Benjamin Jones's Blog - Posts Tagged "vampires"
Interview with Amanda aka Moonlight from Vampires.com
I recently chatted with Benjamin Jones, the author of the new series Humanity's Ultimate Battle (H.U.B.), on Horror Fest, his vampire loves (and hates), his writing and much more. Check it out and let us know what you think in a comment below.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am 33 years old husband to one and father of two girls. I'm also an avid Red Sox and Celtics fan. Being a writer is something that I've always wanted to do and I feel that I have a lot to tell the world - I just have to get the people to listen. I've been seriously writing for about 15 years now.
Can you tell us about your book H.U.B.?
Humanity's Ultimate Battle (H.U.B.) is an epic series set in a world where vampires have "come out" to humans and are attempting to live peacefully amongst them (some of them are, anyway). There's a mutual distrust between the humans and vampires going on, which is to be expected, and, at the same time, a rogue group of vampires is attempting to draw both sides into war as they feel that vampires should be the top of the food chain.
How does H.U.B. differ from other novels about vampires?
How H.U.B. differs is that the world of vampires, and how they interact with humans, is more "real world" based. You get to see different sides to vampires and humans that you don't get with other novels: you see the vampires that want to be peaceful and just live their lives; you see the politics of both humans and vampires; you see the humans that act just as monstrous as the vampires, etc... Taken from a real world aspect, you could look at the vampires in H.U.B. as illegal immigrants and you get to see how they live, how they're treated, their fears, etc...
Where did you get the idea for H.U.B.?
The idea from H.U.B. started off as a joke really. One day at work I was eating lunch with a co-worker and his wife and the topic of a certain set of books/movies that involve glittery vampires came up and we were discussing all the things we disliked about it (how they were slated towards young girls with all the romance crap) and we started talking about how it would be if we were to write our own story about vampires and take it back to the classic days when vampires were to be feared, not loved. From that moment on the idea took off and has been rolling along ever since.
What got you interested in writing about vampires?
I've always been a sucker for horror movies/books as some of my earliest memories was my mother taking me to see Cujo and Evil Dead at a very young age which probably warped my mind a little bit. Vampires (and zombies to great degree) have always been a fascination of mine.
Ok, here’s a question I ask all folks I interview: I’ve noticed that most of the authors I follow on Twitter talk about the music they’re currently writing to. What kind of setting/atmosphere do you find most conducive to your writing?
Music is my second love and I do my best writing when listening. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't write without my iPod being on. I find that my best writing comes from listening to some hip hop music. My writing necessities are my iPod, a pen and some paper (and occasionally a drink of some sorts). LOL As long as I have some music nothing else really matters.
If vampires were discovered to exist today, do you think our society would accept them or try to destroy them?
Definitely destroy. As detailed in my series, I think there would be a small percentage of the population that would want to embrace them but the majority would be too afraid of them to do that.
Who’s your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?
I would have to say Blade, though the third movie sucked ass!
What is your favorite vampire book/movie/show?
30 Days of Night as I felt it was more "realistic" to how I perceive vampires to be. The vampires in 30 Days of Night were bad ass and blood hungry and that's a lethal combination.
Tell our readers why they should check out your book - in 3 words: (bwahaha)
It's f**king awesome! LOL
And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
I'm currently working on the second draft of H.U.B. Volume 3: The Tipping Point which I have slated for 9.10.11 release date. I'm also editing a romance novel entitled Head Above Water that will be out sometime this year as well. Also, I will be working on a collaboration project with fellow author Tiffanie Minnis (author of ~D.I.V.A.~ Domestically Involved in Violent Affairs) that I'm hoping will be ready by the 4th quarter of this year.
For fans in the area, I will have a booth at the Underground Horror Fest 2 in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 5th (the first of many festivals that I'm hoping to hit this year) so come out and show some support!

H.U.B. Volume 3 + Other Goodies
Morning/afternoon/evening to all of you.
Work on Humanity's Ultimate Battle (H.U.B.) Volume 3: The Tipping Point is pretty much done (at least the writing portion of it, anyway). I'm really happy with the way that it has turned out and serves a perfect bridge between the first two volumes and volume 4 which is where the s**t really hits the fan. So far the reviews from the few people that have read it have been extremely positive and includes the following:
"After reading Volumes 1 & 2, I was really excited about been given the chance to exclusively read the next Chapter in what has got me so enthralled. Volume 3 is a lot more laid back than the first two BUT make no mistake there may not be as much blood shed this time around but the storyline unravels what potentially could lead to volume 4 being the best book in the series of HUB. The book ends on a very sad note for the Vampire nation and its at this point you know that the War between the two nations is about to get cranked up and made a thousand times worse, am glad I don't live in this world that has been created by Author Benjamin Jones cause World War III could about to erupt in Volume 4. A thoroughly enjoyable read that left me wishing Volume 4 was already witten and was right next to me ready to read.
Rating 4 Book out of 5!!! " - Mark Horrobin from Manchester, UK
And this from my good friend Benjamin Rogers, author of Faith & The Undead: "Just finished Hub 3 and I have to say that it is incredibly strong and well written. As with the second edition you are really building a world here and it is really good and intriguing!"
So, based off those reviews, I know that it's going to be something special when it drops. It will arrive on 9.10.11 as an e-book (be on the lookout for it on Smashwords, the Kindle and Nook) and possibly as a printed up version as well depending on how my funds look. Either way, be sure to check out http://www.whatishub.net for information on how to get your copy!
I submitted the cover design that I want to Chris Leepow, the artist who did the wonderful cover for Volume 2 and he thinks my vision is easily do-able so I'm waiting to get the results back. Based off the sample pic he provided I can already tell that the cover for Volume 3 is going to be MEAN!! That should be debuting very VERY soon!
The trailer for the H.U.B. book series is up and I encourage you all to check it out. You can find it by visiting the HUB Youtube page at http://www.youtube.com/user/hubiscoming .

Book Review - Bitemarks by Drew Cross
I first became aware of Drew Cross via an interaction on the site Getfanged.com *shameless plug* and, through a conversation, we agreed to "swap" books and I would read/review his book while he did the same for mine.
Drew's book, Bitemarks, is the story about police officer Shane Marks who has a lifestyle that is a little "different" from most and one that a person wouldn't normally come out and say upon introductions. I won't ruin it but through the course of the book Shane is on the trail of a killer who is essentially the same as him only with a slight penchant for murder, hence the "killer" that I mentioned a few words above.
I was able to run through this book in about 3 hours as it is a remarkably good book and a page turner to say the least. While in the middle of reading it I kept thinking to myself on how "fun" this book was which isn't something that I often say when reading a book, especially one that deals with murder and suspense. The interaction between Shane Marks and his partner Marcus are great and are one of the many highlights of the book.
Another thing that I enjoyed was the detail that Drew uses when writing; he writes in a style that I could only call artistry, the words seeming to flow effortlessly with amazing clarity.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to future works from Mr. Cross. Go get this book!

About the author:
Drew Cross is a 30 year old former model and ex-police officer (but regrettably never a model police officer!) from Nottingham, England; he is married with two small children (The Zeds - Zac aged 4 and Zara aged 3) and a weimaraner dog. When he's not reading, writing, toddler-wrangling or dog-wrestling, he enjoys martial arts, running, cooking various global cuisines and meditating. He has an interest in Eastern philosophy and the Goth subculture, and hopes one day to break the habit of writing about himself in the third person!

New H.U.B. Volume 1 & 2 Review
Humanity’s Ultimate Battle is waged on the pages of the first two volumes of a unique series penned by Benjamin Jones. HUB follows the struggles of humanity coming to grips with a secret that has been kept for thousands of years. Vampires are real. They’re so real, in fact, that they hold key political positions. They operate just like normal humans. They have jobs, houses, families and bills.
I think that’s what hit me the most with HUB. The vampires have a very human element that is missing from most vampire literature. And it’s not the Rice or Meyers way of providing the human element of incessant whining. HUB shows what it’s like for a society of people who live on the outside of the world that they have a direct connection to. There are vampire children that are actually born, not just a creepy “stay a kid forever” turning.
The sun doesn’t always shine, though. The book begins with an opening scene showing crushed humanity living like cattle on an island. The fear that is expressed in one short introduction is palpable. For me, that island is always on my mind while I’m reading through the books. It’s not often that you anticipate the final battle, but damn, you know it is coming and it’s going to be good.
This is a vampire book. It’s not a main character struggles to live and love with a vampire. There are very few humans that are introduced that aren’t slaughtered a mere page later. Instead of the old routine of vampire vs. human that shouldn’t be able to compete with a vampire, we get a story that shows how far above the humans the vampires are on the food chain. The vampires are divided, with most wanting a peaceful integration into normal society. However a rogue group is determined to turn humans back into the cattle that they were meant to be. Every action by this group leads us closer to the final showdown. Every time they force a hand, you can feel the pressure of the humans to take it back to them. There are more and more humans that aren’t happy with sharing their world with bloodsuckers. The acts of violence rendered on innocent vampires just because they are different hearkens back to a time in our own country’s history where people were treated differently due to their not being “normal” in comparison to the majority. It is a darkness that lends strength to the story, though. You realize that there are bad people on both sides. You also realize that it’s all going to come to a head and when it does, there’s no guarantee for humanity.
The vampires themselves are pretty standard fare, with pale skin, usually attractive, fingers that elongate into claws, silver eyes and long fangs. They don’t sparkle, so that’s a definite positive. They also regenerate wounds quickly, have super strength and speed. The vamps don’t have to have the blood to survive, but some of them relish in the joy of the hunt. There have been many vampire takes presented throughout the years, but one small part of Jones’ foray that stuck with me is the “stake in the heart” death. It’s not there, woe to the one who tries. But there is hope for humanity as the vamps can be killed and the government is organizing a new weapon against the bloodsuckers. Want to know what it is? Well, read Volumes 1 and 2 to find out.
All in all, HUB is a fresh take on a theme that has been put through the wringer time and time again. The words flow quickly and effortlessly, allowing the works to be consumed rather quickly. Benjamin Jones (pictured above) has a hell of a start on a good series that could easily be transferred to other media. It’s nice to see vampires back as the demi-gods they are, not playing fetch the pale grunge girl with a bunch of Native American werewolves. Check out the details and even get a free PDF copy of Volume 1 on www.whatishub.net and keep an eye out for future installments to be released later this year. It’s not every day that you get a free copy of a book. Use it to introduce yourself to a world that sees humans on the receiving end of some brutal violence. The books balance the action with a sense of determination and despair, love and hate from both humans and vampires. What more do you need?

Review of Humanity's Ultimate Battle (H.U.B.) Volume 3: The Tipping Point
Avid readers of my site will know that I have reviewed each of the H.U.B novels are they are written. As it’s now time for H.U.B Volume 3 I’m sure you of course knew I’d be reviewing it sooner or later and giving my view on the continuing struggles between the Vampire Nation and the human race.
The third book starts showing that the tensions between the vampires and humans are growing. Attacks on humans are growing but also attacks on vampire from the humans are building up too. To add to the problems there are also tensions between vampires too as there are issues between “pure” vampires and vampires that were once human. It’s all tension building up which of course all lead up to that one event that some are looking for, that “tipping point” that will send both races into a war to decide just who will take control.
What interests me in this novel is how intelligent the idea of the “tipping point” really is. From the hinting of such a thing to the eventual event we know is coming the story does not rush into pushing the reader into the event but actually takes it time and creates a scenario for it to happen. Where some stories would almost trivialise such event this story as a whole (over not just this novel but the series itself) is working towards something big, something big enough to create an event that at this point now feels like it will be World War 3. We have the vampires, some happy to live with the humans in peace, some who want to control them like “cattle” and then you have the humans. Just as with the vampires some humans just want to live in peace together, but others want to eradicate the threat of the vampire and they will do it by all means. The main tension between the two races is that of anger and fear.
The vampire does not feel fear just anger, but they can be galvanised into a full force by a forceful act by the humans, something to really create that anger within them. With humans they are driven by fear and they can be manipulated by it, and this fear can be created by the anger of others; both human and vampire. This is how they are manipulated in this novel as the positions of power change from neutrality to aggression in the issue of the vampire. All it takes is one event to push both fear and anger.
This book, even though it is slow at times really creates a good build up to the event that will (I am assuming will lead to the war). When the actual event does occur the slowness of the build up is forgiven as you read the words on the page and wonder how people could be so stupid to do what they do, how can they fall into the trap of total naivety of their actions which mirror events in the real world. I was impressed at the way the novel handled what is quite a complicated idea really and look forward to the next part of the story.

Interview with Getfanged.com
*Below is my interview that was conducted by the fine folks at Getfanged.com.
"My name is Benjamin Jones and I'm what's known as an independent (for the time being) author who is working tirelessly to make this dream of mine to be the world's greatest writer a reality. Right now I'm simply the greatest writer that 99.99998% of the world hasn't heard of, but I'm working to get that percentage a little lower."
Tell us a detail about the real Ben Jones, not the writer, but the man, which defines you.
I’m SUPER competitive and that competitiveness sinks its claws into EVERY aspect of my life, be it in writing or playing Playstation. I have a drive to the best at whatever I do and it’s so bad that I don’t even let my kids win at games – if they beat me then they know they will have earned that win but they should also know that I’m going to be coming at them harder the next game!
You have a fascination with vampires, but what exactly is it about the vampire, as a creature, which has you drawn to them?
The part of vampires that fascinates with me is the humanity within them. I don’t look at them as monsters, I look at them as humans that have become monstrous and, underneath it all, there’s still a bit of humanity left within them.
In your series “Humanity’s Ultimate Battle” (H.U.B.) you pit vampires against human beings, but they are vampires we are not familiar with. In 10 words or less, describe your vampires for us.
Misunderstood. A minority trying to live peacefully. Dangerous when provoked.
You’ve said elsewhere how the concept of the H.U.B. series arose from a response to the soft teen romance popularity of vampires. Is this the only personal issue you see your vampires addressing?
No, not at all. The vampires in H.U.B. address many different issues that we go through today. 99% of the vampires in H.U.B. just want to left alone and free to live their lives just like humans; they work, have kids, pay bills, love, etc…, etc… They’re a minority that is far outnumbered and, as such, humans try to press their will on them and the consequences aren’t always what the humans anticipate. I want this series to give readers something new to think about when it came to vampires. There’s more to the life of a vampire than killing or, in the case of Twilight, falling in love. There’s politics, xenophobia, fear, as well as killing and the many other emotions that come with life.
You describe yourself as an independent writer, but recently you have collaborated with other writers in diverse genres. Tell us how this works for you as a writer developing your craft?
What the collaboration with my group (we call ourselves The Clan of the Flying Pens – www.theclanoftheflyingpens.weebly.com ) does for me is makes me write stronger. When I read something good that one of the other members has written then I know that I have to step my game up and come with something that much better than what they have. At the same time what the group does is expose each other and our varied genres/writing styles to a wider range of audience. Certain readers may be drawn to our book by the crime thriller that one member of the Clan has written but then stumble upon an excerpt of H.U.B. that’s included and really like it (and vice versa).
Due to commitments in work, you write when you can, making your writing part-time. Do you think giving time between writing activity has shaped or affected your writing style?
It’s definitely affected my writing in the fact that it makes me know how valuable time is. When I write I tend to write “lean” meaning that my books aren’t these bloated 500 page behemoths with a lot of unnecessary fat to them. I try to get to the point as quickly as possible without sacrificing character development or anything crucial to the story.
Other than horror movies and books, what other sources of inspiration do you rely on to charge your creativity?
Great question. I’m inspired by all my writing peers, everyone from those like myself that are tying to make names for themselves all the way up to those like Stephen King (who is my idol). Like I’ve said in a previous interview, I love all the writers out there but I’m going to try to outsell you just because my competitive drive is so high.
Going back to your H.U.B. novels, you have the advantage of telling a detailed story in a series, where the plot development is free of the restrictions present in single volumes or trilogies. How does the pace of a series determine the way you explore extra dimensions of your characters?
Having the advantage of a series at my disposal I have the freedom to give certain characters the lead in one volume to where you get to know a lot about a certain character but in the next volume the focus shifts on other characters that may not have been in the previous volume or only mentioned in a phone call.
Another thing the pacing does is allow me to space things out the way I want to (no need to rush the impending war) and give the readers the full build up to what’s about to happen and not force feed it so quickly down their throats. I want the reader to get so caught up in everything else going on in the series that, when the war finally does happen, it’s like the icing on the already delicious cake.
The first novel is due for release later this year, published after your series H.U.B. How do you think your first novel has prepared you for your writing now in print?
The first novel, and all of the handwritten drafts that it went through, gave me the discipline that I need to continue on with the H.U.B. series. Through my work on Head Above Water (the title of my first novel) I was able to take all the lessons I learned writing it (including all the frustration of failed queries) and make my writing on H.U.B. that much better and gave me the confidence to put it out independently. In turn, the work on H.U.B. has provided me with even more lessons that I flipped and used when I ran through the latest re-write of Head Above Water.
You have confessed a liking for paper and pen when writing, and the cursive style when committing your personal thoughts to paper, especially in the letter form. Is it the romance associated with these tools of the trade or do they mean more to you?
There is the romance aspect but, most importantly, me writing my books in paper and pen allows me to feel “closer” to the story and the characters in it. It takes a lot – in writing a letter and ESPECIALLY in writing a book – to sit down and write draft after draft after draft using pen and paper. Writing is one of the things where I feel that the technology of computers isn’t always useful (some aspects anyway). It’s infinitely quicker to type up a book than it is to write it, same way that it’s a lot faster and easier to microwave something as opposed to using the oven, but that oven cooked meal is gonna taste so much better once you’ve waited for it to cook just right.
In H.U.B. volume 3, you are still approaching a promised war, and I am sure you won’t disappoint your fans. Without spoiling anything, what can we expect in the future for H.U.B?
Volume 3 is called The Tipping Point for a reason because, after this, you know that the war is definitely coming – SOON! Events happen and people die, shaping up the landscape for what was detailed in the prologue in the first volume. There are TREMENDOUS repercussions for actions that take place in volume 3 that will forever change every character involved in the series so far. It’s gonna be a lot of fun.
After Volume 3 you can expect the action to really get cranked up as the first 3 volumes have been the slow burning fuse to the dynamite that is about to blow up. I’ve been laying out the various scenes that are going to take place in Volume 4: Revenge, Retaliation & Getback (the title should tell the audience what the book will focus on) and I can see it easily being as long as the first two volumes (and maybe the third) put together.
Finally, we all want to know, what’s got you Fanged Ben?
What has Ben fanged is the love of the written word – writing has had it’s fangs embedded in my neck for as long as I can recall. What else has me fanged is the opportunity to entertain people and put out the best product that I can so that my readers/fans feel that they’ve gotten their monies worth.
What it all boils down to is that I’m a big kid still chasing my dream and anyone that helps me do that I am forever indebted to and I want to return the love that’s given to me right back. My gratitude is endless. Please visit www.whatishub.net to find out more about the series and how you can purchase and contact me. I love talking with fans.

Third Time's The Charm
Okay, we'll try this again! I've tried to write this blog entry twice and both times I've f**ked up and lost everything I wrote. So, this time I'm going to write w/out using fancy bullet points and just get on with.
Let's see what's been going on with me and my attempt at a career in writing:
* First of all, I've recently gotten on Google+ so, if you're on there and think I'm awesome (as you should), add me. You can find me by visiting https://plus.google.com/?tab=mX#11456... .
* As most of you probably know (and if you don't know now you know) Humanity's Ultimate Battle (H.U.B.) Volume 3: The Tipping Point is completed and ready to be released on 9.10.11. You can find all things HUB related by visiting www.whatishub.net Be sure to pick up Volumes 1 and 2 today so that you'll be caught up when the Tipping Point arrives. I'm really excited about this volume of the series as I feel my writing has definitely gotten better since volume 2. I'm starting to hit my vampire stride!
* Head Above Water, my romance novel that pre-dates the H.U.B. series by about a decade, is FINALLY ready to be released upon the world and I'm looking at a late 4th quarter 2011 release date. This is a sharp turn from my work on H.U.B. so I'm interested to see the reviews on it. I'm currently awaiting feedback from a select few who I have sent it to. This book is really my baby and it's time for it to spread its wings and take flight.
* The Clan of the Flying Pens project (http://www.theclanoftheflyingpens.wee... ) is almost here. 6 different writers, all of different writing styles/genres, coming together to showcase their work is going to be a BEAUTIFUL thing. I've read some of the Clan members work and it's really, really good. Not sure exactly what I'm going to be contributing (probably some poetry, segments of Head Above Water, portions of H.U.B. 3, etc...) but it's going to be FIRE, that I can assure you! SHOUT OUT to the Clan!
* While it's on my mind, big SHOUT OUT and THANK YOU to all my buds on Twitter, especially my writer/artists out there. I've met some real bad ass folks on there and for some of them to actually tell me that I inspire them is an AWESOME feeling. I enjoy people actually wanting ME to read THEIR work and give my feedback on it. Who would've thought?!?!
* I'm knee deep in work on The Girl In The Red Balloon, the novel I've decided to write while taking a break between volumes 3 and 4 of H.U.B. I'm not sure how the story is going to end yet but I'll figure that out in a few months. Be sure to check back for more info on this story later.
* Beginning to think of festivals/conventions that I can hit up next year to continue to get my writing brand out. Just this morning I got an email in regards to a festival next March that I'm interested in attending. Once things are confirmed I will be sure to post information on them. Speaking of confirmed, I will be having a book signing on 9.10.11 at the Camelot bookstore in Little Elm, TX from 12-6. Also, I will be having a book signing at the Little Elm Library on October 24th from 11-2. If you would like more info on either of these hit me up at ben(at)whatishub.net
* I have made a few booksales over the last few weeks (thanks to all of you for your purchase - each book sold helps to make my dream a reality) and the traffic to my sites has been awesome so thanks to everyone who has visited.
* Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/maddwriter
That's all I can remember right now but, if there's something I forgot, I will make another post. More later.....
