thoughts on transformation

IMG_2001 Butterfly ornament clips - Available here. I believe it's a time of transformation but I recognize that unfortunately, I won't wake up one day changed. I know the changes will be subtle. I'm consciously putting lotion on my body in the morning and at night. I'm drinking tea, I'm trying to get to bed earlier, I'm trying to eat before 9 every night mostly though, I'm trying to remember to practice everyday. Practice what I am wanting to bring more of into my life. Practice, kindness, confidence, creativity, love, vulnerability and generosity.

My friend Myriam sent these words over recently in an email. I read them over and over again, thinking to myself yes, yes, me too, me too.

Newish painting - matted/signed prints available here.
I have been so aware this past year since becoming a mama how sloooowwwly personal tranformation happens. While babies seem to speed toward milestones, growth, and change, my own personal transformation has been the opposite: from a life of moving super fast to a life of happily moving at a snails pace. Each day, the personal transformation movements are micro shifts. It's slow, deliberate, and powerful.

Lately, I've been noticing the transformation of my own life by the shifts in my perspective. I no longer have the kind of ambition I used to have. I'm cutting back on work projects in efforts to simplify. I'm not as bothered by the fact that it takes days and weeks to accomplish a single task. I'm working on  bringing more domestic craft in my life. I'm focusing on documenting every single day of remarkableness with baby True. I'm focusing, one tiny moment at at time, on bringing more personal pampering into my daily moments - lotion, candles, quiet, nesting.
true boots This all feels worlds different from my life one year ago, yet it's so hard to explain. It's a quiet transformation. A back to the basics transformation. A slow one. I suppose I'm slowly working my way back to the most simplest life I can live. One that focuses on the beauty of the everyday with my family. It goes by so fast. I want to continue slowing myself down so I don't miss a thing.

Transformation. I'm so thankful for the choices we get, every single day.

Hello!! I'm Stacey Curry of Star Hitched Wagon™ artisan goods for the Girl with Roots and Wings! I'm passionate about creating - can't imagine life without it. My parents inspired passion of creativity at a young age. Mom enjoyed baking, crocheting and ceramics and was wonderful about including my sisters and I. Dad let us create in the garage with his tools and scraps of wood. There wasn't a right or wrong way - they just let us do what we were inspired to do. So I feel I have always been creatively awake. I'm blessed. Lucky to be born and raised in rural Montana - the beauty of the plains and mountains fueled my creativity - I began designing and selling jewelry to family and friends at sixteen. I continued to cultivate my creativity and developed my own line featuring one-of-a-kind jewelry and handmade bath and body products. In 2003 I introduced this line to the world and a star was born. I am Helen Lewis, the artist and owner of Illuminating Words. I bring my love of letters and words -- both the visual aspect of their shape, and the beauty and impact of their meaning -- to my calligraphy, mixed-media collage, encaustic, and design work. I am fascinated with the curve of an E, the elegance of old script, the crisp look of type marching across a page. I love the stirring in my heart as I read a meaningful quotation or line from a poem.
In my pieces, I combine my own lettering and painting with various ephemera, including snippets from old books and dusty hymnals, treasured correspondence from earlier centuries, pieces of vintage sheet music or wallpaper, and character-filled faces from old photographs. Recently, I am particularly focused on the luminous qualities that the encaustic medium brings to the surface as these elements are layered and fused together.
Please stop by my shop or my blog to see samples of my artwork. Email me to inquire about commissioned pieces incorporating your favorite quotes or family photos.

November 11, 2011

tonight, tonight!

For those of you in the Portland, OR area, you are invited to my friend Melody Ross' art show in Camas. It's tonight! I'll be there celebrating Melody and her soulful art. Camas is about a 20 min drive from Portland - a cute little historic town. For those of you who can't make it, be sure to check out Melody's site. She runs the amazing Brave Girls Camp (with her awesome sister), is a fellow Demdaco artist, and owner of one extremely courageous spirit. Her story of rising up from major life challenges is inspiring and how she came through it is a testament to the strength of family and most importantly, true love.

Quick holiday shopping update: We've been getting lots of emails about whether or not we'll get more product in the shop before the holidays are over. The answer is no - what we have right now is all that we're going to have. Products are being scooped up at rapid pace with many items already sold out, so get your orders in. Thank you guys for the support. You are supporting one very thankful family. Truly.

Here are a few things that I particularly love - things I think would make awesome stocking stuffers or meaningful gifts (AND things we have in stock!)

coasters
These are awesome. Each coaster features a different image and the whole thing comes with this sweet coaster holder. I think these would be great to have at the office OR home!

biz card holders
These business card holders would make great small gifts for co-workers or stocking stuffers. Three different designs!

frames with easels Don't forget the frames. These two are my faves - they come with easels for displaying. Pop in a fave photo of a friend or family member - makes an awesome gift. And we've got several frames this year for the first time ever. Some are sold out, some art not. Love!

Have a great weekend everyone!

craft fair tour + vintage notions (awesome book)

I'm going to try and go to most of Portland's holiday craft fairs. I want to get inspired. I want to meet other Portland artists, mama crafters, and support local artisans. And I want to get out of my house (can I get an amen, other work from home moms?). Oh yes, and I want to introduce you to some pretty awesome people who are creating some pretty awesome goods.

Last weekend I headed to the All Saints Bazaar, the Abernethy Elementary School Craft Fair, + Milagros Crafty Mama Bazaar. SO MUCH FUN! I am constantly stunned at how many creative people live in this city. Here are a few that caught my eye last weekend (their etsy/online shops are indicated below!):

Craft fair loot!
Magpie Ethel. Oh my, loved her vintage, quirky, whimsical christmas creations. I went home with a couple of handmade trees, birdies, and flower tree clips. She's got a blog, and an etsy. My kind of lady.

New owl hat made by a crafty mama
A crafty mama makes these adorable owl hats. The minute True saw these, he said "whoo whoo!" They come in adult sizes, too! Here's her etsy site. And blog, too.

Trues new stuffie
Um, yes please. We're stocking up for Christmas gifts over here and this one was a must.  Loved her creatures. Every one of them. Dolls For Friends.

_MG_3393
Luna - She makes amazing clothes for kids and women. I bought the cutest, most comfortable birdie skirt ever from her last week. When True was a baby baby (above - chuckle!), we bought a few onesies from her, including the owl one seen here. Love, love. Man, I can't believe how quickly he's grown!

[image error] Other fun finds from the crafty show weekend:
-Seriously loved her ceramics. I think they would make lovely housewarming gifts or wedding, too. Super sweet.
- Her paintings were fresh and I loved her colors.

One more thing:
_MG_7828 Do you know Amy Barickman? I met her at The Creative Connection a couple of months ago when I stumbled upon her booth at the market. She was selling the cutest clothing patterns ever (I bought this one and this one) from her Indygo Junction line as well as her book, Vintage Notions. I've been stalking her ever since.

_MG_7830
In the last many months of my life I've been wanting to learn more about home arts: cooking, sewing, crafting, decorating, needlework, mending. When I say home arts, I'm thinking about slow, deliberate, meaningful work that we do with our hands, crafts often learned from those before us - our mothers, our grandmothers, our elderly friends + neighbors - and crafts that hold so much history and story that we pass them down to our children and to our grandchildren. I want that kind of art+craft in my life, in my family's history. Since becoming a mama, I think about these things. I really do!

And it's why I LOVE Amy's book.  As I continue to read through Vintage Notions, I keep coming back to what Amy herself says: As I researched this book, I was struck by the idea that "everything old is new again." We are once again interested in the domestic arts our grandmothers practiced daily. We take pride in thrift through refashioning and recycling. We look to live contentedly and graciously.
I couldn't agree more. This books gives me permission to slloooowww down and get cozy + crafty inside the nest of my home. And the best part? Each chapter represents a month of the year so you can work your way through, month by month, with generations old recipies, projects, and tips. It's like having a really savvy yet gentle grandmother tell you everything you need to know while illustrating it all with the most lovely drawings and sharing the history of it all through meaningful stories.
Friends, if you purchase one book this year, this is the book to purchase. It is beautifully done. I mean, beauty-full. Not only is the content awesome, but the cover is gorgeous, the inner pages are beautifully curated, designed, and showcase so many details -  a perfect gift for moms, grandmoms, and the younger generation that is interested and inspired by all things vintage + craft + home.

whippy cake is my new crush

Hands down,  one of my favorite finds this year has been Whippy Cake. They were a vendor at the TCC market place back in September and I went a little nuts (all of us girls did) trying on all the cute flowers in my hair, on my sweater, on my belt, and on and on. Needless to say, I went home with several clip on flowers. Best fashion decision ever.
Since then, I've been using the flowers to spruce up just about every outfit, everyday. If they're not in my hair (every flower has a clip AND velcro that can fasten to Whippy Cake headbands ---> genius! watch the quick demo video for more info), they're clipped on my cardigan, or my belt, or my hat, or my backpack, or or or. With just a few minutes to get dressed in the morning, they inspire me to quickly transform whatever it is I'm wearing with a bit of fun creativity - something I've deeply needed since becoming a mama.
Obsessed
ps: I just went to their site for the first time since buying their flowers at TCC and was so inspired by the owner's (Becki) short hair cut. Did I tell you I cut my hair last week? I did! And there is something that makes me love Whippy Cake even more after watching Becki share her hair styling tips in this video - there's something really sweet about it, I think. And I want her eye make-up, too. I think it's official: I've got a total girl crush.

pps: here's my new do:
New short do. Stacked in the back. This feels like me. Happy to have it chopped and cropped.
one more thing: friends, product in the online shop is selling out quickly. like, quickly. get your holiday gifts while you can. what we have in stock is all that we're going to have for the remainder of the year. can't thank you enough for the support - this has been our busiest season EVER and it's not even thanksgiving yet! thank you, thank you![image error]

kindness mission. are you in?

Been seeing these online and was inspired to create my own. Been putting them up around town. Awesome kindness mission!
Completely and totally inspired by this sign that I stumbled upon online, I decided to make some signs of my own - mine are a bit more artful/pretty but the original message is still so powerful just written on a piece of paper with a black pen, no?

True and I had the best time making color copies at Kinko's and heading around town putting these up in cafes, grocery stores, and more. I have to say, this is the best way to lift a tough mood, get inspired, and spread some love.

I say we all make signs like these and put them up in our neighborhoods, playgrounds, gyms, by atm machines, and on and on. Wouldn't that be awesome? If you do it, be sure to share yours on your blog - let's start a revolution. Because, you know, kindness changes everything.

ps: If you don't feel like making your own sign, feel free to download the one above that I made. Just click here to download the pdf, then just hit print, and off you go!

Speaking of kindness........
Meet Ashley. Writer. Inspirer. Crafter. Fashionista (hello, cute outfits!), and most importantly, owner of one very shiny heart. This girl is changing lives. I adore all that she is doing and I'd love it if you guys would go over to her site and flood her with some kindness.

She's on a mission to send some deserving students to college, all funded from her Shine Project. Her goal is to raise 20K by January, but I'm thinking we can help her raise more. Are you in? I'm in! I'm in!
Head on over to her site to learn more. Yay for kindness!

One more thing:
In our weekend sponsor post, we made a mistake and had an incorrect link for one of our new sponsors, Jennifer Rizzo. Her site is definitely one to check out (I've been a huge fan of her home decor for a long time), so please be sure to click over. Here's what she says about her biz:

My name is Jennifer Rizzo and I am a rediscovered artist. I've been drawing, painting and creating ever since I could remember. For a long time I had pushed my gifts aside and it's only been in the last few years that I've truly embraced them.

One of my passions is home décor and vintage items. I love to artfully create and find items that make a home beautiful and unique. In my shop I carry items such as tea towels, pillows, jewelry, vintage dishware and silver. Most of my items have a vintage flair. My Fall line is called The Vintage Tea Collection and I am so excited to be able to share it with you. You can view my collection at my Etsy store: Jennifer Rizzo or on my blog Jenniferrizzo.com

home tour - guest room! plus fave new product of 2011

Hi guys,
It's been over a year since we moved in and many many months since I've done a room tour but I thought it might be fun today if I showed you around our guest room. It's the same room where my office is inside the closet. It's also the room that had those amazing walls once we started scraping the wallpaper - ultimately we could not save the walls and ended up with new drywall and paint, but I still love this room.
_MG_7616 This is what you see when you walk into the room. It's my office, so I thought it might be nice to have a bit of my art on the walls! The daybed works perfectly as a nice place to take a break as well as a guest bed with a trundle. I found the light fixture at a flea market. The piece of cloth that you see on the bed is a vintage table cloth that I loved so much, I had to find a place to put it, so the bed it was!
[image error] Next to the bed is a bedside table my mom fashioned up with a chair, a suitcase, a tray, and some plants. She is so clever, my mom.
_MG_7620 One of my favorite things about this room is the curtain. It's a vintage twin sized bedspread that we attached to curtain clips. Love, love. I'm pretty sure that was another of my mom's clever ideas.

_MG_7612 Opposite the daybed is a dresser from my home decor line which I just love to pieces. The cabinet is really a closet for guests as the room's main closet is used as my office!
_MG_7630 Inside the closet is my office. More pics of my office are here.
[image error] When my office doors are shut (rarely the case), this is what you see. It's a large bookcase wall that we added to the room during the big remodeling process.

So there you have it! It seems so long ago (was it just a year ago?) that we were getting quickly settled in the house, waiting for baby to arrive. Oh my, SO MUCH has happened!

In other news, I am so excited to share these with you! These might take the cake for favorite new product of 2011, I love them so much!
[image error] big box LIGHTBOX 3 small photo book box LIGHTBOX I am over the moon in love with these unique wooden photo book boxes (two designs - one, two). Designed to look like a vintage book, yet functional as a box, while also featuring a favorite photo on the cover, I can't think of a more perfect design to hold cherished photos and mementos.
BOTH boxes LIGHTBOX As you can see from the photos above, I'm using ours to hold photos of baby True. The boxes are pretty deep and can hold a large stack of photos, papers, or other trinkets. Perfectly aged and distressed, the boxes are skillfully crafted from wood and features dimensional metal embellishments on their covers.

I think they would make amazing, thoughtful Christmas gifts (and yep, I know it's not even Thanksgiving yet, but I really am already thinking about Christmas). Available here and here. I'm hoping you love them as much as I do!

seriously inspired by Rachael Taylor

embrace change - affirmation 72dpi
So, remember when I told you that I signed up for Rachael Taylor's upcoming ecourse on how to create repeat patterns? It's been a dream of mine to learn how to create patterns that could possibly be turned into fabric designs and more, so I'm seriously looking forward to this course.

[image error] After hearing my excitement in that initial blog post I wrote, Rachael so kindly reached out and asked if she could use a couple of my paintings as examples in the upcoming ecourse on how to take an element out of a painting and drop it into a pattern concept. Above is the very quick result of extracting my butterfly image and creating a quick and dirty pattern concept - the first stages of creating a repeat pattern. HOLY SMOKES.Cushion-4-lo-res Is your heading spinning yet with possibility for your own paintings? When I saw these, I gasped! I can take elements out of my original paintings and create patterns? Oh my goodness, the possibilities...I have not been this inspired, creatively, in a long time. lo-res-web-PINK-Kelly-Rae And friends, what you see here is just the very basic, beginning stages of pattern building (not formal repeat patterns) that Rachael sent over to me to demonstrate what is even possible.  What you see is only step one. She will be going into more detail, building up these examples (and more) with more elements + dimension, demonstrating how to take it further with formal repeat patterns, and so much more in her upcoming ecourse. I was sold before, but after seeing these simple examples, I'm really sold.
I asked if I could share these with you all as I know many of you are interested in taking your paintings and creating patterns yourself. If so, consider taking Rachael's course and I'll see you in class! And no, I am not getting paid to gush about her ecourse. Quite simply, I like to share good finds with my friends. And this, my friends, is a good find. Class starts in less than two weeks!
