Southern Caribbean Cruising — Puerto Limón; Setting out on foot

Before we leave Vargas Park, let’s take a quick gander at a colorful local vender of refreshments:

Looking for something a bit chillier? How about this for a treat:

We left behind the park and started heading west, I believe on Ángel Miquel Velázquez. About three blocks west of Vargas Park this becomes a pedestrian shopping street:

The vendors in ...

Southern Caribbean Cruising — Puerto Limón, Costa Rica

Our destination aboard Grandeur of the Seas on 28 February this year was Puerto Limón, the capital city of Limón Province in the Central American country of Costa Rica. Limón is the seventh largest Costa Rican city with a population just barely over 61,000.

While there’s a lot to take in visually here in Limón, there’s not a lot to discuss in such a small city. As such, this week and next will be heavy on the photos and light o...

Southern Caribbean Cruising — Grenada; the Inner Harbour

Garfield St. Louis offered to drop us off closer to port, but Ursula and I wanted to see more of St. George’s before we headed back. So, Garfield dropped us off at a suitable location with plenty of directions to get us started. We began with a quick trip to Market Square (see above), which had a very few items of interest. We didn’t spend much time here. But, if you’re looking for spices, you might want to give Market Square a try. We already had ours from a vendor to which Garfield took us...

Southern Caribbean Cruising — Grenada; View of St. George’s from Richmond Hill

On the way back into St. George’s, our wonderful guide Garfield St. Louis detoured us to Richmond Hill for some great views from high above the capital city. We parked adjacent to Her Majesty’s Prison. Perched above us was Fort Frederick, which you see above. But the interesting features lay below us, such as this view of Grenada’s House of Parliament located east of St. George’s:

In the upper left corner of this next photo you can make out Fort George....

Southern Caribbean Cruising — Grenada; touring the island

The fellow you see above is a Mona monkey, which were introduced to Grenada from Ghana. You can find these guys in the forest, and I’ll tell you in a few moments where we encountered this cute, friendly fellow. But first I left you hanging on Monday with our visit to Annandale Waterfall & Forest Park. So, here is Annandale Waterfall:

By now Garfield St. Louis was driving us high into the mountainous interior to Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve. Here we woul...

Southern Caribbean Cruising — Grenada

Okay, it’s true. I skipped around a bit to encompass the ABC Islands in one long series. But now I’m back to covering other Southern Caribbean destinations we hit beyond that. This week and next I’ll show you the island of Grenada in the Windward Islands of the West Indies. This was our view from Grandeur of the Seas when we docked in the capital city of St. George’s:

At around 8:40 a.m. on 22 February 2022 we disembarked and headed toward town.

Southern Caribbean Cruising — ABC Islands; Curaçao, a Sunnier Afternoon for Better Photos

You may have noticed in this series on Willemstad, Curaçao that the cloudiness in the morning was far from ideal for picture taking. Fortunately, that condition did not hold throughout the day. Today’s photographs of were taken beginning at 3:55 p.m. in the afternoon, beginning with the photo above of the Koningin Julianabrug (Queen Juliana Bridge). This colossally tall bridge spans Sint Anna Bay, and reaches heights of 185 feet/56.4 meters. The rest of today...
