Santiago Ho-Ho — Part 2

Santiago Ho-Ho

Santiago Ho-Ho

While visiting the sights is one advantage of using the Ho-Ho, you can’t beat an elevated view for capturing street images and people.

Santiago Ho-Ho

At street level there are far too many obstacles to good composition, not least of which are the oblivious ones who step right in front of your lens as you press the shutter release. Being above the oblivious has obvious advantages.

But there are disadvantages as well. For one, your ability to take level photos is c...

Santiago Ho-Ho — Part 1

Ursula settles in for the tour

Ursula settles in for the tour — Tour guide headphones included

Over the next two weeks we’ll view Santiago from the vantage point afforded from the upper deck of what is rapidly becoming a touring favorite in cities around the globe — the Hop-on/Hop-off bus. These conveyances are great ways to tour a town to scout out areas that pique your interest and deserve further scrutiny later. Another advantage is that you can hop off the bus at any of the stops, and then hop on another after you’ve w...

Santiago Architecture Part 2 — Downtown “Sanhattan”

Looks like a Cell Phone — Telefónica (Telephone) Chile Building

Looks like a Cell Phone — Torre Telefónica (Telephone Tower) Building

Not all the buildings in Santiago are old. There is a newer section of town that is a modern sea of glistening glass and structural steel. That’s the “Sanhattan” area of Santiago, a made-up word that combines “Santiago” and “Manhattan”, and justifiably so. The photograph above depicts the cell phone-shape of Chile’s telephone company, which at one time was the tallest structure in Santiago. Today it’s number five. The curre...

Santiago Architecture Part 1

Basilica de la Merced

Basilica de la Merced

Plaza de Armas isn’t the only place in Santiago, Chile, with photo-worthy buildings. Such sights are everywhere. The reddish, twin-bell towered Basilica de la Merced is one such building. The Basilica is five minutes walk from Plaza de Armas, and less than fifteen minutes by foot from Plaza de la Constitución.

Atop San Cristóbal Hill are another couple surprises. The most notable being the Blessed Virgin Mary statue. This statue measures 72 feet/22 meters in height, and stands upon a 46-foot/14-meter tall pedestal:
