What I'm Binge-Watching - 18 February 2021

What I'm Binge-Watching is a weekly meme to document all of our favorite binging obsessions. Follow along and let me know what you've been binge-watching lately!

Continuing

Current Episode: Season 5 Episode 5 - Swap Meet

We haven't made too much progress since last week but at least we're in season 5 now!

Current Episode: New York - Whatever Discovery+ Plays, Atlanta - Season 1 Episode 11

We've been watching SYTTD: Atlanta more often and I think we're nearing the end of season 1.

New Obsessions & Recent Binges

I literally started watching this docuseries the same night I posted last week's "What I'm Binge-Watching" and watched the whole thing in one night. In comparison with both the Ghost Adventures and ID Channel episodes and miniseries I thought Crime Scene was the best of the three shows (and not just because Ron Howard produced it). It seems to give viewers the whole, most factual picture where we finally hear that Elisa Lam had a history of stopping her medication, that she had psychotic episodes before including thinking people were after her and seeing/hearing things that weren't there, and that she had been institutionalized before. All of the behavior described and on the elevator footage is classic signs of someone with bipolar going off their medication. As for the web sleuths and their crazy theories.. everything from the paranormal to ruining a death metal musician's career just because he stayed at that same dumpy hotel a year prior? It went too far. Way too far. It's a perfect example of judging someone just because they're different from you. But I will say that I didn't like the former general manager of the Cecil that was interviewed. It was like the whole thing - the disappearance, discovery, and interview were a big joke to her. At times during the interview she was almost joking about what had happened in the past at the hotel or trivializing the clientele of the hotel & how often the police were called in a “so what” manner while in others it was like it was all about her. She should have taken it more seriously, someone did die, no matter the circumstances. Hell, lots of people died there and she was making it sound like an awesome place to work.

My mom and I binged this over the weekend and I loved the first season, but the second and third seasons sucked in my opinion.

I watched this all the way through on Monday. Well, sort of. I was watching it but I was also reading and doing stuff on my phone so it was more background noise than watching. As a horror show it was okay but the special effects and ghosts were so fake at times it was laughable... in the last episode you could almost see the "ghost" on a wheeled track charging toward one of the cult people. The acting was okay, the episodes short, and this is easily watchable in a few hours.

Just Added to My Watchlist

This isn't really new to my watchlist but I just started watching it on Tuesday. I'm not really sure yet if I like it or not, I think I'll have to take it like books I'm considering DNF'ing (did not finish-ing). The acting isn't bad, but there was a scene with the main character and a bunch of wolves and the wolves were so oversized and obviously fake that it put me off. I wanted to watch this because it has Gustaf Skarsgård (who played Floki on Vikings) in it as Merlin but I'm not sure even he can help me stay interested.

What are you currently binge-watching? What are some of your latest obsessions that you couldn't get enough of? Let me know in the comments!Happy binging!

I Can't Wait For... VELVET WAS THE NIGHT!

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released.
I really enjoyed Silvia Moreno-Garcia's last book, Mexican Gothic and this one sounds really good too...

Velvet Was the Night
Standalone
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Historical Thriller
eBook, Hardcover, Audiobook, 304 pages

August 17, 2021 by Del Rey

Blurb:
From the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic comes a riveting noir about a daydreaming secretary, a lonesome enforcer, and the mystery of the missing woman that brings them together.

1970s Mexico City. Maite is a secretary who lives for one thing: the latest issue of Secret Romance. While student protests and political unrest consume the city, Maite escapes into stories of passion and danger.

Her next-door neighbor, Leonora, a beautiful art student, seems to live a life of intrigue and romance that Maite envies. When Leonora disappears under suspicious circumstances, Maite finds herself searching for the missing woman–and journeying deeper into Leonora’s secret life of student radicals and dissidents.

Meanwhile, someone else is also looking for Leonora at the behest of his boss, a shadowy figure who commands goon squads dedicated to squashing political activists. Elvis is an eccentric criminal who longs to escape his own life: He loathes violence and loves old movies and rock ‘n’ roll. But as Elvis searches for the missing woman, he comes to observe Maite from a distance–and grows more and more obsessed with this woman who shares his love of music, and the unspoken loneliness of his heart.

Now as Maite and Elvis come closer to discovering the secrets behind Leonora’s disappearance, they can no longer escape the danger that threatens to consume their lives, with hitmen, government agents, and Russian spies aiming to protect Leonora’s secrets–at gunpoint.

{Release Day Blitz + Review} THE BACHELOR by Carly Phillips

Release Date: February 16

The Chandler Brothers from New York Times Bestselling Author Carly Phillips are back!
In honor of THE BACHELOR’s 20th Anniversary all three books have been updated and will be reissued with gorgeous NEW covers with the same content but modernized for your reading pleasure. The BACHELOR was the first book that Kelly Ripa chose for her Reading with Ripa Bookclub.
The Bachelor

He’s got wanderlust and no intention of settling down.

She’s home to stay and has put her bad boy ex in her rearview mirror.
After spending his life abroad, embracing his freedom at every turn as a foreign correspondent, Roman Chandler finds himself the brother nominated to deal with his ailing mother’s matchmaking shenanigans. Thanks to a coin toss, he needs to find someone to marry and fast.

It shouldn’t be that hard in sleepy Yorkshire Falls where women fall over themselves to hook a Chandler man.

But Roman only wants the one woman who got away.

Charlotte Bronson is back home to put down roots and get her lingerie business off the ground. She’s not interested in her past or a man that chose to chase breaking news stories to the far corners of the earth over her.

No matter how good they used to be or how combustible their chemistry still burns.

It’s up to Roman to convince Charlotte he’s a changed man and here to stay.    Grab Your Copy Here! *** My Review: I first read The Bachelor many, many years ago. Probably close to 13 years now that I come to think of it. It was the second book I read by Carly Phillips after The Playboy - which is actually the second book in this trilogy but as always, I read the series out of order. As a standalone in a series this can be done. All of the Chandler brothers books are connected, but each is about one couple - Roman and Charlotte, Rick and Kendall, and Chase and Sloane.
Roman is a foreign correspondent who has no desire to settle down in his small upstate New York hometown looking at the same woman's face over the breakfast table for the rest of his life. Until his mother falls "ill."
Rayna Chandler, widowed at 37 who raised her three sons on her own wants one thing - grandchildren. Of course she wants her three wayward sons to settle down and find happiness with the women of their dreams too of course. But she's not getting any younger and a recent health scare brings into perspective what she really wants most. So she tells her sons that she has a serious heart problem and that her greatest wish before something worse happens to her is to be surrounded by grandchildren. Heavy dose of guilt there right? Even I'm feeling it and I'm undecided on the whole kids thing. 🤣
So, since oldest son Chase helped their mother raise Rick and Roman, the two younger brothers flip a coin to see which will be unlucky enough to have to find a woman, get married, and get said wife pregnant as soon as possible. And the unlucky bastard is... Roman. But hey, nobody said it had to be a marriage filled with love? All he needs is a woman who wants children above all else who doesn't mind if her husband is gallivanting all across the world chasing the latest story. What could go wrong? (also - side note... does anyone else see a potential problem here? What if the wife he chooses has fertility issues and it's not just bing-bang-boom here comes baby?)
Insert Charlotte Bronson, the girl who got away. The one girl in high school that didn't fall at Roman's feet, the one he never got over. Back in their hometown and running a sexy lingerie store on the Main Street Charlotte knows she eventually wants to get married and have kids. But she doesn't want to repeat her mother's mistake of falling for a man that's always on the go for his job and never at home. That's why after their one and only date in high school Charlotte told Roman he didn't "do it" for her after hearing his plans to get out of town as soon as possible once school was over.
It must be fate that they're back in town at the same time. And Roman isn't going to let Charlotte go a second time, but can he convince her to give him a second chance?
The Bachelor is a cute, small-town romance about second chances. Parts of it make you laugh, other parts will melt your panties. This edition releasing today is the 20th anniversary edition, so the main content hasn't changed other than all three books in the series getting new covers and a few modernizations made throughout the book - pagers and blackberries become smartphones, Charlotte promotes her business through social media which didn't really exist/wasn't prominent when this book was originally published. Reading it again was like catching up with an old friend and remembering all the feels it gave me the first time, all those years ago.
It will appeal to new readers who like a dash of humor, a ton of heat, and that small town feel that's trademark to so many Hallmark movies. If you're looking for a new contemporary romance to steal your heart, look no further than The Bachelor.
Rating: 4 of 5 Stars!

The Playboy

He’s the town’s most popular playboy.

She’s sworn off men and weddings for good.
Police officer, Rick Chandler, has managed to fend off the marriage-minded women in his small town but it’s getting more difficult with each passing day. After all, there’s something about the Chandler charm that keeps them coming back with hope in their hearts.

What’s a man determined to stay single to do?
Kendall Sutton is a cliche, a runaway bride stuck on the side of the road, until she’s rescued by the sexiest cop she’s ever seen.

In spite of her pearly gown and tiara, Kendall vows to never get married -- which makes her the ideal fake girlfriend to ward off Rick's legion of admirers.
But when their charade starts to feel real, suddenly the town’s most popular playboy has marriage on his mind - but will a woman with Kendall’s jaded past ever say “I do”?
Grab Your Copy Here!

The Heartbreaker

He's a loner who indulges in a one night stand out of town.

She’s a senator’s daughter who never expects to see her indulgence again.
Small town journalist Chase Chandler has waited a long time for the chance at a national story, putting his dreams on hold to help with his younger trouble-making siblings and taking over the family newspaper.

His trip to Washington D.C. is business only until he gets a look at the seductive red-head.
Sloane Carlisle isn’t just any woman.

She’s a senator’s daughter whose world has been rocked by news that devastates her and she finds solace in Chase’s arms.

She was never supposed to see him again except when she heads to the small town of Yorkshire Falls to uncover the truth about her family, she runs headlong into the man she can’t forget and suddenly he’s by her side.
All. The. Time.
Because unbeknownst to Sloane, in exchange for an exclusive, all Chase needs to do is keep her safe.

He’s watched his siblings fall in love and marry and suddenly the man who thought he was finished raising a family wants one with the woman who made him believe in love at first sight.

What will it take to get Sloane to say the two words that could turn the town's most eligible bachelor into the world's sexiest spouse?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 15 February 2021

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.
Happy Monday Bookdragons! I hope you had a good weekend and a nice Valentine's Day if you celebrated!
What I Read Last Week: Winds of Salem by Melissa de la Cruz Winds of Salem was the weakest of the trilogy in my opinion. It's split between Freya being stuck in Salem in 1692 and the modern era and sometimes that works, other times it doesn't. I don't like how Freya's story ultimately ends. We see more in Freddie's perspective in this book and I couldn't stand him even in the second book. Joanna's part was okay, but I found it annoying how invested she was in Tyler getting into a private kindergarten; one might even call it obsessed. And I think Norman was done wrong. He had to sacrifice himself just because of a stupid decision Freddie makes. And Ingrid... she was the most stable of the book I guess? It was an okay read but toward the end I found myself mostly skim reading.
East by Edith Pattou While the story is clearly well-researched to keep to historical accuracy and terms maybe it’s because of how many times I read the original fairy tale growing up that I found the story predictable. I always knew basically what was going to happen next.Currently Reading:The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager I started reading this book once before but was in a book rut so I'm giving it another go.
Next ReadSweet Black Waves by Kristina Perez This is a "give-a-book-a-second-chance" read for me. The last time I tried to read this book I kept comparing it to the 2006 movie Tristan and Isolde staring James Franco and Sophia Myles. Now I'm going to go into it thinking only that it is a YA Fantasy inspired by an old myth and in no way related to the movie. Let's see how that goes.
***
Do you ever give a book you DNF'd or didn't like a second chance?

BLURB
Finding a good roommate through a classified ad isn’t as easy as it sounds.I was starting to lose hope.Until a knock at my door came and God answered my prayers.Except…uh…wrong prayer, God.I’d definitely requested the big guy find me a drop-dead gorgeous man on more than one occasion...just not as my roommate.Declan Tate talked me into interviewing him anyway. While he was amusing and charismatic, I wouldn’t have been comfortable living with a man, so I regretfully declined. Then cupcakes showed up at my door—freshly baked by Declan and just as sinfully delicious as he was.You could say he was persistent.I eventually folded. It wasn’t like I had another viable candidate anyway.Plus, I was interested in someone else. And Declan was into another woman. So it wasn’t like anything would happen romantically. After he moved in, the two of us became the best of friends. We even started to give each other advice on getting our crushes to notice us.Eventually, Declan concocted an idea: we should pretend to be a couple to make our love interests jealous.I was hesitant, but went along with it anyway. To my utter shock, his crazy plan worked. Now I was dating the supposed man of my dreams, and my best friend had the woman of his.But there was one problem.I couldn’t stop thinking about Declan. Those feelings we were trying to fake?Yeah…I wasn’t pretending anymore.

What I'm Binge-Watching: 11 February 2021

What I'm Binge-Watching is a new meme to document all of our favorite binging obsessions. Follow along and let me know what you've been binge-watching lately!

Continuing

Current Episode: Season 4 Episode 19 - Exposure

The end is near, I can feel it. I've been watching this show on Hulu for about a month and I'm ready for it to end. I loved it in the beginning but in my opinion - SPOILER ALERT - the worst plot choice was bringing David back from the dead. Plus there are so many characters I just can't stand - Victoria, David, Margeaux... and now Courtney Love is an assassin?!?! What a cluster...

Current Episode: Season 4 Episode 20 - Dead Ringer

I started rewatching CSI again when I moved back into my mom's house. We watch a few episodes at a time then take a break to watch some of our other continuing binges.

Current Episode: New York - Whatever Discovery+ Plays, Atlanta - Season 1 Episode 2

My mom and I love watching Say Yes to the Dress. With the new Discovery+ App it plays whatever of the New York episodes it wants, sometimes on a loop since it runs all day. But with my sister's boyfriend living with us we usually only watch it when he's not around.

Current Episode: Season 2 Episode 7 - Tender Loving Care

I watched these on tv as they aired but we are rewatching them now on the Discovery+ App.

Current Episode: Season 1 Episode 6 - Who Killed Katie Autry?
We love watching true crime shows and we're just about caught up on all the current episodes of Southern Gothic. We're also watching Murder in the Heartland and A Crime to Remember.

New Obsessions

I don't know why streaming services are getting flooded with all of these documentaries about the Cecil Hotel all of a sudden but I'm obsessed! I started with the Ghost Adventures episode, moved on to ID's Horror at the Cecil and I see that Netflix just added a new documentary!

Just Added to My Watchlist

Yep, you guessed it. The newest addition to my Netflix queue is the new docu-series Crime Scene: The Vanishing At the Cecil Hotel

I've heard of this show before but I just saw a clip for it when I went to add Crime Scene to my Netflix Queue and it looks good so I added it at the same time.

I'm a sucker for teen dramas, especially ones with fantasy elements. I'm not sure how soon I'll get around to this one but it just got added to my queue.

What are you currently binge-watching? What are some of your latest obsessions that you couldn't get enough of? Let me know in the comments!
Happy binging!

Blurb:
A young woman agrees to star in a filmmaker’s latest project, but soon realizes the movie is not what she expected in this chilling debut novel.

In the wake of her father’s death, Betty Roux doesn’t allow herself to mourn. Instead, she pushes away her mother, breaks up with her boyfriend, and leaves everything behind to move to New York City. She doesn’t know what she wants, except to run.

When she’s offered the chance to play the leading role in mysterious indie filmmaker Anthony Marino’s new project, she jumps at the opportunity. For a month Betty will live in a cabin on a private island off the coast of Maine, with a five-person cast and crew. Her mother warns against it, but Betty is too drawn to the charismatic Anthony to say no.

Anthony gives her a new identity–Lola–and Betty tells herself that this is exactly what she’s been looking for. The chance to reinvent herself. That is, until they begin filming and she meets Sammy, the island’s caretaker, and Betty realizes just how little she knows about the movie and its director.

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 of My Favorite Contemporary Romance Novels

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and The Bookish and currently hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.
Top Ten Tuesday: 10 of My Favorite Contemporary Romance NovelsThis week’s TTT is a Valentine's Day / Love Freebie. I've already done my Top 10 Favorite YA Couples before so I thought I'd go with favorite contemporary romance novels this time. I'll confess... I don't read a lot of contemporary romance. I need it to be high on the sexy factor and low on the cheesy dialogue factor. In fact... as long as we're being honest here... I don't do Valentine's Day. I prefer to spend the day watching horror movies. 🤷 But there are a few sexy reads I absolutely love... so here goes..
1. Play by Kylie ScottI'm a huge fan of Kylie Scott but Mal is forever my favorite book boyfriend. He's hot, funny, and just overall the best.

2. Gentleman Nine by Penelope WardGentleman Nine was the first audiobook I listened to and enjoyed. It was also my first Penelope Ward book and made her an auto-buy author for me.
3. Bad Boy Brody by TijanThe Tijan books I've read can rip your heart out and then put it back together. As you may tell from my choices here, I love romance novels that involve actors or rock stars but Bad Boy Brody is a seriously amazing book.

4. Rock King by Tara LeighI took this one on as a review book and loved it. There are other books in the series but this one is the best.

5. Off Limits by Penny Dee I'm not a huge fan of big age-gaps in romance but this book made me fall in love with MC books!

6. Making Up by Helena Hunting This was my first Helena Hunting book, I haven't read the other standalone in the series but like all of HH's other books this one made me laugh.

7. Nash by Jay Crownover I like most of the other Marked Men books (not crazy about Rowdy I'll admit) but Nash was the first one I read (yes... I read out of order A LOT) and will always be my favorite. It's one of the few books I finished then turned the book over and started reading again from the beginning.

8. Devoured by Emily SnowThis book I think is a big underrated. It's more erotic romance than anything and I know a lot of people didn't like it but it's still one of my favorites.

9. Bad For You by Abbi GlinesI'm sitting here trying to pick my favorite Abbi Glines book... I love so many of them. So let's just put number nine as a blanket Abbi Glines appreciation pick.

10. Queen of Babble Gets Hitched by Meg CabotI love this trilogy overall, but I read this one first not realizing it was part of a series and found it so hilarious. I've reread it a bunch of times.
