quick note: i receive so many emails asking me to share the details on how to start a creative business. although i share all the specific how to's in my ebook series, i'd like to share my general thoughts on how we can begin to step into the creative lives we've always imagined - whether you are interested in starting/expanding a creative biz or not. because it's really about dreaming big and listening to our own unique callings, no matter what those dreams and callings may be.

so, over the course of this week , i will highlight a few excerpts from my ebooks - thoughts that i share in the opening chapters before getting too specific on the ins and outs of the how to's. i hope you get inspired!

another one

I'd like to answer a few questions that often come my way on the topic of inspiration, passion, commitment, and goals:

Q: Kelly Rae, I would love to know more about how your husband felt about you taking on a part-time job rather than a full-time one when you moved to California. Many of us look to our families, spouses, children…for their support to help get our businesses going (or keep them running). Did your husband play a part in launching your business? Did you have a back up plan at all?

A: Really good question. And the answer is a hard one. As much as I love my husband and as much as he is my biggest fan, he was just as concerned as I was with my decision to get the part time job instead of the full-time. In fact, we had many conversations where he lovingly suggested I hold off on the creative biz and go ahead and get a full time job. It was all unknown territory for both of us. What if it didn't work? What if I couldn't sell enough of my work to fill in the gaps of what we needed, money wise? There were so many concerns.

This is the compromise we agreed on: nothing is permanent. If six months went by and we were dirt poor, I would get a full time job. That was enough time for me to take advantage of all that inspiration and motivation and get things moving. Since then, I've always loved the idea of nothing is permanent. It's all about trial and error until you find the right fit. Nothing is permanent...there's so much safety in that I think. I'm not suggesting you go out and quit your day jobs. Instead, build your biz slowly so that you can possibly transition out of full time work to part time work and so on...

Q: My family/spouse isn't that supportive of my chasing my dreams. What should I do?

A: It's true that we don't all have families that get us, or who understand our creative nature and desire to grow a creative business. They think it's a waste of time and energy and money. For those of you struggling with this family dynamic, I can't encourage you enough to find people who WILL support you. Your spouse may truly not get this particular piece of you but perhaps there are other people in your life that can fill that void. I love my husband to pieces but he'll never be that girlfriend who, just by being who she is, knows just what to say, what advice to give, etc., etc. On the flipside, I love my girlfriends but they'll never be able to give me what my husband gives me. I do believe that our friends and family serve different roles and purposes in our lives. If your family/spouses aren't able to serve the cheerleading/supportive role for you when it comes to growing your creative biz, then it's imperative that you find others who will. Later on, I talk more in depth about ways to create community. We must, must, must create the experiences we need and for many of us, surrounding ourselves with supportive people in our lives is the key experience we most need to succeed, the one that is missing.

Q: My interests are so broad; I have a hard time focusing on one thing. Kelly, can you touch on that?

A: I really want to encourage you to run with the idea that keeps circling back to your heart. When you really peel away the layers, which idea speaks the loudest and is most true to your callings, your whispers, your inspiration. I'd follow THAT idea/inspiration - the one that keeps you up at night, the one that pesters you, the one whispering (maybe loudly) for you to pay it some attention.

ps: that's the end of this week's series on inspiration, passion, commitment, and goals. i hope you enjoyed it! xxo, kelly rae

a few things to consider

so, over the course of this week, i will highlight a few excerpts from my ebooks - thoughts that i share in the opening chapters before getting too specific on the ins and outs of the how to's. i hope you get inspired!

In regards to all the things we've talked about this week (passion, inspiration, commitment, goals), here are a few things to consider:

In your wildest dreams, what does your creative biz look like? Are you working fulltime? Part time? What does your everyday schedule look like?

What's your inspiration - the passion the keeps you up at night? The whisper that keeps coming back to you. The one, no matter how quirky and unreasonable it seems, keeps circling back to your heart and mind?

Consider writing a letter to your future self. Write it, seal it, and open it three months from now. Read this post on my personal blog for inspiration. You might just be surprised!

Who in your life can you speak with about these creative biz dreams? Where do they feel safe?

Who in your life seems to be living their dreams? What big decisions did they make early on to get them to where they are now? What observations can you make about how they committed to their inspiration?

Was there a time in your life when you didn't follow your true inspiration? What did that experience feel like?

What are you immediate goals? Long–term goals? Be brave here. List them all and dream big.

Are you ready to make the commitment to your creative biz dreams? What's stopping you? What's not stopping you? What small ritual can you do to declare that commitment? What about writing it down in your journal, your blog, telling a dear friend? Whatever you need to do to make that declaration feel present and real, do it. Practice courage...

I'd like to end today's post with a quick story that reminds me of the beginning of this journey we're on together, this journey of taking flight...

About a year ago, my friend Andrea and I were on a plane together, on our way to a creative retreat. We were in our seats chatting up a storm when the plane was on the runway getting ready to take off. As the plane's engine revved up I began to get nervous the way I always do when we're about to take off. To help calm my nerves and distract myself, I began to purposely chat even more with Andrea, but all of the sudden she interrupted my chatter and said, "Oh wait a second and hold that thought because I love this part and I don't want to miss it." She then faced forward in her seat, looked out the plane window with a wide grin on her face, and genuinely enjoyed the experience of taking flight. Meanwhile, I held my breath, closed my eyes, and prayed my way through take off. I mention this story because the same is true in our creative journeys. Some of arrive at the point of take off with sincere enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. And some of us arrive exhausted by the thought of it with fears and doubts. Either way, we are all meant for the journey of taking flight into the lives we've always wanted and the reward is the same: we all soar.

up next: i answer a couple of questions that come my way in regards to my early journey.

a few words about goal setting

quick note: i receive so many emails asking me to share the details on how to start a creative business. although i share all the specific how to's in my ebook series, i'd like to share my general thoughts on how we can begin to step into the creative lives we've always imagined - whether you are interested in starting/expanding a creative biz or not. because it's really about dreaming big and listening to our own unique callings, no matter what those dreams and callings may be.

so, over the course of this week, i will highlight a few excerpts from my ebooks - thoughts that i share in the opening chapters before getting too specific on the ins and outs of the how to's. i hope you get inspired!

(what is calling you?)

As you think about your inspiration/passion/commitment, and before we dive into the more practical tips and strategies, I'd love it if you start thinking about your goals. Although I've never had a formal business plan (because each time I considered the idea of writing a business plan, I got stuck and paralyzed in fear and complication), I've always had goals (even if they scared me silly). Goals like: open up an Etsy shop, supplement my part-time job income with art sales enough to pay our bills, and expand my blog audience. Later in this ebook, I share concrete strategies on how to prioritize and actualize your goals but for now I just want you to consider what your immediate and long–term goals are. Write them down in a journal. Share them with your friends, on your blogs, wherever you feel comfortable. Setting small and/or big goals now while we're in the throws of really listening to our true inspiration/passion/commitment will help us keep our goals intentional and aligned with those very inspirations/passions/commitments along the way. That way, when all sorts of options and opportunities are thrown your way, you can look back on your goals to make sure you're saying yes to opportunities that truly align themselves with our goals.

I made the mistake once of saying yes to a teaching opportunity (long ago) that wasn't really fulfilling. In the end I realized that it was because I said yes to something (teaching at a huge event) that wasn't really in sync with my goals (teaching at small/intimate events) that I had set for myself long ago - instead, I got sucked into something that wasn't really in tune with the vision I had for a creative biz. As a result, I got a bit off track. Why? Because one decision + opportunity leads to the next and there's potential to wake up down the road and wonder "how'd I get here?…this isn't the vision I had for my life" when we keep saying yes to things that aren't in line with our goals. So yes, set those goals now as best you can and as you work your way through this ebook. That way, when doors start to open and opportunities come your way, you'll have a roadmap that YOU created to help guide you in your decision–making. Remember, align your goals with your true inspiration/passion/commitment, and you can't go wrong.

up next: a few things to consider (questions, prompts, ideas) when it comes to all of this.

it's about passion, inspiration, and committment

i receive so many emails asking me to share the details on how to start a creative business. although i share all the specific how to's in my ebook series, i'd like to share my general thoughts on how we can begin to step into the creative lives we've always imagined - whether you are interested in starting/expanding a creative biz or not. because it's really about dreaming big and listening to our own unique callings, no matter what those dreams and callings may be.

so, over the course of this week, i will highlight a few excerpts from my ebooks - thoughts that i share in the opening chapter before getting too specific on the ins and outs of the how to's. i hope you get inspired!

photo session with denise at bohophoto.com (my hands, photo by denise andrade)

I deeply believe in the power of listening to our inner voices and inspirations that nudge us to dream bigger, to simply begin, to acknowledge what is calling us. Perhaps it's why you bought this ebook – something in you whispered to take the next step, to gather information, to allow yourself to be inspired.

No matter where we are in our journeys, the whispers in our lives want us to take notice, to nurture their message and to discover our own potential. Whether they're quietly nudging us from time to time with long periods of silence in between, or annoying us with their persistence, their presence is important and meaningful. We must listen. It may just be a whisper, a small voice tucked deep inside the pockets of your heart, but really, it's your life's inspiration calling you. And we all have them, no matter who we are or where we might stand in our creative journeys.

Many of you may still be deciphering what your whispers are telling you while many of you are hearing them loud and clear. I also suspect that they'll start nudging you as you move along in this ebook. Be sure to pay attention, write them down, and lean in for their messages. Inside all of those whispers live your life's inspiration. And we've got to have the inspiration to have the passion, to have the commitment. It starts with the whispers…

We can't control what our whispers tell us just like we can't control what inspires us. These things are bigger than us, they're callings that we can't necessarily explain. We just know when we feel the lift, when we feel the joy, when we feel that slightly uncomfortable yet exhilarating feeling of 'I really want to do that!' Follow THAT inspiration, not what you think will sell or what you think would be profitable in the marketplace. Your inspiration has to be deeply yours (even if it's the wonkiest idea out there) if you want to create a deeply fulfilling (heart + soul) creative business. It's true that people make oodles of cash everyday from running various businesses, but when it comes to running a creative business, where you are the creator of the creative in that business, the inspiration needs to be deeply embedded in your heart. Otherwise, you'll be working against the current of flow.

And by flow, I mean the idea that doors will open more readily for us if we're following our true passion, that things (opportunity, success, luck) will happen more organically and easily when our creative businesses are aligned with our true inspiration.

For example, when I was dreaming up ebook ideas, I had a few options to choose from. I could either do an artsy/painting–oriented ebook or I could do a creative business–oriented ebook. When it came down to it, the creative business–oriented ebook was more aligned with my inspiration. I got more excited when I thought about writing about that kind of content for an ebook vs. writing an ebook about painting techniques. Of course, my mind was taunting me with "you'll make more money if you do the painting ebook, that's what will sell better, that's what everyone wants." Yet, my heart and inspiration were truly with the creative business ebook - it was the idea that put a skip in my step, the idea my heart kept circling back to. Luckily, I followed the creative biz ebook inspiration and I'm so glad I did. Everything about setting up this ebook, writing it, promoting it, etc., etc. has come fairly easily because it was aligned with the flow I talked about earlier. If I had chosen to do the other ebook, I bet it would have been harder for me, less fun, and more frustrating. And hard + not fun + frustrating = an unhappy existence = a price I'm not willing to pay (I want to be happy!).

Get the idea? When we follow our true inspiration, our energy communicates it in every way. It's contagious, draws people into not only what we're doing, but what we're selling too. It's a win–win.

Once we allow ourselves to listen to those whispers of true inspiration, our passion unravels with clarity and vision. Whatever that passion is (writing, photography, scrapbooking, painting, etc.), it wants you to commit to its offerings. By purchasing this ebook, you've acknowledged your whispers, inspiration, your passion, and now I'm asking you to really commit. Commit to the reasons you bought this ebook whether it was to start an online presence, expand your online presence, or to find ways to face your fears — whatever your reasons or goals, I'm asking you to wholeheartedly commit to seeing them through. Because, I promise you, when you have the inspiration, and the passion, AND the commitment, your wildest business dreams can come true.

As I write this, I'm reminded of the very second I committed to my dream of creating a successful creative business. I was working as a fulltime medical social worker by day and creating my heart out in the evenings and on weekends. I was feeling stuck and uninspired in my full time job and beginning to dream about the idea of going part-time and supplementing my income with possibly selling my art. But at that same time in my life, my husband and I were about to move to California so he could enroll in fulltime graduate school. I was dreading moving to California because I knew I'd have to get another uninspiring fulltime job because my husband wouldn't be able to bring in an income while enrolled in school. I was having a hard time envisioning any other way out. At that time in my life I hadn't yet discovered Etsy and had zero knowledge about creating a creative business that made actual money. But yet, the whispers were battling my fears every step of the way: "You can do this, Kelly. Think about this creatively. How can you make money with your art?"

Just before moving to California and surrendering to the idea that I would likely have to get another fulltime job, I went to the mountains of North Carolina to visit my best friend, Gina. In the quiet and calm of those mountains and fresh air, my commitment to my passion and inspiration hit me and I wrote the following in my journal:

And that's what happened. We moved to California. I got a part-time social work job and I poured my energy into making money from selling my art, one small goal/step at a time. The sheer time and energy and hard work would have consumed me without the passion and commitment and the dreams buoying me to keep going. More on my specific journey later in the course, but for me, it came down to commitment. First, I had to listen to my whispers to start making art. Then I had to acknowledge the inspiration and the passion and the dreams of wanting to make a successful creative business. And then the missing piece, the thing that really set my creative biz life in motion, was the commitment, the promise to myself.

I'm asking you to do the same. You've already made a commitment by purchasing this ebook but make it in your heart. Before we dive into the how's of creating an online presence etc., etc, you must, must, must commit to the dream, to your vision of what you want your creative biz life to look like. Say it out loud. Write it down. Tell your family and friends. Have a little dorky ritual with yourself (they work!). Light a candle. Declare it from the mountaintops. Whatever you do...make one deep, heart–felt promise and commitment to this creative biz dream of yours despite the fulltime job, the fears, the to-do list, and everything else getting in the way. And the rest is one small step and goal after the next. The potential of your dreams, your goals, and your passion - they're all asking you to commit to their unfolding. Because there might just be a whole other life waiting for you.

(me, photo by tracey clark, script by ali edwards)

In essence, I've learned that there is something very powerful that happens when we simply acknowledge all of those creative biz dreams that tug at our sleeves. A shift occurs, our hearts expand, and our possibilities seem more accessible. Then, as we begin to lean into the passion and bravely commit to the dreams, a whole new world opens up, both externally (success) and internally (heart + soul). It's vitally important, if you want to have any kind of fulfilling creative business success, to 1) listen to your whispers along the way 2) have a passion for what you are doing and 3) have an absolute commitment to living the dream into reality. Without those three things, you won't have your very own heart and soul roadmap to guide you along the way.

up next: I'll share how I really feel about business plans and goals.

simple frame/photos diy idea

_MG_4887

i've been meaning to share this diy project with you guys for a while. i've only made this one, but i'm planning on doing a small collection of these all grouped together on the wall. we don't have a ton of table top areas in our house for various photo frames but i think this wall collection will be a great alternative.

it's super easy to do. just nail in sturdy ribbon to the back of an old architectual frame and clip your photos to the ribbon with clips (i bought the clips above at ikea in the curtain dept). super simple and cute, right?

shine brightly

(shine brightly - prints available soon)

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others" - from Marianne Williamson's book, A Return To Love

i will never be able to tell you how fully this quote, this idea, this belief has changed my life. there is no way i would be where i'm at now had i not deeply believed it with my whole heart. i invite you to do the same. we are all meant to shine, and to shine brightly - no dimming necessary.

the grands are moving to oregon

some of my favorite memories from childhood are those that involve spending time with my nana and granddad. we lived with them for awhile and when we weren't living with them, we were with them after school, on weekends. they were in my everyday life for what felt like many years. i remember them with their arms opened wide, their lives revolving around us kids. i remember feeling deeply loved in their presence - as if my walking into the room lit them up, made them happy. my other grandma lived far away but she'd spoil us rotten during our visits with chocolate, treats, and big giant hugs.

grandparents are so dear and special to their grandchildren.

and so, it is with the happiest space in my heart that i can announce that my parents, true's grandparents, are moving to portland in just a few months. they'll be settled in well before his first birthday. we are over the moon. it's a big move all the way from florida, but a long time dream in the making that is finally coming true for them. we are so happy. and i love that true will have his grands nearby to spoil him with love and attention and chocolate and adventures. he is one lucky soul.

As a special 'hello' to Kelly Rae readers, I'm offering 10% off till May 1st (Use the code = 'KELLY'). For more pictures and thoughts on my life as an expat, visit my blog Just Travelin' Through or you can connect with me on Facebook and Twitter.
