What I Want For You After Reading Crushing It!
When I was a kid making straight Ds and I got caught reading baseball card catalogs in class so I’d know how much to charge for trades, everyone said, “You’re going to be a loser.” Today they’d say, “You’re going to be the next Mark Zuckerberg.” When it comes to professional opportunities, this is the best time to be alive in the history of humankind and I don’t want anyone to waste it.
And so, if you take away anything valuable or helpful from this book, I hope you will give a copy to someone you care about who might not be happy with his or her current situation but that you know has it in them to make a change. If you are a parent, please give it to your children as they start to imagine what and who they want to be. There’s teachings in this book that no classroom will provide. And I say this not because I want to sell more books. Get it from the library for all I care. I say this because I want everyone to know that these opportunities exist, so that if someone is struggling or miserable or scared, they can absolutely do something to change that.
Life is short; its brevity and unpredictability is the one thing that scares me. It is also long; a fifty year-old could still look forward to another thirty, forty, or even fifty productive years. We owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to be as fulfilled and thrilled as possible so we are able to share our best selves with each other. There is so much in life that is uncontrollable, but our happiness doesn’t have to be, nor do our careers. We can have all the control. Every damn bit of it. The sooner we realize that, the better off everyone will be.
So if you’re earning what you need to live the life you want and loving every day of it, you’re crushing it. And that’s all I want for you. I think of the friends I grew up with who loved video games but whose parents forced them to stop playing because the games distracted them from their studies. Those kids may have grown up to make a decent enough living but only by getting by with something they tolerate, or even hate. If only their parents could have seen how the world would evolve. Maybe the child who became a lawyer to please his or her parents could be earning the same amount now as an eSports (competitive gaming) promoter—or even earning millions as a professional e-gamer. Either way, it’s very likely that lawyer would be infinitely happier.
Parents are trying to get their children off Pokémon Go when augmented reality gaming is going to be huge for generations. They think their daughters should make less slime and do more algebra instead. And sure, slime may be a fad but it could also serve as the conduit through which a girl learns the dynamics of supply and demand on the Internet and builds a million dollar personal brand and company.
The crazy thing is that she wouldn’t be the first. Karina Garcia did it. She used to be a waitress; now she’s a successful YouTube star famous for making, you guessed it, slime. How successful? With six figure earnings every month, she was able to retire her parents.
In August 2017 she took a seven week, fourteen city tour to meet her fans. People paid $40.00 to $99.99 for VIP passes. Stories like that are no longer uncommon, and they illustrate why we need to give our children as much freedom as possible to gravitate toward what they love doing. Because in their world, nothing will be off limits when it comes to how you can make a living.
Are you going to be part of the revolution?
My hope is that Crushing It! will be the inspiration and strategy for you to understand how it’s not only possible, but practical to do the same.
Thanks for reading

Permission!
For those of you that came here from page 121 of Crushing It! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your time and attention. Nothing matters more to me than the consumption of this mission, which has been a decade’s long journey since my first book Crush It! put me on the map in 2009. Whether you bought the book, or stole a copy from bitTorrent or came from a URL that was shared on the internet
From Crush It! to Crushing It! What Changed Since My First Book
A lot has changed since I wrote Crush It!, but surprisingly, a lot hasn’t. Anyone who follows me regularly knows she can fast forward through the first ten minutes of my keynote speeches, because I’m just going to repeat the facts of my life and my opinion of the world in pretty much the exact same way that I have been doing for almost a decade. Once those ten minutes are up, though, you never know.
And that’s what I’m going to share in this book—the part of the keynote that changes every six to nine months because that’s how frequently the platforms evolve. I want you to learn the most up-to-date information on how to best leverage the platforms of our digital world to create powerful, lasting businesses and brands.
The biggest difference between my first book Crush It! In 2009 and the one you’re reading now is this: my voice isn’t the only one you’ll be hearing from

Making Every Minute Count .. And Documenting it While You Do | Veecap
This was a crazy day even by my standards.. I talked about how to raise money, spent time on the teenage expo podcast, delivered my insights on parenting, got interviewed by ABC, met with an up-and-coming artist, gave advice to a big influencer, talked about investing, did a final run through for Agent2021, met with a teacher, did an interview for Cheddar and managed a few pivotal 1:1’s with some close employees. It was a pretty epic day and hopefully illustrates some of what I mean by making sure every minute counts.
But the thing is, and what I have been thinking about through this Veecap is the unbelievable practicality of documenting vs. creating. God forbid the advice I gave to Toney Jackson at the end of the episode about seizing his moment and having the mental model to say “yes” instead of “no” might just be the unlock that changes his, or your* career.
More of you need to get comfortable with allowing others to know what you are up to in work and life. It’s my paramount thesis of no matter who you are or what you do, your job is to tell your story and document vs create is the way to get there. Every single day I meet entrepreneurs and executives and artists who complain that they don’t have the infrastructure to produce content around what they do. They tell me that they need there own “Drock” or “Babin” or “Iris” and it’s just not true.
You don’t need a fucking Drock. Look at the beginning of this episode. My videographer for the day wasn’t with me that morning because my schedule changed so I pulled out my iphone and went straight to face. I documented with what I had. I run a 150M dollar agency on a smartphone. You all have the resources that you need!
And the beauty of it all is that when you document every moment you have a catalogue of content that can be relevant today and in 5 years when it all really happens. It’s fun to look back and see what I said before it became “real.” It’s fun to look at how I’ve made predictions about the rise of audio and voice, or influencer marketing, or social media itself 10 years ago.
And my hope is that some of the insights in these episodes and meetings and rants can actually help 1 or 2 of you. By documenting my life I’m giving you an inside look into the exact conversation that went down with me and an artist or me and another entrepreneur.
Whether that be my thoughts on parenting or just simply how I conduct business for real.
Documenting your journey versus creating an image of yourself is the difference between saying “You should…” versus “my intuition says…” because my actions reflect. Get it? It changes everything. I believe that the people who are willing to discuss their journeys instead of trying to front themselves as the “next big thing” are really going to win.
Starting is the most important part and the biggest hurdle that most people are facing. They’re pondering and strategizing instead of making. They’re debating what’s going to happen when they haven’t even looked at what’s in front of them.
Just go out and record. I promise it will help you start.

The Best Spotify Playlist to Start Your Week – ‘Monday to Monday’ by GaryVee
VaynerNation,
This is a big one.
I’ve launched a public Spotify playlist called ‘Monday to Monday.’ Each week, Mike Boyd and I create a playlist exclusively on Spotify that includes 15 new tracks to showcase what I’m listening to and think you should be listening to. It’s the perfect way for me to show love to up-and-coming artists and pay my respects to the classic hip-hop legends I grew up with. I review and approve every playlist before it goes live and do my best to spend time with these artists at VaynerMedia or in the studio when I can. If you aren’t familiar with my lifelong love and respect for hip-hop, take a quick second to watch my meetings with A$AP Ferg, A-Boogie, Logic, Russ, Kyle, T-Pain, GoldLink, Jeezy, Redman, Nipsey Hussle, Big K.R.I.T., Rich the Kid and smaller artists like Yung Bans and Anik Khan.
This playlist is meant to showcase hot new artists and some who have already cemented their place in the music world. You’ll find household names from Future to Kendrick and up-and-coming musicians like Gunna, Lil Baby, Gashi and more. The playlist is primarily hip-hop with some pop, R&B, indie rock, international hits, and classics thrown in to mix it up. Whether you think we are “qualified” to talk about music or not, doesn’t matter. The intent is to share interesting content in a new way around a subject we love. My POV will continue to be honest and my attention to detail ruthless because this playlist is super important to me. As an entrepreneur that has spent every second of my career reverse engineering where consumer attention actually is, there’s no doubt to me that music–hip hop primarily–plays a massive role in shaping culture, how we behave, and what we consume.

Meeting With Jeezy About Buying Dying Brands to Flip for Millions | Veecap
Nostalgia is underpriced. That’s my biggest thesis. Whether you are a rapper, or an entrepreneur or anyone in culture who has attention, the biggest opportunity is bringing what used to be cool, back.
Ask yourself: What used to be cool when you were growing up? What products, brands, ideas, sneakers, clothing, food was that “thing” in culture. What did you grow up wearing, what did you grow up eating? What brands did you really love, that you would be willing to revitalize through whatever your “machine” is in society, be that music, or entrepreneurship or athleticism and make it cool again. That’s where the opportunity is.
The reason I’m building VaynerMedia is so that I can buy old brands and run them through my “culture machine” and turn a 150M dollar business into 1BN company through the same tactics of reverse engineering consumer attention and understanding how to make products and ideas relevant to the end consumer.
Plain and simple, the leverage is going to be with the people who have the attention. The reason I was so pumped to sit down with Jeezy was because he has “it.” He has the attention and the pulse of culture and even more importantly, he views the world not only as an artist, but as an entrepreneur who is about to do something big.
All the leverage, and I mean all the leverage, is coming to the people with the attention because the internet became the middleman. Now you don’t need the help of Walmart or Target or Best Buy to put you on. You can make a product and go direct to consumer if you have the audience. You can disrupt the whole game if you just understand the reality of how we communicate and purchase and connect on these new platforms.
That’s why there’s so much opportunity. If you can build the leverage and the influence and the network, and you’re willing to keep playing the game for the next 40 years and continue building, then you will win. The greatest thing about business is that while athletes get slower, entrepreneurs get smarter. If you actually have the tentacles (i.e the reach and impact) in your genre, then you have real potential to win.
And the biggest thing to realize is that you don’t have to do it alone. There are plenty of other wealthy individuals who have either capital, awareness, or both, that can help. You don’t have to own the whole thing. You can own 20% with 8 other homies and still make a killing. You don’t make “real” economics from Instagram posts. You make real economics from building businesses and creating an arbitrage around your thing.
I hope this episode illuminates something for you and I’m excited to see where Jeezy takes his legacy next.
Thanks for reading
