Naomi
By Naomi Miller and Garvin Matthews
PRESS RELEASE
Neglectful mother, abusive stepfathers and married at only seventeen to a drug dealer, Naomi’s life was far from the fairytale young girls dream, yet today she finds the courage to share her story in this unflinching yet inspirational memoir
Anyone can overcome anything, even in their darkest hour.
For Naomi, life is destined to be a challenge. Born in Wolverhampton to Jamaican parents she does not know her father and her mother, desperate to be loved, seeks the attentions of men and in the process neglects the welfare of her children. Naomi goes to school in clothes that are too small, without a coat in freezing weather and often without eating breakfast. When one of her mother’s boyfriends attempts to sexually assault the young Naomi the first thing she does is confide in her mother but instead of the love and support she expected she gets sent to live with her Grandmother carrying with her only feelings of shame and rejection.
At the age of seventeen Naomi finally has a chance to escape her mental prison thanks to her older boyfriend who she believes to be the love of her life and they are quickly married. But the rose tinted glasses are soon smashed to pieces when she discovers he is a crack dealer, a wife beater and a womaniser destined for jail. No confidence, self-esteem or understanding of a real loving family or relationship Naomi finds herself in a desperate cycle of abusive relationships and susceptible to the charms and promises of other men. Naomi doesn’t want to end up like her mother, but the harder she tries the more inevitable it seems. That is until a chance meeting with Garvin, a soldier in the British Army, who comes in at breaking point and shows her the meaning of true friendship and love and ultimately helps her to gain confidence and happiness in life for the very first time.
Compulsive reading, this stimulating memoir presents a harrowing yet inspirational tale highlighting the strength and endurance of the human spirit. By revealing her own story Naomi has shown that there is always hope and the possibility for new beginnings, even in the direst circumstances, and her moving story will undoubtedly provide much-needed support for anybody suffering from domestic violence.
