Politico: Al Franken builds on President Obama's car metaphor

MINNEAPOLIS — Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) put his acting skills to work Saturday as he took President Barack Obama's favorite campaign analogy to a new level.

Franken, speaking at a Democratic rally at the University of Minnesota, said Obama's much-used car-into-a-ditch campaign metaphor is "just a little too static."

MinnPost: Franken reminds Dems of 2008: 'Every vote matters'

WASHINGTON — With Election Day now just a week and a day away, Democrats continue to seek the message that will get discouraged left-leaning voters to turn out this year as they did in 2008 (or at the very least, as they did in 2006).

Enter Al Franken, who has become a leading voice driving the Democratic turnout message by reminding supporters that even a few votes — in his case, 312 of them — can make a big difference.

Take it from me — every vote matters

Here's Al's Daily Kos post:

I think most of you know me. I'm the poster boy for close elections.

As you may remember, I won my 2008 Senate campaign after a long recount by just 312 votes out of 2.9 million cast. That's a margin of about 1/100th of one percent. So I can tell you from personal experience that every vote counts.

And every vote in Congress counts, too. I'm proud of the vote I cast for health care reform that expands access to medical care while reducing the deficit. That's right: health care reform will reduce the national debt by over a hundred billion dollars over the next ten years, and by 1.5 trillion dollars over the following ten.

Star Tribune: And the car goes…

We've all heard this one before. President Barack Obama likening the economy when he took office to a car in a ditch, that the Democrats had to push out.

The story has grown and changed over time but it is the same tale, again and again and again.

Star Tribune: Local debt collector to pay $1.75 million

Allied Interstate Inc., a large Minnesota debt collection agency with a history of consumer complaints and state fines, has agreed to pay $1.75 million to settle federal allegations that it broke the law by trying to collect debts people didn't owe.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it is the second-largest civil penalty it has obtained against a debt collection firm. It comes amid rising complaints of abusive collection tactics and calls by state and federal legislators for more regulation.

Federal officials said the enforcement action is meant to send a message to the collections industry that repeatedly calling consumers who dispute a debt is not tolerated.

"We think it's pervasive," Tom Pahl, an assistant director in the FTC's division of financial practices, said of the harassing telephone calls. "If you've got the wrong person, you should check it out, and you should stop."

The FTC also alleged that Allied debt collectors on numerous occasions spoke to neighbors, co-workers or others about a consumer's debts. The federal agency said Allied deceived consumers by threatening legal action it didn't intend to take. Both practices are illegal.

MinnPost: Klobuchar, Franken back Sun Country for slot at D.C.'s Reagan National

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation is considering Sun Country Airlines for a rare takeoff and landing slot at Washington's Reagan National Airport, according to Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, who are backing Sun Country's bid.

Mendota Heights-based Sun Country plans to operate a flight from D.C. that would service Minneapolis by way of Lansing Michigan's Capital Region International Airport. Sun Country is competing for one of two open slots at Reagan, the most centrally-located but space-constrained of the D.C. area's three airports.

"Sun Country is uniquely qualified among the applicants for this slot, in that it is the only route that meets all five criteria that the Department of Transportation must consider under the applicable statute," the senators wrote, along with Michigan senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow. "In a time of job loss and rising air fares, this application presents an opportunity to provide an economic boost to three metro areas and assist American consumers and workers simultaneously. We appreciate your careful consideration of this request."
