Are We Really Millennials?
I’m very confused.
People have assigned a date range for the Millenial Generation, but I’m still very confused.
Like why is Ellen bringing children on her show and giving them a “what a millennial eye roll” when they don’t know what a boom box is?
I HAD A BOOM BOX!
I asked for a boom box!
And I used to listen to Coolio’s edited Gangsta’s Paradise CD on it after my dad listened to it first, of course. And I had a Spice Girls CD. And a Joe Diffie CD and the Soundtrack to Sister...

I’m Scared
I met our neighbor for the first time a few days ago.
I found myself rambling on and on about my husband. I told him he worked at the University. About how we’re from a small town. About how we’ve been married for 8 years. And how he played basketball in college and professionally. And for one of the toughest (and winningest) college coaches of all-time.
I talked about how he comes in late most nights because of work. That traveling with his team brings him home in the early hours of the...

Hold You
I saw it happen before it happened. I saw it in slow motion. I looked into the future and saw your foot tuck under and your sweet little head make contact with the table, and still, I was one step too late.
I scoop you into my arms and fixate on the swelling just above the bridge of your nose. I hold you in front of me assessing and cataloguing. Memorizing the location and size of the welp transforming into a lump right before my eyes.
Blood pounds in my ears and my inner voice murmurs in ...

My Son: May 6th, 2020
My son doesnt look like Ahmaud Arbery.
His eyes are a light, buttery brown. His skin is lighter, warm and tawny, but still darker than my own. My sons hair isnt black like Ahmaud Arberys. Instead his dark brown curls twist and loop away from his scalp towards the sky.
But to a certain type of person, Ahmaud Arbery and my son do look the same. In fact, to this type of person, all black men look EXACTLY THE SAME.
On May 6th, 2020 I found out about Ahmaud Arbery. On May 6th, 2020 I picked up a...

Good Ol’ Boys
I know what some of you think when you hear this phrase. I know the connotation, and the baggage that comes with it. I know what some people think about men from the South, but if I could, Id like to tell you something about the southern boys I know.
Theyre the ones we hunted Easter eggs with, and sat next to on the bus ride home.
Theyre the ones who still let us play football, even though all the other girls had moved on to gossip on the swings.
The ones who let us borrow their skateboards...

Friends Like These…
Every 3-4 months for the last five years Ive traveled to the best cancer hospital in the world.
In the first few years my husband and/or dad went to every appointment. As the diagnosis became reality, I started to make the trip alone.
But Ive never really been alone.
Theres a text message that goes on behind the scenes. An entire web of communication Im not privy to. Except its not a web but a net, just in case the news is bad. Theyre waiting, ready to catch me if I fall.
As I get older I...

Coaches’ Wives
When your husband is a coach you hear different stories. The ones not in the social media videos. The ones that don’t make the articles. The stories aren’t always flashy. They don’t always have a happy ending or make for a great sound bite. Sometimes they’re tough to hear.
Some stories are so hard they take a little bit of you with them, but it’s also why you are able to root for these young men on a different level.
You help with homework and bake birthday cakes. You save leftovers at...
