It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 15 June 2020

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.
What I Read Last Week:
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
I devoured this book! It was so good and creepy and dark. I didn't want to put it down while at the same time I didn't want it to end. This is definitely getting added to my favorite reads of 2020. 5 0f 5 Stars!
Currently Reading: [image error] Since I really enjoyed Home Before Dark I decided to read Final Girls before what I chose last week for my next read (The House Guest... still listed below). I haven't had a ton of reading time and I honestly just wanted to savor Home Before Dark for a few days before diving into a new book so I'm hoping to get a little further into this one this week.
Next Read:
The House Guest by Mark Edwards
I do still plan to read this one this month and I'm hoping to get to it by the end of the week.

SURPRISE Anthology Release Day Blitz

Today I'm excited to help spread the word about the surprise release of a summer anthology by some of my favorite authors!
SUMMER IS HEATING UP! Cover designer: Sommer Stein, Perfect Pear Creative

Six FREE standalone summer themed short stories!
For a Good Time Call by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward Ever see For a good time call scribbled on the bathroom wall of a bar? Sure you have. Ever wonder what would happen if you had a few too many drinks and actually called the number? Well now you don’t have to wonder anymore, because I’ll tell you… It blows up in your face when you suddenly realize who Mr. Good Time is.

Eternal Sunshine by L.J. Shen Adam Mackay is my brother's best friend, turned Hollywood heartthrob, who is now my brand new, infuriating boss. Sounds complicated? You have no idea...

Stay Right Here with Me by Willow Winters I can’t tell you how many mistakes I’ve made sitting in this very spot in this small town bar. Watching the iron doors swing closed as the broad-shouldered man who just walked in sits across from me, I already know he’s on that list of, “I shouldn’t have done that...”

Damsel Dude in Distress by Helena Hunting I thought I was helping a damsel in distress. Turns out my damsel was actually a hot dude with some bad luck. It started with a broken down car and ended with a gross motel, an indoor campout and a set of Kama Sutra sheets.

The Beach R.S. Grey I’m not supposed to be on vacation with my best friend’s older brother. I’ve wanted him for so long, and now we’re unexpectedly alone in a tropical paradise. Naturally, I packed a lot of bikinis, but I should have brought armor if I want to have any hope of surviving my week away with Noah Martin…or should I say, Dr. Martin.

Lucky Shot by Sarina Bowen Rookie sports agent Bess Beringer gets a real education on the night of her first glitzy New York business dinner. But the things she learns have nothing to do with roster rules or contract negotiation. Luckily, rookie hockey player Mark "Tank" Tankiewicz is a pro-level teacher...

What I Read Last Week: The Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell
I love this author's first two books but her third, Stranger on the Beach wasn't one of my favorites. Still, she has the immense ability of throwing a killer twist in at the end of her books. Unfortunately, even though I had high hopes for this one, it reminded me a lot of Stranger On the Beach. I think it was the Hamptons setting, but I couldn't connect with Nina and though I liked Tabitha the plot just seemed a little expected and repetitive.
Rating:3 of 5 Stars!

Currently Reading: Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

I chose this book as my June BOTM pick. I was going to start reading over the weekend but I'm currently packing to move on July 1st so I'm hoping I have some down time to read today. It sounds really good and I've been meaning to read this author's other books.

Next Read:
The House Guest by Mark Edwards
I won an eBook copy of this book through Goodreads and it sounds so good so I'll probably read it next so I don't have to keep packing and unpacking my physical books.

I Can't Wait For... Reign!

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released.
I loved the first two books now I'm anxiously awaiting the conclusion...
Reign
Stormheart Book 3
by Cora Carmack
YA Fantasy
eBook, Hardcover, 352 Pages

August 25, 2020 by TorTeen

Blurb:
FIRST SHE ROARED. THEN SHE RAGED. NOW IT'S TIME FOR HER REIGN.

Aurora Pavan wanted to change her world.

She wanted to protect her people, not because they paid taxes, but because they deserved to live without fear. She wanted Pavan to be a home that welcomed everyone--remnants, stormhunters, and witches included.

For the first time in her life, she did not dread the duty into which she was born. She wanted it.

Then she met him. The Stormlord--the man who wielded the same magic as she, but with the intent to destroy rather than save. The Aurora Pavan who came home from that confrontation was not the same girl that had braved the wildlands and joined a rebellion. She was no longer the girl who was ready to change the world, ready to rule.

But she's the queen now all the same. And her kingdom needs her.

If only she can keep the new darkness inside her at bay.

The series that USA Today called "bright, electric, and imaginative" continues: Aurora Pavan rises to take her throne in this third installment of the Stormheart series by New York Times bestselling author Cora Carmack.

What I Read Last Week:Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl
I’ve heard good things about one of this author’s other books, Night Film but I haven’t had a chance to read it. I chose this one first because I fell in love with the edition’s cover on Barnes and Noble and the premise sounded interesting. I wasn’t sure at first that I would like it when I first started reading (which seems to be a common thought lately). It’s a very unique read to say the least. It could have a genre of its own …. thriller/time warp/sci-fi or something. But the more I got into it the more I ended up really loving it. And by the end… well I was crying. Which I hate, but it usually means I really enjoyed the book. Rating:4.5 of 5 Stars! The Sea of Lost Girls by Carol Goodman
I picked this one up on a whim after Amazon recommended it to me while shopping for other books. I’ve never heard of the author before or read any of her previous works. Just like Neverworld before it I wasn’t sure I’d like this book at first. Tess is the quintessential helicopter mom and let’s face it, Rudy is weird. We’re drawn into the mystery when Tess picks her son up at 3am on a Point surrounded by water that’s off limits to students at the fancy prep school Rudy attends and Tess and her husband teach at. He’s sopping wet and he’s just had a fight with his girlfriend…. A girlfriend who is found dead early the next morning. Tess is drawn into a web of secrets and lies as she attempts to protect her son from falling under suspicion. But as the reader follows Tess down twists and turns and learns of her own sordid past you’re kept guessing until the breathtaking end. I wouldn’t say this book is perfect, but I couldn’t put it down. I finished it in a single day. Rating:4 of 5 StarsCurrently Reading: The Night Swim by Megan Goldin
Okay, say it with me… I wasn’t sure at first if I’d like this book when I started reading. I’m actually still not sure I want to finish it. Rachel (the main character) is not the problem. Neither is half the plot… the true crime podcast, the trial, even the subplot of Jenny Stills’s death so long ago. It’s Hannah and her psycho-stalker ways of trying to get Rachel to help find out who killed her sister. Any sane journalist would have had Hannah arrested for stalking by now. I guess we’ll see where it goes and if Rachel and Hannah ever meet face to face. The Night Swim releases August 4, 2020 - Next Read:The Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell
I’ve been waiting to read this one until closer to the release date (July I believe) but I can’t wait any longer. Ms. Campbell is one of my favorite thriller authors and I’m ready for her next twisty read. ***What have you been reading lately?

{BLOG TOUR AND EXCERPT} The Beginning of the End by R. Holmes

Today we have the blog tour for THE BEGINNING OF THE END by R. Holmes! Check it out and be sure to grab your copy today! Title: The Beginning of the End Author: R. HolmesGenre: Contemporary Romance  About The Beginning of the End: Ambrey My last name was royalty in New Orleans, at least, I guess to those who mattered. But to me…my last name was a curse. High society. Expectations. Old money. Politics. Everything I despised. If only they could see what happened behind those high-society closed doors. The same doors my daddy paid a lot of money to keep closed. Deceit. Destruction. Bribery. You name it, my family was guilty of it. My father’s throne was built on lies. Our family was the epitome of faux royalty. Then, I fell in love and oh what a fool I was. I was just a pawn in my father’s game. And to use the man who claimed to love me... Five years ago, I walked away, and left my father to his riches. And that man who left me in broken, jagged pieces? Well, what goes around, comes around.  Grey Four years in a prison cell changes a man. I spent those five years fighting to survive. When I emerged, I was nothing like the man who had walked through those cell doors all those years ago. I overcame things that I never imagined I’d be faced with.. The one person who promised to never leave, did. The life I thought I knew, gone. The future I once thought I had, up in smoke. Like so many things in my life, my story and my future were stolen from me. Sure, it’s made up of the usual parts…a beginning and an end. But just like every story, there’s a hero, there’s the villain…and then there’s me. And this is the beginning of the end.

Excerpt:
“Then life changed again when I walked into your office and came face-to-face with you. All at once, all of those memories came flooding back. Not just the ones of the time we spent together, but prison and everything in between. I was shocked, and angry, and hurt all over again. Somewhere between now and then, I lost myself and I am just now figuring out the man I need to be. I became hard, cold, and jaded. Scared to ever let anyone get close to my heart again after it was destroyed. My daughter is the one who thaws this cold piece of flesh that’s barely beating inside me. She shows me every day that no matter what I feel inside, I am worthy of redemption. I am worthy of her love.”

What I Read Last Week: Dawn Till Dusk by Tyffany Hackett and Becky Moynihan
I went into this book both excited and nervous. Excited because I've been eager to read this one since I first heard about it. But also nervous because I've been in a reading funk where I can get so far into a book (usually 100 pages or so) and then my mood plunges and I don't feel like reading anything no matter how much I'm enjoying it. But this book kept me engaged and I loved both of the main characters.

Currently Reading
Bone Crier's Moon by Kathryn Purdie
I started this ARC at the beginning of the year but when I got to Bastien's first chapter I really disliked him as a character and set the book aside. But when Fairyloot started their read along on IG last week I decided to try again with my copy I got in their March box. I actually really got into it this time but I got behind on the read along so I'm hoping to have enough energy to finish it this week. I still hate Bastien by the way. And Jules.
