Santiago Metropolitan Park and Funicular Part 1

Funicular Lower Station

Funicular Lower Station

About half an hour’s walk from our apartment in Santiago’s Metropolitan Region is the Metropolitan Park and its funicular to the top of San Cristóbal Hill. San Cristóbal Hill rises some 985 feet/300 meters above the surrounding city, topping out at nearly 2,990 feet/880 meters above sea level. In other words, the view at the top make this a must-see, must-photograph.

Santiago — Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago Part 2

Today I’m keeping it short, as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago needs no words to describe its beauty. Here’s is a photo gallery of the cathedral’s magnificent interior:

Santiago — Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago Part 1

Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral

Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral

On the west side of Plaza de Armas (Santiago’s main square), near the northwest corner, is the Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago (Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago). It’s a magnificent neo-classical design that was completed in 1800 — a 62-year project. Unfortunately, the catherdral, most notably the north tower, was undergoing restoration and had scaffolding marring it’s exterior. But that interior!

Fun Photo Friday — Santiago Street Scene Favorites

Palacio de los Tribunales de Justicia de Santiago

Palacio de los Tribunales de Justicia de Santiago

It’s awfully difficult to pick out “favorite” street scenes from Santiago, because there are so many good ones. Above is the Palacio de los Tribunales de Justicia de Santiago (Courts of Justice Palace of Santiago), one of the many historic buildings surrounding the Plaza de Armas.

Be on the lookout for some very colorful and creative murals on your walks about town:

And, of course, watch for all the smiles that abound here:

Santiago — Street Scenes Part 2

Tricking the Eye

Tricking the Eye

Just walking around the Región Metropolitana de Santiago (Metropolitan Region of Santiago) presents one with many photographic opportunities. Here are some more street scenes of this area and others:

Santiago — Street Scenes Part 1

Plaza de Armas

Plaza de Armas

Ursula found us a very nice furnished apartment for our brief stay in Santiago. It was the Altura Suites at 547 Calle Huérfanos, which is very near Santa Lucía Hill and within easy walking distance of Plaza de Armas (the main square of Santiago), Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Art), and mere minutes from the pedestrianized portion of Calle Huérfanos with it’s myriad higher-end shops, bars, and restaurants. In other words, this is a very convenient location from...

At the top of Santa Lucía Hill are two forts. The main fortification is Castillo Hidalgo, completed in 1820.

Santiago — Santa Lucía Hill Part 1

Santa Lucía chapel

In March of this year Ursula and I once again headed south of the equator, but this time not by ship. The cruise would come a few days later and take us back to the U.S.

But first, beginning today and over the next eight weeks I’m going to take you on an exciting tour of one of my favorite South American cities — Santiago, capital city of Chile — before we head north to Peru, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and even make a stop at The Hotel California on the Baja Peninsula — that pl...
