A Forest on Fire
A rabbit ran swiftly through the woods, yelling at the top of its lungs, “The dragon started a fire, the dragon started a fire!” One by one, all the beasts of the land and feathered creatures of the air, the scaled fish in the lakes and rivers, as well as the trees and flowers, heard the call. They were divided by its suddenness, abruptness. The added uncertainty it brought to an already disturbed forest that was attempting to heal from an outbreak of plague. Every day, like clockwork, instead of the rooster heralding the dawn, the ‘wee wabbit’ ran from one side of the woods to the other, proclaiming, “The dragon started a fire, the dragon started a fire!” Meanwhile, the plague kept several forest-denizens distracted, much effort was being expended to clean their homes of sickliness and cremate their dead. Then one day, the rabbit stopped running. On that same day, the dragon soared above the canopies and declared, “The rabbit was lying all along. It was not the fire that killed it, but the plague. It refused to listen when I insisted it stay in its cubby hole until the disease passed.” What the forest-denizens did not see was that the dragon had devoured the rabbit and hid all connections to the fire that lit the fuse that blew the well that unleased the plague. The dragon knew that a trembling forest permitted more power over its residents. If the dragon wished to eat plenty – and oh, this dragon truly did wish so – it had to ensure that as much prey as possible stood still. After all, the dragon found a way to heal swifter from the plague. After all, it was the dragon that unleashed it in the first place.
