I used to teach in a school in a poor area o…moreMy next book is the life of Steve Brown and his Auntie Daff - two minor characters taken from 'Marjorie'. I used to teach in a school in a poor area of London in the early 1970's. Steve is based on one of the children in my class. I thought he was the best kid ever. He was extremely poor and smelly but enterprising and determined. He handed in his knuckle dusters and knives at the beginning of the day and collected them before making his way home. Life was very tough for him but he had a wonderful spirit. Most importantly, he had compassion for other outsiders, becoming friends with the only black boy in the class who was having a tough time. Together, they formed a team, a united front. I think it is a story worth telling. Aunty Daff's story is interwoven with Steve's story and we learn about his very early years and her attachment to him.(less)
