Top 100: Dysfunctional Relationships

Hilarious. Lost Edens is currently (blink and you'll miss it!) in the top 100 books sold on amazon.com under the category "dysfunctional relationships." Number 99 to be exact (still top 100!).

Must now write a book that can be listed under "heartwarming" or "joyful."

Buen Camino

I've written before about my fascination with the Camino de Santiago. Today I stumbled across a film, The Way, about one man's journey on the Camino and Dash, my dad, and I went to a funny little theater in not-quite-the-ghetto to watch. The popcorn scooper was also the projectionist so the film started a bit late but there were no previews, no commercials. Just us, the film, and the slight mildew scent of the old (old!) theater.

This film is right up there with Like Crazy for a favorite film of the last few months. If The Way is actually playing in a theater-near-you then it comes highly recommended (even if you don't have an existing fascination with the Camino--although you might after seeing the film!).

Hey There Sunshine Lift my Heart

I think Minneapolis these days is a nice change of pace, and I think you'd agree.

Golf courses were open this week (in January!). Had to use a hammer to get the tee in the frozen ground but people were out there. I managed a run without hat or gloves and could have done without the jacket. The bike paths are open for crying out loud (no snow! No ice!).

Never the city you'd expect.

Funny, but I've been trying to get away from it as long as I can remember. Brothers and sister, too. London, Tokyo, Hawaii, Ghana, California, Chicago. Big jumps. All under the illusion that we get to choose. I wonder if you always end up back at the beginning in one way or another?

Blogger in the Beginning

For those of you itching for a blog break check out my aunt's new blog: www.wehaveenoughstuff.com . She's tracking a year of not buying anything new. She's still going to shop but it will be all second-hand stuff.

I love it already!

Just for the Record

And for those of us in Ghana and Atsugi--it's 50 degrees in Minneapolis today. This isn't Minneapolis in January, apparently.

(This all must be for you, Jeni. There couldn't be a better first Minneapolis winter!)

The view of a melting snowman in my parents' front yard. I turned around after taking this picture and was handed the mail by the postman who was in short-sleeves. Life is good. I like to believe we earned a winter like this after last year!

Supporting Indie Bookstores

One last note and then I really am taking a blogging break (really!).

One of my new year's resolutions (see below) is to avoid Amazon.com in favor of indie sellers. Two really good reasons: buying from an indie bookstore supports a small business and is also the best way to support the author.

Amazon is absolutely terrific because the distribution is global and is the easiest way for a reader to find and purchase a book, but the benefits of Amazon really kind of end there. So if you're thinking of buying Lost Edens, check out this link and consider buying from an independent seller.

Hitting the Wall

Well, I've gone and done it. Hit the blogging wall. It was a pretty good 7 or 8 month run there since the blog started in April and a whopping good time at times. I'm going to be sure to update on NSFY and anything related to Lost Edens but I'll be bowing out now just for a bit. If I can make it to June 19 without getting kicked out of school I'll be a doctor (call me doctor, doctor) and I think I'll need to work pretty hard to be a good friend and family member in whatever spare time I have between now and then.

If you found yourself here via the Lost Edens website, welcome! Take a look around. I've posted a bit about the publishing process and will be posting more specifically related to the personal and financial costs of the process I went through once I get my taxes sorted. So for now, happy new year. I'll be back around soon.

Resolutions

A quick update on NSFY and resolutions for 2012 seems in order as we begin the new year. Other than items on the exception list I still haven't been shopping and now I'm down to just five months to go. I'm thinking, though, that instead of shopping on June 12, 2012 I just might begin a new endeavor to eliminate all unessential spending.

I was even thinking no books for a year and instead support my local libraries. We'll see if I can take it that far. Maybe I'll instead make a resolution to only shop at indie bookstores and eschew Amazon. Any which way, I'm really, really enjoying not shopping. (Who would have thought it?)

As for my resolutions, they're rather simple: read two books per month (this is for my mental health), graduate (for my financial health), and run at least one marathon (health in general).

Here's to 2012!
