Utrecht, Netherlands — Part 2

Today I will make good on my promise from Monday — less talk and more photos. And today’s pictorial offerings will concentrate on the historic city center and canals.

Large swathes for these 900-year-old canals were paved over back in 1979 for a highway, but in 2019 Utrecht tore up that section and restored the canal system. The result, I’m sure, is much more photogenic than looking at multiple lanes ...

Utrecht, Netherlands — Part 1

I‘m going to try something a bit different over the next four weeks. I’m going to let my photos of Utrecht carry the burden while keep text to a minimum. I’m doing this for the following reasons:
There’s not much needed to describe this charming destination. The sights are centered around the canals, which is near where we stayed, and the photos speak for themselves. As I write this, I’m pressed to pre-post a bunch of articles before we head to our next adventure, ...

End of the Road for the Best Striker-Fired Polymer Pistol Ever Devised

The Walther P99 AS died in 2021. Or was it 2022? Many sources site the former year, but I’ve recently seen one P99 AS with a CC date code, which translates to 2022. Or did the P99 AS die this year? In February, while Ursula and I were on our most recent travels, Walther announced the “Final Edition” of what is, in my view, the best striker-fired polymer-framed pistol ever devised. And that’s a real shame, but not unexpected. Walther has bee...

Avoiding Dangerous Advice from Self-Proclaimed Firearms “Experts” on Facebook (or elsewhere on the web)

I only recently returned from a month abroad. During that time, I had an interesting thing happen to me; I was banned from a Facebook group devoted to a specific prestige line of firearms marketed by a higher end manufacturer. It all started when an owner asked about lubricating a specific point on his firearm. A group moderator deleted my response. My offense? Giving advice consistent with the owner’s manual. The o...

Mystery Monday Book Review — Neptune’s Ridge by William Florence

My good friend, and fellow mystery author, William Florence has done it again. He has produced yet another superlative mystery novel for his Max Blake Mystery series, this time aboard the cruise ship Bonanza. This adventure is book nine in a series of entertaining and fun novels, and it’s titled Neptune’s Ridge. Indeed, every Max Blake/Caeli Brown mystery Bill writes has “Ridge” somewhere in the title. Bill also has a series of Max Blake Westerns, but...

Fun Food Friday — Schnitzel at Gashaus Burgkeller; Limburg, Germany

After a busy morning of sightseeing, it was time for the three of us to stop for lunch. We’d seen several possibilities along the, but this rustic place had convinced us to come back and give it a try. So, trekking back into Old Town to where Domstrasse T-bones into Fischmarkt, we found our way back to Gasthaus Burgkeller. The actual address is Fischmarkt 10, in case you’re wondering… or wandering, as the case may be. Whichever it is, we can hig...

A Day in Limburg an der Lahn, Germany — Meandering Around Town Part 2

As I indicated in Monday’s article on Limburg, Germany, I’m going to be brief on the text this week and let the photographs taken on 24 May 2022 do most of the speaking. And to give you an idea how much there is to see and photograph in the medieval portion of this charming city, I’m captioning the time the photos were taken so you can get a feel for how quickly scenery comes up on you as you walk the streets here.

A Day in Limburg an der Lahn, Germany — Meandering Around Town Part 1

Today and Wednesday I’m just going to show off the sights around Old Town Limburg, Germany. Consider it a continuation of what we started on Monday two weeks ago with A Day in Limberg an der Lahn, Germany — Going Medieval on Foot and continuing through last week. As you may recall, following our second of back-to-back cruises aboard Vision of the Seas, we flew to Germany to spend time with our daughter and her family. This side trip was a brief...
