Next Generation Erotica

Although the election drama is the gift that keeps on giving (sarcasm here), I promised I would return to more light-hearted blogs…so…welcome to my return to one of my favorite topics. This past week, I saw Nancy Ann Healy’s post on a vibrator called, Little Bird that syncs with erotica books. Of course, I just had to Google that because, damn, I wanted to check that little baby out for myself. What a wonderful way to enjoy erotica!

E. Sensory is the French company that debuted Little Bird back in 2016 as the world’s first smart vibrator linked to their special library of erotic e-books. I wonder what constitutes a dumb vibrator? Apparently, all you need to do is shake your e-reader and then no shit, caress or a blow on the screen, and bam up pops the text which triggers the Little Bird’s vibrations as you read the story. Well, hello there, sign me up!

Since the choice for erotica is limited, I had to research whether there were any lesbian or WLW erotica books available. I went so far as to try to download the B.Sensory App onto my iPad. Much to my dismay, I learned the app was removed from the Apple Store. Wah, wah, wah. Apparently, the company never quite got their product out there, but I did find a competitor.

I sent a direct message to my friend Paris Rivera who writes Lesbian and WLW erotica (she has audio options). I thought this would be a new revenue stream for her and increase her sales at least tenfold. So here’s my plea…all you authors who write lesbian and WLW erotica, please contact Vibease because I want more options before I even think about buying this device that looks more like a teenager’s phone from the seventies, than a proper vibrator!

I may not write pure erotica, but have on occasion ventured into steamy sex scenes after pushing myself to branch out a bit and answer a few challenges from readers! If you want to check out my books, feel free to click the links below. Pleasure Workers is probably my steamiest.

Is it Love?

Heart palpitations. Pacing the floor, mumbling to yourself. Acting like a complete fool as you stare at the object of your obsession. My palms begin to sweat. There are a lot more than butterflies moving around in my stomach. I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. I’m up all night waiting for those three little words. I can hardly breathe. My obsession teases me, taking me to the edge every night, an excruciatingly slow build up in anticipation of blessed release. My eyes are glued to my obsession. I check my phone and iPad every two minutes hoping to hear something, anything from my obsession.

Although I’m still waiting to hear those three little words, fortunately I heard the other three words from my wife nearly seventeen years ago. Love is much better than this current feeling because it mellows and ages well like a good wine. Unfortunately, I don’t believe the results of this election will feel as good, especially if the aftermath brings what we all fear…continued divisiveness and unrest. My only hope is that like love, this will eventually mellow over the months and years to follow.

Hang in there everyone and be patient! Because love is patient. In the meantime, feel free to grab a good book and chill. One of mine if you’d like! Click one of the links below.

A Collective Breath

In four short days, there is the possibility that the world will hear the collective exhale in the United States. Our face might look like that map of the electorate that CNN has been showing for weeks, Red, Purple, Blue, until finally we’re able to breathe again and not have to see the map for four more years.

There’s a lot that keeps me up at night, and has ever since our nation started traveling this path. Even if democracy prevails, there is a real possibility that our nation will be sent into chaos. I don’t believe we will have a lame duck president after the election. When a narcissistic sociopath who has shown his vindictive side holds the highest office in the land, there is a lot he can do in two and a half short months. Will we heal after he’s done his best to ignite his base, fire all the civil servants who aren’t loyalists, challenge every state he loses in court, actively torpedo the economy, and work against keeping the pandemic from continuing to bring unparalleled death? Yes, I believe we will.

After I exhale, I will finally be able to return to more light-hearted blogs about silly things like bras and vibrators. And, the readers can hopefully look forward to reading again and hopefully checking out my books which have a decidedly lighter tone than some of my blogs of late. If you want to check them out when you exhale, feel free to click the links below.

Here We Go Again…

For my own sanity, I chose to receive the news that the Pope is advocating for civil unions for same sex couples as a positive sign. That is not to say I don’t recognize how civil unions are different from marriage. Many states tried to play that game and we all lost until the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision that clarified all the complications for states with differing laws. I am not naïve enough to fail to understand the double standard of separate but equal in reality means we aren’t equal AT ALL. Haven’t we played that game before? But even with this hopeful news, I am extremely nervous about the future of same sex marriage and honestly my own marriage.

We will survive if this basic human right is ripped from us, but we won’t be happy. Sure, we will go back to that lawyer to ensure everything is ticked and tocked to protect us, but how will we regain that emotional benefit. A legal document will not compare to our marriage license and the ceremony we had 5 years ago.

Once again, I cannot resist getting political. It’s too important. If you aren’t bothered by my need to speak up and want to learn a little more about my books…feel free to check out the links below! I would be so pleased!

Unhealthy Relationships

This past week I had an epiphany…I am one of those. Despite my protestations that I would never remain in an unhealthy, abusive, co-dependent, relationship, I find myself willingly forgiving my demon spawn, Nico. Sure, he isn’t a partner or spouse…remember I’m a lesbian. Nico is my beloved black cat.

Many of you may already know that he attacked me on Saturday and got me good. I am still feeling the consequences of his attack. Although my wrist is much better after six days of antibiotics, it is still sore. Like an abusive relationship, Nico operates in cycles. Most of the time, he is a loving companion. But for whatever reason, he’ll start purring and licking my face, give me that loving look, and then bam, he begins to bite and scratch. In the past, I’ve simply pushed him off the couch or bed and then he comes crawling back an hour or two later doing his best to make it up to me because he knows I’m mad at him.

Sound familiar? I was aghast to realize this is the cycle of violence and I am a willing participant. On this occasion, his first five efforts to make it up to me were brushed aside. Mostly because I was still in so much pain. He kept trying. He knew he’d crossed the line. His version of flowers and an apology was licks to the face, purring, and an extended paw. Finally, I relented.

Of course my relationship with my cat is different than with a partner or spouse because he is dependent on me. Having lived his whole life mostly as an indoor cat, he can’t hunt for his own food. He would never survive out there. Thus, I’ll need to find a way to get him to change his bad behavior because the alternative is a no go with me.

All joking aside, domestic violence is a serious problem in our society and I implore anyone in this situation to seek help. Domestic violence shelters are often on the top of the list of charities I support. And, don’t be so sure it doesn’t happen in the LGBTQ+ community, because it does. Here is an astounding fact: persons in the LBGTQ+ community fall victim to domestic violence at an equal or even greater rate compared to their heterosexual counterparts.

https://ncadv.org/blog/posts/domestic-violence-and-the-lgbtq-community

Bringing this topic back to writing, I’ve also realized that I have an unhealthy relationship to all my manuscripts. During editing, I begin hating them, then I capitulate and allow them a bit of grace. By the final review, when I am ready to send to betas, I hate them again. Before publishing, I get to the point where I say, maybe this one isn’t so bad after all. So, if you want to see what you’re missing….check out the links below!

Flipping is Good

As spitting nails mad as I am at Lindsey Graham for flip flopping on his very public position of not putting forth a Supreme Court candidate in the final year of a Presidency, I can think of other instances where it has been good. And, let’s be honest, both sides of the isle do it whenever it is convenient to their political career. I hate that, but it is politics.

Sometimes, those political flip flops make sense because without them, we would not progress as a nation. Probably the most famous flip flop was when Abraham Lincoln broke his promise with the Emancipation Proclamation and launched the civil war when the south seceded. Originally he stated in his inaugural address that sending federal troops within the states would be the “gravest of errors”.

Another famous flip was Franklin D. Roosevelt who campaigned on promises to roll back federal spending and cut extraneous government agencies. Then came the new deal. Thankfully, he proudly stated that he would try new things if old ideas didn’t work. And, frankly, the new deal worked.

Thank the Goddess for those white supremacist haters who flipped their positions like Derek Black and Megan Phelps-Roper (I’ve written about her below is a part of her Ted Talk). This gives me hope that the craziness in our country will eventually flip again.

Flipping the Senate will be incredible and I am seriously counting on that happening. Even if we have to add more Supreme Court seats or introduce term limits, I hope we will eventually even out the inevitable acutely lopsided Supreme Court. Politics is unfortunately about flipping antiquated views because we learn that what we are doing is simply not working. For all the regression our country has recently undergone, we simply cannot continue down this path. If we don’t flip the pancake, it will burn. Can you smell the smoke? It’s time to flip and let the pendulum swing once again. The fires in the West should be a wake up call to everyone, along with all the other hints that Mother Nature is royally pissed and we need to flip before it is too late.

I am honestly depending on self-preservation, good old fashioned protests, and social upheaval to ensure our country gets back on track. Even if we have to suffer through the kind of flip flopping hypocrisy coming out of the right, let’s cheer on whatever good flipping is in the cards for this country down the road. We simply have to let our voices be heard. Come November, let the flipping begin! And now, to flip to my standard promo…click the links below to check out my books!

Lady Grimm Anthology…Boo!

I am so pleased to announce that yesterday the Lady Grimm Anthology, a collection of stories from thirteen (hopefully a lucky number in this instance) best selling WLW authors went on pre-sale. The official release date is October 8th, and y’all are not going to want to miss this awesome collection.

I figured what better way to entice all of you than sharing 13 snippets to tease you into submission! Without further ado here they are:

With emphasis spoken upon each word, the voice said again, “It is time, Char.”

She didn’t want to. In fact, she willed herself not to yet it still happened. Her head turned and rested on the woman who stood barefoot leaning against the bent post. Her slender, dark-chocolate arms were exposed with the black tank she wore. They were adorned with tightly wound leather gris gris. “Vini jwenn mwen,” she said. —The Calling of Serafine by CD Cain

The cold alerted me at first. My brain suggested I’d left a window open, but I only had one of those and it was in the bathroom and tiny, so I pulled the blanket closer around my shoulders.

“Wake up!”

My eyes flew open. The last puff of air from the words washed over my skin as I stared into a pale face. It was so close that I couldn’t see beyond the eyes; black like scorched earth. — The Price of Pleasure by KJ

Chase pulled off the side of the wooded, country road, and Jamie squinted as she peered through the trees. Even with her glasses, she couldn’t see anything noteworthy. But somewhere through that wilderness was a cave with a potential miracle mold inside. And maybe a place to pee. She really should have gone when they passed the Miscellaneous Everything store ten miles back. — Sample 27 by Serena J. Bishop

Marcella backed away from the table. She held one finger from each hand in the shape of a cross between herself and Shannon. “No. Don’t go. Isla de arañas is bad place.” She turned her back to them, hustled toward the hostess stand, and whispered into the hostess’s ear while pointing back toward their table.

“What was that all about?” Becky asked.

“I don’t know,” Shannon said. “What did she call it, isla de something. Do you know what that means?”

Becky’s face twisted into a scowl. “I’m not sure, my Spanish isn’t that good, but I think it means the island of spiders.” — Spider Island by Ocean

“You call it state’s rights, I call it slavery. This house is named after a traitor to the Army and to his country who believed in slavery over all else.”  — Midnight Slain in Georgia by Anne Hagan

In retrospect, sitting mostly-naked in the girls’ locker room listening to the senior class president lament about the breakup of her third marriage was not something I had on my High School Reunion Bingo Card, but then again, neither was nearly dying in a bridge collapse. — Bad Moon Rising by Lila Bruce

Staring up at the enormous old Victorian hotel, I realize this might be the most depressing place I’ve ever been. It’s white, or at least it must have been white in its glory days. Now, it’s stained by the weather and years of corrosion. A swing is hanging down from a big, dead sycamore tree next to it, and the way it moves in the wind unsettles me. Its back-and-forth sway is too static, too fast to be natural, and it makes my heart beat so violently I can feel it in my throat.

Emma glances at it for a moment when I point it out, then shakes her head. “It’s just the wind.” She doesn’t stop walking and neither do I. Now that I’m close, it’s like I’m being drawn to the building, my curiosity winning over my fear. — The Grand Malum by Lise Gold

I was beginning to unpack, when I heard a knock at the front door of the cabin. I skipped down the stairs, excited to meet my new housemate. Veronica made it to the door before me and when she opened it, I was stopped dead in my tracks. It was her. I could never forget that strawberry blonde hair and light skin sprinkled with freckles. Even after seven years, she still looked exactly the same, albeit more mature and a bit more developed. But there was no denying that it was her. I could never forget Summer Burke, no matter how hard I tried. And, boy, had I tried. —Ex Rated by Erica Lee

The noise started, rumbling up the drive, chains rattling and horse hooves pounding to the beat of her heart. Determined to put a stop to the shenanigans, Vanity ran out the front door as the sound stopped at the hen house and threw all her chickens off their roosts. She didn’t run to the chicken coop. She ran to the front gate. She planned to be waiting for the culprits when they came down the drive. Vanity was halfway to the gate when she heard the sound bearing down on her. She drew her gun and turned to face the menace. To her amazement nothing was there. Nothing at all. —Haunting Vanity by Erin Wade

Bree looked up at the striking woman holding the kitten and asked, “Can I pet the kitten, please?”

“You can. This is Onyx, and he only bites rats. You’re not a rat, are you?”

Sadie pushed her small body forward. “Does he eat bats? I’m a Batwoman.”

The woman smiled, and her gleaming white fangs were both beautiful and alarming to Val. “Nope, only rats, and I only bite bad guys. Are any of you bad?”

“Sometimes people say my mommy is a total badass,” Bree offered as an explanation. — Witches and Vampires and Shifters, Oh My by Annette Mori

As they came up the steps of the porch, they sniffed. The horrific smell turned off like a faucet, and the same delicate, sweet smell teased their nostrils. Then they noticed her. She sat with her back turned, rocking slowly as twisted, aged fingers wrapped around the end of the armrest with long fingernails carving into the wood. Her once amber hair thinned on the top of her head with her scalp glistening in the heat. She hummed a soft tune to the beat of the wind and faced the fields where the skies darkened and lightning struck. Emma stepped forward but got stopped by her words. “There’s a storm coming. The sunflowers need feeding.” The elder’s head twisted, causing Emma to stumble back into Jo. Old eyes covered in white film stared in her direction, but they never met Emma’s. Not until a tilt of the head, a lift of the chin, and the old woman’s eyes bore into Emma’s soul.  The woman spoke again, “You best get inside. They’re hungry tonight. They saw you watching them, Emma.” —The Town of Sunflower Fields by LL Shelton

The moon shone down, and there was plenty of light on her darkened balcony to see Quinn watching her closely. “You said you’ve seen Cat People. But, I’m a big wuss and never watched any horror flicks after being scared shitless by The Shining when I was young. When I met Irene a year and a half ago, I had no clue that I would get caught up in some eerily parallel version of that movie myself. — Cat People by Elle Hyden

Looking in the mirror behind the bar, I take in the scene behind me. The place is festive with ghouls, vampires, princesses, and superheroes. Then, off to the left, something catches the corner of my eye. Looking harder, I see a man in black standing at the edge of one of the larger groups. Or at least I assume it’s a man from the height of him and the breadth of his shoulders, but I can’t be entirely sure. His face is under a mask so black it gives the appearance he has no face at all. It’s a good costume, albeit simple. The outfit is nothing too flashy or overdone. Just black. Maybe that’s why it works so well because I feel a nervous tightening in my stomach as I look at him. Although he appears to be engaged in conversation with someone in the group, there is something I find unsettling about his appearance. Can a costume be too scary? As if he feels my stare, the stranger looks over to meet my eyes in the mirror, and although I quickly avert my gaze, I know it is not quick enough. — Anniversary by KC Luck

Uncomfortably Numb…

In my Sophomore year of college Pink Floyd’s, The Wall, came out and if memory serves correct, I received that album as a gift. By the time my roommate and I started playing the album over and over, we were both professional stoners and like one of the songs almost always comfortably numb.

Every single time this administration does something outrageous, we may take to the streets, yell at the television, post a rant on Facebook or twitter, write a blog, hell, write a book sometimes, and in some cases donate money to the political opponents in the hope of removing that uncomfortable despair we feel. The problem is that we are doing this so often, we’ve become uncomfortably numb to the atrocities.

Some of you may say atrocities is a very strong word, but what other word would you use when Trump says something like this:

“He got hit on the knee with a canister of tear gas, and he went down, he was down, my knee, my knee, nobody cared, these guys didn’t care, they moved him aside (laughter from the crowd), just walked right through it, it was the most beautiful thing (crowd cheers and laughs)….” The reporter was actually hit by a rubber bullet.“You have good genes, you know that right? You have good genes. A lot of it is about the genes, isn’t it, don’t you believe? The racehorse theory. You think we’re so different? You have good genes in Minnesota.” This was said to a mostly white, non-mask wearing crowd. The next step of course is to declare Trump followers, the “master race”.“I don’t know that she said that, or was that written out by Adam Schiff, and Schumer and Pelosi. I would be more inclined to the second, okay? That sounds like a Schumer deal or maybe a Pelosi or shifty Schiff. So that came out of the wind. I mean, maybe she did and maybe she didn’t.” This said in reference to RGB’s last wishes before she was even buried.Naming only democratic cities “anarchist” and threatening to withhold federal funding (remember the threat to sanctuary cities), the Trump Administration once again tries to do unspeakable things.Let’s not forget the famous, ” I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters, okay? It’s like incredible…” The sad truth is that it probably an accurate statement. In answer to a question about a peaceful transfer of power, his stock phrase of, “Well, we’re going to have to see what happens,” came out.

All the above quotes have created over 1/2 a nation of uncomfortably numb individuals. This is our new normal. We don’t like it, but other than momentary bouts of activism where we speak out, protest, give money, write blogs or books, we are left with no tangible change.

I urge everyone to push through the discomfort and not allow yourselves to go uncomfortably numb. Keep writing those blogs, tweeting and posting on Facebook taking to the streets in protest, donating money if you can, helping others get to the polls or registering to vote, and by God, vote, please vote.

Every time I hear the advice to remain apolitical because it may affect book sales, I want to scream in frustration because the stakes right now are simply too high to give a shit about that (not that I ever really cared much beyond making sure my publisher doesn’t lose money on my books). I have to do everything I can to fight for our rights…how can I not? Recently, I posted that all of my royalties for One Shot at Love will go to candidates that will help flip the Senate and put Biden/Harris in office. I am pushing myself every day to stay fired up. If you can help and get a great book in the process, I hope you will consider buying One Shot at Love. Every little bit helps.

Superheroes

This past week I’ve been binge watching The Boys, an Amazon Prime series with an interesting premise. The twist to the series is representing superheroes as extremely flawed beings. The revelation on why they are so flawed comes about later in the series. However, I was stuck on how villainous the series made most of the core of superheroes.

So far, the least repulsive of the group are the two females, who are later joined by a third. One happens to be a closeted lesbian, who is flawed, but I believe represented in a way that makes the audience root for her. The other is almost a true superhero but definitely lacks the requisite backbone to fit the bill. And then there is the third female who joins the seven and at first, I was thinking oh yeah, finally a badass to really root for, only to have my hopes dashed in an epic fashion. She ends up being right up there with the lead psychopath in utter repulsiveness. What fascinated me most was how the superheroes were so human in their various flaws. Ultimately everything ends up making sense, but at first we are shocked that superheroes can be so human. Sometimes we are also shocked when beloved characters in a book are so human as well. We want them to be superheroes without special abilities.

This got to me thinking about books and how authors choose to represent their main characters. Most readers want the characters to be flawed so growth is shown by the end of the novel. However, the character can’t be too flawed or they run the risk of being unlikable. I’ve seen critiques on both sides. Either the character is too perfect, or they’re too flawed, even if those flaws are pretty standard in the “real” world. People don’t stand up to their shitty girlfriends, or they let pride get in the way and let “the one” go without a fight. Sometimes the character says something mean out of anger or frustration and that is a step too far when the other main character is more likable.

Lesfic or WLW books have their list of acceptable flaws. The heart-broken woman who sleeps around without a care because they are too afraid to trust is a popular one. The shy, nerdy girl who has zero self esteem and lets everyone run over her until the “right” one comes along to help her see her value is another one. The ice queen who is a total bitch because of various scenarios growing up and then finds the perfect woman to thaw her bitchy core is probably one of the most acceptable flawed characters.

Recently, I wrote a book where I made the mistake of making the characters a little unbalanced. One is so lovable that it was hard to bring the other character up to her level. I made some edits to try to breach the gap, but I probably didn’t do enough. As I thought long and hard on this, I decided I wanted her to be more human, less perfect. Because that is life. We are all flawed, yet that does not mean we are not deserving of love. I decided that despite her flaws, she deserved the love of the other character. Or maybe I was just too lazy to do any major edits! Yup, I am very flawed.

Often there is an imbalance in relationships because it is hard to achieve a perfect balance. If a couple stays together long enough, the balance will shift. That is the true nature of relationships. I sure feel that imbalance sometimes because my wife spoils me. I’d like to think I make up for it on occasion. Maybe I did that when I spent three hours cooking to prepare for an upcoming RV trip so we have food to take with us.

Just Google It

Lately, I’ve been conducting a shit-ton of research on Google. Y’all are probably cheering right now…or maybe not…thinking I am writing again. Sadly, I’m not. Google research has become my second favorite pastime during the pandemic. See, I’ve been reading a lot…books, news, Facebook posts, conspiracy theories (for laughs), etc. I’ve also shared my free time with watching Nexflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, etc. In the middle of a sentence or a show I’m watching I hit the pause button or flip over to a new page on my iPad to Google when a particular topic sparks my interest based on what I’m reading or viewing.

Lately, this has taken me to sites about Demon Sperm, Anne Lister, Empathetic Transference, and my favorite….Delay Wipes. I don’t know if all these topics should be capitalized or not, but I thought they definitely should based on either how interesting they were or their giggle appeal. Y’all really don’t want to know about Demon Sperm. And, I am quite sure I am late to the party watching Gentlemen Jack, so I’ll skip over Anne Lister as well. That leaves me with Delay Wipes and Empathetic Transference.

I was reading someone’s post about Delay Wipes and I just had to look them up. Are the wipes designed to delay contracting COVID-19 by doing a half-assed job of cleaning your kitchen surface? Nope. These are wipes for men who want to delay ejaculation. Seriously, that’s what they are for. Can you imagine picking them up on error because all the disinfectant wipes are gone and then swiping your counters with them? Ew. Shutter. Google this. I dare you!

The other search on Empathetic Transference was a lot more interesting. I was reading KJ’s book The Art of Magic (great book by the way) and I just had to Google this concept that she wrote about. I really wanted this to be a real thing. I even searched for an article noted in the book hoping it was real. I couldn’t find it. But…and this is important…that doesn’t mean it does not exist. I don’t wish to give too much away about KJ’s book so I won’t tell you much more about it. Although, like her character in the book, I did have fun with my Google research on the topic.

My latest WIP (Sculpting her Heart) had a beta reader doing her own Google search and I consider that a big win. The search was for biting during sex. I’ll just let that one sit with y’all. One of these days I will return to writing and my Google research won’t be about extraneous topics that spark my interest mid-sentence or mid-show. In the meantime, I believe most people who read my books get the sense that I do a shit-ton of research and hopefully it shows. Want to check my books out, you know the drill.
