Melton's Mettle: an excerpt

An excerpt from the exciting new novel “Melton’s Mettle:

“You are a police officer, shot in the line of duty. Bullet lodged near the spine between lumbar vertebra T-11 and T-12. Currently, there’s swelling, pressure on the spinal cord, may affect the functional use of the lower extremities.”

There was silence in the room for a moment. Down the hall, a phone rang.

Melton's Mettle

New novel release - Melton’s Mettle

In an era where police conduct has come under close scrutiny, it is easy to over-look the many challenges faced by the officers on the front line who must make split second decisions in the course of protecting citizens from the predatory conduct of criminals. Melton’s Mettle introduces police detective Daniel Melton who pays dearly incurring a disabling injury yet demonstrates the mettle to search for his shooter and try to stop the plague of arsons terrorizing the city.

The city recognizes Melton with an Award of Valor yet refuses to reinstate the disabled detective and defeats his job loss lawsuit. Melton hangs a shingle as a private investigator, pursuing the investigation into finding his shooter. Fires and dead bodies mount. Melton finds a key clue drawing him to a vacant hotel building and into a mega-explosion.

Will disabled detective Melton survive the explosion and confront the shooter? Why has the city’s investigation failed to make headway? Who is really behind the string of arsons and deaths? Does Melton have the mettle to succeed where others have failed to stop the plague of violence terrorizing the city?

Drawing a Line Blog survey results

The Drawing a Line blog thanks all individuals for their comments in reply to the Blog #50 survey “Have you observed sexual harassment?” Posted 3-31-21, this blog has continued to generate interest and comments even after the poll was closed on 5-30-21.
Of the comments received on Facebook, 30% of commenters (M&F) offered comments about observed sexual harassment; 22% (F&M) identified that they had experienced sexual harassment. The harassment victims revealed a high degree of emotion about their experiences. 13% of commenters (M) joked about the subject of sexual harassment (ie: when was sexual harassment day?) An additional 22% of commenters (M) made remarks that could be characterized as “anti-victim,” (ie: “…another lousy victim blog…”).
Readers are encouraged to treat others as you would like to be treated. Further, you are invited to consider the effects of such unwanted pervasive sexual or other joking/comments, propositions, demands, pornographic visual displays, or physical contact upon your child, sibling, spouse, or significant other, as well as co-workers.
Workplaces in which employees are treated with respect are more productive and profitable. According to the EEOC Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace, there is a compelling business case for stopping and preventing harassment. Workplace harassment affects all workers, and its true cost includes decreased productivity, increased turnover, and reputational harm. All of this is a drag on performance – and the bottom-line.
Managers of working environments that condone or allow harassing conduct, slurs, vulgarity, joking relating to sex, race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, or genetics expose the employer to incidents of discrimination that can result in complaints and costly liabilities.
Follow the Drawing a Line blog for insights and information for individuals concerned about sexual and other forms of harassment occurring on the job.
