Hello and Goodbye: 2011

04 - Keane - Everybody's changing

Powered by mp3skull.com

When it comes right down to it, I hate change. I like things to be steady, predictable. I like, for example, that I can go to Cafe 28 in Linden Hills around 3:00 for a late lunch and have the same waitress and the same delicious sandwich with a delicious coke and fries. Today we went for one last fried egg sandwich because the restaurant lost its lease and today is the last day they'll be open. I hate change.

It could be just the end of the year but it feels like there's a lot changing around me and I just don't feel the same about a lot of things--it's not exactly restless it's just knowing that in one way or another I'm on the edge of either a hello or a goodbye, or (as is usually the case) a little of both.

One notch on the side for goodbyes: thanks to everyone at Cafe 28, especially Nicole and Russ, for making it such a great place to sit with Huey and a good book and good food. I always enjoyed seeing your friendly faces and I'll miss this little corner of the world. Thank you!

Around the World in 30 Days

The month of December I logged over 25, 244 airmiles on just eight different flights. Considering it's 24,906 miles around the earth I did pretty well for one month, eh?

One More Flight

One last look at the coast before heading home for awhile.

Piece of a City

I started doing 24 hour trips to cities when I discovered you could stay a year or live in a city your whole life and you'll still miss whole parts of the city. I figured out how to do 24 hour trips to Dubai, London, Australia, and Amsterdam to name just a few. Even if I just spent 5 hours on the ground in Amsterdam I still experienced a slice of Amsterdam, right? Maybe the one slice someone sees every. single. day.

What made me think of this was that last night we went to the bar that's in the movie Top Gun. In all the years I've been going to San Diego or lived in San Diego this is one sight I never thought I'd see or even thought to see. And now? Mark it off the list. I've seen a whole new side of San Diego.

Left Bank Books!

Hooray! Left Bank Books in St. Louis is carrying Lost Edens on their shelves, now. Very exciting! If you're in St. Louis you can stop by and say hello to a copy.

Thanks to the folks at Left Bank Books for making my day!

Sunny San Diego

One thing I'm remembering about being a San Diego local is that it's so darn hard to be working when it seems everyone around you is playing. I worked at the edge of the San Diego Zoo and could walk home so a walk home for lunch simply punctuated the fact that there were people just outside my office who were on vacation, enjoying the sights, enjoying the weather.

Now that I'm back in San Diego and working really, really long days, it's hard to look out the window and see the sparkling water. I have to admit, I kind of like winters in Minnesota when you have nothing to do but buckle down and get work done. (We'll see if I still feel that way after it snows!)

Coronado Bridge in the distance!

View from Seat 36A

On the ground in Minneapolis.
Enroute. Midwest-ish.
Enroute. Colorado-ish.
