Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Touring Nordkapphallen

Don’t expect to get a shot without a crowd

Today we explore the Northkapphallen (North Cape Vistors Center), starting with the photographic star of the show, the North Cape Globe. You’ll have to get close and wait for a break between selfies to get a shot of this sculpture without people in it. And even then, expect to get heads bobbing along the bottom of the photo:

Nearby is the visitors center, (Nordkapphallen) which includes a wonderful gift shop with reasonable pricin...

Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Nordkapphallen (North Cape Vistors Center)

Nordkapp at 71º 10′ 21″ North Latitude

We’re now at our northernmost point in this excursion from Honningsvåg. We’ve reached the Nordkapphallen, otherwise known as the North Cape Vistors Center. We reached Nordkapphallen on 25 June 2022. So, just how north are we? The Arctic Circle is denoted on maps at 66º 34′ North, and Nordkapp reaches almost 5º beyond that — at 71º 10′ 21″ North. Since the summer solstice for 2022 began just the day before, we’re up here at a time during which the sun wil...

Tufjordhøyda Rocks

Today’s Fun Photo Friday contains favorites taken of Tufjordhøyda and Skarsvåg. Next week it’s time to head even farther north, Nordkapphallen — the North Cape Visitors Center at 71º 10′ 21″ North Latitude.

Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Skarsvåg and Red King Crab

Farming red king crab in Skarsvåg

Back when I was in the United States Air Force, I had a control tower chief who would routinely admonish us controllers that, “You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken guano.” Okay. I cleaned that up just a wee bit. He didn’t really use the word salad. (Got ya!) At any rate, as I mentioned in Monday’s article, red king crab is an invasive species in Norway that has the potential to devastate the fishing industry here. But at least some locals are trying to...

Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Skarsvåg via Tufjordhøyda

Norwegian Wool on the Hoof at Tufjordhøyda

We got back on the tour bus and left Kamøyvær for another small village farther north, Skarsvåg. But before we would arrive there we would pass through a magical place called Tufjordhøyda. In English this is known as the Aurora Lights View Parking area, and the surrounding countryside makes this a worthy stop even in broad daylight with zero chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). I posted the picture below at higher-than-normal resol...

Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Touring Kamøyvær on Foot

What happens to Billy Big Mouth when he refuses to shut up

Today it’s just a simple foot tour around Kamøyvær. There’s really not much to add to Monday’s text, so I’ll just present photographs of this wonderfully picturesque village and save my favorites for this week’s Fun Photo Friday. As always, just click on any image below to enlarge that image and initiate the slide show presentation. Enjoy:

Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Honningsvåg to Kamøyvær

Honningsvåg forecast for our 25 June 2022 arrival

Jewel of the Seas arrived into Honningsvåg, Norway, on 25 June 2022. Honningsvåg is the northernmost city in Norway, and it is located in the municipality of Nordkapp (North Cape). From here we had an early start to the day, as Ursula had us booked on yet another tour. This one would take us to several locations on the island of Magerøya, and I’ll be showing you these destinations over this week and the next four weeks beyond. The tour will hi...
