Interview With Author Vicki FitzGerald
# Please introduce yourself and your book(s)!
I’m Vicki Fitzgerald, a UK crime thriller author. I’ve published two thrillers Kill List and Briguella, plus a memoir, Still Standing.
# What is/are the real-life story(ies) behind your book(s)?
My memoir conveys my life journey to date and all the obstacles I’ve overcome from divorce, betrayal, suicide attempts, depression and learning to walk again after breaking my leg in nine places. To the more cheery side, which is the point I have now reached with new love and a contract with Hollywood producer Ken Atchity. I just wanted to inspire people to never give up and keep going no matter what life throws at you.
My thrillers also do touch on circumstances which have happened to me, including drugging. I wanted to show how someone’s life can change at any moment in time and unspeakable actions can occur.
# What inspires/inspired your creativity?
I’m a pisces, so I was born with a creative side. I’ve always loved writing and started out as a Journalist before embarking on my own Public Relations firm. Writing is what I do best. It makes me feel alive. Briguella, my debut was based on a real case of a sex attacker that I covered for a regional paper about 15 years ago.
# How do you deal with creative block?
I tend to leave the house and go to look for locations where I can set a scene. I take photos and notes and try to make the scene as true to life as possible when writing. If it’s raining I tend to watch a dark thriller to delve into my dark side.
# What are the biggest mistakes you can make in a book?
Not editing enough and not leaving time to let it settle. I personally think once you have finished your manuscript you should let it sit for a while. Take a break and go do some fun activities. It helps to come back with fresh eyes. That’s when you notice mistakes and you tighten your writing to make it even better.
# Do you have tips on choosing titles and covers?
I would suggest examining titles in your own genre, see what seems to be working. With Kill List, I had the cover designed with yellow, red and white writing. I put it out to Facebook and the majority were attracted to the yellow, as was I.
I think punchy titles work best.
# How do bad reviews and negative feedback affect you and how do you deal with them?
Don’t get me wrong when you receive a bad review it’s like a punch to the stomach. You have to realise your book isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea! Kill List is dark and twisted with violent scenes, but it had to be in order for it to be true to life.
Still Standing attracted a few negatives but I can see through those. They were written by people who recognise themselves as the bad characters who hurt me. The truth hurts as they say. At the end of the day the positive reviews far outweigh the bad and that’s what is important.
# How has your creation process improved over time?
I’ve got others involved. Asked for friends (some with writing backgrounds) to read through it. This has kept me on my toes when I’m have writer’s block. They are demanding more that I haven’t written, so It’s made me more disciplined. Also they have helped with inputting ideas. I also edit, edit, edit! Printing it out works best and scribbling with a pen.
# What were the best, worst and most surprising things you encountered during the entire process of completing your book(s)?
The worst aspect is submitting a book to an agent, waiting months and months, only to be told sorry it doesn’t fit with our agency. I always kept in the back of my mind, Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ was rejected 30 times before it was published and turned into a blockbuster movie. You have to tell yourself to never give up and chase your dreams.
The best moment is receiving your book in the post and holding it in your hands for the very first time. It makes you feel super proud of yourself and how far your have come.
I have found other author’s surprising. Worldwide bestseller, Adam Croft, went out of his way to help me, offering a review and advice on the best writing system to use. He really didn’t have to help and I’m extremely grateful.
Surprisingly, I found a jealous side when pitching in Dublin at the Writer’s Conference to Ken Atchity and received negative comments from those who were not selected. And if I am completely honest, those who are closest to me have not given me the support I would have hoped for, or even read some of my novels, or show any interest in what I do, which makes me very, very sad and disappointed.
# Do you tend towards personal satisfaction or aim to serve your readers? Do you balance the two and how?
I guess it was personal satisfaction for my memoir. I needed to get the truth of my chest as some many people form their own, wrong opinions.
With thrillers, it’s about giving the readers a great story and world for them to delve into. The positive reviews once published give me great satisfaction.
# What role do emotions play in creativity?
A huge role. I find myself crying at some scenes when I am writing them. I put my heart and soul into my writing and try to draw from my own personal circumstances that I have experienced and overcome. To me it feels more believable.
# Do you have any creativity tricks?
I draw inspiration from people around me. If I see a particular character in real life, I recall their looks and traits. For example the evil character, DCI Cronwell was inspired from a man I encountered on a course. He had tiny Tic Tac teeth, dribbled a lot in the corner of his mouth and had a scar down one side of his face. He was certainly someone I would never forget.
Keep a notebook by your bed in case you have any ideas or wake from a dream. Guaranteed, if you do not get them down, you’ll quickly forget. Brainstorm. Always print your manuscript out and look at the first paragraph and last paragraph. This helps me see if they are punchy enough to draw you in and make you turn the page.
# What are your plans for future books?
Kill List could potentially be turned into a TV series. My agent and I have finalised a film treatment. He has the option to produce it, or pitch to other Hollywood or indeed UK producers.
I’m currently working on my forth novel, Lies Kill.
# Tell us some quirky facts about yourself
I know how to kill and get away with it and the best place to dump a body! Not that I am planning on committing murder.
I love to cook, especially Greek cuisine, with a nice drop of wine.
I love music, especially 60s classic soul and Motown.
I’ve had reconstructive surgery to my spine from a slipped disc 11 years ago. And now a metal rod in my leg, which helped me to walk again after a bike crash in 2019. I’m a fighter!
I have two wonderful children who keep me on my toes and think that I’m a little disturbed!
I’ve two dogs and an 18 year old cat.
I’ve met and interviewed numerous celebrities in my role as a journalist.
I have a BA (hons) degree in Journalism.
I love to travel and explore new places and countries. But I was once rescued at sea in Turkey after our pedalo drifted.
Working outdoors in the sunshine is my favourite place to write.
I once undertook a feature campaign challenged by readers to undertake tasks. From that I learned to bellydance, pole dance, model, ring church bells, and work in McDonalds.
I can make homemade bath bombs, soaps, whips, and bath milks.

The Story of Beauty and the Beast. Part Two.
The Beauty speaks about Still Standing:
Trust me, Matt is no beast. He’s a loveable American oozing fun and he charmed me the moment he spoke in his hip, New Yorker accent. I was in awe of his book success and wanted to get to know him more. Matt smiled, invited me to join him, and I explained I was there to pitch my thriller, Kill List, for a movie adaption to Emmy-nominated producer, Ken Atchity.
Matt loved the plot, even laughed at my warped mind. He was sincere, kind, and mentored me. He convinced me that I’d nail my pitch. I didn’t! Nerves swamped me. Matt shook his head and whispered, “You f***ed that up!” I wanted to burst into tears and fall apart. My husband had just left me, and the one shot I had at a new life, had crashed. I’d let myself, my kids, and Matt, down.
Matt learned that my smile was masking much pain. He suggested writing a true-life book about me. I laughed, shook my head, and said: “No, thanks.” He shrugged, disappointed, and we headed to Dublin’s famous Temple Bar. After much laughter, and almost postponing my flight, I headed back to England, thinking I’d lost my chance of a movie, but had found a good friend indeed.
Over the next year, I fell fast and hard. There were suicide attempts, a car crash, an arrest, and I was assaulted. I’d hit rock bottom. But my gut told me I still had something special, Kill List. I returned to Dublin to pitch again to Ken, and reunite with Matt. This time around I won - Ken wanted my film treatment! Matt smiled; I’d made him proud. Over a celebratory Gin, I said: “I’m ready now, it’s time.” I hoped my story could inspire those at rock bottom to start climbing.
Writing is lonely. We sit alone, hammering out our stories, praying readers will love our work. Collaborating with Matt was a different matter. I’d stun him with yet another tale, and we would laugh for hours over Skype calls. I came to trust Matt with my life. I’ve gained a guardian, a protector, and a wonderful father figure. It was written in the stars that our paths would collide. Maybe all my mistakes, weren’t mistakes, after all, they were fate.

The Story of Beauty and the Beast. Part One.
The Beast Speaks:
Call it fate or Irish luck, I first met Vicki at a writer’s conference in Dublin, Ireland. As the father of three sons, I knew little about raising girls—Mary Ann, my wife of 50+ years, and Bella, my feisty 16-year-old granddaughter, will attest to that!
Somehow, this intelligent and witty 30-something mom from South West England, and I, had instant chemistry. We talked over tea and sandwiches. I discovered behind Vicki’s wholesome, cheery mask sat a turbulent world of self-doubt that included broken relationships, marital infidelity, severe depression, grief, a spinal injury, and other bad choices.
I was stunned by her honesty, her fragility, and her determination to turn the page. I suggested her story, told correctly, could touch people’s hearts, perhaps even offer some life lessons without being preachy. She said politely, “No, thank you.”
One year later, we met again in Dublin, this time over a pint of Guinness. I said nothing of our prior conversation. I soon learned Vicki’s life had tumbled. She’d made attempts at suicide, endured an assault, a car crash, arrest, a court case, had even been sued by her best friend. I was gobsmacked. Eyes twinkling like two bright stars, Vicki then nodded, “I’m good now. It’s time.”
So began our 7,000 mile England to America collaboration. During the next year, Vicki unlocked the key to her soul. And now our book entitled Still Standing: One woman’s struggle with divorce, depression, and betrayal, sits in the Amazon bookstore, and the initial reviews have been heart-warming.
As I suspected, readers, regardless of age or circumstance, remark Vicki’s story is one you will not soon forget. More importantly, the old Vicki is back, feisty as ever. She has vowed to live the rest of her life in the sunshine. I believe her. I applaud her. I love her like my own daughter.

Still Standing Memoir Reviews
I’m looking for readers to review my new memoir, Still Standing!
I’ve been quiet for a while battling through some tough times and learning to walk again! But out of all the trauma has come a unique collaboration between myself and critically-acclaimed author M.G.Crisci. He encouraged me to share my story to help and inspire others. That’s all I want to do. Now I need to get some initial reviews and need your help please. Please find info below and message me in your would like a copy. Huge thanks xxxx
Raw Emotion. Life or Death. Truthfully Delivered.
Vicki was 28 when her neat world crumbled. Her moral compass--beloved Gramps--died suddenly, leaving Vicki depressed and insecure. Despite a series of poor choices in men and life, by 24, Vicki had built a career as a noted crime reporter, wife, and mother.
But success led to disaster. Vicki's perfect world crumbled with bitter family upheaval, leading to multiple suicide attempts. Now 38, Vicki lays her soul bare and shares the pivotal moments of her roller-coaster life: depression, grief, heartache, trauma, drugging, and suicide, truthfully, and candidly.
Her story is heartbreaking, inspiring, and unexpectedly witty.
Most of all, "Still Standing" is a remarkable story of resilience and survival --an honest portrayal of one woman's life and her determination for a new beginning.Vicki Fitzgerald

Advanced readers needed please x
Hi everyone, It has been a while since I posted a blog. I've been locked away in my office busy completing my second novel and have also had a tough time of late personally.
However, I am now ready to get back on form and share my novel. With that in mind, I am looking for advanced readers.
It is certainly much darker than my debut Briguella and involves the sinister dark web with a revenge plot.
So, if you are interested in psychological crime thrillers my book could be of interest. I would love to share it with you. Please message me if you would like to be one of my early readers.
Thanks for your support and my apologies for being quiet for a while.
Vicki

Wonderful reviews & huge thanks!!
I must apologise for being out of action. I have been very ill for a good week and am still quite poorly, to be honest, and trying to recover, so I have been unable to write or read, which feels so wrong!
I have popped online today (laptop in bed), trying to catch up with all the new reviews that have been coming through for Briguella!
There have been some amazing ones (all 5 or 4 star) which has been overwhelming. The comments and praise that Briguella has received are mindblowing! A huge thank you to every single one of you who has taken the time to offer your opinions and support.
Feeling rather sorry for myself, this review published today on Bibliophile Book Club really cheered me up. I would like to thank
Ellen Devonport for her review:
"One of the highlights of being a guest reviewer is that I will often come across little hidden gems of genius and Briguella by Vicki Fitzgerald was that book this month! This is a book that deserves more recognition; I was drawn in from the chilling start and by the end I felt wrung out emotionally. A tale containing a serial killer was always going to grab my interest and this book is written so well that I couldn’t help but race through the pages.
"The story centres around three main characters: Kate Rivendale, a journalist who is desperate to get the next big scoop but with a conscience, DCI William Beckley, a detective who must crack the case due to past mistakes and the killer, a mystery figure who wears a mask depicting Briguella (a cunning and wicked character from the Commedia dell’arte).
"There is a little #sexytension between Kate and William but this didn’t detract from my enjoyment as it becomes obvious Kate is devoted to her husband. Kate has her own secrets though and her desperation to solve the case leads her directly into the path of the killer; from this point I was absolutely gripped. The killer is terrifying and had already murdered at least six women before he encounters Kate after already warning her off. The killer is absolutely terrifying and his attacks are brutal.
"A stunning debut; I can’t wait to see what is next from this author."
Lastly if I have missed anyone's comments on anything I am sorry. Please do message me if you would like to review Briguella or ask me any questions.
Best wishes & happy reading!
Vicki
Crime writing dream comes true for ex Southampton student
A Southampton Solent University graduate has fulfilled her lifelong ambition and released a debut crime fiction novel.
Vicki FitzGerald, who studied a BA (Hons) degree in journalism, worked as a regional reporter in the south west for a decade upon graduating.
After venturing into public relations for six years, Vicki decided to follow her dream of becoming a published author, and has released debut crime thriller, Briguella.
The self-published book is based upon her experiences of covering crime stories for a local newspaper.
It follows the story of a journalist Kate Rivendale, who becomes embroiled in the manhunt for a serial killer in the fictional town Westhaven.
The authorities have no suspect, only one forensic link dating way back to the 1930s. Kate agrees to go undercover but her actions have devastating consequences.
Vicki, 36, says creating the book has been a long process and she put her company, Paramount PR, on hold to carry out extensive research and bring it to fruition.
The mum-of-two said: “I am thrilled my debut crime thriller has been published and I’m truly humbled by all fantastic reviews it has already gained.
“Oddly, I enjoyed covering crime as a reporter and it helped to inspire the book.
“Briguella is based loosely around a police investigation I covered involving a serial attacker and readers will recognise many South West landmarks."
Briguella is available on Amazon to order in paperback or as an eBook at https://mybook.to/Briguella
