gooden threw a no-hitter for the New York Yankees, 23 years ago today.

On Tuesday, May 14, 1996, Gooden no-hit the Seattle Mariners for a 2-0 victory at Yankee Stadium. “Doc” appeared to be running out of steam in the ninth frame as he walked Alex Rodriguez and Edgar Martínez and then threw a wild pitch to allow runners to reach second and third. But he recovered to strike out Jay Buhner and then got Paul Sorrento to pop out to short to complete the no-no. Teammates carried the 31-year-old hero off the Yankee Stadium field to the cheers of more than 20,000 fans.

Gooden thrice came close to accomplishing a no-no while with the New York Mets:

On June 6, 1984, in just his 11th major-league start, the emerging strikeout artist reached the eighth inning with a no-hitter intact before yielding a lead-off single to the Pirates’ Doug Frobel. New York won 2-1 in 13 innings. On September 7, 1984, Gooden threw a one-hit 10-0 shutout against the Chicago Cubs. The only Cubs hit was a 5th-inning single by Keith Moreland. On June 5, 1988, Gooden again reached the eighth inning and again lost it on the leadoff batter as the Cubs’ Damon Berryhill singled. Gooden held on for an 11-3 complete-game victory.

Also throwing a no-hitter on this date was the Kansas City Royals’ Jim Colborn. On Saturday, May 14, 1977, Colborn no-hit the Texas Rangers for a 6-0 win at Royals Stadium.

Happy 135th birthday to Miles ‘Alex’ Main, threw no-no for K.C. Packers

Miles “Alex” Main, who threw a no-hitter for the Kansas City Packers in 1915, was born 135 years ago today.

,Main no-hit the Buffalo Buffeds/Blues in a Federal League match-up at Buffalo’s International Fair Association Grounds on August 16, 1915. Only three Buffeds reached base thanks to one walk and a couple of Kansas City errors as the Packers won 5-0.

Main also pitched briefly for the Detroit Tigers (1914) and the Philadelphia Phillies (1915).

‘Toothpick’ Sam Jones becomes first African-American to throw MLB no-no, 64 years ago today

“Toothpick” Sam Jones became the first African-American to throw a Major League Baseball no-hitter, 64 years ago today.

Jones, pitching for the Chicago Cubs on May 12, 1955, no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 4-0 win at Wrigley Field. He completed an accomplishment that likely would have been preceded by such Negro Leagues greats as Dick “Cannonball” Redding, “Bullet” Joe Rogan, Leon Day and Satchel Paige had baseball integrated earlier.

Also throwing no-hitters on this date are Charles “Chief” Bender, Carl Erskine and A.J. Burnett.

Bender, a starter for the Philadelphia Athletics, threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Naps at Shibe Park on Thursday, May 12, 1910. Erskine tossed his second Brooklyn Dodgers no-hitter, a 3-0 win over the New York Giants, on Saturday, May 12, 1956 at Ebbets Field. Burnett, a Florida Marlins pitcher, no-hit the San Diego Padres at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday, May 12, 2001 for a 3-0 win.

Reds’ Eller no-hits Cards, 100 years ago today

Today is the 100th anniversary of the Cincinnati Reds’ Horace “Hod” Eller’s no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Eller, pitching for the Reds at Redland Field on May 11, 1919, no-hit the Cardinals for a 6-0 victory. Eller walked three, but two were retired while trying to steal, so Eller faced only 28 batters.

Also throwing no-hitters on this date were Al Leiter and Sandy Koufax.

Koufax, who threw four no-hitters with the Los Angeles Dodgers, tossed his second no-no against the San Francisco Giants on this date in 1963.

And on Saturday, May 11, 1996, Leiter threw the Florida Marlins’ first no-hitter. The New Jersey native no-hit the Colorado Rockies for an 11-0 win at Joe Robbie Stadium.
