Rob Howell is the best-selling creator of the Shijuren fantasy setting and an author in the Four Horsemen Universe. He writes primarily high fantasy, space opera, military science fiction, and alternate history, usually with mystery mixed into it all.

He is a reformed medieval academic, a former IT professional, and a retired soda jerk.

His parents discovered quickly books were the only way to keep Rob quiet. Without books, it’s unlikely all three would have survived.

You can find him online at: www.robhowell.org, on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/-/e/B00X95LBB0, and his blog at www.robhowell.org/blog.

Generally speaking, three things, all basically designed to free my mind to let it do its thing.

One, I try to have five or more things in process at once. That way when I get stuck with one I have others that I can work on.

Two, take a shower. Silly as it sounds, for me my mind comes up with a bunch of ideas. Plus, it's relaxing.

Three, I drive to a bunch of events. If I keep having problems with a story, I will have times during the drive where my mind is especially creative. I have a voice recorder on my phone that I record whatever comes to mind. Then, when I have a chance to listen to it, I do two things. One, cringe at hearing my voice. Two, see where those random ideas take me. (less)

Rob’s Update: At the P-Con Bar

Week 39 of 2025

Greetings all!

I had a great time at P-Con! Thanks to Crystal and the crew for all their hard work.

I went with a variety of plans. First, I needed to recharge a bit with my crew. I saw a bunch of great people, including a huge contingent of Raconteur Press folks. More on them in a bit.

I was on 4 panels. One was a discussion of what fans are increasingly asking for, and that’s more ac

“It was arranged like a drunk triangle. None of the walls were straight. Each had some odd angle, and most had two. Tables and benches lined each section, and a long one stretched down the middle.”
