What Styles of Drafting Work for You?

Here's the latest from Jami Gold, Paranormal Author :

With the month of NaNoWriMo upon us, we might wonder about the value and difficulty of various styles of drafting. For example, some might see NaNo’s goals—where we try to write 50K words in 30 days—and think about “fast drafting” or word sprinting, like on Twitter’s #1k1hr hashtag.

But we all have different writing processes, and what works for one might not work for another. Or more frustratingly, just because something works for us one time doesn’t mean it will work for...

Need NaNoWriMo Help? Check Out These Resources

Here's the latest from Jami Gold, Paranormal Author :

Every day, I receive—and delete—several spammy emails offering to write a guest post for my blog. Luckily, the quality of real proposals I receive with my annual invitation for guest posts to run during the month of NaNoWriMo is a vast improvement. *grin*

Before I kick off this year’s NaNo guest posts next week, I want to give a shout out to some of my past guest posters who also provided fantastic advice about how to do our best during NaNo

10 Tips To Help You Rock NaNoWriMo Your Way

I’ve oft...

Romance Genre: How Can We Portray Healthy Relationships?

Here's the latest from Jami Gold, Paranormal Author :

Last week, I presented my new workshop, Between the Sheets: Create a Deeper Romance with the Romance Beat Sheet. The class went great, and the reviews have all been very positive. Yay!

(*psst* If you missed it, the workshop is now available OnDemand. *grin*)

Despite the title, however, we didn’t focus only on my popular Romance Beat Sheet. The class covers all of the underlying elements that contribute to readers’ sense of a strong, deep relationship between our characters, including...

NaNoWriMo Is Coming…Are You Ready?

Here's the latest from Jami Gold, Paranormal Author :

Winter…er, NaNoWriMo is coming. Many writers will spend the month of November dedicating every spare minute to writing as they participate in National Novel Writing Month (known as NaNoWriMo or just plain NaNo).

Usually this time of year I’d be offering my Lost Your Pants? workshop to help writers get their story idea into shape before the first of November....

Romance Beats vs. 12 Stages of Intimacy

Here's the latest from Jami Gold, Paranormal Author :

Today’s the day of my new workshop on my Romance Beat Sheet. Yay!

Ever since announcing my workshop, I’ve gotten several messages from writers wondering if I was going to cover A, B, or C. Not everything is a good fit for what I’m trying to do with the class, however.

For example, after attending the Romance Writers Summit, Cristen Edwards asked about a concept that didn’t quite fit my upcoming workshop. But it was a great question, so I figured I’d dig into the idea here.

Cristen asked:

“One...

How Is Our Protagonist Challenged to Improve? (& a Worksheet!)

Here's the latest from Jami Gold, Paranormal Author :

I’ve been having a lot of fun preparing the mini-ebook-style handout for my upcoming Romance Beat Sheet workshop. The handouts for my classes are often a brain dump of tons of information, and this workshop is no exception.

One section of the handout is about our characters’ arcs, focusing on Michael Hauge’s teachings about Identity and Essence. Those who have studied Michael’s explanation know there are a lot of elements to juggle. Our characters start with four aspects o...

Get a Sneak Peek of My New Romance Workshop!

Here's the latest from Jami Gold, Paranormal Author :

For the past several weeks, I’ve been talking about an amazing free online event I’m part of: the Romance Writers Summit.

I love reading and writing romance. Maybe that’s because I’m a Pollyanna at heart and value happy endings. *smile* But that’s also why I decided to be part of the Summit.

If you missed me talking about it before, the Romance Writers Summit is a 5-day, online writers event going on this week that brought together some of the best storytellers, authors,...

Watching Out for Redundancy in Our Story

Here's the latest from Jami Gold, Paranormal Author :

Once I start reading a book beyond the Look Inside feature at Amazon, it’s rare for me to DNF (did not finish) a story. If I DNF a book later in the story, it’s usually because something pushed it into a “hate read” category.

In other words, for me to give up on a book, I have to actively be rooting against the ending I know is coming. I’ve been known to root against a massively too-stupid-to-live character, but more commonly, the issue is a main character who behaved...
