Lucky Seven
Lucky 7 is a blog challenge. I was invited to take part by author Maria Savva, whose collection of short stories Fusion I read last year, and whose novel The Dream I'm currently reading.
The challenge is to blog 7 lines from unpublished works of fiction. Here are the instructions:
1. Go to page 7 or 77 in your current manuscript (fiction or non-fiction);
2. Go to line 7;
3. Post on your blog the next 7 lines, or sentences, as they are – no cheating;
4. Tag 7 other authors to do the same.
I'm around half way through a novel set on the island of Lewis, in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Here are 7 sentences from page 7, beginning 7 lines from the top (777, the Neighbour of the Beast?):
She screamed, "Lucifer’s coalbucket!" and out I shot like a lubricated bullet. My father dived across the room, skinning his knees and elbows, but catching me in his safe hands; my first contact with the outside world was a soft descent onto fatherly flesh rather than a head-first bounce on a stone living room floor. The clock began ticking again. Duncan MacLeary - the old Valtos hermit whom some called 'Seer' but most called 'Village Idiot' – appeared at the door brandishing homemade shortbread, mussel soup and whisky. He put a pinch of each into my father’s mortar, then used a stone pestle to grind the ingredients into a paste. This, rather than mother’s milk, was the first thing I tasted. Duncan dipped a bony index finger into the goo and offered it to my mouth, which suckled nourishment from the ancient digit as if it truly were a nipple.
Now, I'd like to pass the challenge to the following seven authors. I know how busy you all are, so I completely understand if you don't have time to do a lucky seven blog post. If you do post one, however, I'll be interested to see the results.
