Celebrating Kindness

Kindness Missions are not-so-random acts of gratitude & love. Like writing a thank you note to your mom. Or sending 1,000 thank you notes to every teacher in your school district.  Every once in awhile we round up a few of the stories you guys send us and we post them here. They are always incredibly inspiring....thank you for being so kind and amazing.

KINDNESS MISSION #1: CONNECTING THE WORLD THROUGH 'HOLDING HANDS'

Kindness Warrior: Jean Bradbury

The Mission: Connect kids in American with kids in the Middle East and to create a fun and imaginative project for the Syrian refugee children, most of whom cannot attend school. I held an art workshop on the streets of Seattle showing children and grown ups how to make a large paper doll chain of their drawings. Everyone wrote notes of encouragement on the backs of the dolls like "We are thinking of you and send our love."

KINDNESS MISSION #2: KINDNESS BANDITS LEAVE CARDS ALL OVER TOWN!

Kindness Warrior: April Vince + her daughters (4 + 7 years old). They call themselves the Kindness Bandits! How cute is that!

The Mission: I came up with about 6 sayings, printed them up on pretty paper. The back reads 'Keep it for yourself or pass it on.' My two daughters helped put stickers on every one of them. I've been placing them anonymously at work and random places like the bathroom stalls and by the copier. I have a fellow co-worker that I've pulled into the mission as well! While grocery shopping my daughters and I place them all around the grocery store. They think it's neat that no one can know we are the ones doing it!! My daughters loved our first missions so much they are now creating and leaving their own notes.

KINDNESS MISSION #3: GIVING BLESSING BAGS TO THE HOMELESS!

Kindness Warrior: Stephanie Mullani of Natural Girl Diary

The Mission: I was inspired to do this act of kindness after driving around town with my kids and having them asking questions about homeless people. I wanted them to have the direct experience of giving and not just send money in an envelope to a charity. We make these blessings bags each year and give them away between Thanksgiving +Christmas and we never have any left. I found the original idea for a "blessings bag"on pinterest, so I can't take credit for that, but turning it into an annual family activity has been our thing for a few years now and it's been rewarding beyond measure. My kids get to see first hand how an act of kindness can make someone's day and their day is made in return!

KINDNESS MISSION #4: NOTES LEAD TO BIG TIPPING + PAYING FOR DINNER!

Kindness Warrior: Trinity MacRae of Divinely Inspired

The Mission: I created a sheet of mini cards with supportive and appreciative sayings on them. I tucked one in my little boy’s lunch box, we put one in an elevator and left a couple in our hotel room on a road trip but the most memorable experience was at a drive-through. My son, Mother and I pulled up to the cashier and as she extended her hand with our change I said, “No you keep it, and here’s a little thank you note too.” The look on her face was one of gratitude, and shock. “Really?” she said. “Thanks!” And then Mum suggested we pay for the next person’s meal. So, we did! As we pulled ahead looking over our shoulders we watched that same young lady trying to explain that his meal had just been taken care of. Away we went, hooting and hollering! It was just so much FUN: to give, to bring delight, and to share. We all had huge grins on our faces that night heading home.

Other kindness missions that caught our eye around the web: (a little link love)Christine Herman has been out there doing good in Wisconsin creating cards for teachers!

- BIG tears of joy watching this one! Ellen is the queen of kindness, isn't she!

- This couple, their story and this surprise  (again, from Ellen) has left me completely weepy and feeling deeply grateful. Proof positive that when we listen to each other, tell our stories and practice kindness it makes a difference.
- Melissa Johnson created absolutely beautiful cards and left them around town. We love that she left one on the treadmill at the gym! What a perfect place to receive a boost!

- LOVE hearing about big tippers
- Lisa Leonhardt in Switzerland created a take what you need sign in Swiss German. LOVE!

- Angela Miller's son, Noah, tragically died when he was 2 years old. She received an outpouring of love + support but one act of kindness stands out... a Costa Rican dancer named Maripili Araya heard about the story and had her dancers spell out Noah and sent it to Angela. This story made me cry - so beautiful.

Whew! How amazing are you guys? I feel inspired, and just downright happy. Thank you for creating such goodness in the world.
Warmly,Kelly Rae

Happy Holidays!

We may or may not have put the decorations out today. #newtradition #happythanksgiving Grateful for absolutely everything.
Somebody (hi mom) snuck a very awesome DIY reindeer on our front door when we weren't looking. #loveit #rednose #todayisfullofsurprises #feelingloved #merry
#hellojoy #polarexpress #trainride
I am home alone for a couple of hours. It's such a rare treat, I'm savoring every minute and capturing a few of my favorite scenes from around the house. #selfcare #quiet #loveourhome

Spent last evening in downtown Portland along with the other thousands of shoppers. Although I'm not usually fond of traffic and crowded places, I really enjoyed the energy and bustle if it all. #feltmagical
Treated myself to a doily dress the other day. Have always wanted one (thanks anthro - you make it easy to shop) and I'm loving it paired with purple tights and boots. Feeling #dressedupinjoy today. My intention for the day? To remain calm, centered, and

e-course filming sneak peek!

image
You guys, big things are happening this week. We're filming my upcoming painting e-course in my studio! Today was the first day of our three day shoot. Nervous. Hopeful. Stressed. Happy. Here's a little peek at the scene - lights, camera, action!
image
This is the back wall "set." I spent way tooo much time putting this together, but I'mloving how it turned out. I'm all in, friends. ALL IN.
Many of you have been wondering if there's a way to get the ecourse as a Christmas gift. Although we won't be ready to accept payments until the first week of January, we did whip up a very adorable "gift announcement" for those of you who either want to gift the ecourse to someone else OR want to be the person who receives the ecourse as the gift!
Check it out:

YAY! Loving this idea. Either click the gift announcement above or click right here to download the pdf, print it and off you go.
ps:  Found a heart just when I was thinking of it! #messagesfromtheuniverse #noticing #grateful
I found this heart the other day and thought I'd share it with you.  The funny part about this heart is that it appeared within seconds of thinking "I'm gonna look for a heart" as I was walking down the sidewalk toward my car, rushing from one place to the next. It was the perfect reminder to sloooowww down and take it all in. Breath. I think I'll add it to the collection

around here lately

Holy mess! This is the current view of mom's office where she is shipping out our print orders from the last couple of days! This is where all the action happens, friends! Thank you for your orders and support and for keeping us busy!
It's one of our busiest times of year for our little art shop. I thought I'd share a peek into my mom's office. This is where we do our printing and where mom does all the packaging, matting, and shipping of prints (and now postcard packs!). It doesn't always look like this, of course, but every now and again (sales, holidays, etc), there's a surge of activity. Holy mess! Seriously grateful for all the orders (thank you).

A #dragonfly decided to join the fun. #ilovemyjob
While mom's been busy in the printing studio, I've been working on deadlines alivelines. Loving the new birdies and dragonflies and other lovely creatures that have been emerging lately. I can sense a sort of new creative expansion happening lately. Feels really really good. In some ways, I can feel myself falling back in love with art-making and getting back to the roots of why I started making art in the first place a few short years ago. Love how everything is circular. Love how much I've learned about life through the journey that art has led me on. It just keeps changing my life.
#flow #mess #inspired #latergram

I've also been working crazy hard on prepping for my upcoming painting ecourse. Filming begins this week (this week!) which means I've been going cray cray with big pieces of papers on the wall, mapping it all out, over thinking, and generally making my nerves go haywire. I've been doing a dance with my inner perfectionista. I tell her all about the difference between excellence and perfection. I tell her we're going for excellence. And she breathes. Relaxes.
All I know is that I'm loving the energy and heart and soul going into this thing. Not just my heart/soul/energy, but for all of the lovely people who are helping me. Major team effort going on over here between filmographers, lighting folks, graphic designers, programmers, friends stepping in as project managers, make-up artists, stylists, techy consultants, and more. My heart is full.
Lovely evening with the #soulshinestudio ladies and their families at our house this eve. There was music, gifts for the littles, and so much life in our little bungalow. #mademesohappy I regrammed this from @florabowley @pixiecampbell @lynzeelynx
And my friends. They're holding space, and cheering me on. They are a big part of my life team. I think of that Ram Dass quote all the time: "We're all just walking each other home." Can't tell you how much I believe that. The friends who've been in our lives forever or just passing through - they usher us deeper into life and into light. I think it's remarkable.
So love this shot/moment of John showing True how the advent calendar works. The handmade calendar is from John's childhood, crafted by his mother and grandmother. #special
In between it all, the holidays are in full swing in our house. I adore this photo of John showing True how the advent calendar works. This was John's when he was a kid, so it's extra special that it will now be True's. How cute are they?
Rare snow day today in Portland and somebody was THRILLED. #trueelioorlando
And to make the season more merry, we got a day or so of snow - unusual for Portland, but we'll gladly take it for all the smiles and adventures it brings.
Adore this photo of True checking out his mama's art while wearing one of her aprons. #sigh #trueelioorlando Love having him at my studio.

And speaking of True, he's been coming down to the studio to paint while I work. I adore the above shot I captured of him checking out my art while wearing one of my aprons. Also loving this video of him going to town on a couple of canvases. Man, he's awesome.
Morning green smoothie time. #vitamixisthebestthingever and so is the insulated Summerville cup (thanks @curlygirldesign)
In between all the activity of late, I've been trying to practice some self compassion and care. I haven't been able to get to the gym the last couple of weeks, but I've been dedicated to getting enough sleep and eating well. Daily green smoothies continue! I feel great, and all the big lessons of burnout, over doing it, not getting enough rest, balance, etc these last several years are serving me now. I'm learning. Always, always.
Not gonna lie. This afternoon was rough. Through and through. Stopped to be thankful for all the abundance in my life (health, family, career, friends) but then it turns out I needed a good cry. And to come home from work to a sweet little tree and an und
And then there is our little Charlie Brown Christmas tree that we decorated on Thanksgiving day. Love, love, love.

Speaking of trees and family and friends, have I shown you guys this new image? A new favorite, inspired by vintage arithmetic trees - so much fun creating it.
More soon,XOKelly Rae

some thoughts on my word for 2014

#Thingsitellmyselfoften Finishing hearts today! #ilovemyjob
Been thinking a lot about what my word for 2014 will be. This year's word has been unleash . I wrote about declaring it as such here and it's actually been a really great word for me this year - lots of unleashing myself from untrue stories I tell myself, unleashing who I am from my "brand" (and not getting the two confused), but also lots of unleashing of creative joy and ideas. It's been a great word.

But as 2014 approaches, I've been thinking about the word I'll choose to guide me through the next 12 months. This morning, as I was driving toward a really busy work day, I considered having grace as my word. Sometimes, especially when life is full, I get  ahead of myself - in my thoughts, in my interactions, in my plans - and it all gets communicated in hurried, rushed, frenetic, not-so-graceful ways. I could definitely allow more room for grace in my life.

But then, as I thought more about it, the root of the hurried/frenetic pace comes from a deeper place of perhaps not trusting that all will be well. In some ways I have excellent trust - in divine timing, in the laws of the universe, in spiritual practice, in following my bliss - but when it comes to trusting others and myself on a much more practical level, I can struggle.

I can sense the my trust in myself is stronger than ever, but it's a muscle I need to strengthen - to lean further into the whispers and callings and trust my own voice and not betray myself in the big and small ways that we often do. And my trust in others is a big area for me that needs lots of nurturing.

Ohh yes, the more I sit here and write it out, the more I'm certain that trust will be my 2014 word. I'm trusting it is!

*** For those of you who aren't familiar with the One Little Word concept, you're in for a treat. I've been choosing words for the last many years, inspired by my friend Ali (instead of resolutions which can be self defeating) and it's changed my life.

Today I'm wearing the most cozy layers I own. This little tiny practice of intention and self care is especially helpful lately on these days feel especially full and fast. #thewearyourjoyproject (the #wearyourjoyproject continues to inspire me every morning!)
ps: two things:1. The holiday giveaway continues. Winners will be announced tomorrow! We experienced some slight techy difficulties yesterday that meant lots of your comments showed up on older blog posts. No worries! We are rounding them all up and counting them.
2. Thanks for the all the painting e-course love. I've been gobsmacked by the reaction and can barely contain my excitement. The waitlist will remain wide open until registration launches first week of Jan. It's gonna be amazing. My heart is full.
3. xo

ABOUT: The most transformative experience of my life was to learn to meditate. I love it so much I do it every day, and I teach it almost as often. I know you have tons of thoughts, but you don’t need superhuman powers of concentration to do it (though you might find them) and you don’t have to be spiritual (but you discover more love, creativity, and passion) and, you don’t have to clear your mind, for real, (though you might find you think more clearly.) Everyone can meditate, yes, even you.

I’m Sarah McLean. When I am not meditating I am teaching meditation to people just like you! I traveled the world by bike and taught Tibetan Buddhist nuns English, and learned about their practices, I lived in a Zen Buddhist Monastery, and an ashram in India I explored the monastic traditions of meditation so you don’t have to!

I was the education director for the Deepak Chopra’s Center for Wellbeing and now, I run the McLean Meditation Institute in Sedona, Arizona, where we demystify meditation while still giving you the good stuff. It's here. It's here. It's here. My first ever art e-course!

Friends,

I'm crazy excited (and a bit nervous) to announce that my first ever art e-course is finally coming. And soon. And you can join the wait list below, but first I have to tell you the whole story. Because I'm collector of moments and I believe the stories of how things come to life matter.

Back in 2010, when I was considering launching my first ever e-course, I asked you guys what you wanted: an art e-course or a business e-course? I was six months pregnant with True at the time and I knew I could only squeeze in enough energy and time for one e-course. It turned out that you guys wanted the art e-course a tad more than the biz e-course.

I tuned inward, asked myself which direction called me the most and the answer was clear: the business e-course. It was during a time in my life when my little art business was soaring in big ways and I was feeling passionate about sharing everything I had learned along the way. Because I'm a firm believer in following our whispers for a gazillion reasons, I went with the biz e-course.

And I'm so glad I did.

I ran it once in 2010, once in 2011, and for the last time in 2012 before turning the content into e-books that get updated yearly. In the last three years, thousands of people have either taken the e-course or bought the e-books. Choosing to run the biz e-course changed my life. And it's been a game changer for my fellow Possibilitarians who want to start or grow their creative biz. Grateful.

Fast forward three years.

I deeply believe in the process of divine timing. I always knew I'd offer an art e-course, but I've been waiting for my heart to leap at the thought of it. I needed the whispers and my inspiration to say now is the time, now is the time. And they have, friends. Now is most definitely the time.

I am so excited to introduce my next heart + soul e-course......

Nearly all of my paintings include an uplifting word or phrase — sometimes called a “mantra.”

People often ask me how I "come up" with all those mantras.

And honestly?

They're usually just words that my heart needs to hear, in that moment.

So, I come up with them … by tuning into my heart.

And now, it’s your turn.

With Hello Soul, Hello Mixed Media Mantras , I'll help you create a mantra (or two, or three, or four) that speaks to your soul — and then we're going to paint them into life using all of my beloved and easy mixed media techniques. Hello paint, paper, ink, and getting beautifully messy with our hands.

Whether you're new to the world of mixed-media painting (like I was just a few short years ago!) or have been at it for years, this e-course will inspire you to create meaningful, richly layered paintings that speak directly to your heart. I will walk you through every step, side by side.

It's important for me to say that this will not be just another project based e-course about creating a painting. It will be much deeper and more soulful than that. I'll not only share my techniques with you, but also soul-stirring stories about what I've learned these last few years as I've stepped into the creative life. There's a lot of beautiful metaphors and life lessons that emerge when you face a blank canvas and work with it until the finished beauty emerges. We'll be exploring all of those life-teaching morsels as well. Heart + soul + techniques. That's how I roll. And I'd love for you to roll with me.

And did I mention the community? The community that will bloom from this experience will be life-changing, too. I'm an artist, but I'm also (as one friend cleverly put it) a Connectress. When I bring people together (online or otherwise), big things happen. I can't explain it - it's just he power of creative synchronicity. And community.

I'd love it if you joined me in what I know will be a beautiful, meaningful experience. For me, and for you.

Registration will launch the first week of Jan, and our virtual classroom doors will open on Feb 24th.

(Click anywhere in the image except in the center where the Pinterest "P" is)
Because I'm expecting boatloads of gorgeous souls (hello, tribe!) who will want to embark on this journey with me, I'm creating a wait list for the class. If you'd like to join the wait list and be the first to know when registration opens (and receive a discount for class tuition), please click here to join the list.

Seriously, friends. I can't wait to see a big gallery of everybody's completed mantras paintings. Holy boots. I'm kinda weepy, just thinking about it.

XO,
Kelly Rae

ps: Got questions? Feel free to post them in the comments and I'll be happy to answer, but full details (including price, length of class, how many videos, etc etc will be announced when registration opens in Jan.)

pps: It's been a long time since I've put my heart out into the world in this way. Honestly, I'm incredibly nervous, excited, and reminded how important it is to answer our calls and be brave. Can't thank you enough (especially those of you who have been a part of my community since the beginning) for all the support. I heart you.

Can I just say how highly delightful these key chains are! Love the double-sided medallions. Love the mix of ribbons. Love how they look clipped onto tote bags, purses, and backpacks - the tiniest bit of artful love. This one reads 'a charming life' on one side and 'no dimming necessary, shine brightly on the other.' See it here.

LOVE these chunky artisan bracelets! Each features 6 different signature images, adding just the right amount of artful soul to you accessory collection. They're a stretchy 8" long and slip on easily for maximum style and comfort. Shine is right over here.  See the full line of Chunky Artwork Bracelets right here.

The LED candle collection is so lovely! Shine is among my favorites! I love the idea of a candle that will burn brightly and never fade! They are 100% safe for little hands and wagging tails, but still have the look (and feel) of an actual candle that flickers. Tip: I place mine up high (like on a mantel) where they flicker but yet their LEDness is concealed by being placed up high. See the Shine LED right here.

Thanks, friends. Our mission is to continue to create products that blend creativity with meaning, beauty with function. I so love what I do.
Warmly,
Kelly Rae
