Nacido el 31 de diciembre de 1965, Sergio Álvarez intentó estudiar filosofía pero se aburrió y decidió irse a vivir a los Llanos Orientales. Cinco años después regresó a Bgotá, trabajó en publicidad, como guionista de comics y libretista de televisión. A mediados de los años noventa se radicó en Barcelona, donde escribió la novela juvenil Mapaná y La Lectora, un juego literario con formato de novela negra que fue premiado en la Semana Negra de Gijón y convertido en serie de televisión. Colabora con El País y La Vanguardia, los dos principales periódicos de España. En la actualidad ultima su tercera novela y trabaja en una serie de televisión y en un par de películas que se preparan con argumentos originales suyos.
