Jeremiah Salyer's Blog: What I've read this week - Posts Tagged "weekly-blog"

Slogging my way through Obama's ramblings, comic book excursions, and audiobook rumblings.

Well here I am on goodreads.com again. I love Goodreads! If you love books and the community of the internet, or the Internet of Things as Intel loves to refer to it, then you should have an account. I can share just about every book I've ever read, what page I'm on, and promote my own writings. This week I've read several things. First and foremost, my number one target of traditional paper books has been the first edition of Barrack Hussein Obama's book Dreams of My Father. Originally I became interested in this memoir because of a line in the 2004 edition which seemed to suggest he had deleted content from the latest edition in the names of his political ambitions for high office. I read this statement again as I began reading the first edition I purchased from Amazon.com. In hindsight, I may have mis-read it. As a fervent enemy of Obama's agenda for our country, I realized that I over-analyzed the statement with conspiratorial zeal. Here is the
original statement. "I have the urge to cut the book by fifty pages or so, possessed as I am with a keener appreciation for brevity. I cannot honestly say, however, that the voice in this book is not mine-that I would tell the story much differently today than I did ten years ago, even if certain passages have proven to be inconvenient politically, the grist for pundit commentary and opposition research." Thus far, there hasn't been a lot of damaging material other than ridiculous and silly racial pride. And of course what I would call confusion. President Obama is clearly confused on the subject of race from his upbringing. Some have alleged that this book was written by Bill Ayers. I doubt there is any truth in that but someone did strike out Obama's name and pencil it in on the title page of the used library copy I purchased on the internet. Also there are numerous places where he clearly struggles with the idea of individual merit and achievement, a concept inherently unfair to socialists, and seems to prefer to wallow in guilt over any personal success. I cannot understand that part of his thinking.
A few words on his style. I could write a better memoir than this rambling idiocy. President George W. Bush, though a bit repetitive (particularly in the use of the word "I disagreed" or "I had to make a decision fast") wrote a much better succinct book that was much easier to understand. I say this without political orientation or avarice towards policy decisions. I am attempting to compare and contrast writing styles only.
I am not finished yet but I think I will be done in less than a week.
Another thing about Dreams of My Father. It completely fails to describe or explain any dreams. Obama didn't know his father, or father's since he had three father figures in his life thought not at once. He seems through his journey to be searching for the memory of who his father was, which I can respect, but not clearly articulating at all what his conclusions are. In the end, this book will probably ramble into the far distance without establishing much of a point.
Meanwhile, in the world of comic books I finally finished the Maximum Carnage arc. This story was a lot of fun to read and visually the best era of artwork that Marvel ever drew for Amazing Spider-Man.
