The New Terrorists

We are all much too familiar with terrorists. They are far too busy killing people these days. We’re all sick of it. We are sick of the senseless killing, the false claims of religious authority disguising raw ambition for power. We are sick of them trying to gain power by frightening us.

Well, guess what: there is a whole new group of terrorists out there. You may have seen them and not even been aware of it. But I’ve seen them. I recognize them for what they are. Just last week they got up on stage with national tv coverage and to scare us all by ranting about Islamic terrorists–how they are coming here in their thousands to kill us in our homes. One after the other the speakers at the Republican National Convention got up on stage and told us to be afraid–be very afraid.

They want us to be afraid so we will give them power. They want us to be afraid so we will do what they say. Sure, they don’t kill people in their lust for power. They don’t have to. The “other” terrorists will do that for them. But they will magnify and exploit our natural fear of the “other” terrorists to gain power. They are the worst terrorists of all–the kind that pretend to have our interests at heart, but will say anything–do anything–to get that power they crave.

When I started this blog I promised myself I would stay non-political. Since the nomination of Donald Trump as the presidential candidate of the Republican party I can no longer keep that promise. I saw people supporting his candidacy while saying he didn’t really mean the terrible things he said. I saw the gutless toadies of the Republican get up one by one to support and propagate his message of fear and hate–and I was afraid. I was afraid that the thinking people of this country would stand by and let this fear mongering crowd of terrorists have their way.

I still am. You should be too.

Police shootings

OK. Everybody is getting pretty sick of police shooting. I guess this last one really pushed me over the edge. I suppose it is because the victim works in the same field I do–mental health–and was shot while doing his job. In addition, when he was shot he was laying on the ground with his hands in the air. This may be the most outrageous police shooting incident yet.

Interestingly, after he was shot in the leg he asked the cop, “Why did you shoot me?”

The cop responded, “I don’t know.” His attorney says he was shooting at the victim’s autistic client. If this is true, it does not make the situation better.

I’m not going to list all the things that are wrong with this scenario. I’ll leave that for you to decide. But I will suggest some solutions

When you have a pattern like this it means your whole society is sick. To change that it will take a comprehensive two pronged approach.

Certainly, our leaders need to change the way police are hired and trained. I think at this point everybody understands that. Here’s the part that most people miss: A society is made up of individuals. The attitudes and beliefs of each individual define that society. An individual may feel powerless to change society, but only you can change you.

So if you want to change any aspect of our sick society, look within. Drop your judgmental thinking. Be inclusive–it’s not “us vs them”, it’s all us. Do this in spite of your fears. Actually listen to the needs and concerns of your fellow human beings. Let go of beliefs not supported by facts. Cultivate an attitude of compassion and gratitude.

I know that most people don’t like to look within. People don’t think they need to change anything about themselves. People are afraid. Well, guess what: If the events in our society scare you, buckle in because it is going to get worse. It’s going to get worse until a “critical mass” of individuals change.

You decide.

New Job

This post is kind of a “news about me” thing. I am pleased to announce that I have taken a job. I am the new Program Director of Spiritwood, which is a 4-bed adult foster home owned by Prairie Community Services.

I must admit that it feels good to be working with clients again. It seems I will be working with a good staff and a good company. Apparently this is where the universe wants me, so I’ll give it a go.

Another Book Review

My second review is for “Oak” by Angela B. Mortimer. I am liking this author. Her work is imaginative and, in the end, hopeful.

Oak is a delightful mystery within a mystery. First we have the murder mystery—a young woman found in a small British village. We see the story through the eyes of Detective Chief Inspector Michael Campion, who finds the quaint village of St. Athelstan a bit creepy at first; but soon begins to feel very comfortable. Then the second mystery starts to unfold and the rest of the world gets pulled in.

It all moves to a surprising conclusion that is both frightening and hopeful. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery.

A Book Review

During my time as an author I have learned that there are a lot of good books out there that don’t get the attention they deserve. This includes my books, but since I am already doing everything I can think of to get my books attention I thought I’d try to help some of my fellow authors. To that end I have decided to post reviews from time to time.

Today I will review “Round and Round the Hill, by Angela B. Mortimer. I gave this book 5 stars.

Round and Round the Hill is an engaging read. This tension filled tale has a unique approach to the fairy world and those living in it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys an imaginative tale.

Check it out on Amazon
