October Astrology Forecast

You’re Already Perfect!

“There are two kinds of perfect: The one you can never achieve, and the other, by just being yourself.” – Lauren King

Being our best. We all strive to put a positive foot forward in this world. In our daily lives, work or relationships, we’re eager to get things right. Often we fuss over the details, note the imperfections and then end up critique ourselves and our creations to our detriment, under the guise of making things perfect. Enter the slippery slope of perfectionism: the fear of making a mistake, of disappointing others or the fright of failure. In our efforts to be super-human we forget that we are, indeed, human – and because of this we are not flawless. Life is not about being unblemished, it is about making marvelous mistakes, one after the other, as this is how we learn, grow and gain wisdom – which is the whole point of this human experience!

By all means, work hard to advance your goals, cultivate your dreams, improve your skills and grow your knowledge! Show yourself and the world what you can do and accomplish – just don’t sabotage your endeavours by being so meticulous, nit-picky or fastidious that they fail to ever manifest. If you are constantly struggling to create something perfect, it will never get off the drawing board! Stop competing, comparing yourself or idealizing your view of excellence. Know that you are already perfect in your imperfection – and that’s how it should be!

This is the month to be aware of how not to detour our progress by falling into the trap of trying to be perfect and in turn too critical or judgmental – with ourselves or others. As Venus moves into Virgo, joining Mars and Jupiter already trudging though this detail-oriented and conscientious earth sign, we’re reminded to acknowledge the nuances in life while not letting the small stuff detract from the big picture. Combined with Mercury going Direct, we’re encouraged to launch our projects forward, not hold back creations by trying to first manifest a perfect formula. October also brings the shift of the Sun into Scorpio, helping to shine a light on our deeper and intuitive spirits, assisting us in transforming issues of our lives that need awakening while the Libra New Moon bring us the gift of balanced perspective in our actions and interactions. Finally, the Full Moon in Taurus helps us to recognize the beauty in all things – imperfections included!

To really understand how YOU will personally be effected by the current Astrological energies, you need to see how they fit into your individual Astrology chart. From this you’ll learn what impact they’ll have in your life, where you need to make changes and how to bring about the best outcome. It is up to us to embrace Octobers planetary energies to finally make things happen rather than just hoping they will. If you’d like to better understand how these planetary powers will effect you personally, contact me to schedule an over-the-phone, in-person, or skype Motivational Astrology reading today!

What do the Astrological energies have in store for all of us this month? Here’s the #AstroMotivation outlook for October:

8 October: Venus moves into Virgo – Tangible Love!

The way we demonstrate love, affection and enjoyment shifts from overt to more reserved, practical and pragmatic. This marks a time when we seek greater security, stability and conscious understanding of others and ourselves. Our interactions and relationships need to make more sense, be more serviceable and have a purposeful place in our lives. This is not the time for seeking perfection – that only leads to nitpicking and critical thought. Instead, keep your mind open and see all possibilities and potentials in life. Acknowledge the individual beauty within yourself and strive toward greater health, healing and holistic expression of your unique spirit.

9 October: Mercury in Libra Goes Direct – Finally Forward Motion!

As we exit Mercury’s retrograde cycle, we can now move ahead with our plans, procedures and proposals! We enter an ideal time for also finding more symmetry in our lives, cultivating better harmony and balancing our expectations! A big part of growing greater equilibrium is not expecting total happiness or total calamity at every turn. Ditch the drama and perfectionist tendencies! Moderation allows us to grow greater emotional, mental and physical peace in our actions and interactions. Combine this with an optimistic outlook that looks for the best but accepts things may not always work out as well as we’d like! This new cycle of “balanced thinking” helps us to better plan our goals and work toward a more creative, “zen-like” approach in our dealings. Focus now on the parts of your life that need harmonious attention and watch how this attracts harmony and happiness in all that you do!

12 October: New Moon in Libra – Renewed Equilibrium!

A new cycle of balance begins when it comes to relationships – not only with those in our life, but with ourselves also. We are now given a clearer understanding of how others see us versus how we see ourselves. Start believing in the power of YOU now by cultivating more self love – which in turn results in happier and healthier partnerships. This new lunar cycle can assist in bringing better balance to all aspects of our lives – especially relationships, love, beauty and self care. If you are needing to deal with a partnership problem, resolve a disagreement or get clearer on the connections in your life, this is the time. We can be more open to relating, finding agreement, seeking compromise and cultivating harmony now. This Lunar energy assists us in renewing love issues and helping with healing. Reflect now on how you see yourself as well as others, finding a better give and take with those in your life and focusing on working in harmony together. What can you begin today to generate more cooperation with others?

23 October: Sun goes into Scorpio – Shine your Inner Light!

A new transformational cycle unfolds, bringing greater depth, intimacy and emotional awareness to our lives! We’re now given the power to relinquish doubts, fears and superficial issues clouding our lives in order to get to the heart and soul of our beliefs and feelings. We’re encouraged to tap into our perceptive and investigative abilities, allowing us to uncover and embrace greater inner fortitude, resilience and power. Take this opportunity to look within and transcend issues that have caused restriction in your life. By initiating positive change now, we bring immense healing and powerful energy into our lives and into the lives of others. This is your reminder that you are the Light in the Dark – keep shining your inner sparkle!

27 October: Full Moon in Taurus – Beauty, Love and Enjoyment Illuminated!

The taste, touch, feel and fragrance of life is magnified now, helping us to appreciate more of the joy factor in all that we do! Honour those things that you value while releasing what is no longer pleasing. Cultivate greater artistry, affection and creation in your life by nurturing your gifted soul. Dismiss self-critical, self-doubting or self-sabotaging behavior by honoring the beauty that resides within you and all around you! Create a stronger foundation in personal and professional dealing by letting go of what is not longer valued or supportive!

The Outer Planets stay in a sign for a longer period of time, so their effect on us is more gradual, but significant none the less. Here they are in their current positions:

Jupiter in Virgo: Look back at what you experienced 12 years ago, when Jupiter was last in this sign, and notice similar themes arising for you. The difference being you now have more experience, wisdom and knowledge to help make the most of this new cycle of expansion. Success now comes by how much we pay attention to the details of our lives and our future goals. As the planet representing opportunity and growth moves through the sign highlighting practicalities, orderliness, analysis and organization, we can find greater prosperity and advancement by practicing these same things. Paying attention to the fine points, putting plans in place, being mindful of the details and having clear direction will enable us to bring our visions to reality. This goes hand-in-hand with better care and consideration of our body, mind and spirit balance.

Saturn in Sagittarius: We now have greater opportunity to move forward with our passions, plans and pursuits. This is an ideal cycle for embracing our true purpose and laying the foundations for manifesting our visions. Paying closer attention to what we want to experience, advance in, learn about and achieve for greater personal fulfillment is highlighted. Extra persistence, expansion and opportunity can come now, allowing us to get serious about our abilities, work toward realizing our dreams and take our talents to the next step!

Uranus in Aries: (Retrograde until 26 December 2015): We are encouraged to reflect on what we need for greater freedom in our lives. Honouring unique forms of self expression, liberation from oppression, new technology and inventive pioneering action is now highlighted. Strength, assertive action, inspirational vision, intuitive understanding and new innovation helps us to open up to new dimensions. Uranus will be in Aries until 7 March 2019.

Neptune in Pisces (Retrograde until 19 November 2015): Assists us in honouring greater spiritual awareness, creative inspiration and intuitive insight in our lives. We-are-all-one compassion is emphasized now along with humanitarian expression. Readdressing ways to embracing greater sympathy and empathy along with universal understanding is highlighted. Neptune will be in Pisces until 31 March 2025.

Pluto in Capricorn: This pairing will continue until 24 March 2023. The overall theme of this time is uncovering the misuse of power and authority to enable change for the better. It represents a major cycle of energy that brings transformation to our society, government, world order and Mother Earth. It also pushes to bring about much change to our personal lives and belief structures, especially as Pluto aspects the planets in our natal chart.

Chiron in Pisces: The ability to open our hearts to others while working to heal ourselves is highlighted. Greater spiritual awareness, empathy and compassion can be gained during this time but it’s important not to loose ourselves in the effort to assist others. Keeping personal boundaries in place is key for self care too. Chiron will be in Pisces until April 2018.

Your Personal Brand using Stationery

Stationery has been an important part of social etiquette since the Victorian era. In fact, business cards have evolved from the practice of presenting a personal calling card to a household servant when you dropped by someone’s house to call on them. Business cards and social stationery are both personal statements and should be a reflection of your personality and style.

Most of us have become so reliant on our email and text messages to communicate with everyone we know that we have lost the art of the hand written note. But I am on a mission to bring it back!

You should think about your stationery & business cards the same way you do your wardrobe. Sometimes you are dressing for the gym and other days you are getting cleaned up for a black tie event; your personal stationery also has levels of formality. For your business card, the recipient can use it as a way to jog their memory about you. A great business card can enhance the first impression you make. There are three important things to consider when working with a designer to create your stationery: type of paper, type of printing and overall design.

Paper

The most luxurious paper in the world is made from 100% cotton and has a beautiful texture to it. It is very traditional and comes in a variety of colors. For a more modern style, a smooth or coated paper stock can have a completely different affect.

Printing

Engraving is one of the oldest printing processes. You can achieve amazing detail and the result is a raised impression on the paper. During the printing process, ink is deposited into cavities in a copper plate and the paper is subsequently forced into the same cavity. The result is a raised impression, meaning the artwork is raised above the rest of the sheet of paper with the ink adhering to the raised surface. Engraving is the most formal type of printing for stationery and business cards.

Letterpress printing creates a deep impression into the paper stock. The heavier the paper stock, the deeper the impression you can achieve. Like engraving, a copper plate is used but the letterpress plate is raised and the ink is placed onto the pate and presses deep into the paper. Letterpress is the method by which the original Gutenberg Bible was printed in the mid-15th century and has come back into fashion for wedding invitations and the like.

Foil Stamping can be a fun way to add some pizzaz to your stationery! Foil comes in a variety of colors. Most foil you see often have a metallic shine to them, but they can also come in glossy or even glittery tones. This print method also uses a copper plate but it is heated prior to printing so that strips of foil can adhere to the paper stock.

Flat Printing is the least expensive method of printing. Ink is applied to a flat sheet of paper and neither an impression or a raised impression are achieved.

Design

They type of font you use and if you choose to include a motif or use a monogram can say a lot about your style. You can have your name written in custom hand calligraphy or use a sleek modern font. The options are truly endless!

Take some time to sit and write someone a note. It actually might prove to be harder than you think! Writing a note can be a nice break from all the constant communication we have on our cell phones. It forces a type of honesty that you can avoid through text messaging. Receiving a hand written note from someone nowadays is such a treat and makes you feel so special. Who wouldn’t like getting something in the mail that wasn’t a bill :)

Butternut Squash Ravioli

It’s still smoking hot in Los Angeles and the anticipation for fall is KILLING US!  I want to wear a scarf,  drink hot tea and eat comfort food!  So in the meantime while we wait for the best months we call Autumn, this dish is hearty and reminiscent of all things fall.  Butternut squash, fresh herbs, and warm fresh pasta.

IMG_2824

Butternut Squash Filling

1 small butternut squash
2 tbsp butter
1 cup ricotta cheese
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
2 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley
2 tsp finely chopped fresh time
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Bake the butternut squash for 30-45 minutes until tender.  Let cool.

Scoop the butternut squash out of one half (reserve the other).  Combine 1 cup mashed butternut squash with all other ingredients.  Mix well.

Start by making our Pasta Dough recipe following the directions.

Taking half of your pasta dough mixture, roll out the dough continuously flouring the surface.  This will take patience and time.  The dough needs to be  very thin to cook properly so take your time.  If you happen to have a pasta roller this may save you quite some time. Make two uniform sheets to start – you will use one as the base and use the other to place over the filling.

I highly recommend a ravioli cutter like this one here ($3.99 from Bed, Bath & Beyond).  This will save you loads of time and make all uniform little pillows of pasta.  Spoon about 2 tsp of the filling onto one of the pasta sheets leaving enough room to fit the cutter around the filling. Beat one egg and with a pastry brush, paint the egg wash  onto the pasta around the filling – this will make the two sheets of pasta stick together and seal.  Top with the other pasta sheet and ravioli cut away!  Do this as many times as you need to yield the right amount of pasta you need.

I highly recommend keeping the sauce just a simple butter sauce with some salt and pepper to not mask the butternut squash filling – simple and YUMMMMM!

5 Ways to Be (or Raise) a Body-Positive Teen

As a teen and young adult, I regularly found myself in a vicious cycle that involved a mentally overbearing state of either restriction or obsession.

I would adopt a diet based on what I believed would launch me into the best social circles faster because I realized that when I lost a few pounds off my already-thin frame, more compliments and admiration came my way.

That instant hit of dopamine felt so good and I wanted more. Unfortunately, at the time I didn’t open my eyes up wide enough to see that all of my pleasure was conditional on what other people thought about me, and more particularly, my body. This is a dangerous place to be.

I began to cultivate an obsession with my body and what food did to it. Today, this is referred to as orthorexia, a condition where one obsesses over what they consider to be “clean” or healthy foods. As far everybody else knew, I was just pursuing an admirable level of health; deep down, only I could see that my motives were dangerous.

I didn’t like my body and I wanted it to change.

While other people assumed I was eating healthy because I had “will power” and “self-discipline” I was actually eating because I was obsessed with getting smaller and smaller. I stopped learning about the value of the heart and the beauty of the mind, and instead put all of my eggs in one basket by forcing myself to change my appearance.

My obsession took me away from my friends and family, and it destroyed my self-esteem, self-worth and body image. I lived solely for eating perfectly so that I could look perfectly.

Today, this isn’t the case for me. I have learned how to focus on sharing my special gift with the world instead of wasting all of my time trying to change and morph something that really doesn’t even matter. My body was never going to bring other people more love and happiness, but my gifts sure do, and the same goes for you.

If you’re a parent with a teen or a teen or adult, here are 5 things I want you to keep in mind.

Be a body-positive light //  If you’re constantly shaming your own body, talking about food as good and bad, or restricting your calorie intake for the sake of your body image, your views on food and exercise will more than likely be soaked up by your teen. Since teenage years are already tough on body image and self-worth, the last thing that your kids need is extra reinforcement that their body image should be first priority. Talk about your own body kindly, and use language that highlights the values of the soul and not the appearance.
Open up the conversation about fat //  One thing I really wish I understood when I was younger is that fat isn’t bad. Fat is necessary, just like water, muscle, tissue and cells. As we work to reclaim the word fat and shed it of it’s negatively history, we can work together to shape a positive outlook on fat. Fat women and men deserve just as much respect as any other human being on this planet simple because they are human beings. Talk to your teen about why fat is not a bad thing and how health is not determined by size. If all we ever talk about is skinny, then how are we ever going to progress as a nation to appreciate every person, no matter his or her shape and size.
Throw out the scale //  If I could give you just one tip that would make the biggest difference in your life, it would be to throw out the scale. If you start your day every morning setting the tone and mood by seeing if it’s a “good” weight or a “bad” weight, then you’re allowing yourself to judge your worth based on trivial concerns. Your weight should never be a factor when it comes to your worth, and destroying your scale is the first part to releasing yourself of that mindset.
Honor your desire for pleasure //  Truthfully, I would have to say that one of the main reasons why people create a poor relationship with food (whether it’s binging or restricting) is because they have a poor relationship with pleasure. As a female, a desire for pleasure is frowned upon, which is why we so often turn to food for our pleasure. Food is a safe, easily concealed method of receiving instant pleasure, oftentimes without people knowing. If you’re a parent, open up the conversation about pleasure and what it means to live a life where you honor your heart’s desires in a way that feels good to you
Nourish yourself //  Food is not just calories; it is also nourishment and love and a reason to gather together with friends and family. Food has so many different purposes, the last of which should be to ensue fear in the eater. Nourish yourself with food in a loving way, and support the family by speaking about food as nourishment and not a means to lose weight or seek outward approval.

These 5 tips are a great starting point for raising a body-positive teen, or being one yourself. Your journey to what I like to call body freedom will show you that your body and your food choices do not define you…it’s what you do inside of your body that counts.

Easy Entertaining Crostini Recipes

There is nothing we love more than having friends over – but who likes sticking themselves in the kitchen wen they want to enjoy their company?  NOT US!

Crostini are a great way to feed guests while keeping things light, gourmet and fun. Combining unusual suspects to create a flavor bomb in your mouth will leave your guests talking!

Prosciutto, Goat Cheese & Augula Crostini

Monica Wang Photography-38

This one is inspired by the goat cheese and prosciutto flatbread at the Sunset Tower in LA. It goes perfectly with a glass of wine for an afternoon pick-me-up – this one though is one you can make at home!

(serves 4)

Ingredients

12 pieces of good French baguette
6 pieces of prosciutto
4 oz plain goat cheese
About 24 pieces of fresh baby arugula
Balsamic fig reduction for garnish

Directions:

Start by cutting the baguette on a diagonal. Brush the face of each piece with olive oil and bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes. This will crisp them up and make a great vehicle for your flavors.

Assignably is all in the eye of the beholder. I like to start with a generous smear of the goat cheese, followed by half a piece of Prosciutto, and two pieces of the baby arugula. When all of them have been assembled, finish with a generous drizzle of the balsamic fig reduction and serve. (Any whole foods or specialty foods store carry amazing balsamic redurtions).

Caprese Crostini

Monica Wang Photography-37

Who doesn’t love a caprese salad – it’s light, you feel a little bad with the cheese and a little good with the tomatoes. I turned this fan favorite into a bite sized goodness.

(Serves 4)

Ingredients

12 pieces of good french baguette
1 small tub of ricotta cheese
1/2 cup yellow cherry tomatoes
1/2 cup red cherry tomatoes
1/2 cup black cherry tomatoes (these are easy to find at markets but if you can’t add more of yellow and red)
1/4 cup good extra virgin olive oil
10-15 fresh basil leaves
salt & pepper

Directions:

Start by cutting the baguette on a diagonal. Brush the face of each piece with olive oil and bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

Start by cutting the tomatoes in halves or quarters depending on the size, you want them to hold shape but be small. Stack your basil leaves, roll them up then slice thinly. Add the tomatoes, basil, olive oil, salt and pepper to a bowl and combine. Let them sit for at least 30 minutes. The salt will break down the tomatoes and all the flavors will merry perfectly.

To assemble the crostini, smear a generous helping of the ricotta on a piece of crostini and pile high with the tomato mix. Garnish with a kiss of olive oil and salt and pepper.

Our Essential Reads

With only 16 days until the release of Bliss – we wanted to share some of our favorite reads as seen on MTV.com.  We do not have boundaries when it comes to genres: cookbooks, self-help, fashion, romance, young adult…reading for us is a form of meditation as we disconnect from technology and focus on what is in front of us, our current book, and not what is beeping around us.

Reading is not as popular as it used to be, and both being avid readers and self-confesswed book worms we want to hear about all of your favorite reads below:

“The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz

four agreements image

“This book is the rules of life, period. There’s no better way to enjoy the beach than to broaden your mind while you are at it.”

“A Tale of Two Besties: A Hello Giggles Novel” by Sophia Rossi

tale of two besties

“Much like us, this tale of true friendship is what we are all about (also from fellow bloggers and besties Sophia Rossi and Zooey Deschanel!).”

“Summer Sisters” by Judy Blume

“This is a classic, albeit for a more mature audience, but a must for every girl’s book collection.”

“#GirlBoss” by Sophia Amoruso

girl boss

“Every woman’s motivational bible. Sophia Amoruso is kick ass and a total inspiration.”

“Real Girl’s Kitchen” by Haylie Duff

rgk

“This cookbook is great for learning some real meals for the real girl! For foodies like us, cookbooks are like novels. But one, wise word of advice: make sure to read it on a full stomach.”

“Front Roe: How to Be the Leading Lady in Your Own Life” by Louise Roe

“This is the fashion bible with easy ways to look chic and dress well with little extras. It’s not about buying a new wardrobe; it’s about making what you have in your closet work for you. And don’t forget, confidence is key!”

And last but not least….
