After building a Fortress of Solitude from books in her to-be-read pile, Jami Gold moved to Arizona and decided to become a writer, where she could put her talent for making up stuff to good use, including winning the 2015 National Readers’ Choice Award in Paranormal Romance for Ironclad Devotion.

Fueled by chocolate, she writes paranormal romance and urban fantasy tales that range from dark to humorous, but one thing remains the same: Normal need not apply. Just ask her family—and zombie cat.

That's why I have a whole blog geared toward writers, with hundreds of articles about plot, characters, scenes, character growth, etc. (at http://jamigold.com/blog/ and check the sidebar for a search box and menu of post topics).

My first piece of advice would be to embrace the learning curve. Don't expect to go into writing and be able to learn everything--and then be done learning. Nope...the learning goes on forever--think *journey* not *destination*. ;)(less)

I love being a writer for *many* reasons! :) But my favorite part is getting to know my characters.

I write "organically," meaning that I don't know very much about my story before I start, and I end up writing by the seat of my pants. So for me, writing a story is like making a new best friend, as I learn about my characters: their likes and dislikes, their personality, etc. And then I get to see them grow into their potential over the course of the story--fun!(less)

This book was a tear-jerker favorite of mine this year. Just when I thought the story was heading in one direction and I was trying to find happiness in that setup, the story went a different direction that completely won my heart.

“What’s that?” “Oh hell,” Michael said. Quan smacked his palm to his forehead.
The sex advice scene in this book was inspired by a real life conversation I had with my siblings (I think I was nineteen or twenty?) where I learned from MY BROTHER what a clitoris is. Oh the humiliation.

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
“I’m not crying because I’m scared I’ll get sick,” her girl had replied. “I’m crying because I love you.”
I was extremely absentminded and clumsy while I wrote the first book in this series, THE KISS QUOTIENT. I couldn’t stop daydreaming about it. I wasn’t sleeping. I often forgot to eat. One day, while taking out the garbage (and obsessively contemplating that story), I accidently stepped into an open pipe and tore my shin open to the bone (I still have the scar, which I call my Kiss Quotient Scar). My girl saw and started crying. I told her not to be afraid, that it was just blood. She said, “I’m not crying because I’m afraid of blood. I’m crying because I love you."
