Kingdom of Embers wins Readers' Choice Gold Award in YA Fantasy

I'm so excited to announce that Kingdom of Embers won the Readers' Choice Gold Award and got a 5* rating!

Here's part of what K.J. said "Kingdom of Embers is the first book in Tricia Copeland's Kingdom Journals series. Written in an engaging first-person narrative, you will be whisked away on a YA urban paranormal adventure centering around Alana, a girl whose problems run deeper than anyone can imagine, and they are just beginning. I really enjoyed the scene-building and atmosphere created as we are drawn into Alana's life, uncovering secrets, and watching as she keeps her own from the ones who are trying to protect her. Mystery, suspense, friendship, and danger fill the pages as Alana begins to uncover a looming threat, and with local murders, rogue vampires, and bullies, it is taking every ounce of her restraint to hold back the power both sides of her wield. With characters ranging from teenagers to ancient supernatural beings, you have a wide variety of strong characters to know and love. Kingdom of Embers truly is an engaging read. It will have you hooked from beginning to end, and leaving you wanting more, desperate to uncover the dark plans whose foundations have already been already laid."

The Kindle version of the book (FREE on KU) now has an extended finale chapter!

You can read the full review here: https://readersfavorite.com/book-revi... and see other winners in the category here: https://readersfavorite.com/2020-awar...

Happy reading and happy listening!

Alena from Kingdom of Embers

In many of my reviews, I’ve noted feedback on Alena’s character to be more contentious than the other characters. People either love her or hate her.

Her personality is not sweet or endearing, but many times experienced as annoying. So, I thought I’d give you some more background and insight into the vampire-witch hybrid character who is Alena of the Kingdom Journals series.

I’ve gotten some statements from readers in the reviews about not liking Alena, thinking she is a brat, and that they don’t care for her personality. And it’s true. Alena is not the warm fuzzy type character. But I would propose that she is misunderstood.

Alena was the first vampire I created so she holds a special place in my heart. She is the main character in the first book in the Kingdom Journals series entitled Kingdom of Embers.

The Kingdom Journals series is a contemporary urban fantasy series. In this series, vampires live among humans and are an evolutionary branch of the human species. They’re not magic, or made vampires, they’re born vampires. Their metabolism is high and their body temperature 106 degrees Fahrenheit. They have super senses, can see in the dark, hear things far, far away, smell like a dog can, are able to run like a cheetah, and are super strong. They have photographic memories and never get sick. They sleep lightly like a cat, always ready to respond to danger. They prefer sleeping during the day and being active during the night. They can live up to a thousand years. But, they can be killed by conventional means, bullets, knives, explosives, just like a regular human. Their biggest challenge in the 21st century is that they can’t eat processed foods or anything with additives or chemicals. It makes them ill. With all of these qualities it is hard to blend into modern society.

Humans are not aware that vampires exist. Most keep to themselves and send their children to special vampire schools until they are able to control their craving for human blood. Yes, they eat natural foods, meats, vegetables, fruits, and breads, but blood, especially human blood tastes best to them. Raw meats are a favorite, but human blood would be their food source of choice.

So imagine being Alena, a half vampire-half witch seventeen year-old, attending high school and trying to blend into the human world. Everything is louder, smells are amplified, lights brighter. She has to control her speed and can’t let anyone touch her for too long, so normal humans don’t realize she’s different. Plus, her emotions are heightened as well. She reacts too quickly, feels more deeply, and her personality in the books reflects that. When she comes across as bossy, anxious, critical, and over-emotional, these are all personality traits in line with an over-sensitive creature trying to fit in in the world. When she is with her witch and vampire friends and family, she doesn’t have to pretend, so her personality of being driven, curious, and energetic gushes out sometimes in ways that come across as demanding, perfectionistic, and dramatic.

Now, with this perspective we can re-evaluate Alena and perhaps have a little compassion and empathy for her. She grew up without a father. Has never met him. All her mother tells her is that he stays away to keep them safe. In addition, her mother moves them around every 2-3 years, so Alena struggles to have consistency in anything but her immediate family. This family consists of her mother, Anne, a 400 year-old vampire, Elizabeth, a 600 year-old vampire who serves as a pseudo-grandmother figure, and Orm, a five hundred year old witch, who serves as her mentor and grandfather figure. Alena’s mother is chancellor of the vampires. The Chancellor is the highest position in the vampire government, so Alena is also surrounded by vampire guards and staff who keep them safe.

To add to the challenges, Alena is a vampire-witch hybrid. Vampire-witch hybrids are forbidden because they are so powerful. So Alena must keep her witch nature hidden from vampires outside her family. Plus, as I mentioned, she attends normal human high school, so she can’t let any of the humans know she is a vampire or a witch.

Further, Alena’s mother is searching for something. This search requires Alena’s help but her mother never divulges what they are looking for. At first Alena assumes it is her father, but then she realizes they always scout high school males. Alena begins to think her mother is searching for another vampire-witch hybrid. But why? To be her mate? Ewww.

Alena decides to try to figure out what her mother is looking for. She discovers Hunter, a boy that looks eerily familiar. They realize they saw each other as imaginary friends in preschool. What? How can an imaginary friend be real? And how could they have imagined each other? The two set out to unravel the mystery. They come to believe they may be two of a trinity of very special witches.

I’m not going to give away much more. But I hope this explains a bit more about Alena, her personality, and drive in the series. I’ve had comments like “I didn’t like that Alena lied to her mother about trying to figure out the mystery”. But why would Alena tell her mother when her mother wasn’t being forthcoming with Alena? We witness a scene where Alena demands that her mother gives her more information about her father and her mother refuses.

In short, Alena has a lot to deal with. Her vampire nature and challenges shape her personality. When I made her character I purposely weaved traits of being short-tempered and emotional into her actions and conversation to reflect who she is. So yes, Alena may seem a bit snooty, arrogant, and bossy. She is anxious and emotional, but she has a huge heart, wants to illuminate the truth, and loves her friends and family. So next time you read, or listen, to one of the Kingdom Journals books, remember all of this when evaluating her character and personality and see if it fits.

I would love your feedback on Alena’s character and if it’s okay to create characters that aren’t warm and fuzzy that everyone likes. Leave your thoughts in the comments! I can’t wait to hear them.

Want to grab Kingdom of Embers it is 99 cents and the whole series is 1/2 off through 10/31/2021.

Camille from Kingdom of Darkness, Kingdom Journals Volume 2

Camille is the MC in Kingdom of Darkness, Kingdom Journals Vol. 2, Camille’s Story. I had a ton of fun researching for this book set in modern day Iceland and Italy. The story begins in Reykjavik, Iceland where Camille lives with her mother and brother.

Her mother moves them every other year in an effort to improve Camille’s mental health. Camille suffers from bouts of what they believe to be is schizophrenia, seeing visions of people she’s never met, like a silent movie playing in her head. Iceland seems to be the cure for her issues until Camille is thrust back into episodes of seeing a teen girl and boy. But the pair seem awfully familiar, like she knows them. The scenes continue and she sees the pair performing magic, battling witches in a forest. She feels she’s going crazy until she hears, physically hears, them call a name she hasn’t thought of in years, Ivy.

Ivy is the name her preschool age imaginary friends assigned to her. But she hasn’t seen them since the age of four when, convinced she’d gone crazy, her mother put her on psychiatric medication. And after she hears the name the visions begin to include sound, like she is watching people in the same room with her. They wake her during the night and plague her all day.

Convinced she must get to the bottom of these visions without her mother’s interference, Camille goes on a quest to learn all she can about a magical dagger the two witches, Alena and Hunter, of her visions, want. She gets close to unraveling the mystery, but her mother discovers the secrets Camille’s been keeping.

Locked away in a mental hospital, Camille fears she’ll never see Alena and Hunter again. Never learn the truth. Until she finds a camp for troubled youth at a national park in Iceland and convinces her mother to let Camille go. Dr. Antos promises a way to stop the visions without medication, and Camille decides this is the best route.

At the camp Camille meets Jude, a teen, that like her wears bracelets of lode stones meant to stop hallucinations. The camp is like nothing she’s ever experienced, glacier hikes, rappelling, and kayaking in the ocean are activities she never dreamed of doing. Camille and Jude gravitate towards each other, bonding over mutual experiences. Then Jude reveals that he can do magic when his bracelets are off. Shocked, Camille can’t figure out who to trust. Is Jude lying? Is Dr. Antos?

Still, Camille can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to this than meets the eye. Plus, her dad goes missing and she becomes convinced Dr. Antos is behind it. Seeing no other option, she travels with Jude and Dr. Antos to a castle compound inhabited by a cover of witches in Sardinia, Italy. Trapped in the castle, the choice will either be her best way to finding her father and the truth, or the worse mistake she’s ever made.

You can find out what happens to Camille in the YA urban fantasy, Kingdom of Darkness, on audio and in ebook, and paperback.

Until Halloween each of the four books in the complete series are 1/2 off!

Jude from Kingdom of Honor

Jude in Kingdom of Honor YA urban fantasy

We first met Jude in Kingdom of Darkness, the second book of the Kingdom Journals young adult urban fantasy series. Jude, like last week’s witch of the week, Camille, attended the camp to help with mental health issues. He too suffered from episodes of hallucinations, seeing people and hearing voices that aren’t there. In Kingdom of Darkness, he revealed to Camille that he can perform magic. Dr. Antos, their so-called psychologist, helped Jude learn he is a witch. His hallucinations prompted him to discover his witch heritage.

In Kingdom of Darkness, Camille wasn’t sure she could trust Jude or Dr. Antos. Were they working together to lure her into a trap? But when Camille learned her father was missing, she decided to travel to Italy with Dr. Antos and Jude to seek answers. In Italy, at the castle compound used as a headquarters for Michael’s coven, Camille and Jude trained to develop their magic. But we still weren’t sure of Jude’s alliances.

I never intended for Jude to develop into such a pivotal character in this series. But he did and he rose to the occasion, playing a vital role in the trinity’s hunt for the lance that is prophesied to break an age old curse. The trinity of witches, Alena, Camille, and Hunter, were fated to break the curse that damns witch souls to purgatory forever. Jude could become a herald to Camille and aid the trinity in their quest. Or he may be an agent for Michael’s coven who were bent on never seeing the curse broken.

Nonetheless in Kingdom of Honor, Jude poured all his energy into finding a way to rescue Camille from Michael’s coven. He and her father found Alena and Hunter and attempted to free Camille. And an even bigger mystery awaited Jude as he began to learn his heritage and his father’s role. Does he become a true herald and champion for the trinity or does his alliances lie elsewhere?

Find out in Kingdom of Honor, Volume 3, Jude’s Story of the Kingdom Journals. You can listen to Kingdom of Honor on audiobook or read in ebook or paperback.

Kingdom of War - Kingdom Journals Finale

We first meet Hunter in Kingdom of Embers, the first of the Kingdom Journals, young adult urban fantasy series. In Kingdom of Embers, Alena’s mother, Anne, chooses Hunter as her target for a search we, or Alena, don’t know the point of. When she sees him Alena pretends not to recognize him or detect the ping of magic she senses emanating from him. In the days to follow she returns to the library to find Hunter. They realize they’d known each other as imaginary friends as preschoolers and set out on a quest to discover how and why.

Hunter is a regular guys, fairly smart, with lots of friends, and is interested in studying engineering in college. He plays guard on his basketball team. He’s an only child who lives with his mother in a small apartment in Los Angeles. He spends time with his father infrequently as well as his half-brother. His father and brother travel often but it doesn’t bother Hunter because he doesn’t fully trust them. His father seems odd and his brother is cruel and malicious. Hunter is dedicated to his mother and wants to protect her from his father.

As the story progresses, Alena admits to Hunter that she is a witch and believes he is as well. Hunter struggles to believe but is convinced when Alena helps him learn to perform magic. Then, a witch seer, named Chalondra, reads Hunter and he realizes his father is the leader of all the witch lines. Further, his brother is a vampire-witch hybrid. In Kingdom of Embers we learn little about what Chalondra tells Hunter. But the prequel to the series, Kingdom of the Damned, gives the history and legacy of Hunter’s family and their coven. They descend from the archangel Michael and serve as leaders of the witches.

A second part to Alena and Hunter’s findings is a curse and prophecy for breaking the curse. The curse placed on the witch people damns their souls to purgatory for eternity and restricts them from having permanent homes. They must never own a dwelling and move at least over two years. This limits their numbers and powers as witches. The prequels to the series reveals the originator of the curse and reason behind it. All these details will get us off topic today, but believe me, it’s cool! Alena and Hunter learn they are two of a trinity of witches destined to break the curse. But first they must find the third of the trinity and learn how to end the curse.

Researching the curse, they guess that the Lance of Longinus is the key to releasing the curse on witchkind. Even more shocking is the revelation that Hunter’s brother, Theron, knows where the lance is. Unknowingly, Theron boasts to Hunter about being bestowed the age old relic by their father. The finale in Kingdom of Embers finds Alena and Hunter battling Theron and Thanatos for possession of the sword. I won’t give away any other spoilers.

Following Kingdom of Embers, Kingdom of Darkness, and Kingdom of Honor, relay how Alena and Hunter find the third witch of the trinity, Camille, and come to be aided by Jude, Tyler, and D.J. The finale to the series, Kingdom of War, Hunter’s Story, tells of Hunter’s transformation to a full witch, how they form a coven, and seek to break the curse.

Hunter must battle his nature as a leader and the desire to command those around him, to work as a team with Alena, Camille, Jude, Tyler, and D.J. I don’t want to say too much more about the finale to the series so as not to ruin the fun. You can read Kingdom of War in ebook format or listen on audiobook. And bonus, the Kingdom Journals characters are living on in my new series, Realm Chronicles that begins with To be a Fae Queen.

Kingdom of the Damned Book Sale & Spotlight

My annual Kingdom of the Damned 99 cents Amazon sale is back! Through Nov. 9, 2021, Kingdom of the Damned will be 99 cents in the US and UK and free on KU!

More about Kingdom of the Damned... a historical vampire fantasy...

In writing my Kingdom Journals young adult urban fantasy series it became obvious that a back story for Anne (Alena’s mother) and Sonya (evil witch enemy) would be both super cool and give more context to the battle our trinity of witches Alena, Camille, and Hunter were up against.

Nestled between books 3 and 4, Kingdom of Honor and Kingdom of War, I inserted Kingdom of the Damned, an epic historical vampire fantasy and paranormal romance that follows the vampire Anne from 1557 to 1999. The book became quite a challenge as I researched 16th century France, English courting traditions, through the United States Civil War era and beyond.

From the back cover…

Witches set her hopes and dreams ablaze. Can she fight fire with love?

France, 1557. Vampire Anne Scott feels helpless within the divided supernatural community. As a child, she witnessed her family burned by witches disguised as religious zealots. So after losing a lover to a vengeful vampire years later, she turns her thirst for revenge into a vow for peace.

Traveling the globe for centuries, Anne befriends allies and battles immortal enemies in a fight for unification. Only one immortal man has the power to mend her broken heart and end the carnage. But she hasn’t seen him for 200 years…

Can Anne bring the warring worlds together, or will her vision die alongside her?

Kingdom of the Damned is the captivating historical fantasy prequel to the thrilling Kingdom Journals Series. If you like paranormal combat, epic quests, and determined heroines, then you’ll love Tricia Copeland’s enthralling period adventure.

To be a Fae Queen Audiobook Release

To be a Fae Queen YA fantasy Audiobook Release

I'm so excited to share the release of my YA fantasy, To be a Fae Queen, on audiobook! The book was produced by The Audio Flow team and narrated by Jillian Yetter.

More about the young adult fantasy To be a Fae Queen

To be a Fae Queen is a young adult fantasy about a faerie princess who becomes ruler of her kingdom at age fifteen. Not only is she a young monarch but also the first female ruler in all Middle Earth. In addition to worrying about evil monsters from Lower Earth she must prove to her own people she is worthy of the crown.

From the back cover...

To Be a Fae Queen – 5* Readers’ Favorite Review

With an endearing yet fierce female protagonist, fans of Sarah J. Maas and Jenna Wolfhart will love this epic Fae fantasy.

The last of her line, a faerie princess prepares to take the throne. But multiple forces plot against her, some trusted friends…

After losing her brothers, Titania studied and trained to rule Aubren. But she hadn’t planned on becoming Queen at fifteen. Now with her reign challenged from within the castle walls, she must decide what is best for her kingdom. Should another rule in her stead? Or has fate led her to this moment?

Only she can decide a path that becomes littered with choices. Will a marriage shore up her reign? Could naming a successor be enough? And what of the creatures of the deep and a tale of one who can end all evil? Faced with a choice to aid beings of Upper Earth, she must weigh whether to believe her inner compass and face charges of treason. Accepting the edicts of the High Council may be a safer route, but is it the best choice for the realm?

Titania’s emerging power lies just beyond her reach. Will it manifest we she most needs it? Or do they face  an eternity in darkness?

The first book in the Realm Chronicles series, To Be a Fae Queen is a magical journey into the realm of Middle Earth. If you like fearless heroines, you’ll love Tricia Copeland’s thrilling fantasy.

More about Middle Earth, the Fae Realm, and the Fae

Middle Earth lies just under our human realm. Sandwiched between Lower Earth and Upper Earth, Middle Earth serves as a buffer between the evil spirits of Sheol, or purgatory, and our human world. The Fae protect the human realm for these evil spirits. To access the Fae Realm one may travel through a Faerie Ring, a magic portal. The Fae pass through these rings to access our world as well as Lower Earth and may enter freely. But a human or other being who enters Middle Earth may not return to the human world.

The Fae Realm mirrors our world with the same land forms. However the Fae do not utilize modern technology having neither electricity, modern telecommunications, or computer technologies. They live as a simple folk, most of the time in peace. Their armies train to defend their realm as well as the human realm from evil spirits that try to invade from Lower Earth.

Becoming Queen, Titania attempts to rule the kingdom of Aubren as her father did before her. Aubren sits on the eastern side of what we know as the continent of Australia. The capitol where Titania's castle sits is called Capitolshire which lies near one of the Faerie Rings, the Daintree Ring. In Middle Earth the Fae have no special powers but when they travel to Upper Earth they possess extraordinary strength, speed, they may take any form, and they hear thoughts of all beings. The Faerie Rings are looked over by Ring Keepers. These Ring Keepers have special abilities in the Fae Realm other Fae do not.

Ready to enter the realm of Middle Earth and discover if Titania will be able to hold the monarchy of her kingdom? Get To be a Fae Queen on audiobook, ebook, or in paperback here.

The Realm Chronicles series continues with To be a Fae Guardian, out January of 2022. Love audiobooks? Don't miss the crossover series, the Kingdom Journals, also in audiobook format.

Happy listening,

Tricia
