The Port City of Valparaíso

Overlooking Valparaíso

Overlooking Valparaíso

Ursula and I left Santiago on the morning of March 13 and traveled via bus to the port city of Valparaíso, arriving there in plenty of time to do some major exploration on foot. It was quite a change from Santiago, both visually and culturally. The murals of Santiago are displaced here by graffiti, and architectural beauty is much less abundant.

Our accommodations were first rate, however. We stayed at the colorful ibis Hotel located along the bay an...

Santiago Ho-Ho — Part 4

Santiago Ho-Ho

Santiago Ho-Ho

Street art can be entertaining, and I certainly don’t mean graffiti. While graffiti is the bane of many communities, sometimes painting on walls can be a source of beauty:

The difference between art and crap isn’t so much the “eye of the beholder” as it is talent and execution. Any destructive little twerp with a penchant for vandalism can “tag” something. It takes an artist to do a mural worth photographing.

And if that aforementioned destructive...

Santiago Ho-Ho — Part 3

Santiago 3-11-2015 10-49-28 AM

With a couple of exceptions today’s Ho-Ho views will concentrate on street scenes of people.

As you can see Santiago has much to offer. It’s both clean and safe, and the people are quite fun to watch as they go about their daily activities. Even the street art (more on that Wednesday) ha...

Santiago Ho-Ho — Part 2

Santiago Ho-Ho

Santiago Ho-Ho

While visiting the sights is one advantage of using the Ho-Ho, you can’t beat an elevated view for capturing street images and people.

Santiago Ho-Ho

At street level there are far too many obstacles to good composition, not least of which are the oblivious ones who step right in front of your lens as you press the shutter release. Being above the oblivious has obvious advantages.

But there are disadvantages as well. For one, your ability to take level photos is c...

Santiago Ho-Ho — Part 1

Ursula settles in for the tour

Ursula settles in for the tour — Tour guide headphones included

Over the next two weeks we’ll view Santiago from the vantage point afforded from the upper deck of what is rapidly becoming a touring favorite in cities around the globe — the Hop-on/Hop-off bus. These conveyances are great ways to tour a town to scout out areas that pique your interest and deserve further scrutiny later. Another advantage is that you can hop off the bus at any of the stops, and then hop on another after you’ve w...
