Set in 1960s Ireland, Tóibín’s new novel Nora Webster introduces one of the most complex and captivating heroines of contemporary fiction. He discusses the book and his new study On Elizabeth Bishop. He creates a vivid picture of the American poet while also revealing how her work has helped shape his sensibility as a novelist and how her experiences of loss and exile resonate with his own.

The literature of loss has a rich history. Colm Tóibín’s new book, Nora Webster, is infused with the grief he suffered following the death of his father, though told through the perspective of a mother. The setting is his home town in Ireland at a time of political and personal turmoil. Many of the events in the novel are autobiographical, though filtered through fiction. Colm Tóibín is a multi-award winning writer. His other books include Brooklyn (soon to be released as a film) and The Testament of Mary. Chaired by Claire Armitstead, Head of Books, Guardian and Observer.

On April 23, Saint Jordi’s Day, Catalonians offer books and flowers to loved ones in honor of Barcelona’s patron saint. In a New York version of this tradition, Jordi Puntí and Colm Tóibín pay tribute to the great Catalan writer Josep Pla, whose books include The Gray Notebook and Life Embitters. Puntì and Tóibín will discuss Pla’s life, work, and enduring influence on Catalan and Spanish literature.
